I really think that height, age, body shape have alot to do with clothing size. Also, I think there are people out there (not necessarily on this thread) that wear clothes that are really too small for them. I used to do that when I was younger, but now it is just too uncomfortable!
This is a frustrating subject for me, too. I am 48, I am 5'3" and have always been stocky, even when I was in my 130's back in my twenties. Currently, I weigh 166 pounds. I am wearing anything from a 12/14 (elastic waist shorts) to some of my summer clothing that are 1X (size 18-20). I had secretly hoped my summer clothes would all be too big, but being knits and elastic waist makes them still fit.

That is really a good thing, because I can't afford to buy new things right now. I have bought a few smaller things, but it still makes me cringe to put on my 1X stretchy shorts when I want all new smaller things. I'll eventually have to buy all new things and also new scrubs for work...they are getting really big!
