Tonight (Wednesday) I hope to run 3 miles. Since I'm in NY Friday and Saturday I hope to run tonight and Sunday. I want to aim for 10 miles this week and I already did 4 miles on Monday. So 3 miles tonight and 3 miles on Sunday. Next week, I'll probably aim for 11 or 12 miles in total.
If I feel like running more tonight I will. I'm not really that concerned at this stage about going over the "10%" each week increment. I think I could probably jump to running a bit more already with a minimum base run of 3 miles per run.
What a treat to wake up on Dec 1 and find the December Running thread is already on page 2!
I think I'm doing a 5K this weekend (as in, I haven't registered yet). If I do get around to registering, my goal will be 25 minutes.
I have been reminded this week why it is so hard for me to stick to an exercise schedule during the winter. Rainy and really windy outside, and my son is too sick to go to the gym. Yep, I know, I can do a video in the basement or something, but a) it's not running, and b) I hate videos in the basement.
Dyeral, how fast are you running? My advice would be to slow down that second mile a bit and see if that helps. If you're already at the slowest possible jog speed, try just extending your "hands free" time by 30 seconds each day. Like, if you can make it to 12 minutes today, try to make it to 12:30 next time, and 13:00 the time after that, etc. So much of running is psychological -- if you set a concrete goal for a small improvement, you will often find you can do it -- you just had to make yourself do it.
Ncuneo, I'm telling you -- San Diego Rock n Roll 2012! I will be there -- will you?
Milmin, thank you so much for the inspiring words. You remind me that I have no excuse to sit on the couch and not use my body to its greatest potential. I need to be grateful for what I've been given and demonstrate that gratitude by honoring myself.
It is ice rink conditions here this morning, so back to the treadmill. There is not quite enough snow to run with my screw shoes - they tend to feel funny and clack really loudly without at least an inch or so on the ground.
I can definitely feel yesterday's run in my abs. Everything else feels good and lose.
Great stories people. Makes my morning litany of excuses seem pretty insubstantial.
WOW MIlmin...don't know how I missed your post...your right WE CAN DO THIS!!! Way to go...and hoping for a great finish for you in your next 1/2 marathon!
This thread is inspiring. Congrats to all your successes!
I'm working up the to the 5km mark. Currently, I'm doing the C25k program and am starting week 4. I used to run 5km but I'm trying to build back up to it. It is so easy to lose it if you stop for any length of time. I want to be able to do a 5km next spring. Happy Running everyone!
I star running this spring , I did my only and first race on sep 26 , a half marathon I did great , my goal was not walking , and did , on 2:18 min.
Then, i read that you need to take a rest , 1 or 2 weeks , what a really bad mistake , that break turn into 2 months , i ran just like 3 days in total , in those 2 days, so i want to go back , planning to do another half on may ...
My question here is ... how , what do i need to run on winter , I live in Toronto and i not treadmill ...
Can I join if I am not yet technically running?
I am NOT running yet, and I just started walking. I am definitely on the C part of the C25k. HOWEVER, I need to have something I am walking FOR, otherwise it seems kind of pointless, so I am signed up for my first 5k on Feb. 6th at the Rosebowl. I don't even know if that is enough time, but I figure I gotta start somewhere!
Burrrr! 37 degree 4.5 miler this am! I know 37 is a cake walk to you east coasters, but for this so cal girl it was like running on Popsicles!
My thermal Nike gear and gloves do the trick for cold weather, but I think Toronto gets quite a bit colder than here, but something similar should get you through the winter.
I run outside year round and I think out temperatures are pretty similar to Toronto. I use a mishmash of thermal gear. I also have a good set of wind proof pants and jacket for those truly awful days. I have a deal with myself that if it is below -5 F (which is about -20 C) I run on a treadmill. The hardest part is keeping your hands and nose warm and not overdressing and getting sweaty. I use lots of layers.
Also essential DIY screw shoes for those icy sidewalks. I cannot post the link since I have not posted enough, but just google screw shoes and the instructions from competitive runner will be one of the first listings.

If you have a chance to run in NY, DO IT!!! Central park is one of my favorite places in the world to run!
I'd love to run in Central Park! I might get lost though and I think our hotel is not that close. If I'm able to wake up wicked early and allow my friend to sleep in some I might be able to do it.
So, tonight run. It was only 2.6 miles. I was hoping for at least a 5k and I could have easily have done it. Now for my rationalizing of coming up short on my goal:
1) It was cold and pouring rain.
2) I didn't want to go too far over my running miles for the week if I'm going to do my long run on Sunday.
3) I stopped at the bottom of the hill of the street to my apartment. If I kept running I'd have gone further away from my place..
Excuses excuses...the bottom line is I felt fine and should have done the rest of my run. Sunday I want to run for at least 5 miles. I'd have taken 3 days off (if I don't run in NY) and I'd be well rested. I'd then hit my goal of running over 11 miles for the week.
I am tapering this month, so only about 60 miles.
I have a 5k on December 11, not sure I'll break my last PR- 27:50 that still has me impressed, LOL> Marathon Training Starts January 3rd! Woot, Woot!
I've starting running on the treadmill for the past month and a half. My body still isn't used to it entirely. So my goal is to be able to run 2 miles without holding onto the sides at all. I can do the first 10 mins without holding on and then the remaining time I alternate between the two. Any tips to overcome this would be greatly appreciated!
A few key things to remember-
Make sure you fuel prior to the start of your run, it will help sustain with your body using those calories for fuel in the beginning of your run, it's like priming an engine before you start it!
When you hit that transition mark where you start to feel week after mile 1....some experience anywhere between mile 1 and mile 2 that's because your body is making that shift change, it's noticing that you need to break that sweat, cool the body down, search and start using reserved fuel and that weakness point of the run is when you start to hang on. Instead try to taper down on your speed. So if you are jogging a 5.0 for ten minutes and feel that need to hold on, avoid it! Instead drop your speed down say 4.8 and see if that helps, if not drop it again slowly in small increments till you feel yourself comfortable. when you have given yourself five minutes at this stage pop that speed back up to 5.0 and run it to the finish.
