Hi Jerie, Missing you over at IE. Is that book you are reading by Geneen Roth? She writes some things like that. Maybe I should read it, too. I'm not diabetic but I take prednisone so sometimes I'm concerned. I guess prednisone can bring on diabetes.

Carol . . . . . . Nice of you to drop in.

To the best of my knowledge no drug can actually 'bring on Diabetes'. Some of the side effects of Prednisone can mimic some of the symptoms of Diabetes however. Additionally, since Prednisone can tend to increase fat deposits and too much fat (especially around the middle) can hasten the onset of Insulin Resistance, I can understand your confusion. If you have any real concerns about Diabetes, I suggest that you discuss blood tests with your doctor to be on the safe side.

The most commonly encountered side effects of Prednisone are listed below; I've italicized some that are quite similar to symptoms of Type II Diabetes:

Sodium retention
Increased appetite
Increased fat deposits
Increased acid in your stomach
Increased sweating, especially at night
Increased hair growth
Acne on the face, back, and chest
Bone and muscle problems
Growth problems in children
Eye (vision) problems
Increased sugar in the blood
Increased sensitivity to the sun
Delayed wound healing
Decreased ability to fight infection
Thrush (Candida) growth in the mouth (or any yeast infections)

The idea of a semi-fast (even medically supervised) for a Diabetic scares me a bit. But, I do know that one of our regulars has been successful that way without ill effects. Good Luck.

Hey everyone! So, true story: I got hit by a car yesterday!! The good news is that I didn't break, fracture, or sprain anything - I just got a little banged, scratched, and bruised up. The lady who hit me was rushing her dog to the vet because he got attacked by a pitbull, and she started crying that she hit me, so I told her to calm down, and I gave her a hug. The hit jacked my bike up big time, SO she bought me another bike, got me patched up at the vet's office, and we went our separate ways. She was sincerely a quite nice person, and I got another (also used, but really attractive) road bike.

What else? I've been in this tired funk lately about work and life, and slowly becoming a temporarily sarcastic and bitter person. I'm normally not; no one enjoys being around such negative energy. I've hit a plateau, which also does not help very much. SO, in order to bust the plateau, I'm eating 1200-1400 calories (as opposed to the 1500-1800 that I was eating before) and running 3x a week, as per the Couch to 5K program's guidelines. I DAMN WELL BETTER LOSE WEIGHT!!

Mickey: WTFx8!! 500 calories a day? THAT is ridiculous. It IS naturally harder to lose weight as a diabetic on insulin, because the insulin absorbs the fat... and taking insulin injections promotes belly fat. <--But THAT is why I REFUSE to inject in my stomach! There has to be a better way to lose weight than pure starvation... I find it a little nuts that your doc proposed for you to do that. Maybe you should try Alli. I know it has some... unpleasant... side effects if you mess up, but maybe it will help speed things up for you.

Holy Crap, are you okay how are you feeling today? you're lucky to be alive!! and I must say you sure are a good sport about being hit, and showing sympathy for the lady who did it. All this and your normal good humour goes against your theory that you are becoming a sarcastic and bitter person. I don't think it's possible Did the lady's dog survive?

You'll break through your plateau soon (or you could wait for me to catchup with you )

At least 8. Mickey, how well do you know this doc? I don't think this diet sounds safe, you need a minimal caloric intake just to function properly. 400 calories won't be good for your brain, heart, lungs, bladder, liver etc... losing weight is not worth making your body weak.

Default Battle wounds

I decided to take some pics of my battle wounds (that I got from being hit by a car). In order to prevent annoyance and scrolling, I've uploaded them as thumbnails (you can click to enlarge them), then added a picture of my face that I took today... just for the **** of it.

Thin - thank you for your kind words. As for how I'm feeling - I'm actually fine, and now that I woke up some, I'm not nearly as bitter or tired as I was this morning. The weekend is coming at the end of the day, so I'm my normal positive self again. I'm just... not generally a morning person, so working the schedule I have is very stressful and difficult for me. And oh - the lady's dog is fine.

Morning all. I'm not discussing bsl or weather today - too depressing.

Carol - I've been on several kinds of long-lasting insulin, and I love the 24 hour ones. I use Lantus - it doesn't have the peaks and valleys you have with something like NPH. I think there is a long-lasting one called Ultra-Lente, but I don't know anything about it.

Meowee - thanks for the articles. Sounds like you may have something there with your nighttime shot.

I hear you guys about not being able to remember if you took meds or not. I do take other pills besides stuff for diabetes, so I use one of those things that has a space for every day. That way I know I've taken the pills. But insulin is another matter for me. Sometimes I'll sit down to eat & not be able to remember if I took a shot or not. I actually did that yesterday at breakfast. Ended up deciding I hadn't so took one - and I was wrong. Got to have a big glass of juice after breakfast. I was reading in a diabetes magazine about how many incidents ER's are having, especially with older people, about mixing up their vials and taking doses of short acting insulin of as many units they take of their long acting. I take 100 units of Lantus, and it would probably be close to fatal if I took that much of humalog. So that is one thing I am trying to be particularly careful about. Any of the insulin takers here ever done anything like using the wrong vial??

Oh Mickey - don't think I could manage 500 cals for that long. Good luck. When is your surgery?

Carol - the book is by Jane Hirshmann & Carol Munter (who also wrote "Overcoming Overeating".

Cassandra - good luck on your job search. I've never eaten lamb so that recipe would not tempt me either.

Shane - thank goodness you came out of that bike accident relatively unscathed. Plateaues are a pain in the arse. Don't give up hope - at least you are not gaining. Sometimes your body has to rest & catch up a little bit when you are losing.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

LOL...

That kind of reminds me of a time when I went to Publix to pick up crab legs. I was waiting in line for mine to be steamed, and this lady in the line in front of me said, "Your hair is standing STRAIGHT up. Did you know that?" I laughed. She said, "I'm serious... look in the mirror. It's standing STRAIGHT UP!" I told her it was intentional. She said, "oh, oh, ok!"

Cool

Hi, all. Friday at last. Overcast, cool here. Fine with me. Still not able to control eating. Sigh.
Shane - You handled that scary accident very magnanimously. Glad nothing was broken.
Mickey - You should do fine on the 500 calorie program as long as your doctor does regular testing and hopefully prescribes potassium for you to take. I lost 80 lbs on such a program. It takes some getting used to, but I was rarely hungry. My problem with food is emotional and I have been very stressed the past year, so I couldn't stay on the program. Am trying to go back on a modified version of it.
Happy weekend to all. I'm off to a Neil Sedaka concert tonight. (You older chickies will know who he is.)

Shane Dudette, glad to hear you're ok and all that! Man! when I got hit by a SUV a couple years ago I was out of the game (the game of general movement) for about a week lol. Hope you're not in too much pain or getting into any more trouble! lol

I've been out all day today, went of a job interview this morning and got a call at about 2:30pm telling me I got the job...YAY! hopefully this one's a keeper, even if its a 6 month contract, temp to perm type thing. Makes my bsl happy ^-^

Shane ~ LOL, see what you said about being sarcastic & bitter just doesn't hold water - you could have blasted me for mentioning your hair. I just don't buy it, you're a sweetheart through and through

I'm like June Cleaver from Leave it to Beaver, dresses, heels and pearls and my hair never sticks up, Ward wouldn't like that.

rosettastone ~- what did you eat everyday on 500 calories a day? weren't you starving all the time? I can't imagine.

Cool

Thin - I went through a medically supervised weight loss program. We had meal replacements - shakes, bars, soups, soy-based sloppy joes in 100 and 150 calorie portions. I was rarely hungry. If you were really hungry you could have extra shakes. I also attended a weekly meeting with a physical exam, weigh-in and a behaviorist (in a group). I am trying to get back on a modified program combining meal replacements and lean cuisine.
