Carol Sue I don't seem to have the rash any more. I've kind of learned to balance the carbs. The last time I experienced the rash has been some time back and it seemed to have been caused by too much sugar. I don't usually eat much actual sugar and I don't eat enough of other starchy carbs to hurt me. I plan to try to keep all carbs between 3 to 5 servings like the Low carb for dummies book recommended. I don't really count the veggie carbs, but I will count the starchy carbs to keep them under 75 carbs a day. Although I don't intend to be eating that many in one day.
I read about gluten a number of years but I don't seem to fit the profile and I think it is because most of the starchy foods I do eat are multigrain. I don't eat a lot of white stuff although I do eat some. Example, I really enjoy crackers with my salads. Hopefully the oil and vinegar for dressing takes care of that as well as any others I may eat.
Thank you for thinking of me though. Also thank you for the info on keto rash as I have had that when I ate VLC, but I thought it was from too much fat another reason I don't eat high fat. I do believe that I need to keep fat, protein and carbs in moderation not high.
You were talking about your Mama cooking meat, veggie and a starch. I think that was how our parents were taught to cook back then. They kind of followed the 4 food groups back then. We were pretty healthy and I often wonder if we actually caused our health problems when we moved away from that and started more of one group than the old balanced way of eating. Plus people didn't eat a lot of snacks back then or at least we didn't.
I used to buy the Slim Jim's sausage sticks too. I bought an off brand because they were cheaper. I should have bought what I like since all of them are greasy.
I cook breakfast sausage the way I cook my bacon. I cook it in the microwave and when I get ready to eat it, the fat has been cooked out of it. I have a hard time eating bacon cooked any other way.
I either have a virus today or a reaction to the spicy sausage. I didn't realize it was so spicy. I might have to ditch it unless I can figure out a way to eat it that will make it milder. I will buy a mild version if I buy any more of it. I didn't go to see Daddy just in case it is a virus. One thing about it, I should have a good weight loss tomorrow. LOL I'm still going to have the meal I planned for dinner although I may ditch the salad and make myself a veggie soup to go with my cod fish instead.
That is another reason I decided not to do CAD and just count calories. Although I do love salads, I get really burnout on them sometime. This way I can eat other veggies even a soup instead sometime and still keep carbs and calories low.
Carol, I can imagine how hard it will be to give up on eggs for you. I hope you can manage it long enough to know if its the problem or not.
I have been looking at stuff about gluten caused rash, and it seems to happen just with celiacs? Is there a link to another rash associated with gluten?
I have to say, it looks like the rash DH has and hasn't been able to get healed. He will NOT be happy about not eating wheat.
If you think its hard for me to go gluten free, it doesn't shine a light on what it would be like for him. This is not a guy who is into alternatives.
He can barely manage my stuff, and while I don't cook special for him, his go to is to add bread to everything. He is all about the bread, pasta, cereal etc.
oy.

Mad, is your DH's rash itchy? Extremely itchy? That is the way I saw the gluten rash described. If it's not, then it might not be from gluten. I came back and edited my post after reading this article.
If your DH isn't having potty issues, then I would say his rash is not from gluten sensitivity, as the article makes it sound as if the two symptoms go hand in hand.
I am like your DH, in that bread has always been a very big part of my diet. Because of my diabetes, I have learned to live mostly without it, and if I'm not careful, it could cause a huge binge, and also a very high blood sugar spike. I have sprouted grain bread in the freezer because occasionally I like a slice of toast with my eggs. I have to pass on the rolls when we eat out, and I haven't had a sandwich in ages. I'm not happy about it, but I do what I have to do because I don't want to use meds to control my diabetes.
Since the don't really know what causes the autoimmune response that causes psoriasis, I am trying to check for some simple dietary item that could be causing my flares. After I had my bowel surgery it cleared up completely and stayed clear for 6-8 months, but I can't seem to pin point what might have caused that remission. Possibly the heavy dose of antibiotics I received in the hospital? As time went on, it gradually returned, and anytime it returns, it comes back worse than it was before. Also, it started around the same time as 1)menopause 2) thyroid issues and 3)major weight gain. Everything hit at once and there could be a connection.
Trish, the reason I thought of you when I read about the gluten rash is because you had told me you get the rash when you eat too many carbs and you also have the potty issues which you have not really pinned down to any one thing. I get the impression that gluten sensitivity isn't just from wheat, but from all grains, which would include multi grain, and you can have gluten sensitivity without being celiac. But you know your own circumstances better than anyone. It was just a thought.

this link is about people who are not typical type 1 or 2. I don't think they explain in very well, but may be helpful.
Carol, DH rash is very itchy and bumpy, but on his shins, not typical places. I suggested he go to his doctor and ask about testing, but in the meantime try to be gluten free with me. I thought he would go nuts, but as long as he doesn't have to do low carb and can have rice and potatoes etc he seems to be fine with it. I suspect I will have to watch him though, he won't stop and think things through. Its a good time for him to try since I am being gluten free and cooking that way, also I am off work this week and can cook and be around to remind him about how to eat.
And he does have bowel issues, but constipation type, which can also present with celiac, which was a surprise to me. I used to childmind a girl with celiac and I always thought it was the opposite, but like lactose intolerance, can go either way.
For me today, had some discomfort overnight and this am, but not too bad.
Its March Break here, and even though I don't have kids still in school, it will be busy around here with all the neighbourhood children around for the week. and my own littles will come round to dye eggs with me. Time to get some white eggs I guess.
Have a good day

Mad, I believe there can be IBSD or IBSC but I realize you are not talking IBS with DH. My BIL recently had rough very itchy patches on his shins. The doctor gave him a steriod cream which would clear it up but it would come back. Finally, he tried an inexpensive cream that my DH uses for dry skin and it worked. It used to be called Udder Cream, but not it is Udderly Smooth body cream. We get it in Walmart, but it's also sold in Target and some other stores. I don't know if it's sold in CA. BIL now calls it Wonder Cream because it worked so well. Since you are in a similar climate to us, it's possible that it's from the cold temps.
It is also sold in tubes rather than the jar. In our Walmart, it is not with the other creams and lotions, but over by the anti-itch type hydrocortisone creams and the like, in case you're interested in trying it.

Carol Sue I appreciate you thinking of me concerning the gluten. I guess it could be a problem for me, but I don't eat a lot of bread products any more. We don't even eat pasta any more. Those are things that just isn't big on our food list although we do seem to fall back on a quick McDonald's burger now and then when too tired to cook. I just need to be cooking at home more. I don't eat a lot of actual sugar and only keep it in the house for DH when he wants it however, the only time he uses sugar is on the strawberries and I've got him using Splenda on them instead. I only seem to get a bad rash when I go on a sugar binge and I don't do that any more because I want to avoid the rash.
Going out to see Daddy in a little bit when DH gets up. We have to get meds for DH at Walmart after so I'll get some Jimmie Dean sausage. The regular sausage I bought this week is going in the trash because it was too spicy. I don't do spicy very well any more. My stomach doesn't like it. I didn't realize original sausage was spicy. I like the JD turkey sausage better any way. DH wants a homemade pizza today and we like it on our pizza. Yes, I'm back to a modified form of CAD. It just seems to fit my lifestyle and since I'm doing low carb for the other meals/snacks (CM/CS) I can use some of those great keto recipes for my CM.

Trish, I see no reason not to vary your plan according to your needs on different days. You may want to do LC on some days, and on others, CAD might fit better with what you have planned. And then there might be days when more carb meals suit. I think when your body gets accustomed to the same thing every day it adapts and you the results aren't as good. Some people do carb cycling or calorie cycling so your body never knows what to expect and I see no problem with that as long as you keep your blood sugar and weight in line.
We had to go to the bank today. Our drive thru tellers are open on Sunday for a few hours. No more "bankers hours." We also stopped in Goodwill, and on the way home we stopped at the grocery store for a bag of potatoes. $3 a bag. We came out with $73 worth of food. LOL They had very good prices on strip steak, chicken thighs, pork chops, and ground beef. I want to make stuffed cabbage rolls tomorrow so I needed 3 pkgs of the beef, along with 3 heads of cabbage. I also got some carrots, walnuts, noodles, that were also at a good sale price, and DH got 2 bags of potato chips that were on sale. If I had sent him to the store for the potatoes he would have just bought them and would have only spent $3. LOL But it's all good food that we use regularly. This store is normally much higher priced than other stores in our area, but when they put things on sale the prices are very good. So I'm satisfied that we have some food in the house for some good meals. I prefer eating at home.
It's a beautiful day here today. Nice and sunny. A bit chilly, but not really cold. Spring is on it's way, although we still have a bit of snow in the forecast.

I had a good bit of pain overnight. Hands and legs. It could have been because I ate a boiled potato last night. Other night shades don't seem to bother me too much and I'm usually fine with a small portion of potato with a meal, but eating a whole potato and eating it alone might have been the culprit.
I got up early this morning and paid some bills online. Now it's time to start the stuffed cabbage rolls, so I need to wake DH up to help me. He cores and blanches the cabbage for me, and also lifts the heavy roaster and puts it into the oven. I also think I could put the empty roaster in the oven, then add the cabbage rolls. No lifting, until they are done and have to be taken out of the oven.
Carol, I just love cabbage rolls, and making them yourself allows you to make them somewhat low carb. My Dad's companion used to make them, and so yummy.
However, the tomato is nightshade. Are you still avoiding nightshades? I did that for a while too, and it seemed to help briefly, but after a while, no longer helped.
I have been reading about loss of nerve function that leads to muscle loss in the lower extremities as we get older. And the prescription is more exercise.
I am definitely going for a nice walk today. The dog loved going to the trail yesterday, and with March break on, I expect the conservation area will be busy so will likely return to the trail again. This is the trail near our former home in the country where we went with our dog who died in May. Its nice to have another dog around (even though she is definitely DD's dog, not ours) to take to the trail. Walks are just more fun with the happy little dog along.
Had a small cheat last night. DH wanted ribs, so we had some pre-cooked ribs with sauce from the grocery store. We checked and they were gluten free, but had onion in the sauce. I didn't eat the sauce, although of course there was some sauce on my ribs, even though I scraped most of it off.
My discomfort is down to a dull roar, no where near the bad stuff, but still around. The bloggers say not to expect miracles and that pain and symptoms subside slowly.
I would like onions and garlic not to be an issue. I'm not big on garlic, but like a little in spaghetti sauce etc, but onions are a staple for me, and I love them.
Oh well, its just a month, then I can test.
Carol Sue I don't eat potato a lot, but I do like a baked potato once in a while the way Wendy's used to sale it. I always eat mine with broccoli and cheese. I never eat just a potato. Don't know if that would help you or not.
fatmad I am a good example of the exercise for the extremeties. I can really tell the difference when I'm not exercising by the way my legs and feet feel. Even my knee joints feel better the more I exercise especially on the recumbent bike.
I have a meeting with DS, BIL and Daddy this morning with the new doctor and team at new facility. I actually got up early enough to get 21 minutes on the bike and I've got my low carb homemade version of Egg McMuffin although I ate it on Thomas MG muffin. It feels so good to be back in control of my eating. Lowfat/lowcarb is my way of eating that works best for me.

Mad, I don't normally notice a problem with nightshades. I ate eggplant twice in the past couple weeks with no problem. I also love onion and eat a lot of it. I like garlic but don't always buy it. I mostly use garlic powder for flavor. I don't eat a lot of tomatoes, but the cabbage rolls are cooked in canned crushed tomatoes. I put some rice in mine, but it's not a lot. I'm glad you are starting to notice a difference with your elimination diet.
Trish, I am not one to put sauces on anything, so the cheese sauce on the baked potato would not be for me. I usually only eat a small bit of whatever potatoes that I make for DH and I've never noticed a problem with them. I think that is because I am eating them with the meat and vegetables in my dinner and that offsets the small bit of potato. I don't really know that that's true. I like cheese, if it's a piece of cheese I eat by itself, but I don't like cheese on a burger or sandwich unless it's a grilled cheese. I also don't like cheese with eggs, like on an Egg McMuffin or in an omlette. I will eat cheese on things like zucchini parmesan or in lasagne. I just don't like it with everything. I like my meat and veggies mostly without any sauces or gravy. My veggies I eat with just salt and butter. I used to be different. I don't realize when I changed.
Carol Sue I don't use cheese sauce. I don't even make them although my baby sister does since her husband is a cook. He studied in our local trade school and is a wonderful cook. I just use whatever cheese I'm in the mood for when I have a baked potatoe.
We had a visit with the Director of Therapy and the Activity Director as well. Daddy had already talked to the PA about his meds. We learned that some of these new facilities like the Rapid Recovery center we went to just want to get the people in and get them out really quick. They don't want to be bothered with people who take longer. So they weren't surprised at what we had gone through before. Those places are connected to that particular hospital and they make it sound so great people want to go there only for some of us to find out it doesn't go the way they say. They should have known that the meds Daddy was on was going to keep them from helping him so they should have declined him. Lesson learned.
These people seem to believe they can really help Daddy get back to walking. Of course, no one can guarantee that. OT will work with Daddy's shoulder. He has a bad rotor cuff and the other facility didn't even have anyone who could or would work on that, but the DOT told us how they can work with that to strengthen it. We are going to go with that plan with the idea that he might have to have another shot in his shoulder. Although the facility doctor will take care of Daddy while he is there, he can go to his Primary doctor for him to give him a 2nd shot since he gave him the 1st one. They will work with us on that. If Daddy ever gets his grip back in that hand, he will be able to pull himself up and down again without help.
DOT said he had heard Daddy say he liked the way the therapist had worked his legs Saturday as he felt the burn. So he has assigned a certain therapist that will work Daddy the way Daddy likes. He will assign the OT who checked Daddy's shoulder to work at getting that arm and hand strong again. He set up for the Speech Therapist to see to getting him off the thick liquids and this place has some type of machine/gadget to strengthen his throat if he needs it although we don't think he does. The even have a machine that they use to help lift Daddy out of his chair to get him in his wheelchair, on toilet and bed. I tell you, this place seems to be far more equipped and more qualified toward getting Daddy well. We couldn't ask for more.
We didn't get to meet the DON or the dietician or the administrator as Medicare/Medicaid is there today inspecting them. Daddy had already talked to one of the Inspectors by the time we got there. Hopefully they are as good as they seem and not just because Inspectors are there.
This is article about muscle loss in older people. SO we have to keep trucking and not let this happen to us!
Trish, I am so happy for you and your Daddy to have found what seems like the best place for him. I hope the care continues to be this good! how wonderful for all involved.
I wound up having potty issues this morning. Not sure if I had too much lactose without lactaid yesterday, or if it was the rib sauce. Held up my walk for a bit, but I felt confident enough that things resolved that I was able to go for a nice long walk with the dog.
Have kept busy the rest of the day, and hope things are going well for Momtopands and other friends too.

Trish, you had referred to the way Wendy's had made the baked potatoes and they used cheese sauce, that's why I thought you meant sauce. I used to buy those potatoes with cheese and broccoli, but somewhere along the line I stopped liking a lot of the foods I used to like. Actually, I think I used to eat whatever there was available and now since I am eating less, I try to choose things that I really like rather than things that are just OK.
My stuffed cabbage rolls were good. I had a hard time entering them in MFP because most of the choices were a certain brand. I think I will go back and enter them differently, just entering meat and cabbage separately. There is only about 10 grains of rice in each one so I could enter a .10 cup for that. LOL I think they were higher calorie that the ones listed on MFP.
I was really tired yesterday so I went to bed early and turned on the TV but I fell asleep. Got up around 10 to take my bedtime meds and let the dog out then went back to sleep. I was a little hungry but was too tired to find something to eat so I went to bed hungry. I am no longer hungry this morning, an blood sugar is 124, so I am happy that I didn't eat. I have not weighed in a couple days.
Two nights ago my Cpap machine wasn't working right. When I tried to exhale, it was pushing too much air in and I couldn't. I didn't want to wake DH up trying to fix it, so I just got up. After he got up, we checked it, and the hose was loose where it connects to the machine and then it was OK. I got new supplies last week so we tried to attach the new hose and it won't attach. The connection is different. So it's nice that the place where I'm getting my supplies now is within driving distance, so we are going up there today to show them that the hose doesn't fit. I hope they can give me a replacement, or maybe we are doing something wrong. On the packing slip, it shows the hose costing $71. LOL I don't know how much I pay, because insurance covers most of it. I pay around $35 for all the supplies, hose, filters, mask.
Yesterday I had a list for Walmart but didn't want to go. Too tired. DH wanted his cereal, so he went alone, but only bought the cereal and milk, and actually put it on a credit card. $4.34. He could have gone to the grocery store 1 mile from our house, but he wanted Great Value cereal. He was angry with me that I didn't go so he didn't buy the rest of the things on the list. Men!! I always ask him what would he do if I die?
Trish, it sounds like this rehab place with do more for your Dad, and I like that your Dad is so enthused about it and really wants to do the work. I really hope he gets his mobility back. I had rotator cuff problem years back and went to PT. They gave me some exercises to do at home and they really helped. I haven't had shoulder pain for a long time. DH has it now, but he will not go to PT, so he just suffers with it.
Mad, I read that article, and I think I already have the muscle loss. But it's not too late to change that if I get off my duff and do my exercises!!!
Do you ever use Immodium? I keep that on hand at all times for when I have potty issues. If I am staying home I don't always use it, but I use it if I want to go out somewhere.
So enough chatty Cathy for today. LOL Hope everyone is doing well.
