Well I have not quit yet I just forgot to post. I am up to 2 miles of running now. Super slow miles though - 12 min miles to be exact. yes, I can go faster, much faster but until I am in better shape I am trying not to overdo it and get hurt again. I don't know what it is but going faster seems to injure me like 75% of the time. Why is that? So yeah my goal is to continue these 2 mile runs until they are easier (the last 1/2 mile was tiring but not impossible). I would like to be at 3-4 miles by mid-June when DH is home.
Good job Cat! And I think you are very, very wise to take your time and build a good strong base. Most people when starting (or returning to) running want to rush right into speed work (tempo runs, fartleks, intervals) and even if their cardio systems are fully capable, their muscles, joints, tendons, etc. AREN'T. And they get injured and wonder why!
I had a nice 4 miles this morning and I think I am enjoying what will turn out to be the last of the cool weather here in the south. I'm not looking forward to July and August when my mileage will be peaking right along with the temperatures. Ack.
Cat, you go with your awesome two miles! Keep up the great work! We were at McChord for three years and LOVED it in the Pacific Northwest. Tom's looking into a contracting position on Whidbey for when he retires. We'd love to come back! Say hi to the mountain for us!
Josephine, I'm glad you enjoyed the cool weather!
I got in six miles this morning, but every step seemed like a fight. Some days are just not good running days. But I did it. It's done. And now I rest up for the big ten miles this weekend.

Slow is better. Speed injures. It takes about twice as long for the bones and tendons to adapt to increased demands as it does your cardiovascular system. So you run and you think you can run faster, because you can, but the body is not ready.
To be a long term runner, run slow most of the time...like 90-95% of the time. Slow. Run farther rather than faster. I didnt run one step between my 10K and my HM that was anything faster than relaxed easy pace.
Ennay, as usual, thanks for being one of our running gurus!
I did my Saturday run today since it's supposed to be rainy tomorrow. I clocked my 5K time for the First Annual 3FC 5K Run/Walk (24:23) and then went on to finish my five miles in ANOTHER personal record of 43:48! Man, it was hard, though. You know how sometimes you're just stupid? Maybe not. I *could* be the only one. So we're going to Florida next week to see Tom (who I haven't seen in about a month) and, of course, I want to look smashing in my bathing suit so I thought I'd drop my calories to 1,000 for this week (JUST this week) to make the most of what I can lose. Well, I really haven't been that hungry. I've been focusing on getting at least 65g of protein and I've actually been around 80g every day, and the rest of the calories have been vegetables, a smattering of fruit, and a couple whole grains thrown in there. But yesterday's run was a bit of a challenge. And today when I set off, my hands and feet were all tingly. Tomorrow's back to maintenance level with lots of good, whole foods. Gotta get myself fueled up to do the ten miles on my schedule for this weekend. Sometimes I'm such a moron.
Kara -- way to go speedy! Killer 5k pace and 5 miler pace, you can fly! I can only imagine your body's shock at having to do that on 1000 calories! And yet you performed like a star! I think it is smart to get back on a normal calorie plan, though! Good luck with the 10 this weekend, clearly you will rock them.
I did my 6 miles this morning in the "Ennay wants it more than once" category (or something like that, I can't quite remember what it was called and I'm too lazy to look it up) in 1:07:42. I got to watch the sun coming up over the beach and it was really pretty. It's hard to get out of bed at 5:30 am on a Saturday, but it really pays to beat the heat here in the south and I love the stillness and calm of early morning runs.
Getting excited for Helen for London. I know it isnt as joyous as it could be but she still is going to kick major booty. What time does it start? 9 am London time? (Web designers organizers really need to be careful when they put a countdown clock on a website...the london one says it is going to start at 9 am Pacific time, which is something like 8 at night there. - DO A FIXED CLOCK)
Kara! 1000 and running as much as you are and still nursing? Be careful gal.
I know. I know. I know. This morning I had 300 calories worth of oatmeal with craisins and walnuts and this afternoon I had 300 calories worth of egg white omelet with fresh spinach (ate the WHOLE container - 2 cups!), mushrooms, and cheese with a banana nut muffin. I should be good to go. And I won't do that again. Promise!
Josephine, I'm jealous that you got to see the sun rise over the ocean! I'm a big beach bum.
Helen, we're all rooting for you!
Ennay, I loved your "race report" on Gary's thread! Talk about errands! I'm glad I'm not the only one that drags the kids out in the stroller to do errands. They always think I'm crazy. Every time we leave the house it's, "Are we walking or driving?"
Double digits today! Got my ten miles in and I'm so glad to be sitting and relaxing now (after the cool down and stretch, of course). Dinner's in the oven and I still need a shower. Better get a move on!
