Carol Sue I ended up not eating the guacamole burger. We ate somewhere else. When I eat a burger away from it is a small burger with one patty not 2 and I don't always have cheese on it either. I always have it with mustard only no mayo because some mayo has sugar. At home I make sandwiches the way DH Mother did when she was living -- no mayo or mustard just plain. I'm not sure I will ever have the guacamole when out because I don't know how they make it. However, it is nice to know there is a choice.
I'm having a very good day. I've gone back to the way I ate when I lost 60+ lbs without dieting. Today we had pulled pork with cole slaw, baked beans and a salad. I ate my salad for the veggies and ate only enough of the other food to satisfy my hunger and put the rest down the garbage disposal. I was amazed at how little I needed to eat. I have a dinner planned because MFP things it is necessary, but if I am not hungry I will not eat since I'm also doing IF. I felt so good when I did IF and the best feeling I'm experiencing is that feeling of "I'm in control". Feels soooo good. I don't know what DH BIL was thinking. We don't see them any more since they moved. Since they moved he has had some surgeries, which I think was a corrective surgery to a botched up stomach stapling he had done when they were first being done. And I gather from something he wrote about his wife on there anniversary on FB that he has had some sort of heart surgery as well. He probably knew I had been diabetic and didn't understand that I controlled it with the weight loss, diet and exercise. Funny thing is that I had just had a test done and was told that I was not diabetic. I'm not concerned about it. I just wish I had kept doing what I was doing and I wouldn't be fighting to get this under control again. I just look forward to getting back into those beautiful clothes that I wore back then. LOL |
Fickle: there is definitely a genetic component to type 2. it runs and even gallops in some families. But the genetics are compounded by lifestyle, and family habits.
I mean really, if you are raised by overweight, overeating parents who become type 2, and you eat like that, what are the chances you won't become overweight and type 2. However, even with genetics against us, good lifestyle things can help, like exercise, and reducing overeating. Unlike some type 2s, I was thin until my mid twenties, and only gained slowly for a long time. Then I had some bad lifestyle things, happen, namely, shiftwork. I didn't adjust my eating very well, and used caffeine and sweets to stay awake and alert on night shifts, and was shifting back and forth from nights to days in short bursts. I got hurt several times with exercise. I was also resistant to calorie counting in any way, so even when I tried to change my eating habits, I wasn't doing very well. I think my saving grace was that I do love vegetables, and pushing more of them into my diet has not been hard. there is also some research that suggests that those of us with a genetic predisposition may be more susceptible to sugar addiction. And that that is what leads us to where we are today. Well, I hope this insomnia relents, going back to bed now, to see if I can get a bit more sleep. |
I heartily agree that children tend to eat the way their parents eat and usually end up with the same problems as their parents. I am seeing that in reverse with my grandson. Next time he's here I want to weigh him, as he looks extremely underweight to me. Maybe it just looks that way because so many kids today are overweight. His parents eat very healthy, mostly grilled meats and seafood and vegetables, very few carbs, but I think as a growing child he needs more calories than he's probably getting. DH said he's just happy he's not overweight, but underweight can be bad, too. And he gets no exercise. Kids today just play video games day and night. Or maybe I'm just jealous because he's not fat like grandma! LOL
Mad, I stayed up until 11:30 last night, thinking it would help me sleep a little longer, but it didn't work. 4AM I was awake. Trish, there for a while I was getting good at throwing food out, but now I'm back to not wasting food. It makes me so mad. I wish my step-daughter lived closer because her husband is a very big eater and he would enjoy having my leftovers to take for his lunch. They would save a lot of money that way. There are some things you just can't cook in small amounts. I have cut my chili recipe in half, but it's still too much for the two of us. I just can't bear to throw it away. I freeze leftover meatloaf now, and enjoy a slice for my lunch once in a while. I have to get back to having one serving for supper and nothing else afterward. That always works for me. |
carole sue: it was a long time for me to learn to cook smaller quantities and put food away more. Almost never buy anything at costco now, unless I am having company in. The few things that I still get in larger quantities are pickles and olives etc, that don't go bad for a long time. We got butter on sale once, and still have a few pounds in the freezer. We have a deep freeze in the garage and I keep meal leftovers in single servings in the fridge freezer usually. We have a bar fridge from when DD was in university residence that we only use when we have company and need extra fridge space, mostly in warmer weather, in winter, like at Christmas time, we can keep stuff in the garage on shelves to stay cold, works great for sodas and beer etc.
I too have a horror of throwing away good food. I do enjoy cooking when people appreciate it. I love DSIL, he really relishes a good dinner, and I love to cook for him. My girls actually enjoy my home cooking more since leaving home. so freezer to the rescue, or I cook things for potluck day at work so others can enjoy and I just bring home leftovers if there are any. My late admin always took home any sugar free dessert things I made for the diabetic husband. I took him some SF cheesecake yesterday. Well, the dog would like a walk, and I need exercise. ttfn |
Mad, my mother couldn't stop cooking for a family of five, long after we had all moved out, and my MIL was the same way, but she had 5 kids and never stopped over cooking. I have cut down as much as I can, but some things are just too much food for 2 people. I will eat leftovers for lunch the next day, but DH won't.
Trish, I just watched Dr Oz, and I don't usually watch him. DH had it on because they were talking about the recent announcement that high carb diets can contribute to cancer. That is very upsetting to DH. There were 2 other doctors on with Dr Oz. I didn't catch the one doctor's name, but the other one was Dr Hyman. It was so surprising. The one doctor was short, about a half a head shorter than Dr Oz, but Dr Hyman was way taller than Dr Oz. I never thought of Dr Oz as short. Anyway, I fear that this new discovery will drive people to cut out carbs altogether, like a 0 Carb diet, but they stressed the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and that it's the starchy carbs, like sugar and flour that should be limited. It was really interesting. They explained that everyone has cancer cells in their body, but their immune system fights the spread. Starchy carbs such as sugar and flour feed the cancer cells and they grow. They interrupted the show with Breaking News in our area and when they came back, that segment was over. Dr Oz used to be on twice a day, but now it's just once a day. Maybe the show will be available to watch online. |
Fatmad You sound so like me. I had no weight problem until I was in my early 20s. I always attributed it to the fact that I lived with my aunt when I moved to Dallas and she insisted we eat 3 meals a day. I had never eaten 3 meals a day. I only ate when I was hungry and ate only as much as I needed to satisfy my hunger. I can't say whether I ate healthy, but I definitely didn't eat a lot of food. Funny, but when I lived alone or wasn't married, I was thin because I didn't eat if I wasn't hungry.
Carol Sue I will watch to see if I can find that show online. Thanks for sharing that. The strange thing is that after my Mother passed away, my baby sister and I decided we were going to do our best to never have cancer so we started eating healthy. That is when I started eating loads of fruits and vegetables mostly in salads. I was very particular about what I ate. The 2 of us almost became vegetarians. I say almost because there were some meats we didn't give up. Many times we made hamburgers for our family and she and I would have a veggie burger and salad. I don't like throwing food away, but I've gone back to some of the ideas I read in a book I had years ago that was more of an IE way of eating. That was when I lost so much weight after DH and I first married. It was recommended to leave one bite of each food on your plate to get out of the habit of thinking that you have to eat everything on your plate. In fact, back then DH and I were thinner because we seldom ate a whole meal when we went out to eat because we would share a meal. Maybe we both need to get back to doing that again. I read on a thread on another site, may have been an IF thread, where a woman said that she has changed when she eats to fit when her body wants to eat. She knows she is a person who wants a snack at night so she starts eating later in the day when so her eating hours include her night time eating. That actually made since to me. Haven't decided yet, but I just may try that and see how it works out for me. I always go back to the saying "If you eat when you are not hungry, you just overate". Well a busy day today. DH has a PT draw and we have to go pick up meds that Walmart forgot to give me the other day and one our insurance didn't want to pay for until yesterday for DH. :?: Don't know why they made him wait for days after it was due for refill. FB was down a little today so that is good and weight is holding not going up or down. That is good for me because that means something is working because I usually bounce up and down 2 to 3 lbs. I see this as my body adjusting before I start losing. Potty problems from the Metformin has stopped and it appears that the Metformin is working to curb my appetite which was one of the reasons doc put me on it in the beginning. Don't know how long it will do that so I will to use this time to make the new eating habits I want to make. Beautiful day out. I was able to sit on back porch for a while and soak in some sun and spend time reading etc that I like to do there. I always think of it as my personal sanctuary so peaceful and quite. Good place to relax and meditate. Y'all have a good day. |
My mother is type 1. My dad is not diabetic so far and just in the last decade became overweight. He's sporting a nice beer gut these days. I've always been overweight, obesity came in my 30's.
My grandmother was that way, never learning to cook for just two instead of 6. She used to cook Sunday after church dinners on her farm when I was growing up. When she moved into town, that stopped, but it was nice growing up. My dad however learned to cook from her and never cooked small meals. Busy day today. I am ready to go home. My hubby is a teacher and today his class was especially horrendous. He's requested to go to the Mexican place for dinner. He doesn't drink, but he says he could use one tonight LOL! It must have been bad. |
Gave blood yesterday, so I wanted to go out for supper. We went to the music sing around, and ate there, and enjoyed the company of friends. Left much earlier than usual though, as the back was just starting to get uncomfortable. The restaurant where we meet has terrible chairs, not comfortable at all. Insomnia is giving me problems again, ever since the time change. Also I am taking fewer drugs for pain, maybe I'm not dopey enough to sleep, LOL.
I have a busy day today, maybe i will get a bit more sleep before I have to get up? |

Mad, I always have trouble sleeping. I fall asleep instantly, but wake up a few hours later and half the time I can't get back to sleep. I am realizing that the time change makes it worse, but really, it's all year round. I fight taking something for it because I don't want to feel that I have to take something, but sleep is important for health. Last night I gave in and took a Benadryl. I slept until 5 and was able to go back to sleep until 7, so I consider that a good night. I went to bed around 10. It's not too bad now that I'm retired but it was terrible when I worked. I went to work like a zombie many times.
Fickle, I believe that most type 1s handle it the way your mother does. Like taking a pill for BP. I think they know that no matter what lifestyle changes they make, they will never be able to stop injecting the insulin. It's different with type 2. We can change, but are we willing? When I first got up today at 5, my FBS ws 114. Lowest in ages. After I went back to sleep and got up at 7 it was 132. I did not eat a snack before bed. I wanted to see if it made a difference, and it didn't really. From now on, when I wake up early like that, I am going to take my first Metformin of the day and see what that does. I can't believe that after 8 years I am still struggling with FBS. |
Morning all,,,yesterday I had a NSV (non scale victory) I took my gd to a little concert at a mall. Well after she was hungry so while she had her treat in the food court I ate my pre planned snack. I had cheese, pepperette, radishes and olives. So for me treat I bought a diet root beer and only a small one. It really felt like a treat. I was satisfied with my snack and didn't throw my eating out the window......huge for me!!!!
|
Grats p.a! NSV's are the best. :)
My grandmother has been begging me to come eat lunch for a while now. I normally eat with my hubby, and he's a picky eater and never wants to go, but today he's working different hours. So far she says she has rutabaga, cabbage, and some kind of meat. I'm drooling already..... |
A quick flyby just to say I'm still here, but very busy. We have talked to the realtor handling the building of the new house in TX. We have picked out the floor plan and the lot we want. We are waiting for the her to send us actual price etc for approve. Looks like we will be making a trip within the next few weeks to pick things out and sign a contract to get this started so hopefully we can sell our house and move in before my birthday in August when I have to renew my drivers license.
I probably won't be posting much although I will take time to read as we are going to have to start cleaning this house to get it read to show to sell. DH intends to contact the man next door first as he has mentioned that his son wants to move close to him, so he might want to by the house. DH will give them 1st opportunity to purchase the house before we putting it on the market. |
Trish, thats great. Hope things work out well. I have been really happy that I was able to stay on plan and keep losing through this back pain thing. Hope the same for you as you get ready to sell, that you can do both and not get sidetracked.
Fickle, that was a good laugh, how was lunch with Grandma. PA, NSV are great, especially in the middle of a food court. Good for you! Carol Sue, I think of taking melatonin as a supplement, just like I need the B's because of the metformin, even though I eat lots of leafy greens to get B.s, I still take the supplement, as it prevents the leg pain problems. As we age, we make less melatonin over time. Sleep problems like ours are pretty typical of our age. Napping can help, if it fits with your schedule, but so can melatonin. I take the webber supplement I buy at costco, called super sleep. I helps some, I have breakthrough insomnia still, but not as bad. I also had to cave and start back on a very low dose SSRI, but thats because I get a little anxiety thing going with work. This one isn't giving me the side effect (recurrent UTI's ) that I had with the other ones, so I have been able to stick with it. Until this back pain problem started, I was doing great. Its what gave me the impetus to start working on my diet again. Sleep deprivation made everything insurmountable, and being rested makes anything seem possible. We are too young to give up! |
Trish, that would be great if your neighbor's son buys your house. I always wished my step-daughter and son-in-law would move into our neighborhood, but they can't afford to buy a house right now, and maybe never.
Fickle, lunch with Grandma sounds great! I hope you enjoyed the food and also the visit with her. p.a. it sounds like you were really prepared with your little snack. Great! How old is your granddaughter? How did she like the concert? Mad, a friend takes melatonin every night and talked me into trying it. I took a very small dose one night and had a terrible night and felt terrible the next day. I don't know if the melatonin was the cause or not, but now I'm afraid to take it again. When I hear it said that our bodies make less melatonin over time I sometimes feel that that is part of God's plan. The same as menopause is part of God's plan. I guess I could be taking it a little too far. LOL There are other things that effect me and I take meds to correct them, why not sleep? |
