saramommy-The water is to help your body work properly. Since every organ in your body passes things in and out through fluid, it allows those organs to work properly/more efficiently. Along that same line, you need it to stay regular so your waste (solid and liquid) can pass through your digestive system and be expelled properly. Also, dehydration/not enough water makes your body think you have lack of water supply, so it'll hold on to what you have and you'll have water retention.
