Hi!
I'm 36 years old, and was diagnosed as having Hypothyroidism as well as a cyst on my thyroid in 1989. In 1991, I had to have one-half of my thyroid removed because the biopsy of this cyst came back "abnormal". Like others here, I will be on Synthroid for life.
As far as diet goes, I find that a diet lower in carbs works well for me. Weight loss is slow, of course, but I feel terrific. I read somewhere on the www.thyroid.about.com website that persons with thyroid problems need at least 50-60 grams of carbohydrate to convert thyroid hormones T4 to T3. If I can find the article again, I will post the link for those who may be interested in reading it.
I would love to read it. I go to that site but never saw anything about 50-60 grams of carbs. I don't know much about low carb diets, I've scanned through them but can't seem to figure out what I can and can't eat.
With Hypo there are soooo many foods we should eat in moderation that it really hard. For years I ate all the 'free' veggies that W.W said I could then found out there no good for us.
I forgot to mention that it's been 7 weeks of w.w and I'm down 10lbs. I've stopped eating radishes, limit my green vegetables (except lettuce) and I've tried to avoid soy as much as possible. Bet, finding products that don't contain soy is virtually impossible.
I also limit my intake of peaches and pears and gave up banana's.
Well, I'm having a difficult time finding the article on about.com about needing at least 50 grams of carbs for T4/T3 conversion. However, I did find it mentioned on the message boards a few times.
So....I am writing to the Thyroid Expert at MayoClinic.com to see what his thoughts and opinions are about this topic. Hopefully, he'll respond soon. Stay tuned.... :-)
I don't know either, I just typed in foods not to eat when Hypo and this whole list came up. I decided to try and eat my veggies in moderation and it seems to work for me. I don't know for how long it will last and maybe I would have lost this week anyway. I'll try anything to lose this weight. Short of starving myself. HaFoods to Avoid for hypothyroid
SUGGESTED should be eaten cooked and in moderation, unless otherwise noted to avoid it entirely:
Foods high in copper can suppress thyroid activity. These include: avocadoes, liver, soybeans and walnuts.
Almonds, Asparagus, Babassu (a palm-tree coconut fruit popular in Brazil and Africa)
HI,
Why did you stop eating bananas?? I don't eat alot of the veggies listed above but I don't know if I can give up sweet potatoes. I am glad to see that carrots where not on the list. DM
I think there is alot about having hypothroid that I don't know about and I am finding some things on the internet confusing. I don't have the money to see a dietician so any information that you can pass on to me is appreciated. DM
I don't know much myself. I surf the net and do a lot of try and miss. My doc never said anything about diet, but from reading about it I think that some foods should be avoided. Of course, what works for you may not work for me. So there is a lot of hit and miss. Since I started w.w again 11 weeks ago I have lost 11lbs. But, I do limit my vegies now something I never did before.
I do work with a dietician and she told me to limit broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and veggies like that because they inhibit the thyroid hormones from being utilized properly. Cooking does something to them, so if you limit raw that's good. Bananas and sweet potatoes are very high carbs. She has me on no more than 100 grams of carbs a day. High protein and low fat. No white starches or sugar. I've done really well with it.
I'm sorry I don't understand your sentence, do you mean limit eating them raw or limit eating them cooked? I'd be happy just to be able to eat them at all. Cabbage is one of my favorite's and broccoli is a close second, then peas, green beans and corn. God I hate this disease.
I eat a banana a day for my heart, I remember the drs. telling Grandma to do that. I might eat one sweet potate a month, two in November and December (LOL). I don't eat corn or peas because of the carbs. so mostly its a can of green beans and raw baby carrots. I do eat manderian orange slices and applesauce or an apple a day also. But knowing what is better for me cooked and whats better for me raw is confusing.
I was doing Weight Watchers but the leader decided she didn't want to be a leader anymore and there was no one else to take her place. The nearest one is too far to get every week. I didn't think it would be this easy to get back into bad habits. I am trying to get myself back to doing what I was when there was a WW, I had lost 40 lbs. so but had stopped losing and shortly after that I found out I had hypothyroid.
