Welcome all newbies, like Karen said, we got room at the table. :grouphug:I'm on my way to chiropractor again so will catch up later. About those free anti-virus programs, I too wondered why my AVG let all those viruses slip in and the cp geek told me they can slip by the best paid for programs. He got one from clicking on our local newspaper last week and his pastor friend got one from Facebook. Who'd thunk?
So please install them even if you have a good program on your computer. Remember to update them before you run their scan and he said to do it once a month. I'm thinking I'll do it twice a month since so many viruses snuck by. My computer runs like it new right now and I plan on keeping it that way. Catch ya all later!

Good morning ~ it is a sunny day again. So glad ~ I feel so much better when it is sunny.

Welcome Lola. Don't feel like a party crasher. We welcome the new ones. I welcomed Gonnadoitthistime yesterday ~ the post right after hers ~ but I called her Becky ~ the name she listed as her real name. It was a short post though so you may have missed it. The other ladies do a wonderful job of making people feel welcome.

I actually felt kind of silly yesterday, because I posted several times and worried that you all would think I do nothing but sit her and wait for posts to come in :o

Better get off here and quit playing around ~ got some errands to do.

Hello to everyone else. Hope you all are having a nice day.

Take care

Morning from bright sunny chilly florida.....Perfect weather for a marathon walk. In fact what I think of as chilly Lynn et all coming from snow may find just cool. (55)

Welcome to all the newbies....lola, gonnadoit, webwoman. Missed seeing Becky's sign in...probably more...sorry Just a BIG HELLO and Welcome here!

Gayle...good job on WI. Doing that over the holidays is really special. Pat yourself on the back and give you a hug for me.

Zoe...think Mary and Dh were doing a long RVing trip.

Bobbi...You reminded me to clean up my pc. Now have to remember all the different passwords...and that drives me insane. Of course doesn't take much to push me over the edge. You say that you still wake up with a headache....maybe need mattress change or a board under you. I'm sleeping on plywood since August...really helps.

Donna....a dearest friend sent me a refrig sticker that said you can't choose your family but you can choose your friends and signed it Love, Jeannie. I hung it and within 6 months she passed away. I look at that every day and smile. But still ticked off because i have so much to tell her and she doesn't answer the phone!

Karen...love the idea of all of us at the table. Bet it would get loud! I'll come help you return the cave to Woman. Hear us roar! Now if that doesn't date me for sure.

Me....gesh that sound you heard about 20 minutes ago was my heart exploding! I ran into the scale and sneaked a peek and showed a 10lb GAIN! I hopped off so fast and then saw that knob had turned and was over 10lbs out of balance. PHEW....Don't WI until Monday so thats what I get for peeking.

In a great meal planning rut this week. Make dinner and turns out to be enough for 2 meals. So cooking every other day. Lola, I was making mega bunch of treats/lunch for the bridge club the past few years every Thursday from articoke dip, casseroles, cakes and a zillion of hi cal treats. I used the Golden girls to keep me on track...would check in every few hours during this marathon cooking spree and got so I didn't even taste the stuff. Used DH to taste test. Didn't lick the spoons even. Cooking for 80+ people so it was a lot. I am so thankful they got me thru it and when I directed last month the one day I immediately fell back into the mode. I lost weight even while cooking my storms. They helped so much!!! (thanks again guys)

Off to play bridge....hugs karen3

Karen31 01-07-2011 10:46 AM

Well. I'm back... I did my first set up of Wii exercise this morning. It was kind of fun...I did a bicycle thing, hula hoops and steps. Did it for 38 minutes and burned 170 calories! Not enough but it was a start! I also went down last night and pulled all my exercise stuff out and the treadmill won't run right now. Tim promised he would work on it today and see if he could figure out why it isn't getting power. Wouldn't you know it--- when I get all set up and have a routine in my head the treadmill says, Not today!! But I went ahead and did like just 5 minutes on the recumbent bike and another 5 on the gazelle. You can also track that exercise on the Wii--- still have to figure that one out. On my wii this morning it showed my wii Fit age as 56--I was happy since I'm going to be 59 next month! Was a little surprised too thought it would show 90 something!!!
Which reminds me--- all the new ladies-- under support groups we have a "Sticky" up for Age 50+/Golden Girls birthdays if you would like to add yours. It sure makes me feel good when I get birthday wishes from all my GG's!!!
Well, I think I am going to go and enjoy a cup of coffee right now. I haven't even had a cup yet... decided to jump on that wii and then deal with the rest of the day! Anyway, so far I'm liking it!

Thanks Karen for the offer of help--- boy wouldn't that be a surprise to him to see all these GG's come down those stairs!!! HEHE!!

jess1 01-07-2011 10:55 AM

Good Morning, All...
Just checking in...

PT/Zoe, now that you've made the decision, it's just logistics. And, after a few major hassles and fumbles, you and DH will "get your groove on" and will find ways to accommodate. I have a feeling that you aren't unduly hesitant about speaking up! Just think: Burrowing under the covers at 6 a.m., snuggling with TurtleTut and/or whomever, instead of driving in the snow.... bliss!

So many newbies we have! I welcome each and every one of you! It's a very good group!

Everything here is just status quo! My main activity lately is slathering lotion on my poor, cracked, painful, dry hands! OMG, but we need some moisture here! Weight is stable. As long as I can restrain/moderate my starch intake, I'm fine. However, once I have a trigger, I'm always back to square one. So, I seem to be doing fine with 5 pieces of peppermint candy (the little round thingies), and so far, so good! I don't keep bread in the house or any kind of baked goods, all killer foods for me. You know, I'm about OVER this! I've been thinking "weight" for the last 30 years, and I'm pretty sick of it.

Oh, Glynne, I had to laugh (gently) at your worries about posting too much
Quote:

I actually felt kind of silly yesterday, because I posted several times and worried that you all would think I do nothing but sit her and wait for posts to come in
... often times, I'll just pop in to see what's happening but I won't respond because I don't want people thinking that I have no other life!!

Better get rolling! Everyone, have a good day. Hang in there! Be safe!

glynne 01-07-2011 10:56 AM

Karen31 ~ good job getting right to the exercise this morning. Now relax and enjoy that cup of coffee :)

Freda ~ you mentioned that you plan and have some snacks in the car for when you are out and about and get hungry. What kinds of things do you keep in the car? Looking for ideas.

More later

Heart Rate: Why It Matters More Than You Might Think
Most of us grew up in the days before gym teachers talked about resting heart rates and target heart rates. When coaches at school wanted us to work harder, they would just yell, "Hustle!" When we overdid it, we would flop down onto the ground for a few minutes until we felt better.

But now that we’re older, the whole heart rate business is not something we can ignore. Recent research reveals the reasons...

A study of 50,088 adults found that for women under age 70, every increase of 10 beats per minute (bpm) in resting heart rate (number of heartbeats per minute while at rest) boosted the risk of dying from a heart attack by 18%. (No such association was found among women 70 or older.)
In a study of 129,135 postmenopausal women, those whose resting heart rate was above 76 bpm were 26% more likely to have or to die from a heart attack than those whose resting heart rate was below 63 bpm.
A strong heart pumps blood more efficiently, so it doesn’t need to beat as fast. Regular aerobic exercise can lower your resting heart rate -- but only if you work out at the right intensity. According to Wayne Westcott, PhD, a Quincy College exercise science instructor, if you go too easy during workouts, you miss out on cardiovascular benefits... but if you push too hard, you might experience light-headedness, nausea and a higher-than-normal rise in blood pressure that could dangerously overwork your heart if you have hypertension. Here’s how to gauge the right workout intensity for you...

Find out your current resting heart rate. First thing when you wake up, take your pulse at your wrist or neck for one minute.

What resting heart rate suggests about fitness level for women in midlife and beyond...

Excellent Below 60 bpm
Very good 60 to 65 bpm
Good 66 to 70 bpm
Average 71 to 75 bpm
Worse than average Above 75 bpm

Plan to do a cardio workout at least three times per week. Good options include brisk walking, running, dancing, cycling and swimming, Dr. Westcott said. (Get your doctor’s OK before beginning or intensifying any exercise regimen.)

Determine your target heart rate. Your ideal heart rate while exercising depends on two factors -- your age and current fitness level. Dr. Westcott explained that the problem with the target heart rate charts often seen online or at gyms is that they generally are based only on age, not on fitness level, so you could wind up working out too hard or not hard enough. And though one target heart rate formula (called the Karvonen method) does account for resting heart rate, it requires more complicated calculations and, in Dr. Westcott’s opinion, yields guidelines that may be too high. Better: Follow the guidelines in the charts below. To track heart rate during your workout, use a heart rate monitor (about $100 at sporting-goods stores). Remember: Your warm-up and cool-down do not count as time in your target range.

If your resting heart rate currently is above 70 bpm...

In your... Your target heart rate is... Your cardio workout should last...
40s 120 to 130 bpm 15 to 20 minutes
50s 110 to 120 bpm 15 to 20 minutes
60s 105 to 115 bpm 15 to 20 minutes
70s 95 to 105 bpm 15 to 20 minutes
80s 80 to 90 bpm 15 to 20 minutes

If your resting heart rate is 60 to 70 bpm...

In your... Your target heart rate is... Your cardio workout should last...
40s 130 to 140 bpm 20 to 25 minutes
50s 120 to 130 bpm 20 to 25 minutes
60s 115 to 125 bpm 20 to 25 minutes
70s 105 to 115 bpm 20 to 25 minutes
80s 90 to 100 bpm 20 to 25 minutes

If your resting heart rate is below 60 bpm...

In your... Your target heart rate is... Your cardio workout should last...
40s 135 to 145 bpm 25 to 30 minutes
50s 125 to 135 bpm 25 to 30 minutes
60s 120 to 130 bpm 25 to 30 minutes
70s 110 to 120 bpm 25 to 30 minutes
80s 95 to 105 bpm 25 to 30 minutes

Adjust your workout intensity as needed. Check your resting heart rate monthly -- as it improves, intensify your workouts according to the guidelines above. For safety: Reduce workout intensity and/or duration if you feel exhausted rather than invigorated after exercising... your muscles feel sore for more than a day after working out... you are recovering from an illness... you feel stressed... or the pollen count or air pollution index is high.

Morning Everyone. Hope this is the best day ever. Freezing fog here in Juneau today, ouch. On top of yesterdays snow, and last nights warming, it is way slick outside-- I wanna stay home instead of heading off to work. (Okay, I will stop whining and leave on time, darn it. TGIF!!!)

Omigosh, so many names to remember....Gayle and Zoe, you are really good at it. I think it will be a little while before I make the attempt, like others have said I certainly don't want to hurt feelings or leave anyone out.

I can identify so closely with needing to have the triggers out of the house. I can't touch most baked goods without it activation crazy cravings. (Proved it to myself this holiday season) But, I also proved to myself I can STOP, think and start over. I like the acronym "HALT" For Hungry or habit, Angry, Lonely, or Thirsty/Tired. Am I really hungry when I eat, or one of the others?

It works to help me pause a bit before mindless eating.

Bobbolink 01-07-2011 01:20 PM

Newbies can do what I did a few years ago when I joined, type everyone's name on your word processor with a little note about their bio's, kids, grandkids, state you live in, etc. Then print out the list.

Karen3...I have 5 pages of passwords I typed up on my word processor, all in alphabetical order and all passwords in red. I printed them out and put in a binder with clear sleeves. I do the same thing with my large family, all birthdays are in order starting with the January birthdays, their addresses and phone numbers. It's easy to open up each month and see who I should congratulate or send a card to. I leave the information on my cp so I can make changes for new births. I leave these on my saved file to update, add or delete. I don't put my really important passwords on it like my banking account or credit card. I did print those few out but promply deleted the information.

gonnadoitthistime 01-07-2011 02:36 PM

Hi all.
Not going to try to remember names at this point, hope you forgive me! MIDLAND MI, BRRR. I grew up in the Detroit area, moved south for about 12 years, went back for a year when family member was ill, and that year was horrid! That winter I think the only time I got warm all the way through was in the shower!
Headaches
Bobbi, your situation with those headaches is just heartbreaking, so glad you seem to have such a good attitude. I tend to not handle pain well, get quite whiney when it continues for weeks, sure hope you get some improvement soon.
I have been sticking to a "movement" plan, just trying to get more activity in my day, including walking, aerobics, dancin with the headphones on, stretching, light weights. It seems to be making me feel much better, and the variety is helping me.
Thanks for welcoming words here! Next time I work on learning some names.

LolaCrane 01-07-2011 04:02 PM

Wow - to remember who everybody is!

You all sound as though you've been doing this for a while! Hopefully, I'll get the hang of it sooner rather than later.

Have just arrived home after fixing blackened salmon and a wonderful salad for my elderly gentleman! He's lost three pounds so far, this week - and is really jazzed, while I'm dealing with the pound I GAINED yesterday after my digression! Have managed to avoid straying today (by avoiding the super market).

I think Freda asked how I cope when I'm doing parties (as a personal chef), and the truth is I seldom partake of anything that I actually create! Seriously. My out-of-control eating is usally done in private, a relic of my old eating disorder. And living alone, I get plenty of privacy!

I cooked non-stop for dinner parties and houseguests all through the Holidays. LOTS of baking. Lots of brunches! But it was the See's Candies that I binged on, and icecream in the freezer that brought me down. I can't believe that just a few days on Atkins, and increasing my physical activity has had such a result (5 lbs - well 4lbs because of yesterday's fries) - I'm actually jazzed enough to leash up the hound and go walk another mile. I'll be walking again later with my walking buddy, and tomorrow morning, first thing - we're doing a mini marathon (for us) - a solid hour, three miles around the reservoir to look at birds.

I'm hoping that a daily check-in here will give me some accountablity. Ever onward!

Nancyoyo 01-07-2011 10:39 PM

Hey G.G.s,
So much going on here today! And so many posts here I want to respond to. Where’s that big old table the Karens were talking about? Love the idea of that. I can just imagine all the G.G.s gathered round it for a big old gab-fest!

Zoe, I actually like having SO home most of the time! He’s usually in one room doing his thing, while I’m in another room doing mine. That way we’re not invading each other’s space. If it weren’t for the lack of a paycheck, I wouldn’t mind if he never went back to work. (Of course the fact that I don’t have to get up at 4:30AM, 5 days a week, to fix him breakfast & a lunch to take has nothing to do with that!) About being Nancy1, I sorta like the sound of NCNancy. Gotta nice ring to it. Also, a few days ago, Bobbi I think, said something about seeing you as a flower child. Funny, that’s how I always picture you. Hard to believe you’re actually a high-powered exec.

Donna, you mentioned having to put lotion on for dry hands. Earlier today I was thinking about what a pain that was, because then I end up doing something in the kitchen & have to wash it off. Later, as I was putting a little olive oil on my potatoes to bake, I had one of those light bulb moments - olive oil?!! Guess I’ll be using that as my hand lotion, won’t mind getting that taste in my food. Why didn’t I think of that before? Peppermint candies? I’ve been using those little chocolate covered mint patties as my crutch since I started losing weight. I like ending my meals with something sweet, & one of those seems to do the trick for me. Also works when I need a chocolate fix. And I don’t love them, so I never feel the need to eat the whole bag.

Donna & Gayle, I think all the G.G.s probably think I have no other life & nothing else to do from the length of my posts. Well, sometimes I don’t think I do. Of course there’s always housework, but darn, who wants to do that?

Bunti, I like that acronym - HALT. That’s exactly what I try to do when I want to eat. I have a hard time on the name thing too sometimes, even though I’ve been hanging around here for months. I try to take notes on things I want to respond to.

Bobbi, Wow! are you organized. I’ll have to try that hint about the G.G. bio’s.

Becky, good for you on your “movement” plan. Exercise seems to be something I can’t force myself to do. I’ve been trying to sneak some in by parking as far away as I can in parking lots, & making extra trips for everything I do around the house. I’m hoping even little things eventually add up.

Lola, I can really empathize with the out-of-control eating in private. That’s always been my problem. And, I can cook large amounts of food for others without needing to eat any. I’d cook large family dinners for holidays, & hardly eat anything, but when everyone went home, look out! That’s when the pigging-out began. Now I am learning to do the HALT thing Bunti mentioned, & it’s working. I’ve been only letting myself eat when I’m really hungry. Except for the nightly snack I allow myself. It’s now past my usual time for that, so…..

Goodnight Everyone.

Nancy

ellabella 01-08-2011 12:45 AM

Hey all....count me in as one who checks in every so often during the day but doesn't post 'cuz you'd think all I did was sit in front of my computer........Oh, well, if that's what it takes to keep us on track, then I'm all for it. Dh is fast asleep, it appears to have snowed a bit tonight - less than an inch from the looks of it, and I am not yet sleepy enough to take my night time cold medicine and go to bed myself. Nice to find lots of new posts since this morning! And, NCNancy, if the length of our posts corresponds with how much of a life we have, then I must REALLY be deficient in that category, because once I start, I just ramble right on. Oh, and as for the "high powered executive" reference...ummmm....I've never called myself that, you know. I have a job - one that I soon hope not to have, period. I was once a fringe flower child, I guess you could say. Had the long straight hair down to my bum, and wore the low-waisted bell bottoms, lots of India Cloth and hand embroidered stuff...blah, blah, blah...but in retrospect, I was more of a literary type in college, and hung out with people who liked to have long, intense discussions about politics, religion, philosophy...you know the types. Sure, we did it while swigging wine many a time, but believe it or not, I never did any kind of drugs whatsoever, so I sure wasn't THAT kind of flower child! And now, I like to think of myself as "type-free"...not fitting any mold in particular, don't you know?
PT!!!! We had Greek Pizzas for supper tonight! Remember when you introduced us to them? Omigawd, they are Soooo delicioso! I am forever in your debt. Did I tell you that we created a taco version using the string cheese but then instead of feta, using shredded Mexican cheese? I always add chunks of chicken on top, but when we're doing "Greek" I saute it in a balsamic & olive oil mix, and when we're doing the taco pizza, I saute the chicken with a package of taco seasoning and add a little H2o. Oh, and with the Greek, I use a can of Del Monte diced tomatoes with balsamic & olive oil, and with the taco, I use diced tomatoes with green chiles. Yum. I could eat another one right now (I make them on Pita bread, and there are two more sitting in the fridge) which is, of course, why I'm typing instead.
Bunti, I am actually quite awful at remembering everyone's name. I do my best, but frequently leave someone out, and only realize it after the fact. That's what's so neat about the GG's, tho...nobody holds a faulty memory against you.
Finally getting a bit drowsy. Guess I'll get myself to bed. G'nite all!
:grouphug:

the slim me 01-08-2011 09:52 AM

Good Morning Golden Girls,

We got a lot of snow last night. I went to Curves to fill in for my DIL andgot off at 6. The roads were a mess and traffic was sliding all over. I only live about 5 miles and it took me almost an hour to get home. I slid throught a yellow light. Tried to stop and the suv did not agree! I was really glad to get home.
But they will have the roads cleared and salted this morning. At least Michigan know how to deal with snow.

Bobbi, I make an attempt to be organized. I have a binder too, with all the information. Everything is in there somewhere. I have to re-do it to make it easier.

Gayle, Now you know we don't care how many times you post! Always glad to hear what is going on with you. So, if it helps, come as often as you want. As for the snacks I carry in the car: I always have suckers. I know, sugar, but they are low calorie and take along time to eat. Usually hold me untill I get where I am going. Also, granola bars, pretzles measured into individual baggies, animal crackers. If I know I am going to be out a long time I might add vegetables or an apple. What ever you like. Sometimes you just need a "little something"

Karen3, That must have been quite a shock, seeing the extra 10# on the scale. Good you noticed the change before it sailed across the room! Or at least I would have been tempted to throw it. All the while yelling "you lying piece of junk"!

Bunti, we all have triger foods that we can't have in the house. Mine is corn chips. I will eat them untill I am sick. So, I don't buy them! Easy! I have a piece of dark chocolate every day. I can controle that. and dark chocolate is so good for you and it cures my chocolate cravings. Know thyself. And remember, you can't eat it if it's not there.

goingdoitthistime, You were born in Detroit and moved to Ky. I was born in Ky and moved to Detroit. What part of Ky. do you live in? I like the idea of doing more too. I always park in the back of the parking lot and take the stairs. Every step makes a difference.

Lola, I can identify with the secret, alone eating. I do fine all day, eat healthy, normal portions. My "bad" time is at night. I use food to comfort, ease stress, and distract me from pain in my legs, which gets worse when I sit down. If I didn't eat at night I would have no problem at all. Fun to have someone to walk with. I used to walk with a friend, but he moved away. And walkng alone is no fun.

Nancy, My DH isn't working and it drives me nuts! I'm used to having time alone and I NEED it. It's fairly new, so manybe I will get used to it. Hopefully!

Karen31, Glad you're enjoying that WII. We actually have one, bought it for the Grands. I'll have to give it a try. Anything to make exercise fun.

Donna, my hands are always dry and chapped too. That is not good. Cracking allows "bugs" to get in. but I have to wash my hands a million times a day. I try to use lotion every time but it's just not possible. But like Nancy mention, olive oil is great. It's always been used for beauty purposes. Lots of women use it on their face too.

Z, hope you kick that virus soon.

Everyone, make it a good day.

Freda

Hello.....I am not posting personals I am gonna whine. Really ticked off and feeling nasty. Have 2 choices write here or EAT.

Left here after posting yesterday for bridge. Picked up partner and drove down. That was the last of a nice day. Played bridge like I didn't know what I was doing. Drove back to partner's car as I turned into the parking lot there was a Hugh boom. Nothing in the road, thought the undercarrage of my car(Nancy) had run over something. Walked around the car...nothing....2 miles later an idiot light comes on with a fuzzy horseshoe. Now they don't have a cheat sheet with what do these little icons mean....I pulled into Nissan and said to service manager what does this little icon mean and from 20' away she says you are getting a flat tire I can hear the air escaping. 4" NAIL! They could plug it. Got home and had message from one of the team that we planned to go to the Sarasota tournament next month canceling. Darn it. So disappointed. No tournament.

It isn't even 10am and I have cooked white egg omlettes, cleaned the kitchen picked up the house and started my 2nd load of wash. Plus cleaners are here so this will be a better day. Checked into club website and surprised self we came in 4th. Thought we were dead last with my brain f*rts.

Amazing thing happened when I got home Dh had dinner plated. Wow for a man who only cooks hard boiled eggs....puts eggs in pot of water and boils until water is gone. what a nice thing. I was so upset with the cancel that didn't finish dinner. Left a 1/2 plate on the counter for later and threw it out this am.

Hmmmmm....hear this the more I write the better my attitude is getting. And I didn't stuff my face...Thanks guys...GG's do it again.

Better, still really disappointed, but may be able to find another team and won't cancel motel reservations for a few days.

BBL, hugs karen3

ps think today is Lynn's DD walk marathon and it is already 63 and bright sun.
