Lilliann, there are those that say you don't have to do perfect. If you stay on plan 80% of the time, that's great. Everyone slips off every once in a while. The key is to kept it to every once in a while, and get right back on plan after that. Sounds like your BG is improving. Good job!
Trish, I'm happy to be continuing to stay in Onederland, although I would like more of a drop, but this is good considering the holidays. I don't eat holiday food except on Christmas Day. I usually bake a ham but DH and I didn't want all the salt this year so I bought an extra small turkey around Thanksgiving and have it in the freezer. I will make both a turkey and a ham as his kids like to have the ham. There will be plenty of food for everyone. I will make a big bowl of potato salad and some pasta salad without italian dressing as my step-son cannot eat mayo. I will make other things as sides and snack food, some dips and spreads for vegetables and crackers. I am not having a sit-down dinner, just eat what you want when you want, as people will be in and out throughout the day. A casual Christmas. I hope you get your sink fixed. |
Carol Sue I'm glad you are staying in Onderland. :carrot: You are doing great with the baking you are doing. I think we will all see better results when we get through the holiday.
Using MFP to get the carb/fat/protein percentages set, I believe that I've gotten my plan tweaked to fit the my own low carb plan. Can't get exact so it is approximate. I am pretty sure a lot of my problem is sodium. I did eat oat meal for breakfast, but since I learned what clogged the sink and the cost of having unclogged, I'm not sure about eating any type of food that swells/expanse is wise. So not sure I will keep it. Maybe there is a reason they say no grains. It cost $331.00 to learn that the noodles DGS puts down the garbage disposal (and maybe left over rice I put in there) was why sink was clogged. WOW. He told DH that noodles are one of the worst things you can put down the garbage disposal because it swells and hardens and clogs the pipes. He had to cut a piece of the pipe out where it was clogged and replace the pipe. My beautician had already told me the day before that rice and cabbage will clog it too. This makes me wonder if this stuff does that to my sewer pipes what does it do to me? Maybe that is why it isn't wise to eat it. Also makes me wonder about the rice I was down the garbage disposal too. DH and I don't eat pasta any more unless we go to Olive Garden, however we do put leftover rice down the sink when I bring home Chinese food because we just don't eat much of it. So I'm not sure I will be cooking it any more myself. I don't know if the non-flour pastas or brown rice does the same thing or not as I didn't talk to the plumber. DH did. However, this does make me re-think low carb... perhaps this is why low carb is so much better. Hum:?: It certainly makes sense to me as to why we should be more careful when it comes to eating simple carbs. Changed my ticker to fit where I am. While I did lose 1.2 lbs this past week and I'm thankful for that... no fanfare as this is all recycle lbs which I shouldn't be having to deal with. I have upped my time on the bike to 27 minutes so I can do 3 miles instead of 2. That will be good for my FBS. I'm planning ahead and cooking to add more veggies to my plan. MFP counts them so the carbs look higher, but I don't worry about that. |
Trish, I put everything down my garbage disposal and I have never had a clogged sink in 34 years we've lived here. I do know that when you run the garbage disposal you supposed to run the water for a minute or so after your turn off the disposal, to wash everything down. I can see if getting clogged if someone put it down the drain, but not with a disposal. I don't understand. We are on our 3rd disposal. I have had things go down that aren't supposed to be in there, like bones, and sometimes a knife or spoon goes down by accident and I think it breaks the blades.
I guess that's why they call starchy foods "stick to the ribs." It really does stick. I went for my blood work this morning, now I wish I had waited a little longer. I know it's not going to be good and will be better after I get back to exercising after the new year. But I think I am going to need an increase in my glimiperide even though I don't want to. I have been taking an extra one here and there and am going to run out before my refill is due. I know that I don't have to take it every time if I get my blood sugar down some, but it will be good to have it if necessary. I really want to get off it altogether. I say that, but I keep eating bread. ;) Other than increasing my meds, I want him to send me for an endoscopy. I know I have a hiatal hernia, but now my nephew has cancer of the esophagus that has spread to his liver and he is terminal according to the doctors. That has me worried about my esophagus. Better to get it checked. |
Trish, I googled and found exactly what you said.
http://food.thefuntimesguide.com/201..._disposals.php Even though I read this I will continue to do as I've always done, putting these things down my garbage disposal but will be sure to run LOTS of cold water before and after since I never had a clog. Like they said, I will put small amounts through at a time. Sometimes I used to run hot water thinking it would melt the fat, but they say cold water solidifies it making it easier for the disposal to chop it up. I also put some baking soda and an ice cube down there once in a while as I heard that cleans it out and helps get rid of any odor. I cannot put food in my trash, as when we put it out for the garbage man, animals smell the food and tear the trash apart. |
Carol Sue Thanks for the website. I'm surprised at some of the things it says not to put in the disposal. I don't always use cold water and didn't know to let the water run for a while after turning disposal off. Strange thing is that with some of the things it says not to put in there makes me wonder why have one. I mean really. I know it is difficult to get DGS to even run the disposal so I am going to try to get a copy of this to tack up in the kitchen for him and me to remember.
I always take things that cannot be put down the disposal and put it in a plastic grocery store bag and place it in the freezer. Then on trash day I put it in the trash to be picked up. Guess I haven't been doing it enough. I never put bones down mine. DH replaced the garbage disposal that came with the house with a really good one and it should be able to handle bones, but DH didn't think it was wise to put them through it so I don't. Guess I will have to change the way I do it. I am so sorry to hear about your nephew. I will be praying for him and your family. Well, I'm not really OP these days. Holding my weight about the same. I think when all this is over, I'm going to do South Beach. My best friends daughter wants to do it and I told her maybe she and I could do it with her. I don't go for cutting the fat back as much as SBD does, but I won't worry about that too much. I think I'm going to need the structure. I'll need it to get away from this desire for sweets I seem to have developed. |
Trish, if a bone goes into my garbage disposal, it's accidentally. I don't put them in there on purpose. If I have chicken bones I put them in a plastic bag and put them up on the wooded hill behind our house. Some critters must eat them, because DH will go up to get the bag a few days later and it's empty. We get a lot of deer, raccoons, groundhogs up on that hill.
DH has a habit of pushing something down the garbage disposal but not running it, coffee grounds, egg shells. So several times a day I run the water and and disposal to be sure it gets cleared out. If you dump in some baking soda then follow with some vinegar, it bubbles up and cleans it out. I think so, anyway. |
Merry Christmas everyone,,,,,
Heading to my dds for a few days then I will be back! Thank you for all your support here and I hope your holiday is everything you want it to be. |
p.a. Have a great time with your DD and have a safe trip.
Carol Sue Thanks for the baking soda and vinegar idea. It can't hurt and it definitely will keep the disposal smelling good. I use baking soda in my fridge to keep from having bad smells in it and actually I need to put some in my fridge now. I lose track of when I changed it last. |
Trish, wait til you hear this. My company left and DH and I were cleaning up and the water pipe broke under my kitchen sink and water went all over the floor. DH cleaned up all the water and looked at the pike and says it's clogged!! He says he's not calling a plumber, he's fixing it himself tomorrow. We'll see. I guess it's a trip to the hardware store tomorrow and an all day job fixing the pipe. I was cleaning up as we went through the evening so there's not a lot left to clean, but I hate not being able to clean up.
|
Last night I had trouble sleeping. I woke up around 2 AM and couldn't go back to sleep. I tossed and turned and I know I was still awake around 5 AM. Next thing I knew it was 11 AM. I can't believe I slept that long but I feel much better. When I got up, DH had the clog fixed and now he's putting it all back together. It was probably a combination of a small clog and the fact that he just installed that garbage disposal recently and might not have had the pipes sealed properly. I could never tell him that, though. LOL I'm just glad it's fixed and I will be able to clean up the rest of my dishes.
Other than that, our Christmas was great! |
Carol Sue I am so sorry your sink clogged especially when you needed to clean up. You don't realize how much you use the kitchen sinck until you can't use it. I'm glad DH was able to fix yours and you have it back without calling a plumber.
DH and I have just been taking it easy and enjoying not having anyone in our house but the 2 of us. DGS comes back on the 9th of next month. I'm sure he is really going to be wound up when he returns because he can't drive down there because no one has a car that he can have to drive especially at night. We talked to his Mom Christmas eve and learned that he does them like he does us. You say anything he doesn't like when discussing his plans etc and he will walk out of the room because he doesn't want to hear it. I've gotten to where I won't answer him when he asks or tries to talk to me about some things because I know he doesn't "really" want to know m opinion. So why waste my time. He graduates in May and we hope to move soon after. So I am going to try to keep things as good as I can. My eating went very well. I am thinking in terms of kind of a SBD/CAD/IF combination. We will see how it goes. I haven't gained weight. In fact, I'm hoping for a little bit of a loss WI Monday. Can't believe we are so close to ending 2015. I sure hope 2016 is going to be a good year. |
Trish, the more I think about our sink mishap the more I think the pipe was not clogged, but that DH didn't properly tighten the joints on the pipes when he installed the new disposal, because it seemed that he started to check "the clog" and it was clear in a matter of minutes. If it was really a clog it would have taken longer to clear it. We have had clogs in the bathroom sink because when he shaves he rinses the hair down the sink. For that, he had to buy a snake to clear it. Didn't need anything but a hose for the kitchen. He would never admit that he didn't tighten the pipes tight enough. I'm glad it's fixed. I haven't had to use the disposal since then and I'm a little afraid to use it. We did have a lot of stuff to put down it Christmas night.
Your DGS sound like a typical teen/young adult. They always know better that us "old folks." LOL You and DH and really doing him a big favor letting him live there while he finishes school. Yesterday my step-daughter came and took the rest of the leftovers. I had half a ham left, potato salad, pasta salad, bean dip, rye bread and buns. Her husband is a really big eater and they will finish all that off easily. I didn't want to throw it out. There were also dozens of cookies. I kept enough for DH of the ones he likes. I was not perfect, but I'm glad I didn't gain over Christmas. I want to keep myself on track. I didn't want to gain pounds that I would have to lose all over again in 2016. Starting off with a new slate. |
Carol Sue I didn't gain any weight either. I am right with my ticker this morning so I decided to start back OP. I had my bullet coffee this morning with the whey powder for breakfast. We didn't go to church this morning, but we still plan to have our Sunday breakfast for lunch today.
I found CAD group on FB and I've decided to do CAD. I like the freedom of the original CAD book. There is a lady on there who has gotten out of the 300s doing CAD. She explained how she did it. If you look it up, read Allie/Oriana conversation on there. That is pretty much the way I did CAD successfully at one time, but felt I was doing it wrong and stopped. Since I know I am not a VLC person, I believe I can do CAD with no problem. Good job getting rid of the leftovers. I have a few things that I'm going to ditch myself. Mainly the sweets. Even DH FBS is up and he takes a lot of meds to keep it where it is. Have a blessed day. |
Trish, I hope CAD works for you and you are able to still keep your BG down. I have a dilemma right now as I looked at my blood-work from the last 2 times and noticed that my BUN/Creatinine ratio was a little high both times. I don't think he checked that this time so it won't be on the report I get from him to compare. But that indicates a problem with kidney function, and from what I read online I should be watching my protein intake. So I have to cut protein for my kidneys, cut carbs for my blood sugar, and there's not a whole lot left to eat. LOL My doctor didn't mention it, probably because it was just slightly high, but when my glucose was slightly high he didn't mention it either and I would have been better off if he did. Maybe it wouldn't have become full blown diabetes. I might be one of these people who has to eat just salads and vegetables in order to be healthy. Sometimes I wish I didn't know so much and just eat whatever I feel like and not care.

Carol Sue I guess I'm not doing true CAD because I'm eating 2 carb meals instead of one. I think the idea of eating carbs and calling it a Reward Meal is a problem for me. I think that would make me want a reward all the time. The girl that has gotten under 300 lbs says there are days she has 2 RM and she still calls it CAD. So I consider myself doing a CAD type plan, but not actually CAD.
My FBS is still too high, but I'm going for weight loss right now. I've worked at getting the FBS corrected 1st, but now I believe that when I get back to the regular exercise again and get weight below 200 lbs that the blood sugar will come down and take care of itself. I'm beginning to think that maybe I've been working at this the wrong way... maybe backwards. I was so surprised that my WI today was down 2.4 lbs this week. I will soon be out of the 230s. I read once that women have to be careful getting too much protein. I know that if I eat too much I get tired of it. So I'm working at a more balanced way of eating. I think you can low carb and eat a little more veggies and a little less protein. I think both are important but I'm not sure we need loads of protein. I personally think we know what to do and now we are tweaking. I've just about got my plan exactly like I want it. Have a good day. |
