Hey, I have a question. Mine has never really been noticeable, but now that I am in my late thirties, I have begun to notice it just a little more. I have been considering waxing or electrolisis (sp?), and I think I'm going to go for the waxing for now (Pain is not really a problem in my world...after three C-Sections I am not going to wimp out over having hair ripped out of my face. ), but I want to know a little more before I have it done. When it grows back in, do you get ingrown hairs, pimples, etc.? Is it darker as it returns? Right after you have it done is it irritated or anything? If so, for how long? I have a black tie event next month, and I was thinking about getting it done for that, but I want to know the "optimum" length before the event so that I'm neither hairy nor red and bumpy.

My upper lip area is slightly red for a few hours afterwards, definitely OK by the next day though. Otherwise, no problem with waxing. The hair does not seem to grow in any darker & no problems with ingrown or pimples. I have noted in the summer when my complexion is slightly darker, that when I wax the upper lip area is a little lighter skin tone for a while. Kind of like exfoliating the top layer of skin makes it a little lighter toned.

Let's see - as far as lips go ... ! I get mine done at the same time as my eyebrows and while it stings a little, it's not bad. It's a little red after for a couple of hours, but I don't get any bumps or spots. I've never gotten an ingrown hair on my lip and it doesn't grow back darker or thicker or anything. OTOH, I haven't noticed it growing back thinner either.
Keep in mind, however, that I'm a natural blonde and so the hair I have on my body is mostly fair naturally. I've noticed that as I've gotten older, I don't tend to get darker hair, but I tend to get more single long hairs on my chin or lip or jawline.
I'd say if you have it done the day before, you should be fine.
I got a Velvet Touch thing ... it's kind of like sandpaper. I tried it for the first time on Wednesday. I'm pretty impressed. I'll try to remember to let you know how it goes.
That's over a week and my lip is still good. Yes, I'm fair but it was pretty fuzzy.
I've always wondered if anyone shaves it.

Shaving does NOT make hair grow back thicker, or faster. What happens, though, is that the stubble starts growing back mid shaft. You are also not going to make any MORE hairs grow there by doing this. You have a set number of hair follicles, and you have what you have. The reason that people think shaving makes the hair grow back thicker is because you can feel the "stubble". If you pluck or wax a hair out completely, when it grows back in, it is a whole new hair. The end of the hair naturally is softer and thinner than it is mid-shaft. However, if you SHAVE it, then when it starts growing out, the end isn't the end-it is the mid-shaft part that basically was hacked off-so it feels stubbly rather than soft. It's kindof like with your legs. You probably had soft hair on your legs as a kid, before shaving, but once you shave-it feels "stubbly" when it grows back, even though there isn't any more hair there.

Cosmetologist here.
Get it done 1 oe 2 days before the event. Eyebrows and upper lip, etc. usually remain reddened for a couple of hours. Taking an ibuprofen beforehand can lessen this. There will be no leftover redness or swelling, and it will be way too soon to have any new growth.
Also-the key to making eyebrow waxing and upper lip waxing less painful is PULLING THE SKIN TAUT. A good waxer will pull the skin really taut before ripping the wax off. This makes a nice, QUICK, and less painful experience. If they don't pull your skin taut, they don't know what they are doing.
Someone said they got a hair trimmer...did you mean one of those Simplique-type things? That has been my favorite little gadget for this type of thing. Painless, effective, perfect!
