Happy Monday everyone, man are the weekends hard! I tried to make good choices. I have started to use low-fat cream soups in all casseroles and low fat sour cream and cheeses too! My family doesn't see a difference (or taste). I weigh in tonight-I am with you Aphil-I am at 179- I've lost 29.6 so far! This morning I took some Romanian students through our state's prevention programs, did you know they have 1 in 5 children with AIDS!? It's mostly because of the orphanages-they don't feed they children well, so when they get run down and sick, they give them blood tranfusions (to help them out) and the blood is not screened well-thus the AIDS! Moms, kiss your healthy kids and feed them healthy foods-we are so lucky to be able to make good choices and be examples for our children. Enough lecturing, back to work-everyone loves their probation officer-especially on a Monday morning!!!

I think I've hit a real "turning point" revelation for myself...it seems like I should have realized this before now, but I never really believed it when I heard about "carb sensitivity."

I never believed it until I realized that when I ate a predominance of carbs in the morning, I was setting myself up to binge all day.

This is what happened yesterday. I ate a high-carb burrito for breakfast, then some cereal later in the morning, and I was off and binging, finding myself driving through BOTH Burger King and McDonald's last night and eating myself silly.

Today I made sure I had a big serving of egg whites first thing, and I'm not experiencing any cravings.

What works for me is avoiding processed carbs like the plague. This is a real problem because I LOVE processed carbs. I love bagels and cereal and pasta.

But I think I'm going to avoid them if I want to lose weight.

High protein, fruits and veggies, those are going to be my staples.

Rapunzel-since I am borderline diabetic, I am extremely sensitive to processed carbs or things very high in sugar. What I have found that works best for me, was switching to whole grains instead of processed starches...like Mini Wheats, Rasin Bran, All-Bran, Grape Nuts, or Kashi cereals rather than the more processed kinds. It has also helped tremendously to eat whole wheat pasta instead of the regular kind-most groceries sell spaghetti and macaroni in whoel wheat versions now in the aisle with the regular stuff. When I do eat something now and then more processed/refined-like a hamburger bun or a small sweet like ice cream or a small piee of chocolate-it helps if I do it as "dessert" right after a meal containing protein, than if I were to do it on an empty stomach-the protein helps keep your blood sugars stabilized-and since you just ate a meal, you are more satisfied with a smaller treat, like a Hershey Kiss instead of a whole candy bar.

Thumbs down

I can't eat carbs either, or I find myself shaky and snacking all day. I try to eat salads and protien, though I do love a raisin English muffin! But it seems to set off a binge and creates a nasty sweet tooth, so I am better off not having them in the house.

Rapunzel2 and Idealperson, I would have SWORN over a year ago that I just could not have my morning coffee without at least one piece of toast/english muffin/bagel...and my usual was 2 pieces. But yes, those refined starches just make me want MORE!!! either then or later in the morning. It has taken a while, but now I can look forward to just the coffee, then whatever sensible breakfast food...my usual is Kashi Good Friends mixed with yogurt, or oatmeal with cut-up apple.

It IS hard to cut down/give them up, but it can be done.

And - info from a nutritionist from years ago, that I couldn't apply then but see now - coffee can be an extreme appetite stimulant. If you have associations of a cup of coffee with a refined-carb treat, whether it's only 1 allowed cookie or whatever...having that between-meal cup of coffee might be making you crave carbs even more...it sure does for me. And that's when we have to reach for our water!!

Idealperson, that is SO sad about the Romanian children!! I know the world only became aware of their plight right after the Cecausku (spelling is wrong, I know) regime. Such tragedy in the world!

onto more superficial matters - husband just brought home a half-gallon of ice cream, fudge topping and cool whip -sigh- but I haven't had a single taste, 'cause I'm afraid I wouldn't stop at a small serving. So I dragged myself up here, away from the temptation...

27 days 'til our road trip! tick tick tick

Have a great night,
Holly
