"Just Beachy" Black Team Chat #6

Since Julz is away, thought I would set up the chat thread for the Black Team after yesterday's server crash. I'm keeping with some of the other teams in that they start a new chat thread for each week of the challenge - even if they didn't get to 500 posts in a week. So here we are at 6.

Scan the posts in the Biggest Loser section - there are several comments referring to the lost posts for the Exercise and other side challenges.

And just in case you didn't hear otherwise, the 3FC server suffered a crash in the wee hours of Friday morning. Suzanne tried to recover lost data but posts and updates after May 23 were lost forever. Just like after a big storm, our community at 3FC is rallying around to rebuild things. So on with the challenge...

ChopperChick355 06-07-2008 10:17 AM

Wow I never had a chance to log on yesterday. That is bad news last 2 weeks lost but I guess it really could be worse. As stated in Suzannes message at least that were able to save the last 10 years of information and only lost 2 weeks.

Well we have rain all over in the forcast again today really getting tired of all the rain.:(

Well hope everyone has a great day!

ggmugsy 06-07-2008 12:02 PM

WOW!

I'm just glad we're up and running again!! :)

Hope everybody is having a safe and healthy weekend.

ggmugsy 06-07-2008 12:04 PM

And don't forget . . . today is the pushup challenge!! One point for every pushup!!

ChopperChick355 06-07-2008 12:20 PM

Thanks for reminding me I forgot about the push up challenge today I better get to work

ggmugsy 06-07-2008 06:05 PM

happy2bme & Reda . . . it looks like it's just the 3 of us. OMG. Where IS everybody??

In case anybody pops in here, I went ahead and started the Beach Buddies Exercise thread again. Hopefully we can rebuild!!

theresia 06-07-2008 06:25 PM

Hi everyone, just checking in, I've been very busy this last week, I'll move next week so I have no time for internet..

just keep swimming 06-07-2008 06:46 PM

Hi all! I graduated college this morning! :D OK, I'm done patting myself on the back now. :)

Unfortunately, this last week has not been great food-wise, and this next week will probably be one big party too, but I'm basically focusing on maintaining my good habits and hopefully losing a little as well, and then getting fully back on track the next week, and hopefully seeing a big loss then. So here's to staying in control this week.

Have a great weekend, everybody... wherever you are... ;)

jenjen 06-07-2008 06:49 PM

Hey Black Team,

I'm around. I'm down 2 pounds--the pound I gained last week and another pound, so I'm stoked.

I'll update the exercise buddy thread. Luckily, I have it all written down in a little notebook---along w/calories.

I just got through a double-feature: Sex & the City and The Strangers....strange combination, I know. Been a somewhat lazy day though. Guess I need to get a start on laundry. What an exciting Saturday night for me.

Have a great weekend, gang!

happy2bme 06-07-2008 11:50 PM

:congrat: on your graduation Jessica! Enjoy your celebrations, just try and make some decent choices - not perfect, not sinful, just a little bit better than your first instincts.

and a :yay: for you jenjen on losing the pounds. What did you think of The Strangers? Heard that was disappointing.

well I didn't forget about the jumping jack challenge but was out and about all day today so I couldn't easily get into it. Tried it at home but the house shook too much and DH wanted to know what was going on :o  Just kiddin'

ggmugsy - to your question --- I think summer makes for the the most difficult BL challenge. It's getting near that time when people are heading out for the week or even the weekend to enjoy the better weather. And it's interesting that several people have posted that with 3FC down for a day, they actually got away from the computer and tackled other things in life.

I know that when some of my favorite TV shows finished for the season in the spring, I said I was NOT going to get hooked into the summer replacement shows. Well maybe except for The Mole which I have been waiting to return for like 2 or 3 years. However without Anderson Cooper as the host, not sure that show will recapture it's magic again. But anyway, I am torn between posting here and getting away from the computer and TV and getting in more exercise, tackling some chores I keep making excuses for putting off and I have decided to take on the "100 things in 1000 days" project where you make a list of 100 things you want to or feel compelled to do and you have 1000 days to get it done. Can't leave them all until the last month of the project.

So that's why I haven't been as active a poster in this challenge as I was in prior challenges. But I do try to get in here a couple of times a week.

Anyway - if everyone's away, I hope that means that they are having a great weekend. It's a little too warm down here right now which makes being outside challenging.

Tonia 06-08-2008 08:50 AM

Good morning everyone and congradulations Jessica! :woohoo:

I am taking a freebie week this week - I went to the doctor and while everything is fine we were talking about diet/exercise...she said they recommend women who are trying to lose weight drop their calories down to 1200-1400. I am almost embarrased to say this but I couldn't believe it. I have been hovering around the 1800-2000 mark for a while and knew I needed to take it down but 1200? That is just crazy talk.

I honestly thought that because I am tall and big boned (really, I am - my fingers do not go around my wrist at all :) ) that I would need more calories. But, what she said makes since - that will help me to lose 2-3 pounds a week which helps keep me motivated (a recent problem).

Soooooo....that being said, on Monday and I am going to adjust my intake. I have been losing about a pound a week during this challenge - which, while still losing is PAINSTAKENLY slow so hopefully this will be an easy way to help speed things up.

Have a blessed week! :)

trooworld 06-08-2008 12:17 PM

Hello everyone. I just wanted to let you all know that I am bowing out of the contest. I've been off track too long and have gained some weight and I don't want to affect the team's numbers. I'm not giving up on my weightloss efforts, you'll still see me around 3FC. Best wishes to all and keep up the great work!

JuliaDH 06-08-2008 12:41 PM

Morning all!
Fresh week starting today. Sorry I had to post a gain this week. TOM came a week early. It has been pretty irregular since my healthier lifestyle started. Not liking the unpredictable schedule!

Last week was rough for exercise. We went from cold spring to 43C with humidity. Think I will do shorter 15 min intervals of exercise several times a day. Just so it is not as challenging to struggle thru the heat.

Maybe a QUESTION for the DAY would be...HOW do you alter your exercise to accomodate for the heat/humidity?

happy2bme 06-08-2008 12:47 PM

I don't know how others feel but ...

To me this challenge is NOT about beating the other team(s) in the weekly weigh ins.

It's not about having bragging rights for being the chattiest group.

It's not about being the first one to hit the beach on the exercise challenges.

It IS all about having a group of people coming together, some of which who have some encouraging words or great ideas that help me to stay on track or get off the couch and get moving or drinking my water or trying new ways to cook some foods that I might not have even considered.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me if the Black Team never won a challenge. But if people stuck it out, and managed to make healthy choices for 12 weeks running - that would be success. I truly admire the folks who dive in and lose 20 pounds during the challenge. I can't do that - but very often I've felt like falling into my old habits but were motivated to do jumping jacks for a day or try roasted brussels spouts and it was the diversion I needed to stay on track.

I do understand that it's better to get out and take a walk than to sit in front of the computer for 2 hours at a time - I'm trying to cut back myself.

Just makes me sad when we lose people from the team :(

JuliaDH 06-08-2008 12:59 PM

I to am sad to see people leave. And I really do hope it is for making overall healthier choices. I do wish I could chit chat more often thru the day but...I must strive to balance caring for my family and caring for me. The challenge is helping me to reschedule things in life and watching others is proving to me that I can fit is exercise. This after years of saying "When?". I have be juggling in and blending all sorts of new things into our life. For example EZ Money's 5ks. I am doing them with my family. I am learning that working out does not mean 2 hours at the gym. Plus shower time, travel time and sitters to watch the kids. A workout for me is to be active with my family. Therefore we are all healthier. I have also added to help me limit my computer time. A kitchen timer. 15 min gone equals me out of my office chair and doing the next task. Please re-evaluate any choice to leave and see how you can make it work for you! I am sure none of us would be offended by 1 posting ever 2 or 3 days. Doesn't it say some where you must post a min of ONCE a week in chat?
Lets do the best we can to support each other without it being an additional demand on life.

hope4me 06-08-2008 01:55 PM

Hi Team,

I totally agree with Happy2bme about the whole philosophy of the challenge. I have to admit though that I've been thinking of dropping out just like Trooworld. I haven't been able to get a grip this whole time and have only gained. I love the support, but I do feel like I'm just a burden on the team members whole truely want the prize.

I've done some of the exercising which has helped me personally in so many ways, although that has slowed somewhat also. I would like to stay on a while longer if nobody minds and hope for the best.

taragettingthin 06-08-2008 02:13 PM

Hi, just stopping by since I have a second to spare. I'm going to go work out...although I'm kinda tired from going swimming with DD. She was so scared since she's only 2... Well.. I'll be back later when I get to work to go check out some posts. :)

**My weigh-in is tomorrow so we will see how I did this week..with all that rest of exercise and eating out. :(

OolongFormosa 06-08-2008 03:08 PM

hello,ladies :)

I'm a total mess...this week I'll have a **** of a time at college ( and I don't mean it in a good way :( )
next month it will be all over, but I have 7 more finals to pass, and I don't think I'm going to make it :(
but I'll try my best and hope my best will be good enough :)

and to top it all it's TOM time :( I think I gained a couple of pounds, and it's not the greatest feeling. I was so happy 3 days ago when my scale was showing 97.5 kilos, and this morning there was an ugly 100kg :( not a great start of the day. I will weigh in tomorrow and write it down, I hope it's just water retention :(

I have a question: should we fill in our lost weigh in data or should our team leader do that ? :?:
I'm not sure what my numbers were in what week, but I know that they were around 218/219 ( I don't know what week was which :?: )

ggmugsy 06-08-2008 04:39 PM

Jessica (and everybody else that is graduating) - CONGRATULATIONS!! It's a huge accomplishment. Don't worry about celebrating. You deserve it!!

Oolong - Good luck!! Just keep breathing and do your best. It will all work out.

Tara - I'd give anything to take my 2 year olds swimming again. Enjoy this time because it goes VERY quickly.

Jenjen - AWESOME JOB on the 2 pound loss!! Whoo hooo!!!

Julia - Great to see you here! For your question, I usually workout inside. The weather here still stinks but when it gets hot, I love to walk or hike in the mornings or late in the evening and avoid the heat of the day.

Theresia - Good luck with your move!

Hope4me - I'm VERY glad you chose to continue with the challenge.

I ditto what Happy said. I would rather be on the team with the most people at the finish line than be on the team that lost the most weight. Weight loss is never a straight downward motion. It seems to always be a two steps forward, one step back journey.

Purplefirefly 06-08-2008 04:40 PM

I haven't been around because I am SICK and miserable, but came today to get my weight posted. I am not sure about the missing weeks, I do not write my weight down anywhere else :?: I do have my exercise minutes logged on my webwalking sheet, but no exact activities.

I hate to see people dropping out, but it happens every time. It will dwindle on all teams until we end up on one chat thread for all teams...that's what happened last time and it was talked about like it always happens that way. I'm sad to see our members drop out, but for those who want to stay in KEEP GOING, even if you are struggling, TRY your best and we will be proud to have you on our team. I love to win, but really this is about making changes in our life for the better and supporting one another...so if you have to, forget about the contest part and just focus on doing your best and supporting others.

My head is spinning, must hit the couch again before I hit the floor :(

ggmugsy 06-08-2008 04:44 PM

Tonia - I just re-read your post. I agree with you that your Dr.'s recommendation seems VERY low. If you listen to Dr. Oz he recommends only cutting by 100 calories per day. If your weight loss is slower than you want, just cut a hundred calories per day at a time and see how that goes, then take it down further if you want to. I like the Weight Watchers approach . . . every 10 pounds you lose 50 calories per day. JMHO.

This is supposed to be a LIFESTYLE change . . . not a quick fix diet. We all know those don't work.

happy2bme 06-08-2008 06:14 PM

Julia - to your question...

I live in a place that has hot, humid summers. And right now we are in the 90s with alot of humidity - late July weather that has come way, way early this year in June instead. It's too hot and uncomfortable to do much outside other than swim so I tend to get my walks in the office where it's cool or workout at home with videos.

Manick 06-08-2008 06:15 PM

Hey Teamies....I agree RE the "do your best" during this challenge, learn and grow in these 12 weeks, all I hope is that people are making a difference for themselves and their health...I know for me it has been a huge boost to know that others are serious and doing this too.

Busy day here...see ya all tomorrow probably!

trooworld 06-08-2008 07:58 PM

Hi all. I've been reading the posts and received a private message that made me think about my decision to leave the team. I really don't want to leave the team but as another poster said, I feel like I am holding the team back. I really do need the support and I am serious about losing weight, I've just fallen off track. Things are calming down around here and I have a whole week's worth of good meals planned. My question is: would you all be okay if I stayed on the team? I promise to do my best.

SoulBliss 06-08-2008 08:05 PM

I'd be GREAT if you stayed on the team, Troo. ;) :grouphug:

SoulBliss 06-08-2008 08:06 PM

Oh, and anyone else who is thinking about leaving, reconsider! We are here to learn, create healthier habits and be good to one another. :)

I'm not even on your team and I vote for not leaving! LOL! Support is such a huge key to success in this weight loss journey. It just helps tremendously to know that you aren't alone. Someone else has been where you are and someone else needs your guidance as well. The numbers and pounds are what they are...just numbers. something we use as a guide, but there is so much more to this weight loss thing! I say stay with your team, work through the rough patch and eventually you'll have some success to share! Your team wants to be there to help get you back on track! I know you can do it and I know your team knows it too! Good luck!!!

taragettingthin 06-08-2008 08:35 PM

Troo, we are all here for you. Although this is my first challenge, I really believe the reason it's there is for us to support each other, get help when needed, and help when needed. Nobody's perfect, and we all have times when we fall off of wagon. But keep getting back on the track, that's what counts..because this is NOT just a quick fix, but life style change! And Change is a Challenge... If everyone lost every week and it was so easy, why bother to even have a challenge..?
So don't leave us! =)

maryshady 06-08-2008 08:57 PM

Hi Team!!!

Had a good week this week. I counted calories and wrote everything down all week. Then came the weekend. I didn't do too terrible but ate some things that I know I don't have control over. Will see how it goes tomorrow at weigh in.

Jessica- congrats on graduating!!:carrot: It is such a great accomplishment.

Troo- so glad you decided not to drop out!! We are all in this together.

Tonia- I agree with the other poster. 1200-1400 cals is fine if your not working out but you need to count extra calories especially if you are lifting weights three times a week. Your body will start to eat its own muscle if your not getting enough in (your heart is a muscle!) I personally think 1-2 lbs a week is the best way to go. It might be slow but its been proven those who take longer to lose usually keep it off.

Well off to finish some laundry. I did so much yard work this weekend I didn't get any house work done. Only 7 days of work left till summer vacation! woohoo:D:D:D

trooworld 06-08-2008 09:18 PM

Soul: thanks, I appreciate that. I really do.

Melissa: wow! A vote of confidence from another team! As I said in one of my posts, I definitely need support. I owe any success in my weight loss journey so far to the 3FC website, and now that I have the Black Team, it really is a good support system for me. I don't really talk about it with the people in my life (besides my husband) because I don't want this to be another effort that they say, "Oh, she's on that kick again." It's nice to have people to talk to that understand what I am going through. Thanks a lot, Melissa.

Tara: I was thinking about this, and if everyone that gained weight dropped out because of weight gain, we would probably have a lot less members, huh? I guess I shouldn't give up on myself so easily.

Mary: thanks for your support.

To all: I've been so hard on myself for the past couple of weeks because of bad decisions and weight gain. It's just made things worse. I'm my own worst enemy. Nobody here has made me feel unwelcomed, it's just my own mind playing tricks on me and putting myself down. I started off with such a bang, doing everything right and sticking to the plan and then when it came time to move, I slipped once or twice and then used moving as an excuse to get off track. But not anymore. Tomorrow is back to the plan (I'd say today but it's 6:16pm here). I'm going to start it off right: before I get to unpacking or grocery shopping or any nonsense, I am going to go for a nice long walk around my new neighborhood. I'm going to get up, have some coffee and then go. And when I am done, I'm going to come home and have some high fiber cereal with fruit for breakfast. That's my plan for the morning. I'm not going to give up.

taragettingthin 06-08-2008 10:16 PM

I'm glad to hear that you are back on the wagon, Troo. High fiber cereal with fruit sounds really good. Nice walk sounds really good too.

I'm at work right now, no cereal or fruit available, and walking...in this weather would be a VERY BAD idea....as we just had tornado warning lifted this evening. I made some baked pork cutlet and brought some kimchi (korean pickled cabbage) for lunch/dinner and will try to eat not so much of it so that it won't affect tomorrow morning's weigh-in. :D

ChopperChick355 06-08-2008 11:00 PM

Trooworld that is great that you decided to stay with the team. You know I am in same boat as you I really gained weight this last week and I am not talking just a pound. I have been really struggling so far through this minus the first week but I am going to get back on track this week and start losing. I do have to say that I have been exercising alot more then I normally do and that has to be a great plus....

I would also like to say Congratulations to all you graduates as well. :) Way to go

JenJen great job on the 2 lb loss that is great.

Well everyone have a great Monday!

You are so welcome! Are you reading Bob's book? he talks alot about changing that internal tape recorder. Every single person fighting to win the weight loss battle has slips, the success is in picking ourselves up and moving forward and thats what you are doing...WAY TO GO!!! Cant wait to hear how successful your tomorrow is!!!

Manick 06-09-2008 01:45 AM

Troo--STAY! I would miss you and your foodie enthusiasm! You know moving is VERY stressful! It is hard to plan and keep on plan when your life is not settled, not to mention having to unpack and learn new systems for everyday routines...please don't worry about letting the team down, it is more important that this is real for you...we cheer for real effort and we've ALL been there, none of us has done (or can do) this perfectly! Weight loss IS hard! Getting back up and refocusing is hard! If you feel you can do better in the midst of all your life changes we're behind you! That is HUGE and you can do it! One step forward is a step in the right direction! :carrot:

JuliaDH 06-09-2008 08:04 AM

Troo & others who feel overwhelmed or discouraged. The only way we really win this challenge is to stick together. We may not lose tons of lbs as a team but if we can all encourage eachother to lose a fraction it is all worth while. There is a qoute that basically says shoot for the stars and you may land on the moon. That is a good goal! Common team lets hang together and keep plugging away at it!

chiquita623 06-09-2008 09:39 AM

Good Morning Teammates!!! I'm baaaaaack - as some of you may know/remember I had an auditor with me at work for the past month or so and things have been stressful to say the least. He left on Friday and I'm hoping things will get back to normal now. The good part was that I maintained while he was here. I'm going to get back on track with exercising and journaling my foods again to see what I can do to jump start the losing again.

For those of you that have thought of giving up on this challenge - I was in the last TBL challenge (on the black team) and I started gaining weight and I just quit. No explanations to anyone - I just disappeared from posting and logging in. The only person I think I was quitting on was myself when I did that. Personally, I'd rather have you on the team and post a gain (at least then we all know we're human and not perfect) because we're not always going to be losers in this battle. Some weeks we'll be up a little and some we'll be down. But without each other to cheer us on or kick us in the behind when we need it I believe it would be a lot tougher to get through this and still be sane.

Anyway, enough of my soapbox. I'm just thrilled that I'm on this team and you all will be stuck with me through my ups and downs and I know I can count on you all to give me a boost when I need it. Everyone have a great Monday. I'll be back later after I clean off my desk.

Keillynsmom 06-09-2008 11:18 AM

Morning, all!

I'm having a rough time of it, but trying to increase my exercise this week and get back on plan eating wise! My birthday is in about a month and it would be nice to be in new territory weight wise. I got a family membership to one of the local rec centers with a really great indoor pool and the girls and I went swimming yesterday. This morning, I walked for 45 minutes, did weights for 30 minutes and swam for 45 minutes. If I can manage to not give into emotional eating thing for a few days and see some results, I should be good to go for awhile.

Reading through the new Biggest Loser hint book -- seems to be some cool ideas in there. They have a neat "flag" system to help keep you on track.

Glad you're staying, trooworld!

Good luck,

Barb

ggmugsy 06-09-2008 11:29 AM

Troo, Chiquita, & Hope4me - I'm VERY glad to read you are all staying. Ditto with all that have considered quitting and chose to remain on the team!!

Keillynsmom - Great job getting back on the exercise!!

I had a loss today. :) Down 2.4 pounds! (I think it's over 2 pounds because I didn't lose anything last week.) My goal was to get out of the 170's and I DID!!! Yeeee-hawwwww!! I hope I never see 170 on the scale EVER again.

Anyway . . . I started HIIT this week. High Intensity Interval Training and I think it really helped jack up my metabolism. I burn more calories in a shorter period of time as well. :)

Who's the gardener that didn't clean house?? I'M JUST LIKE YOU. I'm one or the other. Yard or house . . . I've never been able to balance the two.

Let's all have a GREAT week!!

SoulBliss 06-09-2008 11:40 AM

Yay! You are in the 160's!!!!

As far as the house goes, I need to clean BOTH the house AND the outside area. I live on a canyon and it is MESSY, a JUNGLE out there!!!

glitterlicious 06-09-2008 11:54 AM

I am sooo excitied!!! :)

I lost 4.5 pounds this week and have stayed totally OP. This has been my third week in a row OP, going on four. I just pray for the stamina to stay strong as temptations come my way.

But anyways my only concern with the 4.5 pound loss is that we have had an entire weekend of 90-degree days and I fear that some of that loss has been from dehydration. One of my main goals for today is to rehydrate myself.

I was supposed to run early this morning, but I stayed over at a friends house and woke up late. I was still going to run but it is 92 degrees out now and with the possible dehydration, I figured it wasn't worth risking hurting myself. So I think I am going to do my cardio circuit strength training today in my cool house instead and just flip-flop my cardio and strength days for the week...it's all about being adaptable and being willing to make adjustments to the plan.

Hope everyone has had a great week! Don't get discouraged....think of how far you have come! :)
