Buying clothes while in the process of losing weight?

  • I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to add my thoughts. I am itching to get out of my old clothing. Like obsessively. My nicer work clothing that is slightly ill fitting but still wearable is being ignored for disposable casual wear that I just bought at Old Navy. After loosing 20+ pounds, I can still basically get away with wearing many of old things, but they represent the old me I guess and I feel ugly now wearing them. Plus I don't work now and stay with my kids. I have not decided if I should keep and store or get rid of my stuff.

I can't afford new things but did take advantage of a one day sale at GoodWill. Be sure to check with your local store as they have 50% off once or twice a month. Great way to pick up things in lower sizes too

I keep reading people talk about how they buy for their goal weight or size or multiple sizes down, but I don't have a goal. My immediate goal is to get to a size 14, after that, I don't know. I did pick up a few items that were one size down, but that was about it.

Maybe visualizing a ultra thin me will help in the process???

I don't know if it's a good idea to buy clothes in smaller sizes that you just plan to fit into eventually. You never know how your body will end up looking and styles you liked when you were heavier may not work when you're lighter.

I can speak from experience. While I do generally wear similar things to when I was heavier, I find that styles that I couldn't wear before are much better for me now. Low-rise jeans for example, work much better for me than ones that sit closer to the waist. Before I COULDN'T wear low-rise jeans at all!

The jeans that I used to wear before? If I wear jeans in that style they don't really look all that great on me. Had I bought jeans in smaller sizes anticipating that I would fit into them I would have a lot of jeans that fit but don't look all that great on me.
  • I have lately started buying one pair of jeans a size down - just so I can try them on and see how I'm 'faring'. This has worked out as I typically fit into them (though maybe not well!) a lot sooner than I would expect. I found out yesterday I can wear a Sz 12 in some brands, and I'm a solid Sz 14 down from 16!
  • I'm going nuts with clothes. Like some other people have said, I now can't stand anything loose or baggy. I go to Goodwill honestly almost every week, but sometimes buy nothing and sometimes pick up a few things. Nothing is over $5, though.

For me, being able to wear clothes that fit well are a huge part of the motivation that keeps me going. I've finally settled down a little in buying clothes, and will only buy things I know I love and will wear right away. At first I was pretty bad to buy things just because they fit, or would probably fit soon. It's absolutely true that you don't know how they will look on you even 5 lbs later.

I have a job where I have to dress up, so this is my excuse for the constant shopping. But honestly even when I get to my goal, I will continue to shop Goodwill, just not exclusively. I've been amazed at the quality of what I can find there. And for buying jeans I like it better than a store because there are a million styles there so if you're picky like me, you're more likely to find what you want. I am pretty sure I will never pay more than $5 for a pair of jeans ever again.
  • i am waiting to lose weight before I buy new clothes..
  • I think you should look great regardless of what weight you are.
I wouldn't go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, but I always buy a piece or two here and there when I lose 10 or more pounds.
