RedAutumn ~ I sure know how you feel; my DH was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's and that was very upsetting for him, so he was very irritable for awhile. SO, I also prayed with him that GOD would fill his heart, mind, and soul with joy and peace and love.
Plus, I was inspired to use another tactic that has been working very well; whenever he gets snarky, I compliment him. Well, he is so surprised that he starts laughing; and it changes his whole attitude. Now, it's not like I never compliment him; trust me, I compliment him way more than he does me. Getting a compliment out of my DH is like pulling teeth, but I digress.
So, I use a few overwhelming ones like -- "Oh, won't you please smile for me, you look so handsome when you smile." And, when he was changing socks, I whistled and told him he had sexy legs. That one really got him; he laughed, and laughed, and laughed. OR, "When you're happy, your face beams!" Or, "You are much cuter when you laugh." I have a few others too, and it works every time.
Sometimes, just a hug can make a difference; or making his favorite dinner (he adores Shepherd's pie and hamburgers). When he gets impatient with our furry puppy (grumbly, I mean), I remind him how much our boy loves him and that does it. Our NIKO is so cute and lovable; I can't help but laugh at the antics he pulls to get DH's attention. He dances and jumps, and runs all over the house like a maniac; before long, DH is laughing again. I think NIKO is a very clever canine buddy.
Sending up ^prayers^ for both you & your DH, and your daughter; and that the house sells too ...
BTW, do have a couple of friends (or DH's) or relatives that could come over for a weekend painting spree; make a nice potluck help yourself dinner for all, and have some fun with it?
