That's interesting that you found that great group on FB Trish. I hope you will post helpful information that you learn from them. All of us could benefit from it. DH would never eat low carb either, but as of yet, I have never been successful with controlling blood sugar while including starchy carbs. I sure would love to learn their secret, although I know we are all different and I just might be one who cannot handle starchy carbs.
I am feeling good about myself today because I am back to eating healthy food. This morning I had an egg and some cooked kale. At lunch time I had some canned yams, a half an orange. I have defrosted some pork chops for dinner, and will serve them with green beans and rice pilaf for DH. I would love to have some of the rice, but I want to keep my carbs very low at my evening meal, and hopefully will not snack in the evening. That is what works for me with fasting blood sugar. I forced myself to put on regular shoes today and walk around more. I put on my Easy Spirit walking shoes that I wear for exercise instead of the slip ons I usually wear around the house. I took some Tylenol but not the RX pain med and the pain is there, but tolerable. If I'm busy my mind seems to forget it's there. Yesterday I watched part of a show on PBS with Dr Joel Fuhrman about the Nutritanian WOE. I missed the beginning. Then it was on again today and I missed the beginning again. LOL So I got out my book the End of Diabetes and was reading that for a bit, getting myself more interested in veggies again. I need the antioxidants from the veggies, I know. I was also reading a book by Dr Atkins about nutrients for anti-aging. By comparison, he recommends one supplement after another, while Dr Fuhrman recommends getting the nutrients from food. I think I will donate that book back to Goodwill because I feel that it's better to get the nutrients from food rather than popping pills all day. I'm going to be eating anyway, so why not eat nutritious foods? My outlook seems so much better when eating right. |
I will have some sugar free jello and then I'm finished eating for today. I want to have a nice long fast overnight. I bought some frozen green beans from Aldi's and they were so good I will never buy canned anymore. I had some frozen from Walmart but they were not as good as the ones from Aldi's. DH actually went back for seconds. That's a first!!
I am expecting to have a higher carb count when I track my food for today because of the yams, but they have fiber and nutrients so that makes them OK in my book. I am pleased with my reentry into healthy eating. EDIT: The yams were only 64 gm of carb and I didn't even subtract out the fiber. So not bad today. |
Carol Sue Here is a link to the Diabetic info site I'm reading and learning from... you don't have to go through FB to get it. It is online. I added it to my favorites so I can go there without being on FB.
https://diabeteswhattoknow.com/ There are some archives on there and I just read one by an Endo that I will try to find again about FBS readings. If I can find it I will post the link to it as well. |

Trish, I feel like I'm an Endo. LOL I just recently mentioned that when I eat a smaller dinner and no snacks in the evening my FBG is remarkably lower. I ate my dinner with no starchy carbs and had no snack in the evening and my FBG was 116. My FBG has been running between 145-165 the past week or so that I've been having the poor food choices. I did eat a lot of the green beans. They ARE carbs, so I'm not omitting carbs, just starchy ones. And my doctor never asks about my FBG but goes according to my A1c. If it's good, he's satisfied, just like the Endo said. So I feel that I'm on the right track to straighten out my blood sugar. To be honest, I DO envy those who can eat the starchy carbs, but for the most part, I'm happy to know that skipping them is better for me. I am excessively carb sensitive. That might change as I lose more weight.
My weight is also down to 192 again this morning. I was up to go to the bathroom 3 times during the night and I think I was losing the excess fluid that accumulated from eating the carbs. I will be going through the archives, seeing what they have to say. Thank you! |
Hi everyone. Just dropping in for a quick update. I'm still sticking to my eating plan and workouts. My weight is down to the lowest it's been in YEARS! Blood sugars have also been good and found out today that my a1c is down to 6.3(from 6.9 2 months ago)! I am so happy and even more determined to keep doing what i'm doing, losing weight, staying on plan so that one day i'll get to my goal and get this a1c out of pre-diabetic range!

I am so happy for you Mom2pands! You are succeeding at this and are setting a good example for the rest of us! WooHoo!!!
I tried to sneak unsalted butter in on DH and he just told me "There's something wrong with this butter you bought." LOL I told him I picked it up by mistake. Guess I have to go back to salted. |
Carol Sue You are very welcome. I know you like to keep up with things like I do and we can always learn more. I am thrilled to know that my doctor actually stays on top of things as he had just explained to me how what I ate at supper affects my FBS pretty much the way the endo does in that article.
momtopands Congratulations! You are doing great. My FBS was 5.8 last time I had my A1c, but I had been on Trulicity. I am now on no meds so I'm hoping to keep mine in the lower 6's. I learned years ago that we have to learn what works for us individually and do it. You have obviously found your way. Great job. I am amazed. I recently saw that I do better with some starchy carbs in my food plan, but as my SC doctor always said... "the proof is in the numbers". My FBS was 186 yesterday and today was 158. I am eating completely different from the way I have eaten with low carb. I'm eating from all food groups and I am counting the calories. I'm not eating an enormous amount of carbs, but I am eating more. My carb ratio on MFP is 35% of my calories. I have added some fat back into my plan. Since DH and I only drink milk once a day, we went back to whole milk. I am amazed that just by adding the milk and a serving of healthy starchy carb that I am not hungry for a snack at night. I did want a little something yesterday and I saw Carol Sue was having jello. I keep individual servings of SF jello in the fridge so I decided to have one of those with a serving of light cool whip and it was all I needed. The interesting thing is that I didn't go to bed until 2:30 am. You remember, I usually am starving when I stay up that late. I am so thankful Daddy is in the facility he is in. His allergies were acting up and he had some swelling Saturday. I called the nursing station Saturday night and asked them to check on the swelling. They gave him a Lasix Sunday to get the fluid down and because he was coughing so much and something is going around they decided to do an x-ray of his chest. I was amazed to learn that they were able to do the x-ray in his room. By the time DH and I got there after DH eye doc appointment, they had done the x-ray and read it. The nurse came in right after we got there and told us his chest x-ray showed all was fine. DS called a few minutes ago and the doctor actually came in today and checked him out. I just hope we are able to keep Daddy there. He is own allergy meds and when he asked the girl for one yesterday she told him she had already given him one This gives me real peace of mind that he actually does have 24/7 care where he is. I am so impressed with the fact that their facility doctor actually goes in to see the patients there. They sure weren't like that when I worked in nursing homes years ago. That is a great improvement. Right now I'm eating just 2 meals a day only I switched the 2 meals to breakfast and a meal at 3ish. I will keep the SF jello to get me through the evening when needed hoping that I can continue to eat just breakfast and late lunch. It would be nice to be able to eventually let the snack fall by the way side. Have a great day. |
Trish, have you cleaned out your Dad's apartment yet? That will be a big undertaking but if he is definitely not going back there it's best to do it as soon as it can be done. Has he come to terms with that, yet? I think if he is happy where he is he will not miss having his own place. What about his car?
I don't know what I'm going to eat for dinner tonight. I want to make a salad but I want to eat some protein, too. DH wants potato pancakes and I won't eat them, so I can choose for myself. I had a turkey in my freezer that I bought extra at Thanksgiving. I was going to cook it for Christmas but decided against it. I defrosted it now and will cook that tomorrow. That's something that DH will eat leftover, so we will have that for Wednesday and Thursday. I will either freeze what's left or give it to my step daughter. I'm not crazy about frozen leftover turkey. It's just not the same as fresh. Hope everyone has a great day! |
Carol, the third book is the Diabetes Code. I suspect they will have a lot of overlap. I got them on Amazon for the Kindle (easy to download the app) because it is so much cheaper.
To get it on my Kobo app (I prefer that app, easier to read) would have cost much more. The Kindle version, all three books were under 20 dollars canadian. I have spent that much on a single book, so I thought I would just go for it. Like tonight, first evening of great weather, and we just bought our new barbecue and had a nice steak supper. I had salad with it, and I was not really hungry afterward, but had some berries and cream, then a bran muffin. Now why did I feel the need for the muffin? I hope I can find a way to avoid these carbs situations. I have been having the bran muffins a lot because I am really regular with them, and after all the bowel problems I am enjoying having neither loose BMs or constipation. So I bought some plain bran, and will add that to my smoothies. All out of bran muffins now, will go back to my usual morning smoothies, with the aded bran. Hope things keep going well for everyone. I will eat low carb tomorrow and start the IF on Thursday. Tomorrow is too long and stressful a day at work to try a fast then. |
Ok, Mad, now I remember hearing about Diabetes Code. I find having books on a Kindle or other e-reader very convenient. It can be easily tucked into a purse or tote bag and available any time you catch a moment or two to read, like waiting for an appointment, etc.
I often feel that same need for a carb after eating a carb-free meal. I don't really know why that is, but think it has something to do with the body still adjusting to not having the carbs on a regular basis. A withdrawal of a sort. A bran muffin is a good choice for that. A half muffin would probably suffice, but I see you have added the bran to your smoothie instead. My FBS was up a bit this morning, 169, but weight is down to 191. I am soooo close to the 180s I can hardly stand it. Crossing the line seems to be so difficult. It should be easy. A few days of diligence should do it. Last night I was lying in bed wanting a bowl of wheat bran flakes. I crave the darndest things. LOL I think it's the bit of sugar in the ones I buy that draws me. I resisted, since I was not actually hungry, and I was able to fall asleep without it. I don't understand why they have to put sugar in it but I have heard that sugar can act as a preservative. The person eating it has the option to add sugar or sweetener if they want it. I have never liked sugar on cereal except for oatmeal and cream of wheat. This morning I have to run to Walmart for a few things and maybe get a haircut, before coming home and starting the turkey cooking. I wanted to start it early before the day heats up, but I do need to run these errands. |
A quick flyby this morning. Having a mammogram this afternoon. I like to do those first thing in the morning, but I changed it because it is only about a mile from where Daddy is so I save gas money by working it in together. DH is getting up to go with me so we can get our car serviced while on that side of town too. Will also get the car washed. I'm thinking about trying a church Sunday and would like to have the car cleaned before hand.
I am amazed at how adding the starchy carbs into my eating plan and eating more of a balanced diet plan is working for me. I true answer to prayer for me. My weight is inching down slowly and so is my FBS. It was 158 yesterday and was 153 this morning. Weight is slowly coming down too down .2 lbs this morning. I think of the cartoon of the turtle and the rabbit. The turtle stayed steady and won. I made bran cereal with Greek yogurt and eggs and sausage this morning. I ended up saving half of the cereal and yogurt for tomorrow because I couldn't eat it all. DH asked if we were have BLTs for dinner yesterday and I had fish thawed out so we will have the BLTs today when we get home. We will be late getting home and it will be easy to nuke bacon and he will make his own sandwich which will be helpful as well. I've had 3 days of exercise now. I'm shooting for 5 days a week hoping to get at least 3 in. Carol Sue We have to go to Walmart too. DH needs grapes and we need bananas and milk. BBL |
Trish, we bought bananas and milk, too, but no grapes. I don't do grapes. I am surprised at how the price of eggs jumped at Walmart. It used to be that Aldi's was the cheapest in our area but while most stores prices were rising, Walmart kept their at 88 cents, way below even Aldi's. Then a couple weeks ago they went up to $1.18 which was still lower than other stores, but today they were $2.19. I have enough to last for a while so I will check Aldi's next time I am there. It's right next door to Walmart, but I go to Walmart more than Aldi's. I wonder if this price hike is due to the salmonella scare.
I was finished shopping and headed to the check out when DH told me he wanted to check tires for our older car. He could have been doing that while I was shopping! He decided to buy them, so that delayed us more going around the back to pick them up, and I still had to come home and put the turkey on. Luckily, it seems to be cooking faster than I expected so we will be eating on time. It is 80 degrees outside, and 86 degrees inside with the oven on!!! Yikes. I forgot what summer feels like and it' really too soon to turn on the air conditioner. I'm glad you are happy with your food plan and your numbers, Trish. I am happy with mine, too. I haven't had a BLT for ages. I rarely buy bacon anymore, and tomatoes are terrible here until summer. |
Laundry done and probably going to bed a little early than I have been lately. I want to get some cleaning done around here tomorrow. My niece and her 2 baby boys are coming over Friday. We haven't been able to get together with all that went on with Daddy, but now that things are slowing down, we can start getting together more often. Looking forward to seeing them.
Carol Sue I buy grapes and never remember to eat them and now that I'm not eating in the evening most evenings, I don't need them. Extra large eggs were $2.20 for 16 count at HEB, but I noticed they had a Limit of 4 at that price. If you wanted more, they were over $3 each. We can still get Romaine lettuce here, but then we weren't one of the states that had the recall either. I buy the store brand and most of their brands are TX grown. I don't know what the thing is about the eggs. We were so late getting home that we decided to stop at Bush's Fried Chicken place to get chicken to bring home and I threw some veggies together to go with it. I don't like it from the one over by Daddy because their chicken is always so dry. The chicken we get out closer to us seems to be moist and tastes better. Strange since they are the same chain. I am losing my taste for fried chicken for some reason. Even my Daddy recently commented on the fact that I don't eat fried chicken like I did before DH and I married. I think it is because you couldn't buy it in So. FL and there wasn't any place near where we lived in SC that cooked it like we did here in TX. Funny how tastes change. In fact, I'm actually getting in that funky mood where nothing really tastes good right now. I didn't even get hungry for my junk food tonight. Not sure what that is about. I got my mammogram done and glad that is over. I told them I would see them next year. They are so very nice and I love how they seem to set their appointments up to where you don't really have to wait more than a few minutes. Got our car serviced and washed. We don't ever drive our car as long as we did with the oil change so I was glad to get it done. We've got to go buy 2 tires to replace the ones on the back. DH said he will have them move the 2 on front to the back and get 2 new ones for the front. We need to do that next week. Although we had the chicken, my calories were good today. Putting veggies together instead of buying sides helps a lot to keep calories down plus I got a lot of exercise today with walking a minimum of 30 minutes and 20 on the bike before we left. So I've had a very good day. Daddy was tired but he has been getting in pretty much 2 hrs of rehab this week. They worked with him getting in and out of bed and going to potty. He is taking small baby steps too and practicing getting up and down from the chair. I think he is doing great although he does still have a long way to go. fatmad We are having nice weather here too although it is supposed to rain tomorrow. We didn't get any of the rain that was around us the past 2 days, but it kept things nice and cool. Very windy though. Going to bed. Goodnight. |
Trish, DH doesn't like fried chicken. He rarely ate chicken before they came out with the boneless skinless breasts. If I made chicken, he would pull 1 big piece off a breast and leave the rest. He would not pull the rest of the meat off the bone, and I think that's the best part. LOL So I don't get much fried chicken anymore except at a few places like Bob Evans that serves boneless skinless breasts, either fried or grilled. His mother used to make good fried chicken but she just dredged hers in flour and fried it. Not a lot of coating. He never ate that when she made it but I did. When I cook chicken it is either roasted or grilled.
Last night we ate turkey, then gave the leftovers to his daughter. DH didn't feel like eating turkey again today. I kept some in a little container for me to snack on. There was a lot leftover from that turkey and they appreciated getting that. In the evening, DH made some popcorn but I only ate a few kernels. Just didn't appeal to me, plus I didn't want high blood sugar. I didn't get on the scale yet today. I'm going to really push the next couple days, trying to get across that 190 line into the 180s. That would be a first in many years for me. |
