Trish, our high temperatures have been record setting for June, but we have had temps in the 100s, just not in June. I can remember sleeping in the heat without air condition but now I can't believe we did it. Back in the 70s very few people had air condition in their homes. Now most do, except for the really old houses in small towns. I remember when DHs brothers bought a window air condition unit for their mothers bedroom, and they would make her stay in her room on really hot days. They went up to check on her and she had the second window open. They told her to close it and she said "I want fresh air!". So they took it out.
I agree the manufacturers can put whatever they want into the food, and put whatever they want on the label. I just try not to eat processed foods. My biggest downfall is rice mixes. I love them but they are probably full of sodium and other undesirable ingredients. Sometimes I only use half of the flavor packet and/or add extra plain rice. I love rice. DH has started liking it too. I don't eat much canned soup except for using cream of mushroom or chicken in recipes. Once I found a recipe to use instead of cream soup but I never used it. Its just so fast to use cream soup.DH liked to eat canned food for his lunch, canned chili and stew, and also boxed noodle mixes. Its horrible food to eat but he likes it. He rarely eats breakfast anymore, A small lunch, and is very hungry for dinner. I try to eat less during the day so I'm hungry for dinner when he is. I hate eating dinner when I'm not hungry. Im really glad you have Dr Tans book to give you tested information on how to eat for cancer. People like me who have never experienced cancer in my family don't really understand how what you eat makes such a difference in cancer treatment. I knew about chemo and radiation but not eating. I don't know if my friend ate differently, but she was already eating low carb for her diabetes. That may have helped her. Did you ever look into Fairlife milk? They talk about it a lot on the low carb/Keto site. I just read about it and it is higher protein and lower carb than regular milk. |
Carol Sue I like using cream of mushroom and chicken soups for cooking especially when cooking roasts. I still us it and just don't eat the soup. There are creams that can be made using HWC and cream cheese. I guess I'm going to learn how to cook all over again and just hope DH will like it. If he doesn't, I will have to make one for me and one for him.
I am on VLC as of today. I will check out the Fairlife if I can get it, but not sure if I will try it since DH ends up having to drink it. At this point it is easier to just forget it and drink water or tea. Weight was 156.8 lbs FBG 97 Ketones 1.2 and hopefully this will go up some with me doing VLC. I can have a small salad and a small serving of veggies to keep the carbs down as low as possible. I had my Collagen coffee and less than 2 oz of smoked sausage. I probably won't buy the smoked sausage any more because I want to eat as little processed meat. However, I still love my bacon and alternate it with regular mild sausage. Funny they say no or little processed but no one worries about bacon. Dr. Westman doesn't worry about animal research because he says he is a human not a mouse. LOL Your friend who had cancer was ahead of the game because she was already eating low carb. The research I read about (these are mice research) said those who were eating KD before cancer treatment had better results. That is why I am praying that if I get on a very good VLC/KD that I will have better results when I start my 2nd round of chemo. I also will use some fasting around the infusions as well. Headed out for eye appointment praying I will be able to juggle things so I can get cataract surgery as well as dental cleaning and repairs as needed. BBL |
Appointment with eye doctor went very well. I will have right eye surgery on July 2 and the left eye on July 11. This works out very nice because I will have my teeth cleaned this next week and hopefully get any cavities fixed before I start back on my infusions.
I've done well with my eating today. I was too tired when I got home and of course couldn't see well because my eyes were dilated so I just had a very small salad of greens with EVOO, a serving of rotisserie chicken and a serving of SF jello. I don't know if I'm just tired or what but I haven't been hungry since then. I had to push to get my calories planned for today up to 1002 to please MFP If I do end up eating the plan my total carbs will be only 14. However, I doubt I will eat all of it.. |
Hi all,
I was just diagnosed with pre-diabetes in March and trying to get back to a healthy A1C level. Tracking my food on My Fitness Pal and going to water aerobics. I believe I need to start strength training. I have weights in our extra bedroom but haven't incorporated it into my routine yet. Wondering if I need to get a blood glucose monitor or wait until I retest in 6 months and then get one if I haven't turned things around through diet and exercise. Opinions would be greatly appreciated. When I was diagnosed in March my beginning weight was 211 - weighed this morning 203.8 seems like it's coming off slow but I am focused on doing the right things now. I'm doing timed eating with a 12-hour eating window and right now my window is closed and I need to transition to water only. Getting in enough water daily is a challenge for me. I'm still doing diet soda which I know isn't good for me but trying to do less and less of it. Glad I'm back on this site and that I found this thread. Really need support, DH has stage 4 cancer and has chosen no treatment continues to eat junk and smoke cigarettes but I need to focus on my health. |
Hi Millie. Welcome to 3Fat Chicks and the Diabetes Thread. Trish and I are both senior citizens who have been battling Diabetes for a,while, Fat Mad is a little younger but doesn't post as often. There are a few others who post now and then. We're all willing to help you as much as we can.
I suggest you get a meter and start to test your blood sugar regularly. It will keep you on track. I use a Relion. Meter from Walmart. It is inexpensive and so are the strips. If you have ant particular questions I'm sure one of us can help. It sounds like you are doing the right things so far. When is your next A1c? Do you take any meds? Even if you turn things around your diabetes won't be gone. You will still need to test to be sure you are keeping it in line. You can see what your doctor suggests when you get retested. Im sorry to hear your husband has cancer. He is in my prayers. We must all choose our own path. Maybe with you eating healthier it will influence him! Trish,im looking forward to hearing how your cataract surgery goes. Im surprised you are having them so close together but things have probably changed since I heard about it. I pray it goes well. The scale is up one lb to 180 so I guess that is my new starting point. In the next few days I will be eating higher carb to get rid of some of the food we have on hand. Social Security comes on Wednesday and I can buy more meat. I just hope I can keep my weight from going even higher. I have not taken Lasix for a few days,so my fluid is up,but I see no obvious swelling. The last time I took a half I peed my pants 3 times in one day! I can't continue that way! I'd like to only take it when I see swelling. Problem is, the. fluid retention that gave me a problem was around my heart and lungs,so not visible. But if it accumulates in my feet/ankles that's a sign that its accumulating elsewhere. I don't want to go back to the hospital, but if I do,I won't have to go to the casino! 😁😄. I forgot about Sugar Free Jello. I used to make it but got away from it. I like it with sugar free RediWhip! I bought some Quest Chocolate Protein shakes. I have been using Pure Protein and like them but the Quest had a $1 off coupon attached so I tried it. Its almost the same as Pure Protein so I'll stick with Pure because they are cheaper. I have 2 Premier Protein that expired so I'm afraid to drink them. I can't remember if I ever tried Wal-Mart's brand. But in the hot weather its a nice treat, like a milk shake, plus nutritionally beneficial. Our temperatures are supposed to go back to normal next week. That will be wonderful! They have been warning the elderly to stay out of the heat but DH likes to be outside. Have you been walking to the mailbox? Our mail comes to the end of the driveway. |
Welcome Millie. I agree with Carol Sue. I would get a meter and start tracking your blood sugar now. We've learned to take control of our diabetes ourselves as we work with our doctor as well. Sorry to hear your DH has cancer and is still eating the junk foods etc. I did the same thing in the beginning of my cancer treatment because they don't help us learn to eat differently. The 1st thing they told me was "this isn't your fault; you didn't cause this" and the big lie was "sugar doesn't feed cancer". So I ate whatever I wanted during the worse part of my chemo therapy and the side effects were horrible. I've since have done my own research and learned that cancer loves sugar and carbohydrates. So I am learning to eat VLC woe. Right now I am off treatment because the side effect of my chemo medicine is damaging kidneys. They hope that my bp medicine Lisinopril will heal and protect my kidneys so I can go back on the medication. It is my hope that if I can make Very Low Carb/Keto Diet a habit that my body will be ready to accept and work with that chemo medicine so I can become cancer free or as they call it in remission.
I have learned to control my diabetes with diet and exercise and my A1c has been around 5.2 during the cancer journey but I hope to get it back into the 4s where it was before I got the cancer diagnosis. If you have the time and enjoy doing it, do your own research on your health situation and learn what diet plan etc fits your lifestyle. Weight down to 155.6 lbs giving me a 3.6 lb loss this week although they are recycle loss. A loss is a loss. FBG was 102 and Ketones has moved up to 1.2. BP is very good at 111/69. Thankful my numbers are so much better. Carol Sue Everyone I know who has had cataract surgery from my Daddy, DH and DS and DBIL had one eye done one week and had the second eye done exactly one week after. I guess because of the holiday, my right eye surgery is 2 days before 4th of July on Tuesday the 2nd and my left eye surgery will be done on Thursday the 11th instead of Tuesday 9th like theirs were done. I'm having to take 2 Lasix today. I think because my legs were down for most of yesterday plus I didn't get to exercise them yesterday. I will do some of them today. I haven't started walking to the mailbox yet. I am going to wait until after I get the eye surgeries done and over with. Calorie plan for today is 1049 and 18 carbs. Have a great day eveeyone. |
Trish,I know my MIL had one cataract done but don't know if she did the other eye. She didn't drive. Her sister drove, but after she got the first eye done she could see well enough to drive so she never had the second one done. I also don't remember what my high school friend did. Maybe nobody I knew needed both done. Some of my neighbors had it done and also DHs brother. But he has since passed away. Several years ago I was told I had one starting in the left eye but none in the right. It might be there now.
Its probably good to wait til your eyes are healed to walk to the mailbox. Will you take your walker? It might be best for that distance. Im getting hungry but DH wants a home made hamburger and needs to go to buy the ground meat and buns. He better get moving! |
Carol Sue The father of the eye doctor who did DH cataract surgery was my eye doctor. He told me that I might never have to have cataract surgery. My oncologist told me that all that chemo I had in the beginning probably caused me to have to have the surgery. Strange thing is I remember when I told him I had that mild stroke that he said to me "Oh we probably did that to you too". I just hope I don't have any other bad side effects.
Yes, I will use the walker when I start walking to the mailbox. Some of my problem right now with walking it is that I am cool in my house dresses and I am too lazy to dress in a shirt and pants to walk it and the fact that it is so hot right now, it is so easy to just stay in the house. DH couldn't believe how big that roasted chicken was that he bought yesterday. We still have another meal left of it, but I don't want it 3 days in row so I told him to bag it and put in the freezer. I had him get some beef ribs and I think I will try my hand cooking them tomorrow and see if I like them or not. I definitely enjoy the pork ones but want to try these. If I like them we can swap them out. I have the G. Hughes SF BBQ and we use it for flavor. I like to take ground beef and make bunless double cheese burgers and add it to veggies as a CB salad. Since I can no longer can have fries. I add pork skins to it and add mayo and mustard to it and it is as good as a CB. |
Trish,I love beef ribs but never cooked them because DH wouldn't eat them. He does not eat any meat with a bone. They used to have them on the buffet at the WV casino. I really miss that buffet, but we would never go that far again. Its 1 1/2 hour drive each way, and a long ride on the interstate coming home after dark. But that buffet was delicious! I got so much protein when we went there. Anyway, I think I like beef ribs better than pork ribs. One time when I was making soup I asked another customer in the store what meat I should buy for vegetable soup. She told me to get beef short ribs and cook them in the pressure cooker to get them tender before putting them in the soup, and include the broth from cooking them. I bought boneless short ribs and even DH ate them. I think if I bought them again and cooked them in the pressure cooker, DH would eat them because the pressure cooker gets them really soft.
When our local grocery store changed ownership they had really big rotisserie chickens, but now they are using the smaller ones like everyone else. I love rotisserie chicken and would buy one every week if I was alone. DH just tolerates chicken. He only eats breast. Before I met him I only ate poultry and seafood. No beef or pork. I always heard it was bad for you. He would not eat poultry except for Thanksgiving and only deep fried fish. My diet changed dramatically when I met him. Too bad I didn't change him to eat more like me. We might not have ended up having our heart surgery. I have never had CB salad but I used to eat pizza salad. I would just used the cheese and toppings from the pizza and chop them up into a bed of lettuce. It tasted like pizza but avoided the carby crust. I don't do that any more, sadly. I need to change my evil ways. I'm not sure what causes a cataract but I will look it up. I like to do that. This morning I read some good articles on MFP. Theres a lot on there besides tracking your food. One article explained about some foods that increase GLP1 in the body and can help with weight loss. Foods like eggs, lean protein,Greek yogurt, etc. ETC. Exercise also increase GLP1. There's a reason why we're told to eat certain foods and exercise. The other article was about why you should not eat before bed. Thats another thing I never did before I met DH. He has been a bad influence on me. My step children eat dinner very late, after 7pm. Step daughter is always complaining about her weight but eats dinner at 7-8 and goes to bed at 9. I could probably never convince her to change. I think its what her DH wants. But he is thin. He's not as thin as he used to be but thin for A guy. I still love DH in spite of his bad habits. I have some bad habits he doesn't like too. Too bad we can't n be just how we want each other to be.! |
Weight is fluctuating, but that isn't a problem as I've learned that seems to be a good thing for me. My other numbers are good but I really want my FBG under 100 and hopefully that will happen soon. Ketones were less than less that 1 but still in ketosis though low. I finished eating a processed link sausage I had getting it out of the house. In fact, I feel like I am beginning to settle into a 20 gram or less total low carb woe. Carbs planned today are 13 grams. I'm not sure I could or would ever eat carnivore. For one thing I enjoy my coffee and I just don't want to give it up. If I could drink black coffee like some carnivore doctors do, I might could do a clean carnivore, but I feel like I have already given up so much of what I like. Of course, I guess that could change but not at this time. I'm still reading Dr. Tan's books research and when I see something that I think may help me, I do adjust. I'm still learning.
When I was a young, I grew up on chickens that were 3.5 to 4 lbs. My Daddy grew up on a farm and when DH #2 and I bought and moved on the farm, we learned that Daddy's grandmother would not raise anything but Rhode Island Reds because they were big chickens. One time I was at a girlfriends house and was invited to eat dinner with her family. I went home and told my Daddy how little their chicken was. I was young and had no knowledge of chickens. Daddy told me they had leghorns which were raised as egg layers. I always bought big chickens because I remembered my aunt going into the store and telling the butcher she wanted a chicken as close to 4 lbs as he had. Now you just get what you can get and I seldom buy a whole chicken as it is easier to get a frozen bag of breasts or tenders and DH prefers it. When my grandkids lived with DH#2 and us, I bought leg quarters because 10 lb bags were cheaper. I raised a bunch of chickens one time that was raised for big breasts and refused to ever raise them again. Those poor chickens were bow legged because they were so huge. I told DH#2, that is cruel to raise a chicken so big it can't hardly walk. Of course, now they probably raise them in a cage where they have no room to move anyway. DH gets frozen chicken breasts that are big enough that we cut one in half and eat it. I'm sure they come from those type of chickens. Carol Sue I've always taken bunless CB and turned it into a salad. I never thought about doing that with the pizza toppings. I think DH is wanting a pizza and I knew I could eat the toppings but never thought about putting it on a salad. Thanks for the idea. I found an Keto Air-fryer recipe group on FB and they had cut what looked like CS pork ribs and cut them in bite sizes to eat like a dip. I'm plan to try those sometime soon. Have a good day. |
Thanks for your input Carol and Trish. I will get a monitor on the 1st of July. Funds are tight right now. I'm re-reading the Dr. A's Habits of Health not planning on getting back on Optivia but need to incorporate healthy habits into my life. Today is my granddaughter's birthday party so will be eating unhealthy for that meal. Down another 1/2 pound so going the right way.
|
Millie I hope you enjoyed your granddaughter's birthday. I don't think it hurts to have an off meal or day. Many people do them. Not sure if I will do that but then my battle right now is cancer instead of weight or diabetes.
The ribs I had were called finger ribs. They were very tough and I have decided that I would rather have a beef steak or roast so we won't be buying those things anymore. We ate what we could off of the ones I had although DH told me to just throw them out, but as you know Carol Sue, I can't do that. I had between 1200 and 1300 calories and only 9 total carbs. So it was almost carnivore, probably the closest I will ever eat to it. I did an 8 hr eating window and won't eat again until 11 am tomorrow. |
Trish, I dont know if its like this everywhere but we can buy frying chickens or roasting chickens. Fryers are much smaller. When I buy a whole chicken I tend to look for the smallest fryer. I like to roast them whole, similar to a rotisserie chicken or beer can chicken. My MIL used to make chicken noodle soup every Sunday and she always bought a whole chicken and cut it up herself instead of buying parts. I buy hindquarters and drumsticks to cook for the dog but DH will only eat white meat. I buy frozen tenderloins instead of breasts because they are smaller and cook faster. He is always in a hurry to eat,and is often standing in the kitchen with a plate and fork waiting for the food to be done. Its actually laughable! He doesn't believe in letting the meat rest. He is best eating a meal that cooks in 10 minutes. If I cook something in a slow cooker he is asking "When is this going to be done?" all day. I always tell him 4:00 no matter what. Also, if he hears a timer go off he assumes dinner is ready. When we are in a restaurant I ask him why he doesn't go back in the kitchen and make sure they cook his food right. He said he wishes he could, and I believe him. I could write a book. "Married To Jerry!"
I no longer eat burgers. I just don't like ground beef except in certain foods like stuffed cabbage rolls or meat loaf. DH likes burgers but always wants them made with freshly ground beef, never frozen. I keep some frozen for in other foods like chili or pasta, sauce. Millie, I looked up Dr A and Octavia as I am not familiar with them. Did you do Optavia? How did you like it? I have never done a plan that provides the food. It may be ok if I was alone. I have mostly dieted using regular food and regulating portions myself. Sometimes I'm successful and sometimes not. I have never gone back to my starting weight of 217 but I'm rarely successful with maintain my losses long term. I am a food addict I think. II used to be a compulsive overeater. That was horrible, and that's how I gained in the first place.I just wish I could get into a steady downward trend instead of this up down up down cycle. I just keep trying. |
I have an appointment with the PCP this week. I was going to go for my bloodwork this morning but I didn't sleep and I'm so tired so I will go tomorrow. DH didn't feel well overnight Everything hurt him, his wrist, his back and his leg. He had us both up all night. I finally fell asleep around 6 am. I will go to the hospitals lab so the doctor gets the results faster. I have a small copay if I go there but no copay at Quest. I know my A1c is going to be bad but thats because of the fluid pill. Trish, its strange to me that it raises my blood sugar but not yours. Maybe its something else raising it.
We have 2 more days til Social Security. And I have $3. I don't know how much DH has but I know it's not much There's $15 in the bank. We have never been this low. Im going to start a go-fund-me! . The cars are gassed up but we just can't eat out anywhere unless we charge it, which we don't usually do. So I have to get my chefs hat on. I have food to cook, but its not what DH wants. 🎶 We will survive!🎵 |
Carol Sue Sorry you had a rough night sleeping and your DH had aches etc. Hope y'all have a better day today and you can rest tonight. I never thought about the Lasix causing my bs to go up. I have wondered why it seems to be higher even though I'm eating low carb/keto. I'm keeping my carbs under 20 g now and instead of the bs being in the 90s as it usually is, it has been in hundreds. It was 107 yesterday and 109 today. Maybe I need the carbs to be up a little. I have to really work at having them under 20 g. I keep hoping today will be the day I won't be hungry. I did stay within 16 hr of fasting so that is good and hoping to work toward 20 hr fasting. I really want to be able to at least fast 24 hrs before infusion and maybe 12 hrs after when they start up again.
Weight back down to 155 lbs this morning. I took 2 Lasix yesterday but will only take 1 today. I don't have to take them more than once a day and doing keto, I don't take it if I don't need it. Calories today will be below 1200 calories and total carbs 15 g. I'm tired a lot right now and I think that is because the carbs are so low. I will try to at least finish out doing this the rest of this week and maybe up my carbs back up to 30 g the way the Eades teach. Don't feel up to doing all the exercises today but will make myself do a lot of them. Millie I hope things are going well for you. Fatmad We would love to hear how you are doing? I pray all went well with your knee. Have a great day everybody. |
