~~May Golden Girls~~

We are about Fitness and Quality of Life after 50...
We are about Fun and Friendship after 50...

We are the Golden Girls...

There is Value in us
There is Power in us
There is Wisdom in us
And Laughter....
We are a rainbow of unique wonders,
There is love in us.
(poem by Dorothy Holmes)

Tell us a little about your life, family and goals. What keeps you motivated? What is the best thing that's happened to you since you passed the 50 mark? How about the 60 mark?
Friends laugh, cry and stand by each other, we'll be that to you!

Almost time for bed, but I wanted to go into "May mode"... change the picture, colors, etc.

Hope you've all had a good weekend, so far! I'm going to bed! This feeling crappy is draining the energy right out of me! Onward!

Good Morning Golden Girls

Can't believe it's already May. Where is my spring? It's still too cool here and it's still raining. It rains some almost every day. The kids should have been practicing football and soccer and just haven't been able to. Now it's time for the games to start, with almost no practice. Today is the first football (tag) game. But first, it's DGD's first communion. I'm sure by now she is bouncing off the wall. She gets so excited and so dramatic. So fun! Later today is her first football game. She's going from looking like a little princess to kicking butt on the football field. So, busy day for us.

Rosie, you are looking good. And you're so talented. I just read the Mary Higgans Clark book too. I like her stuff. Right now I'm reading the new Alex Cross.

Donna, I like the new picture of you and your friend. Beautiful. A Siamese used to live with me too. They are so smart! The Zivirex is for nerve pain. You can take the pills or use the cream. It shortens the duration of the sumptoms along with easing the pain. Call your Dr. and ask for a script. Why they didn't prescribe it is beyond it.

TTYL, gotta go

Freda

Good Morning!
DH is out turkey hunting and I planned on skipping church since it was SUPPOSE TO BE NICE. I have two flats of flowers to plant and can't get them in because of constant rain. Yeah Freda, it doesn't stop raining here either. Today we have 40-50 mile an hour wind but no rain. I'm going to go out anyway, put my winter jacket on and plant. I have to get them into the ground, we have our home on the flower/garden tour this year and I want the plants to be established and lookin good. Donna, love the new picture of you and kitty cat. Rosey, what did you applique on your T-shirt? DH just drove by my SIL's son's big warehouse. He said at least 12 fire trucks are there, the place is engulfed with fire...bummer! I'm sure the high winds aren't helping.
I'll let you all know if I get frost bite on my nose today, my lawn furniture in our shade garden is spread half way across the yard and cushions every where.

Every once in a while, I like to reconsider Bobbi’s questions. The best thing that happened to me since turning 60 is getting stage 2 diabetes. It was the reason I began eating right and exercising and I don’t think I ever would have done this without the horrible threats of this disease.

Hi Rosey,

You are VERY creative. I LOVE the blouse.

I am so sorry you are feeling bad. I hope May is a better month for you.

Hi Freda,

I LOVE it – little princess to quarterback! How great is that!

Hi Bobbi,

I am so sorry to hear about the fire. Hopefully, everyone will stay safe.

Good morning all,

Well, days off are over ~ back to work. I so much more enjoy my time at home ~ even if I am working here cleaning a closet or what ever ~ I so much prefer that to going to work. Oh well.

Good sermon on Joel Osteen this morning about joy and laughter and how that helps you have better health. I need to work at that more.

Ok, guess I'd better quit fooling around and finish getting ready.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Take care

jess1 05-01-2011 10:29 AM

Quick Good Morning, All...
Am "backup" for an in-store demo gig (and I hope they don't need me!), so I have to shower and get rolling soon...

Freda, I do have a prescription for Acyclovir, which I suspect is a derivative of the medication you mentioned. I'm taking 4 x 5 x 7 days of it, 140 total in a week! I would hate to think that my 12-year old, cute-as-a-button little doctor was a boob! The analgesic cream that I bought online is the marvel of my life. The muscle pains are gone within mere moments (including the groin pain in my leg!), and I hope I don't build up a resistance to it, because it's WONDERFUL!

Rosey, nice job on the t'shirt! However, my lovely friend, you're buying clothes too big for you! You're smaller than you think you are! You're doing so well!!

Nothing else. Because I'm more interested in sleeping these days than in eating (and have no real appetite, anyway), the scale is marginally my friend. Ha! We'll see how long THAT lasts!

Thanks for the kind words about SamCat, the very lovely and purely precious Siamese in my avatar. I LOVE him!!

Hope the day is a good one, Everyone! May IS a better month! :carrot:

Morning.....Glad you are getting into Spring as it rolls into Summer down here. The bugs are driving us insane. Guess they are saving money by spray less. No see'ums are just teeth that fly.

Bobbie...Thank you for the start up. I have been watching the Decorah eagles, too. Plus the owls and falcons on that site. Plus Fl blue birds and http://www.manateecam.org. That one is in 10 second intervals and sometime you see part of a manatee then click the rear of a manatee.....not the prettiest shot.

Rosie....you are looking mighty fine girl....mighty fine. When does Dh get report on test results?

Freda....thank you. I will smile all day with the image of princess to footballer.

Donna....hope you had a quiet day at home.

Gayle....Hope this week off will be the turn around and work gets easier from now on.

Lynn....Good idea to think about what turning an age has done. Turning 60 and moving down here was really starting over with all new friends and life style. Turning 70 is still up for grabs, but so far 70's feel better than 60's. For the first time ever I have the abilitity to say NO! Shocks everyone especially my family. Taking time to care for me is another biggy.

Need to get to the store and get Dash's turkey thighs. Have hugh bag of fresh yellow squash....any ideas what do with that much squash????? probably 30 of them. Green beans and red potatoes too......friend's garden is producing bushels.....ohh just found recipe for sqash pie....a savory pie....cheese onion and more cheese. eat it leave the crust...hmmmm

later k3

Good Morning GG's. Not much new here - I'm going to go and putter in the yard a bit, since DH has the veggie garden all rottotilled now. Have a good day ladies! :)

Riemontana 05-01-2011 01:15 PM

Good Morning and Happy May Day!

I had a great workout today and made it through my toughest low impact aerobic routine. First time I have ever finished it.

I did my little pamper/self care routine this morning. I did a facial mask. I took a really luxurious, exfoliating shower (unlike the quick scrub I do daily) using nice body wash and a loofa. Deep condition hair. Foot care with coconut oil and full body lotion slathered on my still wet skin. I used my good overnight moisturizer on my face and neck, combed out my hair and I feel lovely! I am highly recommending Oil of Olay body wash - I got a 3pack at Sam's for really cheap. It is really nice.

Donna, I love your new picture of you and your friend.

Rosey, nice job on the t-shirt - I can't do anything like that. I also think you are getting to the point that you could wear a smaller size. Good job!

Freda, there is an old movie with Helen Hunt that is called "quarter back princess" that is really sweet. You guys might like it. It is probably available on netflix.

Tea Granny, enjoy the outdoors.

Karen3. Squash is lovely as are new potatoes! I love them saute'd with onions, stir fried, or pureed in different fashion. Yum!

Bobbi, I hope everything is ok with the fire.

Lynn, I also think that being diagnosed with T2 after turning 51 was the best thing. I believe that I will live a longer, healthier, and more active life. I probably would have just dropped dead from a heart attack without ever taking care of myself if I hadn't been given the wakeup call.

Karen3 I also seem to have developed the ability to say NO. To say it politely but firmly and to not feel bad about myself. As a social worker, I take care of people in my work and I spent lots of time taking care of people in my life. It is enough and I feel better.

I hope that everyone has a good day!

maryea 05-01-2011 03:14 PM

I can't believe it is May already! April just seemed to fly by we were so busy and May promises to be even busier I think. I've done my complaining in the counters thread so am not going to complain here. Life is good and I am back on track..it's a new day and a new month!:carrot:

On Sunday I don't do much housework..just the daily stuff and that is already done even though I got up late. My plan is to work a bit outside (where dh is already) and spend the rest of the day quietly reading, praying, and later watching a little TV. Sorry for those who are getting a lot of rain...it is beautiful here again today.

Our main meal today (lunch/dinner) is going to be grilled steak, a shared baked potato, and lots of veggies. I just finished breakfast so it doesn't sound that good to me right now but hopefully it will by then.

Riemontana - love your pampering ideas! I take good care of my skin and get compliments on it, esp when people know my age, but I always plan to use a masque treatment once a week and then usually forget so thanks for the reminder.

Teagranny - My dh has now planted tomato, onions, garlic, green pepper, and eggplant I think. Maybe more. I told him he doesn't need to do it anymore but he wanted to do it just cause he enjoys it. And last year he fractured his leg and didn't get to complete his garden.

Rosey & Freda - I too enjoy Mary Higgins Clark and Alex Cross...love mysteries. I'm reading Storm Cycle right now by Roy Johansen. He is the son of Iris Johansen, another author I read. I always have two or three books going at the same time. Righ now besides this one, I'm continuing to read The Darkness and the Dawn. This is a great book but I got side-tracked by another book I was reading esp for Easter, but they are both about the same thing and by same author...just a shorter and longer version really. I am also continuing to read 10 min to Powerful Prayer by Stormie Omartian, a great little devotional book I have read over and over, but think tomorrow I am going to begin Praying the Names of Jesus instead. I think I can use it in a similiar way. BTW, Rosey, I love your T-shirt! I'd never think to do something like that..you are very creative! I too think you are probably ready for a smaller size. I remember when I lost weight before not realizing i could wear a smaller size. In my case it was ONLY when I bought smaller size clothing that people started noticing my weight loss!

Riemontana & Lynn - I agree with you that getting the diabetes dx really set me on the path to good health. I have always eaten healthy 80%+ of the time but I had gotten into the habit of just eating way too much. Even before the dx I had changed a lot bad habits but had gone back to still eating too much and had regained weight I had lost. So the dx really came at a time when I badly needed to get it under control. I continue to struggle with consistency...of limiting calories and carbs....but I certainly have the incentive esp as I can see my diabetes is getting worse!

Jess - What is the name of the analgesic cream that helps you with nerve pain? Maybe it would help me.

Well, I've decided I have to limit my time sitting at this computer so better get off right now. I think I'll set a timer for one hour at a time and see whether it helps my leg. Have a wonderful Sunday, everyone!

Laffalot 05-01-2011 03:51 PM

:D Hi Everyone - I too can't believe that it is May already! And we have warm sunshine today! :sunny: About time  I've done most of what I want inside & now Baxter & I are going outside for the rest of the day. I evaluated dogs yesterday for St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program - had only 3 to do - a Golden Retriever, an English Mastiff & to top it off a jet black Great Dane! Too cool! Then went to a small home show & finished the day at a dog agility trial. I haven't been staying OP very well this week - don't know what's the matter with me! :( :( I need a kick you know where! I promise to stick to it from now on - there now, I have to keep a promise, eh? :dust:

Rosy: I love the applique on your top.

Bobbi: So sorry about the fire-hope all will be OK.

Donna: I hope you have feel better soon!

Turning 70 wasn't so bad once I got used to it. The 40's,. 50's & 60's wasn't bad but 70 I had to think about. I'm now 72 & rather used to it & it isn't bad at all. I love life & really try to enjoy every minute. The hard part is losing more acquaintances/friends now to the "grim reaper"--just lost another one yesterday. :( But that's all a part of life too isn't it? Anyway I'm outside for the rest of the day! TTYL

Hi everybody...I'm pooped! Took the dgd & dgs to the Southwick Zoo today - biggest zoo in New England, and my feet can attest to the truth of that! Feeling ready for bed, but have to make soup. HAD to send this along because so many of us are readers!

One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside
cottage after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap.

Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out.

She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up,
and begins to read her book.

The peace and solitude are magnificent.

Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat.

He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?'

'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?')

'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her.

'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.'

'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment.
For all I know you could start at any moment.
I'll have to take you in and write you up.'

'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' says the woman.

'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden.

'That's true, but you have all the equipment.
For all I know you could start at any moment.'

'Have a nice day ma'am,' and he left.

MORAL:
Never argue with a woman who reads.
It's likely she can also think.

Jane,
Can I say the name of that analgesic cream or is that a no-no that I need to use PM?

Nancyoyo 05-01-2011 08:28 PM

Hey GGs,
Had a really good day today, & yesterday. I’m just feeling happy. Maybe it’s the weather, it’s been really nice the last couple of days. And, it is so beautiful around here this time of year. Maybe it’s also that I have so much more energy now. This is my first spring without those extra 100 lbs., that I’ve been carrying around for years. I feel sort of like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon (is that silly?). Anyway, I feel goood.
Also, have a feeling of accomplishment, since my SO & I finished several outdoor projects this weekend.

Zoe, sounds like you got plenty of exercise today. Loved the story. So funny! And true, we readers are smart!

Maureen & Mary & Sherry, I’m glad you are also enjoying good weather & can get outside. KarenFL, sounds like the bugs & heat might be keeping you inside (do the no see’ums at least leave you alone when you’re in the pool?). Guess I won’t be missing FL too much until Nov. or Dec. Poor Bobbi, rain & then wind! Hope you managed to get your flowers planted. Does your SIL have insurance on that warehouse, & what was in it?

Rie, I really like your idea of a pamper day, but I never seem to find the right time (& I could if I really wanted to!). Gayle, I’m sorry you don’t get more time to spend at home. Hope your return to work wasn’t too bad. I am so lucky that I don’t have a job. We don’t have much money, but we have everything we really need, & I’m so much happier than when I was working. I just wish we could afford for SO to quit his job, but one of us has to have one, & he usually doesn’t mind it.

Lynn, & Rie, it’s nice when you turn something negative into something positive. And you both seem to have gotten into very healthy lifestyles!

Freda, hope you enjoyed your busy day with your “football princess”.

Donna, I love the new avatar pic of you & SamCat. Both of you are lookin’ good! Glad your scale is being a little more friendly. And, hope you’re soon over your shingles. My mom said when she had shingles (& she thought hers was spider bites at first), it only lasted about 2 weeks after she started taking medicine for it.

Rosey, you’re lookin’ good, & I love what you did with that t-shirt! I sometimes like decorating mine, but I’m lazy - I just get the iron-on ones that you can make with your printer. Then I just add a little glittery fabric paint.

Before I go, I have to mention that instead of gaining this week because of Easter, I managed to lose half a pound. Yay! Now, time for my nightly snack - my new thing is mixing sugar-free pudding mix with non-fat yogurt & some cool whip. Really yummy! My favorite, so far, is the chocolate pudding mix with raspberry yogurt. Bye y'all.

A beautiful spring day.spent some time on the deck without ajacket or sweater. my dh wanted salad for dinner so we went to town to get some lettuce (and at the price of gas that was expensive lettuce :dizzy:) anyways it was to nice to stay home.as it was a short trip i didnt take my wheel chair or walker,on the way home we decided to visit the mil. and i had nsv. i hung unto my dh and walked into the care center i was so proud of myself and amazed my mil and bril.. i felt tall and strong even at 4ft 9 inches tall :D thanks for the compliments on my t-shirt..its a tunic t-shirt and a little flared but it skims my lower curves and its not to tight. im narrow shouldered and until it washed afew times it looks big..i do have trouble with sizes tho so 1x here i come:D hope your weekend was sunny and nice  rosey

nonamortica 05-01-2011 10:33 PM

May is here!

Good evening everyone! I've been running around all day but wanted to check in. I intended to work in my little hill of a front yard today but by the time I got home from shopping I was tired. So I took a short nap. Got up and did manage to feed my climbing rose and my bleeding heart and my lilacs.

I also got in some exercise today. I've decided to try and get something in every day. I put on Paul Simon's Rhytm of the Saints and just danced around through the whole thing. Then I got on my inversioin table. I should do that every day.

I appologize in advance if I do not acknowledge all of you. Between menopause, hypothyroid, ADHD, and the cataract that is making its presence known in my right eye, I have a hard time keeping up. But I do enjoy reading about what you are all doing.

I tried making some on plan, sugar free icecream tonight in a little icecream maker. It was interasting. I think I need to work on the recipe.

Rie, that pampering sounds wonderful. I may follow your example soon. Plus I could use a good massage.

Well I 'm off to bed. Have to get up early and be at work by 7:30.

Night all,

glynne 05-01-2011 10:38 PM

Awesome Rosey ~ congrats on the NSV walking without the walker :carrot:

As for the apprentice, it sounds like Hope got the Axe. I'd like to see the results when the girls went into the boardroom. NeNe tweeted that Star Jones and Hope went with her into the boardroom and Hope is gone?

ellabella 05-02-2011 09:54 AM

Happy May, y’all! I am SO glad to be getting outside again, even though it’s not exactly super-warm hereabouts just yet. High 50’s, low 60’s, but hey, I’ll take it! Bright sunshine :goodvibes here this morning even though the prediction for the week is cool and cloudy, with rain on and off. NO SNOW. Yipee! So dh & I took the grandkiddos to the Southwick Zoo yesterday. The place is HUGE! We walked and walked – for five solid hours! Well – a lot of stops and starts, so no speed-walking that could increase our heart rates. Just a lot of plodding with a few stops for refreshments along the way. Dh and I did, however, do some more energetic walking on Saturday out at the reservoir not far from our house. There are a lot of walking paths around it, and a lot of up and down-hill walking. After an hour and a half, I was getting pretty short of breath on the uphill slopes. I sure turned into a slug over the winter months! :moo:

Nona, don’t worry about acknowledging everybody; none of us manages that very well, and for mostly the same reasons as you described. I love Lilacs! In the house where I raised my kids, I had five huge Lilac bushes across my back yard. In spring, the air smelled so sweet that I would sometimes just sit out there with my eyes closed and let it wash over me.
Omigod, Rosey! You did it without your walker! I am SO happy for you! Such a great accomplishment! And the best part is that there is so much more progress ahead!
Nancy, you have every right – and every reason – to feel absolutely fantastic! What an achievement! I have to admit that I’m a little envious of your not having to work, but I keep telling myself that it’s just a matter of MONTHS for me, now, and that I can do it standing on my head. (Well, that would be if I COULD stand on my head, you understand….I’m for sure not the most limber person around. I’m thinking I should try yoga, but I’ll probably keep right on thinking I should without doing anything about it for a very long time…)
Mary, I’m wanting to plant some tomatoes and eggplant this year. I do all my planting in big urns; it’s just easier, and I have them arranged nicely in little pathways around the yard along with some flowering shrubs and such. So do you think eggpant would work in a big urn, or do the roots need more room to grow?
Rie, when I was a young social worker, not too long out of college, I carried around quite a savior complex. (Didn’t we all?) As the years have passed and I moved on from social work to therapy in a clinical setting to administration, and now writing, I, too have learned to take care of myself first and foremost, because if I don’t take care of myself, there isn’t much that I can do for anyone else. I love the kind of pamper sessions you describe. I’m still using Calgon Bath beads…when my kids were growing up, there was an advertising slogan: “Calgon, take me away…” and it still does. I love sitting in a hot tub for an hour or more (adding more hot water as needed) and then showering off after the fact. Heavenly. :cloud9:
Happy puttering, Maureen!
Karen3, I’m so glad that you’ve managed to master “No” – at least some of the time. I’m working on it – sometimes with some success, other times, not so much. Oh – about those bugs driving you crazy? If you can stand it, try eating lots of garlic, or take Garlic capsules. I remember once eating a very garlicky meal, and was later outside playing softball with the kids and grandkids. I SWEAR a bug flew right up to my face, got within about a foot of my mouth, and did a quick right turn and flew away as fast as his little wings could take him. Of course, PEOPLE tended to back away as well…
Love your new avatar, PT, and glad the scale is being more cooperative these days.
Hi Gayle….oh, yeah. Joyful people really are supposed to be healthier and happier. I figure I’ll be pretty joyful once I’m through working – if I make it that far, that is. Bit of a pessimist, here, I’m afraid.
Hope your planting went well, Bobbi!
Sorry about all your rainy weather, Freda (and Bobbi) – I believe I may have mentioned already that if we get one of those rainy summers after the rotten winter we had, I may end up doing something quite drastic. (Filing a complaint? Does anybody know who to file it with?)
Have a great Monday, everybody!

Good Morning lovely ladies,

It was a fun, fast, weekend! It seems like it was here and gone so quickly I have to stop and think about what we did! Lots of running. Sunday Morning Church for DGD's first communion (and she did look like a little princess). Went out for brekfast afterwards and then on to the football games. They both won their first games. And DGD was, again, the only girl on her team.
dgd also has a girl on his team, and both girls are getting quite the reputation for being "just as good as the boys". of course, they have to be much better to be accepted! We women know that!

Nancy, It's awsome that you managed to lose 1/2 lb. during Easter. No small accomplishment. It's a time when we all usually manage to over eat and pack on a couple of pounds, at least. And it's not silly at all to think that you have emerged from a cocoon and become a butterfly! Try picking up 100 lb. of anything and carry it around for awhile. Losing that much would have to give you so much more energy. And again, YEAH for you!

Rosie, An AH HA moment! Going shopping without your cane. Get used to it lady, the best is yet to come! You're going to have many more ah ha moments.

Nona, Don't appologize for not remembering all of us. It takes awhile. And we still forget sometimes. Glad to have you here.

Hi Gayle, Hope work is going well for you.

Bobbi, Don't watch that show. Not sure I could take that much of "the Donald".

Rie, I don't pamper myself nearly enough. I like the idea, but never quite get around to it. I do good to keep my legs shaved! And that's in the summer time. Something I should surely work on.

Z, Sounds like you have lots of fun this weekend and got in lots of exercise too. They can go together!

Mary, I can't wait to get outside and play in the dirt. I don't have much room, just around the back fence, but I'm thinking of expanding it some. we love to garden so much, and really enjoy the things we grow. Mostly just tomatoes, but I love summer squash and I'm thinking of one of those too. Maybe a zucchini. One plant of each should be plenty for us. And some dill also. love dill, and i just throw some between some tomato vines. It grows like weeds. I do so envy people with room for a large garden.

Everyone, make it a good day,

Freda

Didn't sleep well last night so it was kinda hard to get up and go to the gym but I did it. Then we stopped for a few groceries and to get our cash from our CU. I'm tired now. Have much to do today too. I have most of my daily work done but need to "bless" my whole house today. With such a late start it may not get all "blessed," though. ;)

I did really well yesterday on my eating plan...but the scale went up...that's all right... I know all about the flucuations by now. Don't always understand them but I know about them. Hopefully If I do well today it will be much better tomorrow.:^:

Freda - We only plant one or two plants. Definitely only one for zucchini! Sometimes two of tomatoes, and peppers. We do have enough room for plenty but we can't eat it and it's too much work. What we do is just about right...enough for us and still some to give to others...if things grow well. Last few years our garden has not done as well as it used to, not sure why but my dh continues to hope for better and keeps working on the soil.

Zoe - If it were just me, I'd plant in urns too. Just seems easier esp since we don't grow a lot even though we do have room for more. I don't know much about eggplant as last year was our first time and didn't do well. We got one small eggplant but a slug or something got to it.

Bobbi - doubt that the cost will decline now that Osama is gone. It is likely his second in command or someone will rise to take his place. Evil goes on and we will have to continue to fight it. Such is the way of this present earth.
Really too bad, isn't it?!!

Nona - not sure I remember you...but name does sound kind of familiar. Don't worry about knowing us all..just stop in when you can for some encouragement and to share how you're doing if you like.

Nancy - congrats on the weight loss and over a holiday too!

Hi Everyone,

"Worked" all day today at LLS. When I got home, I started work on a syllabus for the new course I will be teaching.

Getting into my Spring "clearning" (NOT really cleaning - more organizing) mood. Clearing out cabinets and closets and moving clothes around. Always makes me feel REALLY righteous.

Have a great evening,

Lynn

Good evening ~ almost good night

Day off tomorrow ~ yippee. Long day today ~ went over by 2 1/2 hours. Frustrating ~ seems no way to do it that doesn't end up being frustrating. If they try to get the admissions up by 4pm so I can process them before I leave at 6pm ~ then they are pushing and pushing ~ and it makes it a head spinning ~ dizzy pace. If they don't hurry it ~ then the admission comes late and I end up staying late. I asked my boss ~ what I should do ~ stay or leave when 6pm (my quitting time) comes ~ she said if I wanted to stay I could, but I didn't have to. But I feel bad for my coworkers ~ if I leave with the admission undone, and the desk piled up with charts with orders and those nurses have to start their shift ~ having to take care of that mess right off the bat ~ it makes for a horrible start to their shift. Then the whole rest of the night they feel behind. The poor day time charge nurse ~ sweetest person there is ~ is getting growly from being pushed and pushed.

Karen FL ~ must be the season for appliances going kaput. Our refrigerator/freezer ~ the other day ~ the food started to thaw. We called the repair people ~ they said that dust had built up on the back of it and caused it to over heat and shut off. So they cleaned it and it started back up again. Tonight when I went to get something for supper ~ it felt kind of soft ~ then I knew something wasn't right when I got out one of those weight watchers raspberry dark chocolate icecream bars (the ones Zoe mentioned in an earlier post) and took a bite and the raspberry ice cream drizzled out.

So, we have just spent the last hour transferring stuff from the freezer compartment of the fridge ~ to the big freezer. Thank goodness we have that. DH called the repair people to come back again tomorrow. Something's just not right.

Ok, guess I'd better get off to bed.

Have a good rest everyone.

Happy May, all! I hope the month is starting off strong for you.

I have a question. Does anyone Zumba? I was watching the commercials yesterday and thought it looked like a blast. I was wondering what you think. Is it something that a nearly-58-year-old-overweight-but-getting-better woman could do? Enjoy? Fill me in. Is it worth the investment? Thanks!!!! - Annie

Riemontana 05-03-2011 09:14 AM

Freda - great stories about the girls adventures! I have small raised garden beds. I usually plant one roma tomato, two hybrid "burpless" (like english cukes) cucumber plants and lots of herbs like basil. It starts slow but I can't eat them all when they get going.

Nona - I haven't tried zumba. Lots of excercise dvd's are available on netflix for trial if you are a member. Lord knows I have lots of videos that I have bought and never use because I don't like them.

Gayle - hang in there. I totally understand your desire to spare the next shift extra work.

Lynne - could you send some of that cleaning bug my way? LOL I seriously need to clean out my closet and send the giant pile of big clothes to goodwill !

Mary - it sounds like you had a tiring day but good for you - you stayed on plan. Container gardening is easier to maintain with weeding, etc, but you have to be careful to water and feed.

Some plants that need a little more room can be grown in a barrel or half barrel. Even potatoes can be grown this way. Old timers used to grow potatoes in a barrel, adding dirt as the plant moved up.

Donna How are you doing? Are you feeling better?

Sorry if I missed anyone. Have a good day.

Good Morning Girls,

Not too much going on today. Rained again last night and the ground is soaked. We're supposed to go to the kids first soccer games today and the coaches called last night and said that we would need boots. I've sat through almost everything, weather wise, with their games.

Donna, hope you're feeling better.

Gayle, Sorry you're still having to work so many hours. Isn't there an afternoon shift unit clerk? I know our admissions don't start coming in untill around 3. And we sometimes get at many as 6, so there is no way you could get all those done.

OKAnnie, Yes, i've done Zumba. LOVE it! Of course I do it at Curves and it's not the hardest. Not the easiest either. Kind of middle of the road. Do you have a Curves near you? I know some of the classes are more than I could manage. But we dance for an hour and it's actually fun. I'm dripping wet by the time we finish but I could go on. OH, and I'm 63, so i'm sure you can manage.

Rie, You can tell spring is coming, we all getting anxious to get out there and play in the dirt. Like I said, we don't plant much, but I want to try some more of the old tomatoes. And maybe some of the new breeds too, like the purple ones. Just for the way they look.

Lynn, I get in those moods occasionally. It's a good thing, that's probably the only reason my house stays liveable!

Everyone, have a good day,

Freda

Morning....Another quiet dull day down here. No bridge! We ate for 3 days on the vegies from friend's garden. The sqash casserole was good, but the new red potato salad was the best i ever made. Not sure why...usual ingredients...potatoes, onions, lf mayo and sf sweet pickle relish. But the red potato had just been dug. 4 quarters was satisfying. So portions were small.

Local corn is in and have 2 ears for tonight. I have tomatoes all over the kitchen. And a head of cabbage staring at me....

Bobbie....Did Hope get fired? I really have grown to like Meatloaf. And the Donald's daughter!

Rosie.....Strolled into the Nsg home......Holy Moly That's Awesome!

Zoe....We have used containers for garden growing for years. The prettiest whiskey tub was the mini egglant and white petunias. Don't use whiskey tubs for vines as when they trail over the wood the whiskey kills the vine.

Lynn....Glad you are enjoying DS book.

Gayle....Sorry back to work was so stressful. The Bermuda triangle now extends to Houston!

Nona...Deck ready for the party yet?

Donna....DH's buddy just returned to Colorado. Drove out there in his Fl shorts into 5" of snow. He is the only guy I know who wears Shorts....like short shorts...looks weird and bet chilly!

Oh, made Dh a quicky salad. Sliced roma tomato, chopped red pepper and a dash of Paul Newman's southwest dressing. He asked for it again. It took 1 minute to make.

Off to get my nails done....k3

Bobbolink 05-03-2011 09:55 AM

Good Morning.....a quick fly by here. I'm getting really frustrated with our weather. I had many of my geraniums out for the summer, I winter them over the winter in our breezeway. Yesterday was the second time we had to bring them back in. Our potted peach tree is getting hard to manage (tall)and we had to bring that in for the second time too. It's loaded with peaches about the side of a green olives. Last night it got down to 29 degrees, I covered everything already planted outside. I planted Petunia's on my grandparents grave, I'm sure the freeze last night killed them. I'll have to check on them later today. Last year we put in two zucchini plants and what we didn't eat fresh, I shredded and froze in 16oz. packages. I just used the last one a couple of days ago. It's a great filler for my diet tomato soup I eat for lunches. I have 4 bags of frozen tomatoes left, those will be gone by the time we get this years' crop. Last year we had our whole garden planted my May 1st, this year it's not even tilled. Too cold.....now that I've b****ed about the weather I'll go eat breakfast.
You all have a great day.
Crabby Maxine said today, "If you are what you eat, then maybe I should cut back on the prunes."

Hi KarenFla...I see we posted at the same time. Yes, Hope was voted off. I saw a video of Hope, Star and NeNe where Trump fired her. He said the combination of Star and NeNe would be hard to beat and Hope didn't have her heart into the challenges like those two did. He said they need to learn to get along.
I like meatloaf too, I hooted when Bussey was voted off. What a nut case.

jess1 05-03-2011 10:56 AM

Good Morning,All....
GORGEOUS day here! It's all so pretty and green and blooming! Spring!!

Thanks, everyone who asked... The lesions are starting to dry up, so I haven't had to lotion up since yesterday morning. I still have the muscle pains, but I can't tell if that's because of the shingles or because of the arthritis. My neck hurts all the time, anyway, so who can tell the difference? Overall, it's been a lot less than I would have expected, and I'm glad for that!

The cream that I like so well is "Rub-on Relief" (for a hyped-up website: http://www.losethebackpain.com/rubonrelief.html). For me, it's worked really, really well.

I keep meaning to say how much I enjoyed the visual and the story of the "football princess." That was great!

Rosey, PT, Lyn, Lynn, Freda, Nancy, Bobbi, Newbies, Gayle, KarenMOFLO, Mary, everyone... I hope your day is lovely! Status quo here, which is a good thing!! :carrot:

Hello everyone! Gosh I can't believe I had such a "senior moment" since the first of May!!! I couldn't understand why no one was posting!! DUH!! I was still watching the April thread!!! I guess my brain is still in a fog since we got home from PA. and my son is being "stupid" and my younger brother is going through tough times with his wife, she will be leaving on May 20th-- hope he can survive the next 17 days---she is a total nut case!! My cousin is here from Colorado and we met them for lunch both Sunday and Monday! I guess the brain was just spinning to fast and it didn't click that there was a new thread! I've only been doing this since 2007!!! DUH!!!

Rosey, you are looking really good! I sure wish I could find the confidence to even just open up the sewing machine that was my Mom's. I have had it cleaned and adjusted but it just seems so intimidating to me!! I remember taking sewing in school and I made an apron--then probably 30 years ago I took a stretch and sew class and made a T-shirt. I tell myself I just need to jump in with both feet--- but then I panic! My Mother used to make so many nice clothes.

Well, Now that my brain has caught up with the times-- I will try to get caught up with everyone in the next day or so. Right now, I need to go and get my wii workout in. This picture was taken Sunday at Cheddars where we had lunch.

Be back later.....

:) Hi Everyone - A quick flyby from me today. I won't be posting for a couple of days. Northern DD is here for a visit; haven't seen her since Christmas. Am having both DD together for dinner tonight. Anyway everyone have a good week.........catch you all later, eh?

Good evening ~

It was a nice day today. Beautiful weather. DH invited me on a bike ride. We went to that little park with the pond and fountain. Was just beautiful to sit there and relax ~ read a little.

This afternoon DH helped me hang up some wind chimes ~ outside the entryway/front door. I tried to take a picture, but they didn't show up very much. Another little project done :)

I need 10 more boxes from work to finish organizing the space in the linen closet. If you have to use boxes, I like it better and I feel like it looks nice and neat when they are all of a uniform size and shape. Maybe I'm silly :dizzy:

I use boxes for a lot of stuff ~ I cover them with gift wrap to make them look nice. I was collecting boxes from work for one of my "box projects", it was at another one of those times when I was frustrated with the job and hoping to find something else. I kept joking with my mom that I couldn't quit yet ~ I still needed more boxes :D

Well, I've got stuff to do to get ready ~ back to work tomorrow ~ so, I'd better quit fooling around here and get to busy.

Hope you all have had a nice day.

Take care

lynard21 05-03-2011 07:58 PM

I've been reading, but too busy (lazy?) to post. Sorry. My vegies are up in the garden and thriving..peas, lettuce and spinach. We've been having warm sunny weather, but in for rain and cold for the next few days.:(

Had a dramatic weekend with our DD...She suddenly had to move out of her apt in NYC...the woman she rented from told her that her dad lost his job and needed the room. We told our DD, that she couldn't legally do that since she'd paid rent through May, but the woman threatened to change the locks by Monday, and DD was talking about living out of her car. Over the weekend she found another place, which she will rent herself and find her own roommate. Only hitch was, she needed us to co-sign the lease and my DH refused. I gave in and co-signed anyway, so he got mad at me and called me an enabler - I disagreed and said we were only helping her...well, you can imagine. Luckily, she seems to already have found a roommate, and me and DH are on speaking terms again. You know, I thought being a parent would get easier when they grew up.

So I have been stressed:fr::tantrum: and have not been eating right. Have managed to work off some of it at the gym...but then seemed to have broken my toe last night while throwing the cat out of the bedroom. I have it taped and am taking some strong pain meds.

Love the photos everyone has been posting of themselves. You all look great.

Wish I had time for individual messages, but know that I relish all of your news.

Lyn

Hello Everyone!

First, let me appologize if I miss anyone. I had an incredible and stressful day at work and tomorrow will be the same. After that, it should ease up.

I went to graduate school to help people and somehow I ended up as an administrator who is in charge of all the people who help people and I have all the budgets, etc to manage. Truly, I love my work but there are those days..... and I am having one of those weeks! LOL

Oh, Lyn, so sorry about your toe - that really hurts. And, your troubles. I think that all of us can relate to the fact that we are parents forever. I once told my mom that I thought it got easier when your kids are grown and she just laughed at me....

Gayle, I wish I was that good at organizing. I mostly buy organizing stuff and then don't use it.

Donna, nice to hear that you are recovering!

Bobbi, I forgot about freezing the shredded zuchini. I will have to do that this year. We also chop our peppers, spread them out on a cookie sheet to freeze so they don't stick together, then store in a bag. A great addition to soups and sauces.

Karen31 glad you found us again!

Karen FL, I am so jealous about all the fresh veggies. It will be a while before we get them here in Montana. The farmers market won't even open til mid june.

Does anyone have any ideas for good tasting low carb bars or shakes that I can easily pack for a trip? I am flying so I can't take a cooler but I will be gone for a week.

I am trying to figure out how to post a photo here. I might be back later.

maryea 05-03-2011 09:34 PM

I slept in today so got a late start on things. Got my daily tasks done but that's about it. My dh had a memorial service to attend and then we went to an "update" from one of our timeshare companies (we have two). We love our timeshare but always know these "updates" mean they will try and sell us something...but at least they are not pushy, and they even gave us $25. We didn't even know about the $25 at first...just thought we were getting new directory and the talk, and it will come in handy. My dh says now he will take me out for Mother's Day.:D I like to go out even though I dread it too due to my tendency to overeat.

Came home and had hamburgers and veggies for dinner. I'm a little high in carbs today and near the end of my calorie limit. We are about to go to church so at least i won't be here being tempted to eat all evening but think I'd better go to bed as soon as i get home. ;) The scale was surprisingly kind to me today but I'm still just going up and down, up and down. Will be fun to see whether in a couple more weeks I'm actually any lower.

My gym offers Zumba and I was thinking about taking it but couldn't work out the schedule. I don't want to spend my life at the gym!

Hope you all have had a good day and have a good evening! See you tomorrow!

eta: I got the vanilla protein drink form the Ideal Chocolate Drink company today. It's very good and very filling too. I think I prefer the chocolate but they are actually both very tasty. I had one drink before dinner, ate my hamburger with tomatoes, pickles and sweet onion and am now stuffed! My hamburger was about 3 oz and on a small bun.
