  • I have pretty damaged hair and I heard that putting virgin olive oil in your hair will make the frizz go down and make it very soft?
Has anyone done this before? How long should you leave it on your hair for?
  • I have. Left it in overnight. It just got greesey.
  • Oh yeah, thats another thing I wanted to ask - does your hair look greasy for a day or 2 after you use it? I wash my hair everyday.
  • Here is a recipe that I found on care2.com. http://www.care2.com/greenliving/oli...ution_comments

INGREDIENTS (enough for 1 or 2 treatments, depending on the length and thickness of your hair)

    ½ cup olive oil
5 drops frankincense essential oil (others may be substituted, if you wish)
1 plastic bag that can fit over your hair

    1. Pour olive oil into a jar with a lid, then add essential oil. Put lid on jar and shake well to disperse the essential oil. Let sit for 24 hours in a cool, dark place. Shake again before use.

    2. Rinse hair with warm water. Warm 1 tablespoon of oil treatment in the palms of your hands. Using your fingertips (not nails), gently massage the oil into the scalp in a circular motion. Repeat until the entire scalp has been massaged. Rub the ends of your hair with the remaining oil.

    3. Place a plastic bag over your hair, secure by tying or with a hair clip or clothespin, and allow the oil to remain for at least a half-hour.

    4. Rinse well, then shampoo as usual.

(You can leave out the essential oil and just use the olive oil by itself. Even though you are using the olive oil, use a leave in conditioner after you shampoo your hair.)

From the comments that I was reading on that site, not too many women had greasy hair after doing the hair treatment.
  • I've heard olive oil does very good stuff for the whole body. It can help, nails skin etc. I think you just need to find the right way of using it.
  • Many years ago, if we had gotten a disastrous perm (and in those days, EVERYONE had one at some point!) we would use mayonaise -- slop it onto our hair, wrap in plastic wrap (yes, we were lovely) -- wash out after an hour or so. Took a few shampoos to get it out -- but it really helped. Also, a TINY bit of an old product called Alberta VO-5 was very helpful in controlling frizzies. If you used a speck too much, however, you had greasy hair all day.
  • Do they not sell Alberto VO-5 anymore? I used it a couple years ago and it worked great! I thought I had seen it around, but maybe not.
I'll usually use a deep conditioner and leave it in overnight. Those conditioners that come with hair color are good.
Ever since I used the olive oil, I can't stand the smell of it and I get flashbacks of the fiasco.
  • I've tried almond oil overnight. It really helped.
  • I have super dry hair and use a product called, Bio Infusion Olive Oil Shine Serum. they sell it in WalGreens and a few drops distributed through your hair is all you need. You say your hair is damaged? Then I highly recommend only washing it every two or three days (most hairdressers will say that too). If you have an oily scalp then just dry shampoo your part area or sprinkle on baby powder or corn starch let it sit for a few minutes and brush it out.
  • I have very long hair and rub jojoba oil into the bottom half up it every night. If you drench it in oil, you will have problems not being able to wash it all out the next day and it will be greasy. The key is using a moderate amount. The oil completely takes out any little knots in my hair and it looks great after I shampoo the next day.
  • I use olive oil and coconut oil in my hair (alternating, not both at once ). I rub the oil into the ends up to about 1/2 inch from the scalp (not only my scalp, which can be oily) and leave it overnight (I cover my pillow with a towel). The next morning, I wash my hair as usual in the shower. Mind you, just rub in the oil enough that your hair is "damp" with it, don't saturate your whole head. Too much oil will be hard to wash out and will leave you looking "greasy".

I color my hair and even though it's short, it tends to get dry and tangly. Oiling my hair regularly (about once a week or so) has made a HUGE difference in how my hair looks and feels. And it seems to hold color better as well, lasting for longer and looking richer.

  • For those of you who happen to have an accident and get the greasy look... Use equal amounts of Shampoo & Salt. Works like a charm. Take it from a VO-5 gal
  • sleeping with these oils on your heads doesnt ruin your pillowcases? I would think the bags would come off while you sleep?

I have to agree about washing your hair every day. I have very dry, brittle curly hair. I wash my hair on Mondays and Thursdays but use conditioner every day. Massage the shampoo into the scalp paying very litte attention to the ends. I used to pile it all up on top of my head and wash it like that but apparently, for hair like mine, thats wrong.
  • Me and my daughters all use the coconut oil. I just saturate our hair and then we go to sleep. Put a towel over your pillow. The next morning, wash with a mild shampoo and you are good to go. Also, shampoo less frequently. I only wash it about every 4th or 5th day
  • I warm up a small amount of olive oil, put it on my hair, wrap it up in a towel and rest for an hour or so, then use a moisturizing shampoo to wash my hair twice. No grease issues.
