Yeah Trish,,,,that is my goal!
|
I am finding this new way of learning to control my blood sugar quite interesting. The results are very interesting. I think I will use myself as an experiment. The 1st day I was on CAD and off Metformin my FBS was 174 that morning. Before lunch my bs was 119. The 2nd day my FBS was 133 and before lunch it was 131. Today 3rd day FBS was 136 and before lunch earlier in day was 130. I did 45 minutes of exercise on day 1 and a little more than 45 minutes on day 2. I think I'm going to find that diet and exercise only does work, however, it just works slow and steady.
I heard an online message a friend shared on FB today and how eating veggies especially raw veggies helps heal our body because our bodies are too acidic and eating veggies balances the ph of our bodies by alkalizing it to as much as 7.5. I've had my doctor say this doesn't matter, but I've read about this before and I think there is something to this. The doctor who gave the talk said the vegan diet is the best diet for this and will heal our bodies of disease and that even cancer cannot live in an alkalized body. I'm not ready to become a vegan at this time, but wouldn't rule it out in the future. One thing this does tell me is why WW new way of eating is so good for you and I believe that considering how CAD has us actually eat more veggies than anything else, I believe it could work beautifully to lead to the same thing although maybe slower. CAD says half your low carb meals/snacks are to be half vegetable. The RM is to be a 2 c salad, and the rest of the meal is 1/3 protein, 1/3 low carb vegetable and 1/3 starchy carb. This makes it a very healthy way of eating. I also see why Atkins, Paleo as well as other low carb diets which is basically protein and vegetable work so well and are so healthy. I don't think we ever have to worry about eating any type of low carb diet. |
Trish, I think the exercise is probably making the biggest difference for you. Good job! I was reading something today where it said if you have problems with Metformin, take it AFTER your meal, not before or during. It seems that it's absorbed more slowly with food already in your stomach. I'm not sure when you take your in relationship to your meals. I take my first one in the morning when I get up and the second and third at bedtime, and I don't have any issues, but that's just me. I think I am going to take my first one around lunch instead of first thing, because I never eat carbs until later in the day. I have been reading a lot about it because I never understand when to take it, but people have all different times that they take it, according to how it works for them. Apparently, it doesn't matter.
Also, I know I will never become a vegan or vegetarian. I will never give up meat products altogether, but I definitely notice a big different in the way I feel when I eat a lot of vegetables. I do not like raw vegetables, other than salad vegetables, plus I have a much harder time digesting them. I think I will go cook some now. LOL |
Carol Sue I'm not sure if I've taken Metformin after a meal or not. I can't remember, but I think I have. I could try it and see, but not sure I want to go through the potty issues again if it does. I am actually getting my strength back. Although I always want to procrastinate on riding the recumbent bike, I actually feel better after I do it. I take Sundays off from exercising and I actually missed it. I just need to make it a habit and if it keeps working then I'll be happy.
I actually found out that I have the book the guy on the link my friend shared on FB recommended. I think you might have it too it is Overcoming Runaway Blood Sugar. I do enjoy my 2 c salad most days, but I don't really care to eat them raw all the time. I steamed a big bowl of veggies for supper tonight. I really enjoyed it. I'm not ready to give up all meat products either. However, one day when DH and were checking out at the store when we had only purchased fruits and veggies I told him that my vegan nephew and his vegetarian wife might be pretty smart because our grocery bill would be a lot less if we didn't eat meat. LOL I still think we need some of it. I also found Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book The End of Diabetes and am going to look at it again. However, I am still going to use CAD's way of eating. |
Yes, Trish, I have that book, too. I was cleaning out my books and put all my Diabetes Books in one box. I'm keeping all of them. I'm donating a lot of my other Diet Books to the library for their book sale. I buy so many of them at Goodwill, just to see what they have to say, and they are so cheap there. But most of them I know I would never follow for one reason or another. I just like to get ideas from them. I seem to have discovered that my body feels best when I eat meat and vegetables, so that's what I stick to most. Before I met DH I rarely ate beef or pork. I ate chicken and fish. Now I eat pork occasionally if I make it for DH and I'm starting to like steak, so I eat that occasionally, too. Nothing is really eliminated from my diet. I will eat even starchy carbs on occasions, but try to keep them to a small portion. Portion control will always be my biggest problem.
I'm sorry to hear that you cannot adjust to the Metformin, but with this diet and exercise plan you're on now, it seems like you don't really need it. I am a terrible procrastinator with my exercise. I get all gung ho and then stop after a day or two. Just have to push myself until it becomes a habit. I really do feel so much better afterwards, and notice a drop in blood sugar and blood pressure. |
The one day off from exercise didn't hurt my FBS. It was 138 this morning. I've done my 30 minutes already and will do the other 15 this evening. I'm doing 5 miles 6 days a week now. I am so thrilled that this almost 73 yr old woman doing this and it makes me feel so good. My Monday morning friend came over today for breakfast. I didn't change my diet. She had planned to bring something to sweet, but I texted her and told her that I was going to cook some eggs and bacon for us. I took my low carb veggies and added them to eggs and broken up crispy bacon and a small portion of cashew milk and made into a casserole. It actually looked like quiche and tasted great. I saved some for DGS breakfast. He has to get up so early to go work now and he can grab it and run.
I'm really pleased with my new way of eating. Have a good day. |
Trish, that was a good choice for breakfast, and who knows, your healthier eating might rub off on your friend! I have several recipes for the low carb breakfast casserole, but I don't make it because DH wouldn't eat it. Yesterday I was looking at recipes for the low carb egg muffins that you can make and freeze. They would be a good idea. They are similar to the casserole, but you bake them in a muffin pan so they are easy to freeze.
|
Carol Sue I thought that when I saw how my casserole turned out. They could very easily be made into a muffin. In fact, since it was a good CM meal, I could make some up into some small muffins and freeze and even have it as a CM snack. Thanks for the reminder.
My FBS was 129 this morning. BS reading was 125 just before our main meal. The only medication I am on now is my bp pill and I look to come off of it soon as my bp was 103/56 this morning. My weight is bouncing between 218 and 219 right now which usually means I'm getting to lose some more. My goal is to lose as much as I can before I move and when I get my new doctor, I hope to have my bp and A1c normal again. The doctor who first diagnosed me told me that he though I was one of the lucky ones who could control my bs with diet and exercise because I had it back under control within a week after I was diagnosed. I am so thankful that this works for me. I think DH is learning the same thing. He can't exercise as much as I do at least at this time, but his FBS has come back down since he started exercising again like he was doing before our trip and sickness. I'm also beginning to think that what I think is a cold or virus just may be detoxing which means there is more good things going on with my health. DGS just came home for a bit. He is working now but he is working as a painter and has been rained out at the moment. He told us yesterday that his friend has found an apartment and if they can get someone else to move in with the and share the rent that he will be moving out June 1st. That will help us a lot since I want to put the house on the market on the 1st. We are giving him a lot of the furniture that we won't need moving into a smaller house. He didn't graduate, but plans to go back spring and take the classes he didn't pass so he will graduate next year. He seems happy and is like a completely different person. He wants to buy the paint to paint the deck and side porch to get the house ready to sell. He said we had done enough helping him and he wants to buy the paint and do the touch up etc around the house. I think he will grow up and be a fine young man. I think he was just burnout and frustrated. Y'all have a nice day. |
I'm glad to hear your dgs is growing up and changing. It's nice that he's helping you to pay back the help you have given him. Is he taking medication? That would help him, too.
Trish, is your doctor aware of how low your blood pressure is? I don't think you need the BP meds. My diastolic number is low like yours, in the 50s, but my systolic is in the 130s and that's with medication. I have read up a lot about when your systolic is high and diastolic is low. I plan on asking the cardiologist about it when I see him on Monday. I want to see what he says compared to what I have read online. They say your diastolic shouldn't go below 55. |
Carol Sue I'm not sure if he is still take medication or not. He didn't get enough hours today and for the first time reality hit him that if this is going to be a habit (which goes with that type of job) he realizes he is going to have to find some other job.
No my doctor doesn't know. Today was the first time the bs was that low in a long time. I will keep an eye on it and I may find that with the new diet and exercise that I won't have to take it any more. I check and keep up with it every day. I have read of others on CAD being able to get off of all medication. My bs before lunch was 111. Getting better and better. :carrot: I overate at lunch so may do 50 minutes today and I realized when washing dishes that since I'm not taking any meds for bs that I don't have to eat anything else today. Of course on CAD you only eat a 3rd meal unless you are hungry. I forgot that last night and made supper and ate although I really wasn't hungry. I'm beginning to feel like I did when I did this 13 yrs ago. I just didn't eat a lot because I wasn't hungry. I'm following this better than I did back then. I found out yesterday that some of the FB CAD support group drink protein drinks sometime. I have one Slimfast protein drink in the fridge and could have that as a treat later instead of a meal. |
Went to Drs yesterday,,,,good news, my weight was down again. She was impressed. My A1C was great. She was impressed. My cholesterol was very high , she was not impressed. I had stopped taking my statin and she told me she knew by the number I had stopped. So I will start taking it again. I wish my blood pressure was low,,,I'm going on another med to get it lower still....So overall not too bad of an appt. she didn't up my statin just told me to make sure I take it. I told her I do low carb but I don't think she realized that meant higher fat. With my cholestrol being higher I'm going back to the measuring of heart healthy fats. No more
Cream cheese, butter or pepperonis. LCHF isn't good for me with heart desease. Trish I'm glad your finding the answer!!! Way to go! |
p.a. I have never been able to do the LCHF diet. High fat and me just don't mix well. Glad you had a really good doctors visit.
My FBS was up today, but it was my fault and I know why. I'm not upset as it was an experiment with the IR way of cooking potatoes, cool them and then eat them. It didn't affect me much when I had a small portion during my RM the first day, but I couldn't stop at a small helping yesterday because it just tasted so good. I gave it to DGS. He likes it and even puts it on a sandwich. Although my bs was 121 when I went to bed, it was 157 this morning. I want it back down in the 120s and lower. Potatoes most definitely will not be on my menu from now on. Another lesson learned. |
Last 2 days I've been treating myself, ( after Drs appt) back on track today. I know I'll have to tame the carb monster again but I knew that when I was cheating. Didn't stop me a bit . Weight is up, knew that would happen to. Back on track today and work on losing 10 pounds for next Drs appt...she's quite ok with me losing this slowly so I will be to. 10 pounds in 3 months is doable.
Trish. Friend of mine added me to a Facebook group that is LCHF,,,well today I 'unfollowed' them. I just can't watch them write about eating pounds of bacon smothered in cheese and dipped in butter anymore. I do believe LCHF can be healthy and good for you but I truly believe it should be healthy fat.. Long weekend here and the official start of summer! Have a good one everyone. |
Trish, I get confused about resistant starch. What I originally heard was that the potatoes had to be cooked, cooled and refrigerated for 24 hours, the way you would do with potato salad, in order to be resistant starch. Lately I've read that they only needed to be cooked and cooled. Apparently that didn't work for you. I have never tested with potato salad because DH likes it made fresh the same day, not refrigerated overnight. I'm better off if I stick to very small servings of potato.
p.a. I also cannot eat high fat. It just doesn't agree with me. I don't have to eat low fat, but can't add additional fat to my food. I get heartburn and sometimes potty issues. Bacon is one big offender. I can eat a small serving, like 2 slices they give you in a restaurant, but anytime I cook bacon or even sausage for that matter, I blot it with a paper towel to get rid of the excess grease. My mother used to fry eggs using bacon fat but I can't do that now. Big time indigestion. Fat is very contraversial. Some say it's bad, some say it's good. Mono and Poly seem to be healthy, but saturated fat is the one in question. |
I agree that the Insulin Resistant theory of potatoes or other things are confusing. So is the info about fats. I can use some fats for cooking and some I can't. I just can't add fats.
I didn't cool the potatoes the 1st day for 24 hrs. Just cooled them long enough to get them cold. It didn't seem to bother my FBS reading the following day as it stayed about the same as the day before. But when I overate it the next day it did raise the FBS to 157 the next day. So I really think I could eat it occasionally but not on a regular basis, but only if I would just eat a normal portion. The strange thing is yesterday. We ate at Golden Coral. I had my RM exactly as I was supposed to eat it. I had a nice size salad with FF Ranch dressing, 1 fried chicken thigh which I didn't eat all of because it was too greasy for me, a fried fish fillet and a few popcorn shrimp and lots of veggies. I ate about 3/4 of the my favorite carrot cake. Last night I was hungry, I had protein, lots of raw veggies and a small bag serving size of potato chips. I was craving the chips so chose to just have a small second RM so I would not go hey wire and end up binging. This morning my FBS was 121. I will probably be coming off the bp medication too, but will not stop it as of yet. My bp this morning was 94/53. Remember it was 99/55 yesterday. However, my weight is up because of all the carbs the past 2 days. This way of eating is really working for me so I'm back to following the CAD program. |
