I went for what ended up being a 6 mile walk today with a friend, so that brings my total to 40.5, meaning I've met my pre-Alaska goal with a day to spare and anything I do tomorrow is gravy! (Which is nice, because I still have to do laundry, run a billion errands, submit a few more job applications and, of course, pack).

Headed to bed now...great day, girls!

Bigknitter 06-16-2009 11:41 PM

Okay so I have a quick story about my "run" last night. I run off and on, but haven't lately. So, my 9 y/o DS asks me if I'll do a 24 lap race with him around my in-laws house (big ranch-style house). I said "Sure, why not"-no enthusiasm, but trying to model healthy behavior. This is at about 4:45 in the afternoon, so my energy is NOT at its peak. Anyway, we walk a warm-up lap and then the race begins. As you might expect it was much like the tortoise and the hare from Aesop's fables (me being the tortoise, of course). Long story short, I ran the entire race...slow and steady...and ended up beating him by 4 laps. I walked his final laps with him to cool down and we talked about how it can be better to run slow and steady than to run like crazy at first and run out of energy. I was also really proud of him for finishing and not giving up just because I'd already finished, so I told him that too. It was fun quality time and felt great to be able to run what amounted to 1.25 miles (I calculated it based on the house's dimensions) and then walk for another .25 miles on either side of the "race". I love my DS! He really loves to push me to keep up with him and his ideas...gotta love that energy!

Jacqui_D 06-17-2009 09:06 AM

Ican, CONGRATS on meeting your pre-Alaska trip goal!!!! I knew you could do it!!! :carrot:

Gator, yesterday when I was at the gym, I was walking by a class and they had the resistance bands tied around their thighs and were marching in place and doing front, back, and side leg lifts. :exercise:

Sotypical, when you do post, your tiny little notes next to your exercise are funny. :D And it looks like you are doing great on your exercise! Keep it up! :cp:

Bigknitter, your exercise looks great too! You really jumped into this with both feet! Great job! :spin:

Ms_P, I definitely think you should count your golf minutes. I think any sport should count as exercise!

Blondie, were you able to sneak in some exercise last night? It looks like you have some room to play with as far as time each week with your goals (unlike me last month when I had myself exercising every single day so if I missed a day, I blew my goal). So if you didn't get the exercise in yesterday, hopefully you can still work it in this week. :lifter:

CMof4, I am so proud of you for staying so dedicated to your new HIIT this month! You are doing so great! I bet it feels so good to realize what you are capable of doing now! And you are doing it, girl!! Woohoo! :carrot:

And of course, Delphi and Joci, you are the reigning queens of committed exercise on here, lol! Keep it up ladies! Love your pics, Delphi! And can't wait to see yours, Joci! You girls are an inspiration! :cp:

T_Girl, you are doing great, and did I read that you have some pics out too? How did I miss those? Where can I find them? I love to see everyone's progress! I wish I had thought about taking progress pics all along.

Glutio, walking is cardio, biking is cardio. I definitely think you can substitute biking miles for walking miles, no problem! In fact, if you'd like for me to change your goal on the list from "Walk 5 miles per week for a total of 20 miles" to "Complete 20 miles" or something similar, just let me know!

NSM, I am so proud of you for always digging deep to pull off a day of exercise even when you don't feel like it, but also recognizing if you truly do need a day off! Did you decide to take the day off yesterday after all? I kept telling myself on Monday that I needed to get to the gym, but I don't know, I just couldn't do it and yesterday when I did get there (thanks in part to your watchfulness! :)), I felt much better! So sometimes (only sometimes!) a day off is a good idea. You are doing wonderfully, girl! :carrot:

FSA, Lewis, Terapet, Pas, Wifey, Lumi, Looking, Dolliepie and to all our ladies a big hello  and hug !! For those of you who haven't posted in while, we'd love an update!

As for me, I am feeling on the upswing today, thank goodness! :cp: Hopefully, it will continue and my down mood will be behind me for good! And now I have to go eat some breakfast and then get over to the sister thread and see if I can get some personals in before starting my exercise today! And then I have to start cleaning the house! Oh my, I am so behind! :fr:

Ms Perception 06-17-2009 09:34 AM

Thanks, Tummygirl. It was a surprise workout that probably helped me drop a little weight this morning.
Jacqui-I have done sprint triathlons in the past, so somewhere deep down there is that level of fitness, but it's been quite a while since I've run any more than a quick jog. I was thrilled to be able to do it and it's encouraged me to finally get back to some running! That'll be part of my July goals.

Jacqui: I am sooo glad to hear that you are feeling better today. I cannot tell you how proud of you I am for getting into the Y even when you didn't want to. Thanks your comments too. As I told everyone last month when I joined the challenges, exercise is the toughest part for me, and from past experience, I know that 1 day of slacking off can lead to 2 and that leads to a month. I have to force myself to keep exercising regularly to prevent me from going off the deep end.

Gator: I found this for you: http://www.zenathletics.com/pdfs/Poster_FLEX_BANDS.pdf . you can also tie the thing around your ankles and work your thighs by lifting your leg sideways and bringing back to center.

Ms. P: Congrats on the run and for setting a good example for your son. One of my goals and my reasons for getting healthy now is to be a good role model for my kids when I have them and hopefully prevent them from all the suffering I've gone through.

Pas: Good for you for coming and posting even when you didn't get your exercise in, that sure keeps you accountable, now get back in the wagon girly!

Tummy, Lewis, Delphi: Good job!

I swapped the band for my workout in the Active for a stronger one (I got a set of 3 new ones, this is the middle one). It made a big difference and I am sure my shoulders will be sore tomorrow (front arm raises are not my strong suit LOL) but I would really like to start seeing some muscle definition one of these months he he.

June 1: EA Active Workout 22 min. + 30 min free step = 52 min.
June 2: EA Active Workout 24 min. + 30 min. walk = 54 min.
June 3: WL Yoga and abs = 45 min.
June 4: EA Active 24 min.
June 5: rest
June 6: EA Active 28 min.
June 7: 0

June 8: EA Active 25 min.
June 9: EA Active 34 min. + 30 min. Walk = 64 min.
June 10: Rest
June 11: EA Active 18 min + Wii free step 30 min: 48 min.
June 12: EA Active 28 min.
June 13: Wii Fit aerobics 30 min.
June 14: EA Active 30 min.

June 15: EA Active 28 min + Walk 20 min. = 48 min.
June 16: Rest
June 17: EA Active 19 min. + Wii fit aer. 20 min. + Wii yoga 10 min. = 39 min.

T_Girl, look at you rocking an hourglass figure!! Woohoo!! What a difference you have already made! It must feel good! Great job! :yay:

NSM, aw girl, you're so sweet! And I can totally relate to exercise being the hardest part and if you slack just one day, you are in danger of slacking more and more. That's why people like you and me are so lucky to have this thread! Thanks FSA! (I may have started the exercise thread this month and may keep the lists to help her out, but these monthly threads are FSA's babies!)

Looking, you are exercising despite TOM and that's what counts! Good for you! :cp:

Just wondering for those of you who put 60 minutes cardio on your daily list of exercise, is that 60 minutes one thing or many things? I am so close to doing the Arc Trainer for an hour....made it to 56 min today. If you can believe it, I could have done the last 4 minutes but if I had, I would have been late to pilates.

Was just wondering if folks do more then one kind of cardio and then lump it together as one amount of time.

Thanks
J

Jacqui_D 06-17-2009 07:59 PM

Joci, I did not put 60 min of cardio, but I did put 60 min of exercise and meant cardio. For me, it may be one thing for an hour or it could be multiple things to equal an hour. Of course, any cardio I'm referring to is not hardcore like so many of the rest of you do! I walk, I ride my recumbent bike, I have a health rider that I may start using, and I keep trying to talk myself into going swimming at the Y (but I'm just not ready to don a swimsuit yet)!

Delphi 06-17-2009 07:59 PM

Jacque ~ My sixty minutes is fluent, whether on the fitness coach or treadmill. ;)

Jacque9999 06-17-2009 08:07 PM

Delphi and Jacqui

Thanks for your response. I don't know why I was so curious about it. I really wish I could be consistent and do 60 minutes straight. I either don't have enough time or just can't do one thing for that long and have to switch it up. On the AT today, for 56 minutes, it said I burned 570 calories, Lose It said 550. So either way, that was alot..and 56 minutes well spent!!!

Delphi 06-17-2009 08:51 PM

I wish I could burn that many calories. That is why my durations are so long, because at my level, I can't burn enough calories in a shorter amount of time. Hopefully, when I get that elliptical, I will though. I know if I start running I could, but my dang knees just wont let me. :(

Pas de Chaton 06-17-2009 09:24 PM

Jacqui, I'm so glad you had a good day!! And hope the rest of June is filled with them. You deserve it! hugs : )

I didn't get much exercise in today, between laundry, packing, cleaning, etc. I'm flying to Anchorage tomorrow, and won't be back till July 7. I'm very excited! I love traveling, but it does wreck havoc on my fitness routine. I've actually realized one of the reasons I haven't been running as regularly as I like is because I knew my running fitness would suffer on this trip...hopefully I'll start properly training for 10ks when I get back.

Best of luck to all you ladies, with the rest of June and the beginning of July! I'll think of all the hard work you're doing and use it as inspiration to keep myself moving on my trip. See you all in July! xoxo

I helped my mom do some landscaping yesterday. She got this really nice stone edging to put around a couple of her large flower beds, so I did one of the beds for her while she worked on the other. Lots of digging, yanking out grass, moving the stones, etc. A nice little workout..then we went for a walk. My mom really wants to improve her health, but she is SO busy it's a real challenge. When I'm there we always go for a walk or try to think of ways to make it easier for her to be healthy. My dad has been losing weight, but he still eats pretty badly sometimes and doesn't do a lot of exercise. It makes it harder for my mom to do it with him because it's so much easier for him apparently. Anyway, same old story of trying to get the spouse on board or work around them!

Tummy Girl 06-18-2009 05:39 PM

Jacque - I do 60 minutes on my elliptical on full incline and at tension 6 right now. Supposedly, I'm burning about 750-800 cal per session according to the readouts depending on how consistently I can keep it at 6k/hr. I was doing that everyday but I can't go much faster or I'm sure I'd fall off the darn thing and any higher tension at the moment and I probably won't be able to move my feet very long. Hence the running, I can manage 30 minutes now but I will be working up to 60 minutes over time to try and challenge myself a bit more. I do change my music a lot, usually twice a week and that keeps my going on the elliptical especially, I just concentrate on what I'm listening to and usually it goes by pretty quick.

Jacqui - Thanks so much, you're very sweet. I do feel pretty blessed with my shape, I just wish I didn't insist on pilling flubber onto an otherwise very delightful frame. Oh well, that's over now and I look forward to seeing if it's as delightful as I remember.

WEEK 1:
June 1: 42 minutes Cardio; 45 minutes Strength Training
June 2: 34 minutes Cardio
June 3: 35 minutes Cardio; 60 minutes Strength Training
June 4: 96 minutes Cardio

June 10: 61 minutes Cardio
June 11: 50 minutes Cardio
June 12: 52 minutes Cardio; 60 minutes Strength Training

Ican, thank you! You're such a sweetheart! Have a wonderful, exciting trip!! I'll be thinking of you! I hope you have an amazing time!! :carrot:

Ms_P, it's so nice that you got out for a walk with your mom and wonderful that she wants to watch her weight. Your dad sounds just like my DH! Lol! It's so frustrating the weight loss that men get away with when we have to bust our rears for the same results! Oh well! I'm glad you had a good day! :)

T_Girl, yes, that's how I feel about my shape too. It's more pear-shaped, but you know J-Lo made that an acceptable shape now, so I don't dread it like I did when I was young. I kind of relish it now, and I'm looking forward to getting it back to the size it should be!

NSM, I'm glad you are going to concentrate on lower body tomorrow. Shoulders really can be touchy and I would hate to see you damage it! So good for you knowing when to rest it!

Well ladies, I have to get some strength training in now!
