New start tomorrow
New to this. Starting IP using Alt products tomorrow. This has been a great source of info as I'm starting to plan.
New to blogging as well, so hope I'm doing this correctly :) |
I got my first shipment from Nashua Nutrition this weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it came. I tried the white cheddar crisps from Protidiet and thought they were comparable to IP. I also tried Protidiet bacon and cheese omelet and maple oatmeal. I usually make my own omelets but wanted to see if these were like IP. I thought the omelet was good and the oatmeal was okay. I add lots of veggies to my omelets but like the hint of bacon taste in it. The oatmeal was a little goopy but palatable. I'll definitely order from Nashua again.

Nashua Nutrition is great. I placed my order Sat night and had it on Monday!

I get all my alternatives from Nashua Nutrition. Fast service and I always like the extra treat they put in with the order. I mainly order ProtiDiet and ProtiThin products.

Why not coconut or MCT (coconut/ palm oil) oil vs olive oil?
I have seen research showing even some expensive olive oils also contain seed oils. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/is-yo...#axzz3PyxRcI6d coconut oil is a very potent aid to ketogenic fat burning. Has a slight nutty flavor in virgin form. Has a connection to improved brain cognition. It handles high heat wonderfully and doesn't oxidize when exposed to atmosphere. |

I need to do more research on this to find out how accurate the claim is, but it's certainly had me turning down the heat on the pan lately. |
OK ... six sites debunk the above information. The best that I found (in terms of explanation and comparison) is this one at Olive Oil Source.
I know that much of the Asian cooking is done with peanut oil for it's high temp stability, but it looks like a "top shelf" EVOO isn't that far behind. :) |
Oil
There are DEFINTELY different"camps" re: cooking with olive oil. The most middle-ground appears to be to not use at high heat. We don't deep-fry on IP anyway so I don't worry about the cooking. I've read the book, " fats that heal, fats that kill" and am in agreement re: coconut oil. I've never understood why IP limits to grapeseed & olive. My guess is simplicity and to remove choices/guesswork. Most olive oils are rancid or not packaged as labeled. Grapeseed isn't good for us (Google: grapeseed oil toxic) Calorie-wise a fat is a fat. When I started IP, I told my coach that fats were non-negotiable for me as I refused to consume what I consider to be unhealthy fats (we've been lied to about saturated fat and were enouraged for years to consume unhealthy trans and hydrogenated fats and also toxic corn & canola). I did limit fat amounts to IP rules. I think my coach accepted & then ignored since I was probably more educated than she on the subject. I'm also leaning more and more toward only consuming grass-fed whey products and my most recent purchases are only stevia sweetened. When I started IP, I viewed the processed packs as temporary. If I'm going to continue use, it's time to ramp up the quality. |
Thank you for the information Lisa, I had no idea, never actually thought about it. I bought grape seed oil just because of this diet and never gave it a thought. wow. Now I'll go reading. I've seen some recipes for coconut oil and wanted to try it. You have convinced me, is it sold in most stores or something we have to order on line?
I myself eat to much of the red meat on this diet. Leanest possible of course but still red meat. I've been worried about the same thing and thought I should be looking for a more healthy meat. The think that has stopped me is the cost. It's already $7 a lb for the low fat. Thanks for the education off I go to investigate! |

Here is a pretty good breakdown of the fats.
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/fats/#axzz3PyxRcI6d Mark Sisson is a very reputable source and chris kressor is also. I stick by his information in general. His explanation on Olive oil is very reasonable. I am curious of the argument against coconut primarily with IP. I am not afraid of fats either. Coconut oil has 1 drawback -- don't get too much in a dose. It great laxative that way. For a ketogenic diet plan coconut should be a no brainer by every measure. It heat stable at high temps, doesn't oxidize, converts to ketones easily (great for helping in ketosis), Can clear keto brain fog. using refined it liquid at room temperature. We also use grass fed butters but it not much. I figure the fat fear with IP is part of the dietary cholesterol debate that has been known in many circles as false for decades but just know is getting mainstream despite the major organizations not changing their stance. the other problem is excess use of fats are calorie dense and would throw off calories pretty fast. |
I have pretty much converted to coconut oil and am still doing so since I have been on IP using alternatives. I do still use grape seed and olive occasionally but there are too many positives with coconut oil. It hasn't hindered my weight loss thus far.

I asked my coach about coconut oil..she said "i have to check for you". I have used CO for the past 2 years in my home. LOVE the stuff but concerned that I wont get into ketosis using it. I just started IP again after a LONG break.
