Trying to increase speed on the treadmill?
or... Trying to increase the amount of time running, not worrying about speed?
Just FYI I currently run on my treadmill at 2% incline at 5mph for about 20 minutes, then slowly up my speed to 5.5 and stop at 30minutes and speed walk on a steep incline as a cool down. I do this for about 6-10minutes, or when I hit 3 miles total distance, whichever comes first.
Thanks for the input!
Intervals! Intervals are the best for weight loss. 'X' number of minutes going fast, then 'X' number of minutes going slow to recover - rinse, repeat.
So, I haven't posted in a while. But I am so inspired by reading how well everyone is doing... I had to jump back in.
I got the brilliant idea to train for a Sprint distance Triathlon and a Half Marathon at the same time. I figured - I am already doing some running for the Tri, why not do a little extra and throw in a HM. WTF was I thinking? I keep having to take rest days because my legs get so sore and my knees get to aching. But then I think about how far I've come and how GOOD it feels to be using my body...
I have been doing a lot on the Treadmill - just because of where and when I have to fit it all into my schedule. I did 6.5 miles on monday in 1.5 hours. I did 8 miles (almost 2 weeks ago) in 2 hours. So, I am figuring the HM will take me 3 hours. I can get in 4 more long runs before the Tri/HM. So, I should be able to get up to 10 miles. Which I have read is enough to do for a HM... though, I was really hoping for more.
Sorry... I am rambling. I have a 5k after work today. I am curious to see if I have improved on my time!
Hey ladies! I just wanted to pop in and say hi! I'm in Chicago, been here for a few days - throwing diet to the wind but keeping my excerise and mental state in check! Had an awesome run along the lake yesterday, about 5 miles I think my GPS was freaking out so I'm not sure. And today I did some hot yoga - whoa! I'll run tomorrow and maybe Saturday and then my half marathon is Sunday!
Re: distance or speed for weight loss, it doesn't really matter. So here's the deal, it's all about calories expended and when it comes to running you burn *about* the same cals not matter how fast you run. The differences between running 3 miles in 30 mins or 3 miles in say 20 mins are pretty small. So in the end it just depends on what works for you as long as you are meeting your calorie goals. A safe rule of thumb is 100 cals burned a mile, although if you weigh more you will burn a little more. But we tend to overestimate our burn and underestimate our intake, so error on the conservative side with 100 cals per mile. Have fun!
So, I haven't posted on here in awhile, I've been busy posting my progress on the Featherweights August chat thread...anyway.
I'm working my way to 4 miles, slowly but surely. I'm up to 3.2 miles now. I'm doing okay, I think but it's just so darn hot and humid, it's killing me, lol.
Anyhow, my older son said he wants to come with me tomorrow when I run. I'm so excited to run with him. It'll make for some mother/son bonding time. Plus, I'd love to run with someone and who better than my darling boy? LOL.
I'm continuing to see changes in my body due to the running. Saddlebags are gone and cellulite is almost non-existent - I'm encouraged by my progress in a mere two months. Yay me!!
Hey, ncuneo, you aren't the only one who threw caution to the wind with diet, but kept up with exercise though not the caliber you do.
Just got back from my 4 day trip and logged another 4 miles - 2 on Tuesday and 2 this morning. I hope to get back into longer runs next week now that I am home and the kids start school soon -yay!
Took an ab class at the gym on Wednesday. Took a spin class yesterday. Then ran in 5k race last night. Time was just over 38 mins. Not my best, not my worst. EVERYTHING HURTS. I am going to spend the next three days resting. I NEVER thought I would get to a point in my life where I was exercising TOO MUCH. Lol!!
My running time this morning was 24 minutes (exactly) for 3.2 miles. A personal best. Might not seem like much to the more seasoned runners but considering that I just started two months ago and I'm not exactly twenty , I think it's something to be proud of, lol.

Wow! I'm on the otherside of 40 and have been running for 4 months and I have your time for 2 miles (maybe a minute or 2 less), not three! Your speed is just shy of 8 minute miles. My goal is to get to 10. I think you'll reach your goal of 4 miles sooner than your siggie says and much, much faster than an hour. Congrats!
You all are faster than me. My personal best for a 5K is 42m37s. I typically average 15 min miles.
The thing I love about jogging is that I am not out to beat anyone else...just myself. Well, I guess I am out to beat the cut off time for any race I might be in.
'Morning, everyone! I bought two new pairs of running shoes and, wow, does it make a difference. I could tell that I wasn't struggling as much and actually enjoyed my run today. Next week I am going to up my mileage a bit. I have 9 weeks left until my first 5K, so I'm hoping that's enough time to get up to 3.1 miles. I'm at 1.5 now and I'm going to slowly work my way up. I'm nervous, lol!!
