John Saul used to be one of my favorite authors... from the time I was 12 I read every single one of his books & anticipated the next one anxiously. Then he did that series of books which I had no interest in (the chronicles of something??) - Anyway, after about the first 12 I kept buying them but stopped reading them. He's still got a special place in my heart (being my first favorite novelist ever) but his books are all the freakin' same now!! LOL
I am currently reading "A Teenager's Journey" by Richard Pelzer... the follow up to his first book "A Brother's Story" which was a follow up to the series by David Pelzer regarding their family history of being abused as kids (true stories)
jonathan strange and mr. norrell (about magicians ..wizards? in england..sorta of harry potter for grown ups)
jewelers directory of gems - for work
you on a diet - better then I thought it would be
James Patterson...The Beach House is a good one, loved it and all his books.
The same with The Secret Life of Bees...very good book! I do hope she comes out with a #2.
I've got three books I want to read just haven't been in a reading mood for a while.
#1 Night...Elie Wiesel
#2 Twelve Sharp...Janet Evanovich
#3 Plum Lovin'...Janet Evanovich
I also forgot to mention that I'm reading Tortilla Flat by Steinbeck. It is a quick read and I started it on a metro ride, now I just need to finish it in between the other 3 books I'm reading.
Reading "The Wrong Man" by John Katzenbach--having a hard time because it's about an obsessive type and my daughter just got rid (fingers crossed) of a boyfriend turned stalker.
Reading this board. Sadly enough, I finished "Variable Star" tonight. What to read, what to read. Ok, anyone have any suggestions? I'm a King/Koontz fan...err King as he USED to be. This new stuff he puts out, keep it. I have read some Patterson...he's ok. Saul, not too great. Lovecraft, TOO weird. I'm looking for an author I just don't know about who writes as well as King or Koontz, or Robert Heinlein if anyone's familiar with his work. I'm just outta stuff to read and I'm extremely picky about who I like.
I'm too into magazines right now, haven't read anything much since the ChickLits read that Million Little Pieces book, which was okay, but not terribly memorable for me.
I like that Love is a mix tape type genre, I hear you can't judge a book by its cover but that's the kind of no-brainer chick read I like, something pinky, pastel, or cutesy font; like a beach read. I like to read about single people, dating, sex-in-the-city type stuff. I like the Shopaholic series, and it turns out, alot of the books I read are set in England, written with a bit of an accent and I find myself using words like rubbish in everyday speech.
I have Lissey's story (King) in my room. Only because EVERY year (WITHOUT fail) I get my mother King's newest book for Christmas or her Bday (nov) so I get it this year and she went out and got it HERSELF!? WTH? I saw a friend at work reading it one day and she said she could barely get through it, I think she abandoned it halfway through.
I think I'd like to pick up the Memory Keepers Daughter, a friend picked it up for herself and LOVES it, I think she'll loan it to me when she's done.
Weren't we going to read something about a Kite Runner? I can't remember the title?
Oh and I didn't read the Secret Life of Bees myself but of course heard good things, so I got The Mermaid Chair and HATED it. Can't remember why, but I wasn't that into it.
Oh and I feel bad about it but I don't care for Nicholas Sparks or that kind of thing...I always feel like they make cheap shots at making me cry, like I just know someone is going to die at the end. I did like the Wedding and the one that went with it, but I just always feel so manipulated at the end of those. I can't describe it, almost like the line of the story is too cliche...I don't mind running emotional through a book, I just hate cheap shots, like an over done emotional scene. Like when you watch a scary movie and all is so quiet...and then CREEEAK, its a cat jumping off the shelf, not scary, just a cheap shot.
Now I'm getting the urge to head off to the library...not to mention we're finally getting snow, it sounds so fab to snuggle up with a good book, fire, a cuppa joe and a blankie....of course, set to the background of the phone, the TV, fighting children, whining hubby, LOL. Thanks for the ideas. Oh and I like to pick up ideas from Cosmo or Glamour or People magazines, though with that kind of reccommendations, they're usually harder to pick up. The end of the year People Mag had a list of the top books of 2006, if I find it, I'll try to post them. I'd like to work my way through that list, all different kinds of genres.
The Kite Runner is an excellent book. I could hardly put it down. I hear they are making it into a movie which may or may not be a good thing. I think the ONLY book that I've read that was made into a good movie was Snow Falling on Cedars. Both the book and the movie were excellent. I don't even want to go into the disaster that the movie The DaVinci Code became (what a bore!).
I'm currently reading Hannibal Rising and it's okay, but definitely not as good as the Red Dragon.
My DD picked up The Innocent Man by John Grisham. She can't get into it, so that will probably be my next read unless I pick something up this weekend. I have a $100 Barnes & Noble card from Christmas, but for me, that won't be enough!!!
I also love those English chick lit books! They're fun. I tried to read As I Lay Dying by Faulkner a few months ago and abandoned that one. I just couldn't get into it. I loved To Kill a Mockingbird. I also like memoirs and just finished one by Alan Alda and one by a guy who had just been told he had 6 months to live (it was actually upbeat).
Oh and I didn't read the Secret Life of Bees myself but of course heard good things, so I got The Mermaid Chair and HATED it. Can't remember why, but I wasn't that into it.
I did the opposite - I read The Secret Life of Bees, LOVED it and then read the Mermaid Chair and HATED it. Please don't not read Bees because of Mermaid.
I just finished "The Nutmeg of Consolation" by Patrick O'Brian - book 14(?) in the Aubrey-Maturin series. If you like historical fiction, it is definitely one of the greatest series ever written.
I am currently reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. I am having some trouble getting into the former, but absolutely loving the latter.
Whenever my kids ask me to read something, I do, thus I became hooked on Harry Potter and the Eragon, Eldest, E something trilogy.
Right now my daughter has me reading The Bridge to Terebithia and my son has me reading To Kill a Mockingbird. I read the latter in the 12th grade and saw the movie but can't remember enough of it to have useful discussions with him as he is reads it for school.
I read Of Mice and Men in Nov/Dec. (another school project) and it was quite good.
When I'm not reading for my kids, I love Kathy Reichs Bones books, JD Robb and Tami Hoag. I particularly loved Kill the Messenger. I couldn't put that sucker down!
