Mad, I don't expect my rash to get worse, since our tomato season is just about over. They sure were good, though, and I will probably do the same thing next year!
Trish, I know of many people who lose weight without fasting at all. It is not necessary for weight loss. It depends on how much you are eating in total. I can easily eat enough to prevent weight loss, even when fasting. My friend who lost all that weight did not fast. She cut back on carbs, but I think she ate very small meals, very low calorie. Low calorie still works for some. I enjoy fasting. I like the feeling of the empty stomach. But apparently I also like the feeling of the full stomach. LOL I just hope I am getting some type of benefits from the daily fasting periods. They are becoming a way of life. There are probably a few days here and there when I get 12-14 hours, but most are at least 16. I think I might get my chili made today, finally. I had a good, low carb breakfast buffet. No pancakes, toast, french toast, waffles, muffins, biscuits, potatoes. Lots of scrambled eggs and bacon, a scoop of corned beef hash, and 2 grapefruit sections. Very satisfying. We went to Walmart and bought eggs, bacon, pickles, bread, milk, bottled water and Clorox. No snack food or baked goods. |
Carol Sue I was just reading about the SCD part of this book and it talks about getting 14 hr fasts will work just as well. I think I will just aim at eating healthy, lower calorie,, slow carb and have mostly a 14 hr fast. That is mainly because I like to go 5 hrs between meals and this way I can do that with a 10 hr eating window and a 14 hr fast. I personally think that will fit me better. It is worth a try any way. I will keep up with all the info plus exercising on MFP. Their counts aren't exact but they are close enough.
I called the place where DS goes and gets the shot to help her lose weight and they don't go through insurance or Medicare. First visit is $65 for consultation and shot and then $15 per shot usually one a week. DS says there is no meds just the shot which is B12 plus some type of sulfur drug not sure what all is in the shot. I am going to talk to DH about it. Right now I plan to do the diet plan I am doing plus I'm taking a liquid sublingual B12 and if it works, I won't need to go for the shot. FBG was 117. After 21 minutes of bike and before breakfast it was 118. I had a home cooked egg mcmuffin on Light Multi-grain English Muffin made with 1 egg and 1 slice of Canadian bacon and a little bit of shredded cheese and my coffee. 2hrs after eating bs was 142 and 3 hrs after it was 121 so the 5 hr in between gives time for everything to get back down to normal. I read in the book that you should have a cup of coffee before exercise and have protein after exercise. That explains to me why Dr. Whittaker recommends taking the berberine with a cup of coffee before exercising and then he says wait as long after exercise as you can and then eat your breakfast. That worked for me before so I will go back to doing that. I feel good about this plan and hope it will work so I don't have to spend the money for the shot. The key will be having the B12 liquid vitamin working because that is the main reason I would pay for it. |
Trish are you going to do 3 meals a day? I do 2, late breakfast and early dinner. 10-4 or so. Not set in stone. It would be good if the shots would help.you. That is not a lot of money. Just be sure what is in it.
|
I ended up doing 8 hr eating window. I guess I'm just use to that now... may be a habit now which is good. I did 2 meals and a snack, but all that is flexible according to whether I am hungry or not.
|
I got the paper back book of The Hybrid Diet and I understand a little better of what the SCD is although it is kind of difficult to know where to get some of the food in his recipes, but I can figure out how to make it work with our foods.
I really want to get the benefits of autophagy so I think I will drink water in the mornings long enough to be in the autophagy stage before drinking my coffee and eating. I really think being in that stage for even an hour or two is better than not being in it at all. I read you have to fast 12 hrs to even get into autophagy. So will tweak my plan to make that happen. Edited to add: MFP was down for a while so I was just now able to track on there all that I ate today. I am happy to say that calories were under 1300 although carbs were not as low as I would have liked but not bad for having chipped beef for lunch today. |
Trish, I'm glad you were able to stay in the 8 hour window and I don't think it would be a big deal if you went over sometimes. Because you would probably be under sometimes, too. That's how it works for me. I went over and over about coffee and everything I read online says that black coffee contributes to autophagy so I'm glad I went back to drinking it black. I love my early mornings with my coffee. I did not stick to my window yesterday. I get disappointed with myself when I do that. DH eats things and then leaves the extra sit out. This time it was watermelon. It wasn't BAD food but it was food beyond my window and I wasn't hungry. I need to fight that demon. DH is not going to change so I have to.
I hope you figure out where to get some of the foods you need or maybe learn what you can substitute. It does sound interesting. I like reading the information you have shared.. No potty issues the past couple days. No tomatoes either. Almost gone. |
Carol Sue I know I ride that roller coaster too of doing what I call being good and then getting disappointed in myself because I don't do what I should. I think I am my worst enemy. It would be so easy to call and make an appointment to go for an appointment with that place DS goes and get the shots, but I want so badly to prove I can do this myself. One thing that keeps me from doing it is that it is so far over to the clinic from here for me to have to drive as it isn't far from where DS lives.
I'm in a funky mood today for some reason. I would have almost rather have stayed in bed. I'm in one of those moods where I am going to have to make myself be good today because I'm having one of those "why bother" attitudes, but I know that I cannot let that get too me. Wish I had read your post before I started drinking my coffee. I guess I'm going to have to learn to drink it black, but will have to start that tomorrow since I've already got this cup half drank. I did get a couple of hours in autophagy before I started drinking it though so that is good. FBG is 121 this morning and weight is back to 215.8 if it stays. It does fluctuate a lot. The important thing is what it will be on WI day. I'm getting tired of salads right now and that might not be good. I think I will consider making a vegetable soup to eat in place of it. I can't allow myself to get into a slump right now as that would only make me go backwards. As for the book, it talks about something cold oatcakes which I've never seen but I looked it up online and it is made with oatmeal. The fiber causes the carbs to be less and I'm considering making them to eat with salads or soups. The book says you can even eat eggs on them so they are some sort of bread like food the must eat in the UK. There are several ways to make them and I saw a really easy recipe I want to go back and copy to make them. I have a Diabetic book I used years ago in SC that said the key to controlling blood sugar was fiber. It had you eat a lot more food than I would eat even back then and I was into Atkins, but I think I will get it out and use some of their ideas along with this book. WW had a diet years ago that was a plan that was similar and I did really great on it because it had a slider that pts were figured according to fiber. I did great on that diet and then they came out with a new plan. I think the key to the SCD is using complex carbs instead of simple. It is a good plan. Got to make myself get on that bike today so I need to go that since I'm almost through with my coffee. This is going to be a "Make myself do what is right" day. Have a great day everybody. |
Trish I have a swig of cream with my meds, and a little in my morning tea, even when fasting, or I cannot manage the meds. Dr. Fung says small amounts of almost pure fat, (avocado or cream) is ok to take with meds etc. and some do BPC while fasting.
But shakes are not fasting. If you have a shake you are going to release insulin, and gain weight. Today has been good, I took the dog for a walk early, and had a music lesson and housework since then. In and outside all day since it is SUCH great weather, sunny and warm, but not hot. Its supposed to continue into Sunday. Cool nights and beautiful, sunny warm days sounds like early fall joy to me. Not eating today, all set for the night with sparkling water. have a good evening |
The day has turned out fine so far today even did my 20 minutes on the bike. Amazing thing is that while looking for diabetic book I have that I got from Prevention years ago because it talks a lot about the importance of fiber when it comes to controlling blood sugar, I found 2 other books I didn't know I had on GL dieting. Low and behold one of them tites Low GL Diet is written by Dr. Holford who co-authored The Hybrid Diet.
FBG this morning before coffee was 121 and then before breakfast and after exercise it was 120. Following his rule of eating protein after exercise, I had a slice of toast with peanut butter along with 1/2 sm banana. 2 hrs later bs was still 120. By the time we had lunch, my bs reading was 98. I really think this just might be the right eating plan for me. I decided to cut up the pork steak I had cooked for lunch and put it in a serving of lentil soup. I look forward to seeing how my bs reads 2 to 3 hrs later. Carol Sue He says in this book that if you get control of your bs that you will start losing weight. He also says to always eat low GL carbs with protein and fat. I noticed the thing that has changed in the new book The Hybrid Deit from the Low GL Diet book is the fat. The older book was more like avoid saturated fats like butter etc, but in the THD, he encourages eating butter etc. He also recommends 15 minutes of exercise a at least 3 days a week. If this really works, I can eat this way for the rest of my life. |
Trish, sounds like something doable for you, of course the test is whether the weight maintains at least or you lose some. I always found I craved more carbs with eating carbs, but toast is so yummy. hope that works.
150 this am. I am dog sitting and last night was the first sleep over. Took the dog a long time to settle, and I am glad my bed is high, she tried to get in with me several times. I had her crate downstairs and a blanket on our bedroom floor but it took a while for her to finally settle to sleep. She is sleeping on the couch next to me now since I got up. I think she is exhausted from the stress of change, she is very cuddly now. Hope she does ok when I leave later today. I will have a neighbour come to check on her and let her out for a pee while I am working. Hope everyone has a good day, its going to be lovely here later. |
FBG 103. Trish I am keeping blood sugar in control with G still, so I don't know if that counts for weight loss. Probably not. I am averaging 1 mg twice a day. I could go lower if I cut carbs lower. That will be hard to do since I have lost interest in meat. I cooked chicken last night but had to force 1 piece and the dog will get the rest. I finally tried the wheat bread I bought and it was delicious, so much for not liking it. I love toast with lots of butter. A big downfall of mine..
Trish I love vegetable soup. DH likes it but only eats a small amount and still wants a regular dinner. Soup is not dinner for him. Mad we have never allowed our dogs in our bed. some were not even allowed in the bedroom. I was always afraid if they happened to get fleas we would get them in our bed. Only the past couple dogs were allowed on the couch. Before we got air conditioning our dog preferred to be in the basement where it was cooler and had a tile/cement floor. Rusty sleeps under our bed. That scares me. If the bed ever collapsed he would be a goner. Pupper did that too. Our next door neighbor came home with a new baby yesterday so today I'm off to buy a gift. We are getting some younger neighbors. If they stay, the neighborhood will be changing. Another house sold so we will be getting another new neighbor. |
I ate breakfast at 9 this am, so I have 8 hours to close my eating window at 5. Rarely do I eat past 3-4 so I should be under my 8 hour window. I hope to skip lunch to keep my calories lower for the day. This is normally casino day and we have buffet coupons, but no plans yet. Anyone want to wager? LOL

Well ladies, I believe I have finally found the way to eat for me SCD. This morning FBG 119 and weight 214.8. I did an 8:16 IF ratio and my FBG I ate 2 meals and a snack. All of them were fairly small M/S. Yesterday FBG was 121 then before breakfast it was 120. 2 hrs later it was still 120 Checked it again before 2nd meal and it was 98. I forgot to check 2 hrs later but about an 2 1/2 hrs later it was only 127. When I got ready to have the snack 4 hrs later it was 105. I checked 4 hrs after snack and it was 110.
This is exactly how this plan is supposed to work as it is suppose to keep the glucose even. I was never hungry all day long. I am very pleased with this. I will try to keep at least 4 days of 20 minutes on the bike although he only says you need to do a minimum of 3 days of 15 minutes plus I also include the time I spend on Monday and Fridays walking in the store as part of my weekly exercise routine too. However, he does recommend some other exercises I may look into and do those on alternate days. Man I have looked for what would work for me for a good 50+ years so I am really excited about this. Carol Sue You aren't caring for meat right now, have you thought of adding quinoa to your plan or do you not like it? I just learned that it is not only high in fiber but it also is high protein and is you use it in place of rice. I just watched a YouTube thing on how to microwave it and I'm going to cook some today and have it like oatmeal for my breakfast later. This will be good for me because I need the fiber but not too much of it. Carol Sue DS doesn't like veggies so she make soup with veggies in it and she and BIL love it. However, you and I have always loved veggies and I think it would be great to have soup in place of all the salad I was always eating on CAD. I have to say that SCD is going to be quite a nice change from CAD. One of the nice things about this is that I get to eat the fruit that I like that is GL friendly. I bet you and hubby go to the casino. LOL Drinking black coffee with a little Stevia in it to keep it 0 calories to stay a little longer in autophagy. Dr. Holford recommends using Xylitol to keep the bs level. I have some but quite expensive to use. I'll have to see if there is a better way to buy it. as I don't like using little packets. I was so thrilled when Stevia came out in bags rather than just packets. Pus I just got DH using Stevia instead of sugar and don't know if he would change to anything else. I guess I need to hit Drug Emporium soon. Dr. Holbrook recommends some supplements but one of them he recommends I had just hear about but wasn't sure about it. Glucomannan which I thought was supposed to block carbs, but maybe I'm wrong. I'll have to read up on that more. I just hate buying another supplement. I'll check it out next time I go to Drug Emporium as I can't find it at Walmart. I have seen it there but it wasn't there when I went to get my flu shot. I guess I finally have an eating plan is a combo of Slow Carb Diet and Intermittent Fasting as I want the benefits of I. However, I only plan to do the ratio of 8:16 at least at this time. He recommends 3 meals and 3 snacks, but that just isn't me and as long as I lose weight and my blood sugar stays down and pretty level, that is all I care about as it means I'm getting healthier. That has always been my goal and I won't have to go get shots as this will be a lifestyle not a diet. fatmad Hope you dog sitting goes well. I know you like walking the dog to help get your exercise done. Have a great day everybody. |
Trish, I have quinoa but I don't make it because DH won't eat it. If I make it for myself I am just adding food/calories, and I think I already eat more than enough. I feel I get plenty of protein from the eggs I eat and the bacon when I have it. I'm not worried about getting enough protein. I do eat meat when I prepare it, just not as much as I used to, and don't enjoy it as much. I do enjoy some, just not most. I always used to cook extra chicken when I prepared it because I liked having it on hand for a snack or lunch. I think I would still like it baked/roasted, but not the way I prepared it yesterday. The only thing I don't think I'm getting enough of is vegetables, and I can fix that. I do want to make some steel cut oats one of these days. I hardly ever make it, but I do like it.
I heard of Glucomannan. I was reading about it. It swells up in your stomach and makes you eat less, and turns into a gel that moves food through your body without being absorbed. It is recommended. You can order it from Walmart.com and have it delivered free. It's inexpensive. I order a lot of things from them. Amazon probably has it, too. You win the bet! LOL We are going to the casino! LOL He is getting bothered about me not gambling. But I told him he had the right to do what he wants with his money and I have the right to do what I want with mine. He should be glad I still go. |
Carol Sue I figured he would decide to go. LOL I understand about making the extra food you don't need. Eating more veggies are important too. Hope you figure things out.
I made a batch of quinoa. I went on line and learned how to make it in the microwave. I didn't think it would bulk up but it came out beautiful. I intended to eat it the way I eat my oatmeal, but after I mixed a little butter in it and tasted it, it tasted so good by itself that I just ate a serving of it and had a cup of coffee with it. Didn't even have any fruit. I saw a guy on YouTube making it so he could make a salad with it like potato salad so I think I will do that sometime this week. I'm cooking tilapia for lunch today and I guess I will have a salad and okra with it. I also need to eat more veggies than I have been. I had planned to have yogurt for snack tonight like I had last night, but I saw some snacks in the book with vegetable that looks good too so may try some of those. |
