Smile I wanna move it, move it, all year long!

You can challenge yourself to daily, weekly, monthly & definitely yearly miles. I enjoy having both daily and yearly goals. It's easy to keep track of and it keeps me motivated to keep moving through the winter months & lazy periods. I wear my fitbit all day long and record both exercise plus daily movement (but you can record whatever you want to).

My daily goal is 10,000 steps or 4.5 miles (I post these on my home calendar).

My yearly goal will be 1,642 miles, which for me is 10,000 steps a day x 365 days (which I will make a 2018 ticker for and update total miles for the year several times per month throughout the year).

Join us anytime in 2018, have fun & KEEP MOVING!

Yay! Thank you for starting this!

My goals:

*To try and maintain momentum in the 2nd half of the year ~ I tend to tail off!

*To walk 1460 miles ~ this is my 10,000 steps a day, which = 4 miles - I have short legs!!

*To make the 4 miles/10,000 steps a daily average, not a daily requirement ~ I have a tendency to get obsessive if I miss the daily target (I won't sleep right being the main worry, even tho' experience tells me that's not true), so one of my goals for 2018 is not to be too anxious about it!

Thank you very much for getting this going

Stop Press!
It's been 3 years since my last Pup crossed the Bridge, and, finally, I've decided it's Time to get a new canine companion!

I've applied for a rescue dog, and am waiting to hear from the kennels, and to get permission from my landlords to have a pet. Please keep everything crossed for me, and for the Pup in question ~ and here's hoping he and I inspire each other to even more walking!!!

Rosinante and Tabbycat So good to see you both will be continuing to challenge yourselves to yearly movement goals. I definitely need a group to be accountable to .

Rosinante, I am thrilled for you to be getting a dog after 3 years without. It's been almost one for us and not ready yet. May you both be inspiration for each other. While I'm sure riding my incumbent bike to get to goal miles is not hurting me, I concure that it seems a bit obsessive (to me also). I sure wish I could get into my exercise dvd's and weight lifting again, although some of these don't tally a lot of steps.

Tabbycat, does this mean you can walk outside all year round? That would be wonderful. Today we have ice on cement surfaces outside plus freezing temps., so I am trying to motivate myself to dance to music today. I can relate to your intentional exercise varying month to month

C7KB, & to this thread. 800 walking miles is a great goal. Hoping your strength training every other day rubs off onto me, hee, hee. I would benefit from this and haven't been able to start a winter routine of it yet, .

Diana, I live on the Texas coast, so not much of a problem walking in winter. If anything, the summer months can be hazardous when it is hot and humid and the heat index can be well over 100 degrees. So yes, I can pretty much walk all year. In the summer I can use the treadmill at the senior center when it's dangerously hot outside.

I made my 2017 goal of 2017 miles for 2017, whew! Adjusted my ticker back to 0 for 2018, only 1,642 miles to go starting Jan 1st, 2018.

C7KB, I can appreciate sneaking up on your full program, it sounds great. I would like to add in yoga or stretching, plus sit ups, plus weight lifting. A little at a time, plus being motivated by what others like you are doing should help.

Tabbycat, I went to college in Florida, so can understand the 9 mths outside and summers inside. That sounds wonderful, living on the Texas coast. Wish we could move south after retiring, but to DH this is home. We are trying to figure out if winter trips south would be satifying.

About 5 years ago I was a very avid . I wasn't a great runner, merely competent. I did local races and felt really good about my overall health. And I didn't pick up running to lose weight. I had lost nearly 50 pounds through a reasonable eating plan and lots and lots of walking prior to running. I started running because I could. Flash forward to a job promotion and supervising people and I have regained a lot of weight. Not all of it, but too much.

My goal this year is to return to running. It's not going to happen fast or overnight, but for the first time in very long time I want to do this. I've set my mileage for 1,600 miles for 2018 and if at least a significant portion are running miles, I'd considerate a complete win.

This is a great thread and I'm happy to be part of it. Here's to us and all of 2018 goals!

So, building up gradually after a shocking slump for a fortnight ~ ate like a waste disposal, loved every bite.
Had a lie-in most mornings (very unusual for me) ~ loved every laze.

Aiming for my half target of 5,000 steps today, and to eat like a normal human. Can't go totally salady as have a friend coming for lunch, and I've made my Mum's New Year special of Steak and Kidney Pie and Trifle!!

Good luck, everyone

Happy 2018 Chicks!

C7KB, Thanks, I rode an incumbent bike when I am behind on miles, so they are easier miles, but miles non the less. I have made an exercise plan for 2018 and today did lifting for 1/2 hour, whew. Still want to do 1/2 hour of aerobics, but wondering what to do if I don't make my personal goal of 10,000 step/day?

Curvy, I salute and support each step of your awesome running goal! Will you keep a separate miles run total? I love your CAN DO attitude.

Rosinante, LOL, can relate to "and to eat like a normal human". I have to retrain my holiday sweet tooth. Your special lunch with friend sounds delish, trifles are wonderful.

Curvy, that's great that you are getting back to running. I was a late-in-life runner myself, never won first place but my goal was to finish in the top half of my age group (over 50). It took two years of running before I absolutely loved it, but then my osteoarthritis led to a hip replacement, and doctors advise against the impact of jogging. So I'm trying hard to embrace fast walking instead. I actually did get a third place medal last September by walking a 5K in 43 minutes. I'd like to walk a half-marathon, but (TMI) whenever I walk fast for over an hour I get a bleeding hemorrhoid. If I can figure out how to deal with that, I'll seriously work toward walking a half.

Workinglikeadog and Tabbycat: Thank your for your kind words and support. I really appreciate it! Tabbycat, I seem to remember (at least I think I do) your running days. I'm very impressed; I've never placed in any race. I'm sorry to hear about your osteoarthritis and hip replacement but you're determined and it sounds like you are finding a work around to . Good luck with your continued training and walking goals.
