150 today, after feasting but staying LCHF yesterday. So am on plan. Not sure about my next fast. I have a headache this morning, waiting to see if it will go away with tea, but if not, I usually find eating helps. It may be best to eat today and fast tomorrow, just for my body to have a break from fasting. No major plans either way.
Slept well last night too. I also attribute success this week to having no constipation. Things go well if I go well, LOL. Not sure what I am doing right this week, or why I periodically have that problem. I have not been eating much cheese though this week. I had some with ham earlier in the week, and had parmesan on my "caesar" salad.
But not a lot otherwise. So maybe the cheese is the issue. Not just dairy by itself, as I had high fat yogurt yesterday.
I used to like to mix my yogurt with granola, to give it texture and flavour etc.
So I made up a nut and seed mix, with chia and sunflower seeds, then hemp hearts and almonds and pecan pieces, and put a few tablespoons of that in with the yogurt. Quite wonderful. The yogurt is a 9% fat, so with the nuts and yogurt, I get lots of fat, and the chia gives my lots of fibre. I could have that frequently.

Have a good day and weekend everyone.
Hope you all have good weather

Unbelievable how far you have come Mad in such a short time! Amazing .I can understand how happy you are about your success.

My fasting blood sugar is finally down to 101 this AM at 9. I think getting a good night's sleep helped. I woke up around 4 and took Tylenol which helped me go back to sleep. I don't like using anything for sleep but it's worth it to feel this good. Now I have to remind myself of how much better I feel when I eat lightly.

I bought some whole milk yogurt to help my gut bacteria. Been hearing a lot about that. There are 2 different brands I like so it depends which store I'm in.

I hope to get some cleaning done today since I feel better.

Have a good Saturday.

I just found another discrepancy in the Obesity Code book. I have been reading IDM for several years. Anyone who has been following Dr Fung should remember the story of the coal truck delivering coal to the house. Eventually the coal is not being burned and there's no room in the house for more coal. The truck continues to deliver it and it ends up piled up outside. This is how he explained that when the cells got filled up with glucose, they became insulin resistant. The insulin would try to push more glucose out of the blood into the cells but the receptors would not open. The body would continue to produce more and more insulin until the glucose got pushed into the cells. Since there was too much, it was sent to the fat cells and stored as fat. This makes sense to me and it's what I've believed to be true. He said that the way to get rid of the excess glucose is to stop taking it in, or burn it.

Now I read in Obesity Code that if you are Insulin Resistant, your cells run out of glucose because the insulin fails to open the receptors and let the glucose into the cells. So the body produces more and more insulin until the receptors open up. I don't know if someone else took part in writing this book, but this doesn't sound like Dr Fung's teachings at all. I don't know what to believe anymore, but the first scenerio makes more sense to me.

pattygirl63 02-16-2019 02:55 PM

Carol Sue I would go with the first theory of the coal truck delivery as that is what I have heard Dr. Fung say on YouTube. I have the book, but I didn't retain as much from it as I do from his lectures on YouTube. I don't know what to think of the difference, but the book the coal theory makes so much more sense since.

I hope you are able to get things straightened out with the hospital etc of DH bills. I know when we first moved here and we were with another system here in town that they liked to have never got DH's bill straightened for when he was on Coumadin. He was constantly calling someone and even went to the hospital billing office to get it straight. Medicare was paying most of it, but we were having to pay all of it. They finally got it straightened out after we left and went with the other hospital system here and we did get a check for the money Medicare had payed. Took us months. So far we have no problems with the system we are in.

fatmad You are doing great. You are so good at encouraging us and your journey is a big help to me. I'm sure you will be in the 140s very soon.

DH made himself a ACV cocktail using some red wine in it. I fussed at him not to do that. However, this morning I went on Dr. Fung's and Dr. DiNicolantonio's FB Longevity Solution group and Dr. DiNicolantonio says it contain a bioavailable form of resveratoral that can activate autophagy in SIRT-1. DH will be glad to hear that. Dr. DiNicolantonio also has a book titled The Salt Fix. I didn't order the book, but Amazon did have a kindle Summary & Analysis book of it so I'm reading it. I am finding more and more the things we have been made to believe is bad for us just so the companies can keep us sold on eating more and more sugar and simple carbs. It is disgusting. Everything he says makes me understand what happened to my DH#2 who died with CHF because they took his sodium from him. It also tells me why I have had low sodium test results over the years and get dehydrated. If fits all the things I had a cardiology nurse told me about the heart patients who came into the hospital with low sodium and how we need to eat it. It also tells me why DH cardiologist prescribed for him to eat more salt and he has never had the blood problems or the heart palpitations since then.

Y'all have a great day and weekend.

Wannabehealthy 02-16-2019 05:47 PM

Trish DH went to the same hospital as I did and has the same insurance as I do and I just got a bill for my copay. His is all screwed up.

I keep forgetting to buy a new bottle of ACV

fatmad 02-16-2019 09:47 PM

Carol: thanks for pointing out that conflicting info in the obesity book, what chapter is that? I will read mine and see about it.
I wonder if they were written at different times and that his thinking evolved over time.
Will check it out and see what I think too.

Managing to make it through another fast today, because DD is coming home for supper tomorrow, so i will make some yummy pot roast for us. SO tomorrow will be a feasting day.

fatmad 02-17-2019 08:06 AM

149 again this am after fasting yesterday. Would like to get a little lower into the 140s soon. Today will be an eating day, going out to work for a couple of hours and then will come home for brunch and putting the pot roast together. Looking forward to seeing DD as well.
Have a lovely Sunday friends

FBG 125 this morning. I think that is a new low for me. Weight was 217.8 making a 3.4 lb loss for this week. So that is great for my FBG and weight to be down together. A rare thing for me. One week without BP meds my bp reading was 105/64. Of course, remember I was given bp meds as a preventive med not because I ever had high bp.

DH and I watch Dr. DiNicolantonio on YouTuve in an interview with Dr. Berry about salt. I am going to order Real Salt from Amazon today. It is the best salt to use and has a lot of the minerals etc needed. They explained why it was better than Himalayan pink salt. Also watched Dr. Berry on vitamins and he tells talks about some that you need to take. I'm hearing a lot about Vitamin K-2 which they say works with D3 to improve our bones and can even reverse or improve osteoporosis. With me trying to build up my bone density, I am going to order some today. He says to take up to 5000 mg of D3. I know I saw Dr. Berg say that he takes K2+ D3+ every morning. He said they are beginning to tell young people in their 20s to take these 2 vitamins to have healthy bones and keep from ever having osteoporosis.

Dr. Berry says we need to take magnesium. Can't remember all the others. I also heard from several of the Drs that we don't need to take calcium. It can cause calcification of arteries and also harden some muscles. I had read years ago that we shouldn't take it because you can get too much and cause heart problems. At that time I had taken it out of our vitamin regiment. So I've taken it out again. CQ 10 is important to take and 200 mg is enough for each day unless you are on statins and a lot of others meds then it won't hurt to take up to 800 mg a day. Omega 3 from fish oil is also important to take. Sorry, I can't remember if there was anything else. I need to look it up and write down what he suggests.

I'm going to tell you we all need to hear Dr. DiNicolantonio on salt. I can understand why my Mama had circulation problems, and why DH#2 died when they cut his sodium down to almost nothing. It also shows me how to keep from going down the same road Daddy and his family walked down. I don't have to have strokes or heart problems and it can be prevented without dangerous meds. I feel blessed to be learning what I am.

Got a call last night from DS that our nephew called her to tell her that Daddy had called him and was totally confused. She called and talk to the nurse and she was in the room with him. He asked DS when he moved into this red building and how long had he been there and why. I called the nurses station and the day nurse knew nothing about the incident which I am very upset about. Why would you not report that to the on coming nurse? She said he was up and had eat breakfast and been out about the facility and gone back to his room. We wondered all night if he was having another stroke or perhaps he has a kidney infection again. He has been drinking a lot of diet coke again. DS is going out there to see how he is since I can't get him on the phone. He has tried to call me this morning whether accidently or trying to call, I don't know because I missed it. DS will call the office tomorrow and complain about the day shift nurse not being told there might be a health problem going on.

Carol Sue I thought about the fact that maybe Dr. Fung has changed his mind on some things since he wrote the book. Like I said, I watched him on YouTube. While he doesn't believe in telling people to cut back on calories with the calories in vs calories out theory, I think if I remember rightly he says on YouTube that that theory hasn't worked because people thing the more they exercise the more they can eat and that just doesn't work. The metabolic system will adjust to that way of eating and what happens is that you get to the place where the body will adjust to where you are exercising like crazy and you can't lose any weight and they don't know why it isn't working any more. This is why fasting helps stop that. Especially if you learn to use long fasting periods so that the body doesn't adjust to it. This is why he does not recommend eating just OMAD all the time because the body will adjust and you won't be able to lose. The why that when fatmad mixes up her eating and fasting periods her body doesn't adjust to one way of eating and she is so successful with losing weight.

fatmad You are my living example of not only how all this works but that it really does. You inspire me to keep on.

I am fasting until lunch again today. I will have lunch and then maybe a snack later. I did drink 3 ACV cocktails yesterday. One small one before I had anything in the morning. Then one made with Dr. Berg's recipe before lunch and before my evening snack. I have 1 BPC in the morning that gets me through until lunch and another one around 7 or 8 whenever DH decides to drink his to get him through the evening and night. This way I don't have the late night time snack cravings.

Have a blessed Sunday everyone.

Yay! for FBG 125, Trish!! It's coming down gradually, and that's what they say happens. Your post prandial readings have always been good but fasting takes the longest to come down. And weight down, too! You are on a roll, girl!

I think I figured out the discrepancy of DR Fung/Insulin Resistance. The book, Diabetes Code was published in Mar 2016, which means it was probably written a while before that. At that time, he spoke of what was believed about Insulin Resistance, that the cells were starving for glucose because it could not get from the blood into the cells. I don't know when after that time the beliefs changed, but here is a video he did in June 2016 where he explains the old thinking, and then tells of the new thinking, that the cells were overflowing with glucose and there wasn't any room for the insulin to push more into the cells.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS91ub_zUsk

So this has restored my faith in Dr Fung. :) I had been upset, thinking that he was contradicting himself. He was just stating what was believed at the time, and has since changed his thinking. One thing this shows me is that if you buy an older book, you might be getting older information, that could have changed by the time you are reading it.

Pipsicle 02-17-2019 05:51 PM

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm about a week behind in reading posts but wanted to pop in instead of using the little time I have to catch up. My goal for myself was to check in at least once a week but missed last week. Things are busy and then I got the flu on top of it all. Definitely on the mend but not 100%.

When I last posted I was really struggling with an unrelenting, ridiculously huge, appetite. It lasted another couple of days and I struggled through it. I think it may be a hormonal thing. I am doing ok now and may be able to post a loss next week. Scale was down today but I don't post until it is down two weeks in a row.

There were a few questions folks have asked and I answer the ones I remember. The type of oatmeal I have been eating is instant for now since I had an old box. Once it is gone, I will switch to higher quality oats. I have good insurance and am in an area with lots of doctor choices. I am hoping I can do enough to get some of my bad numbers in a good range so it doesn't end up on my medical record. My bigger problem is I have a general distrust/dislike of doctors bordering on a phobia. I have been to so many and have receive so few results. It feels like a waste of time and wild goose chase. I just don't want to waste the time/energy/money again. However, I'll have to go soon to get refills on my asthma meds. I have a new primary care doctor picked out. My last one was terrible. When I would go for a annual visit, they were generally confused that I was there for a wellness visit. Then when I asked about help with my weight to avoid the boat I am in now, she told me to go to Weight Watchers. Even though, I had literally just shared with her how poorly I felt on Weight Watchers (lethargic, intolerant of exercise, even passing out at times).

Dr. Fung offers a free 12 week fasting program on his website. I was thinking of signing up for it. My track record for sticking to any plan long term is abysmal so I'm not sure it will help me. I need to change something though. I want to do Pilates more so I've made an appointment with a new place. They use to be in the same building as my office but have moved. A bit disappointed in that and am beating myself up for not going to them sooner.

The other thing I have done is purchased several inexpensive rings that serve as reminders (like a string around the finger) to pay attention to my small daily goals. I feel like it is helping me. I realized I will probably have to wear 3 (out of 5) all day though because I can't measure the goal until the very end of the day. In my head, I was going to be able to take them off during the day as I met each goal. I clearly didn't think it through properly. In general, I don't like to wear jewelry so I really like getting to take them off.

That's all for today from this grumpy goat. Hope all have a good week.

pattygirl63 02-17-2019 05:57 PM

We hear so much about autophagy that I decided to see if I could find anyone talking about it on YouTube. Below is a link to see and hear Dr. Berg explain how it works that I thought I would share. Quite interesting.

Trish you should be thrilled with those numbers, I am very happy for you.
Carol: Did you remember where in diabetes code that info was? still curious and I should look it up. I found the two books quite similar so didn't read obesity very carefully, But I ordered Obesity for the office as well as Diabetes code so I want to know if there are major issues.

Pipsicle: I am glad that appetite thing is better. I wonder, did you try an ACV cocktail at all during that time? I add ACV to some foods, but don't have it regularly. I find if I stick to LCHF I don't have a huge appetite or overeat. Tonight we had the potroast and veggies, and I was having my after supper tea and a Keto chocolate/peanut butter cup dessert, and I could not finish that. Both DD and DH were surprised, because I had eaten less than either of them. But for a while, when I was always feeling hungry, I did take a tablespoon of ACV in water and did find that it seemed to reduce the amount I ate. I often have the problem that I take a long time to feel "full" and it seems I get that feeling sooner with the ACV cocktail. Although eating higher fat helps. It seems to happen mostly when I am carb crazy.

Tonight I also made borscht (beet soup). Beets are my fave veggie, but quite high carb so I don't eat them too often. I had a few roasted pieces with supper tonight but kept it to just a bit. I haven't eaten the soup except to taste it. My plan is to have it later in the week. I like it with cheese and crackers. (I use ACV for the vinegar in it, of course)
But I am thinking I have to be very careful there. Once I get on carbs, I can easily roll back the progress.

I was making the soup partly for my cousin. I don't know if I told you my cousin was recently diagnosed with uterine cancer, a uterine sarcoma, which is a cancer in the muscle of the womb. She is just a few months older that me and we grew up very close friends. She is a lovely person, a good daughter, a terrific mama, and a valued teacher in her community. This particular cancer does not have a great prognosis. She had a hysterectomy last Wednesday and is recovering now, so I wanted to take something nutritious to her and have a short visit. I always think homemade food made with love is very healing.
Her daughter says the surgery went well and nothing unexpected was found, which sound like the best news. I expect we will hear more soon.

DD is here and we are enjoying a visit, and tomorrow DH wants to go skiing and stay overnight near the hill, so I think I will go see my cousin on Wednesday. She told me she is not ready for visitors tomorrow. She is an hour or so away, and I know I won't stay long when I go. I may just do some shopping in her area, there is an Ikea there, and not one in my town.

Have a good evening friends. Tomorrow is a holiday here.

Mad I will try to find that section of the book. I find it hard to find things in Kindle books. Plus when I opened the book yesterday somehow it didn't stay on the page I had been on but went back to the beginning so I will have to figure out where I was and then page back.

EDIT: I found it. It is in Section 3 Chapter 10 Insulin Resistance. I am not as far into the book as I thought I was.

Pipsicle I'm glad to hear that your appetite is settled down and more in control. The rings are a good idea. Anything that reminds you of your goals.

I understand how you feel about doctors. Not many seem to be able to help with weight loss. It seems they only know to prescribe medicine. I have been with the same PCP for 25 years. I noticed a change in him when he moved from private practice to join a group. It seems he is to follow the rules of the group. I know him well enough to be able to verbalize disagreement on some things.

Trish I am on my phone but am interested in checking out that link when I get on my PC. Thanks.

Wannabehealthy 02-18-2019 08:24 AM

Here is something else I found in that same chapter and it's something I've heard before.

The longer you have obesity the harder it is to lose. He goes on to explain that the longer you are obese the higher your insulin levels will go and even changes in diet will not lower the levels. This explains why we can improve our diet and really stick to our plan but still struggle to lose anything. I feel this is going to lead to fasting to lower the insulin levels. Reading on.....

Ok Here it is a few pages later. Paraphrasing. Back in the 60s people ate 3 meals no snacks. Breakfast at 8 with dinner at 6. They were combining 10 hours of eating with 14 hours of fasting. Even though they were eating higher levels of carbs and sugar, the long fasting period gave them a longer period of lower insulin. Insulin resistance requires persistent levels of insulin.

This is how I remember eating growing up. We ate lots of carbs but had a long fast from dinner to breakfast. The persistent insulin levels developed when levels developed when people started snacking all day keeping their insulin levels up, therefore developing insulin resistance. Very interesting to me.

fatmad 02-18-2019 09:05 AM

150 again today after a good day of eating yesterday. I think to mix it up, as I have been fasting a day and feasting a day for a while, I should eat again today. SO that's the plan, and will fast tomorrow again. I must be careful and not eat a lot of carbs, but I do want some of my soup. I will have that before we go away later today for our ski.
Carol, I do also think that the other part that is missing when we speak of how we ate many years ago is the exercise portion. Unless a lady had a maid, her housework was more physical than what we do today. And as an at home lady, my mother and grandmother swept or dust mopped, and made beds etc daily. Laundry involved a ringer washer (I remember my mum "getting an automatic" when I was 8 or 9 a very big deal, and grandma got hers a year before) and hanging it out, and then ironing. This was just ordinary stuff. While my Dad did a lot of physical labour (and ate accordingly) even those who worked in offices walked place more, and did a lot of physical stuff around the house. We didn't call it exercise of course, it was work or chores. Now I only vacuum once a week at most, and same for laundry, which is a very easy chore in comparison. We do dishes by hand for now, but even that is not a lot when there are only two of us. Today I will play out with the dog and maybe get a ski in late afternoon. DH plans night skiing and we both hope to ski for a while tomorrow. I have been terrible about exercise.
As we all know, exercise really helps glucose move around the cells, and while blood sugar rises temporarily to feed the working muscle cells, it lowers it overall, because its getting used as it was meant to be used. We get rid of lots of stored glucose that way. This winter has really halted me more than usual I think. Much icier than past years.
For tone if nothing else, I need to do more.
