Trish, money is what made me quit WW, too. I remember going when it was $1 per week! LOL Just showed my age. Between WW and Dr Fuhrman, that is where I got my love of lots of veggies, and I notice when I veer off from that habit, my weight goes up. Fruits not so much. I have never been a big fruit lover and when I do eat it my BS goes up unless I have a teeny portion. A whole piece of fruit is too much. Lately DH has been eating a lot of oranges and Halos. He breaks off a few sections for me, and that's just right. One of the first things I learned as a child is that it's nice to share! LOL

Trish, yesterday I spend some time online reading about studies they did about exercise for Insulin Resistance. There were a lot of technical terms that I didn't really understand, but at the end of each they had a summary that was more in layman's terms. It explained what changes take place in your body as a result of exercise. It made me want to go downstairs and exercise! LOL What I got out of it is that moderate exercise is better for Insulin Resistance than high intensity, and it should be done regularly, as the benefit starts to decline after 36 hours. This was only in relationship to Insulin Resistance, and not weight loss. Weight loss depends on dietary changes, but dietary changes alone won't affect Insulin Resistance the way exercise does.
Trish, I think I have that book...it sounds familiar. I think I need to clean out my room where I store my books so I know what I have and get rid of some I no longer want. I think I did that once before and then had to buy a book over again when I wanted it again. Stupid move. I keep thinking that when I die, they will find all these "diet book" and wonder why none of them ever worked. I guess I need to quit reading these books and go back to the first time I lost weight. I didn't know anything about any diets. I just ate less and exercised. Isn't that what we've been hearing all along?' Also, I have a big cookbook collection. I have a lot of them from the Public TV station. I need to make a list of what I have so I don't end up with duplicates. If I am first to go, my poor DH is going to have to deal with all these books. And if he goes first, I will have to deal with all his junk in the basement. I told him I will just bring in a dumpster. LOL I have been eating a lot of carbs the past week or so. My BS is up, and I'm taking way too much Glimiperide. I made a vow that today is the day I will get back in the low carb groove, but I still have 2 bagels left. LOL Once they are gone, I will steer clear of them. I do not have it in me to toss them out. It would take everything I have to put them down the garbage disposal, which is where they belong. They are a bread product, which I KNOW is my weakness! But they are so good. Toasted. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Yum. |
HI everyone:
My administrator Cynthia died on Thursday, so she didn't linger too long after I saw her last, which was Wednesday afternoon, when she was sometimes conscious and responsive to us. Funeral is Tuesday, and her family, who are not very well off, have allowed us to take care of the catering for the reception after ward. As you may know about me, I am ever the practical one, and we did order some flower too, because Cynthia loves flowers, but I also wanted to do something practical, and am happy the family allowed it. I Spent Friday night out with my sister, she picked me up and we drove to a hotel out of town, went out for supper and to a rock concert. Used may points for the wine and beer. I guess thats the good thing about this plan, is that I have simply used up flex points for that. I don't have to say (or think) that I went off plan or anything. (unless I keep doing that all week). Makes it psychologically easier, anyhow. Still having quite a bit of pain, it was better for a while midweek and I hoped I was on the mend, but got worse again Thursday, and still not so good. The idea to avoid driving for the weekend was good, but just sitting in the car seemed to be a problem. I am going out for a walk today regardless, as resting more doesn't seem to help at all. Trish, I can understand the reasoning about ww and fruits and veggies, from both ways. Counting them to keep you honest and be sure of what you are taking in, and leaving them as free, to encourage you to fill up on "free" foods. I find some fruits are worse than others for my BS, so I stick to apples, and berries. Melon also doesn't raise my sugars but I don't care for it much. I love pineapple, but it definitely affects my BS. But as free foods, most veggies work well, as long as we don't slather with butter or dressings etc. Thats my downfall. The smart points system also wants you to have some healthy fats, but you must count those points. Think of swapping fats for sugars, and low sugar allows you to have more fat. (or thats what I do anyhow. |
Mad, I am sorry to hear that your friend passed away but glad that her suffering is over. I'm sure it makes you feel good that you are able to contribute by helping with the luncheon afterward.
I am also sorry to hear that you're still having so much pain. I wish you could find a solution. You are too young to be feeling this way. Trish, I found my book, Eat Fat Get Thin, but it is by Barry Groves and was written in 1999. High Fat eating has been around a long time. I wonder how different this book is from the one by Mark Hyman, which is new. After looking for that book I am so amazed at the number of books I have. It's rediculous. I am definately going to have to sort through them and donate some of them. It is so easy and inexpensive to pick these books up at Goodwill since they are usually only $1, but those dollars add up, and if I'm not reading them or getting any benefit from them it's foolish to keep them. And I am going to have to stop buying them. |
I'm sorry for your loss Mad

Mad,
I'm so sorry to hear of Cynthia's passing, though I'm glad she didn't suffer long. I'm also very glad that she had such supportive friends/coworkers. I wish you all peace. |
Here is a link to an article by Dr. Hyman. Finally more doctor's are seeing the truth of low carb. I am amazed at what I'm learning out of his new book Eat Fat Get Thin. I've been reading some to DH and he wants to know what we can eat. We just may end up eating low carb high fat together. I'm amazed that in the 20s that they treated diabetes with a high fat 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% carb diet. As far as I can tell Dr. Hyman recommends more than 50% fat. I thought of you Carol Sue because he eats 4 veggies with his protein at dinner time.

FBS was a stunning 4.7 this am. Really pleased. thats 85 to you in the USA. I realized I have been getting lax with my bedtime snacks while tracking points. The 5.5's I was getting weren't bad, but I wanted better, so I followed my own advice and had a small snack before bed. And thats the results. Will keep tracking for another week or so, and build that into my point allocations in the future.
on another topic: whether we are doing low carb or calorie counting etc. having more vegetables with our main course is wise. If we are still hungry after our usual servings, filling up on another bowl of salad or serving of beans is better for us than bread or potatoes or pasta or other higher carb foods. No one will go wrong on that one. It is looking to be fairly warm here today, at least above freezing, and spring is here. Forecast for the next 2 weeks has it above freezing every day for the next 2 weeks. Trail walks all around! have a good Monday everyone |
Mad, I have never had a fasting BS like yours since I was diagnosed. What have you been eating for your evening snack, and is that the only thing you eat after dinner? I found that a small snack at bedtime helps, but still doesn't get my FBG as low as yours. Also, do you check BS at bedtime?
Trish, I was very concerned when you said you were going to go back to high fat. You have tried that in the past and quit after a few days because it didn't not work for you. WW seemed to be working so well for you and you stayed on it the longest and showed a good loss with it. I didn't understand why you would quit that and go back to higher fat. Now that I read the link you provided, his plan is not necessarily the high fat that is so popular with so many low carb followers. They pile on the sat fat and eliminate most veggies. I could not do that, and I don't think you would last long on that, either. His is a plan that I tend to aim for, but sometimes fall way by the wayside, but then I head back there, as it seems to be mostly food that I like. I just have a real hard time with portion control. Maybe now that WW taught you more about portion control you will do well with this plan. I hope so. I want to see all of us succeed. |
