Bobbi, when I retired I had the option of continuing with all my health, drug and dental insurance. I had considered dropping the dental but I added up the premiums and compared them to the work that was done over the last 5 years and knew I'd be a fool to drop that one. When DH retires all his health insurance is discontinued so I have family coverage so we're both covered.

I like to take a nap and I do occasionally but then I can't sleep at night. I'm wide awake really late. DH naps at every opportunity and goes to bed really early. I always joke that he needs a nap after supper so he'll have enough energy to go to bed.

Good to see you back again Eileen. I'm glad you've not given up.

Yoyo, sounds like you've been busy with this upcoming move. Any thoughts on what you'll do when the company moves?

Welcome to the thread, Renee. Just jump right in as the others have suggested. You'll soon feel at home with the Golden Girls.

Waves to everyone else.

I've been having hot flashes all night. Sometimes I'll go a few weeks and hardly notice if I'm having any and then I'll have a few weeks where I'm never cold. I was at my niece's baby shower tonight and I could've stripped down to my unmentionables I was so hot. Fortunately, they don't last long and then I cool off pretty fast. I'm having one now as I type. The last 5 years I taught I never wore any type of pullover sweater to work because I would almost faint from the heat. I always kept a cardigan in the cupboard just in case it got cold but I seldom had to wear it. Enough of that for now. Must go to bed and get a few winks in before morning. zzzzzzzzzz

Good Morning . . .

Drastic change in wind direction and temperature overnight -- actually had to close my bedroom window at 2 am Forecast is calling for partly sunny/partly cloudy today but so far I'm only seeing the cloudy part.

Gas prices across most of the more western areas of Canada dropped back a bit overnight -- but not here. I'm putting off filling up as long as I can, but that will be tomorrow.

Today laundry (how thrilling) and then packing (for that little trip to North Carolina). That's more thrilling, but the cats tend to panic as soon as I haul out a suitcase. It becomes a constant round of picking a cat out so I can put something else in. Also hope to do a little machine quilting if I have time.

Do have to fit in a little trip to the drugstore to pick up some meds and, just to give you a little chuckle, I'm taking in a vial of Metformin that I cannot get the 'child-proof' top off. Guess I need a child. Sure, I could break it, but since I'm going anyway, I decided I feel just snarly enough to point it out to them since they put it on there in the first place.

Have a good day and I will see you all later . . .

Eh, take my word for it, it's not all it's cracked up to be BUT, I am still eternally grateful every time I watch the weather around the country and see all the struggles. I actually found an old windshield ice scraper in a box I was going through in the garage last weekend. Tossed it across the room so fast you'da thought it was a snake

OK, this may sound bizarre, but I am so jealous of your getting dental work. My teeth are just pathetic - aside from umpteen years of coffee and tea (and ) along with diet pills and horrid nutrition in my 20s, I don't think even Lumineers would help. I'm going to need a whole new set I'm holding out for implants at about a bazillion $$$ but I have to quite the cigs once and for all first. In the 'prep' stage for that little project and new teeth is the number one thing on my list of reasons to quit.

Too lazy to try and go back and start over so sorry for the oddball format here

Well, I would dearly love to just take early retirement and stay home gardening, crafting, and just putzing in general - DH is doing well enough that the bills would be covered but the entertainment budget would be limited to DVD rentals - not nearly as much fun as our weekend excursions we can afford the gas for now. Soooo, unless the Publishers Clearing House van pulls up sometime in the next couple of months that's (sadly) not a viable option. I've updated my resume and already started putting out feelers. Fortunately, I have enough notice that I feel pretty good about the possibilties of finding something really good by the time we lock the door for the last time. Quite honestly, I have to credit 3FC with getting me to a point where I have enough self confidence that I'm going to be able to present myself pretty well in interviews (despite my advanced age )

Aren't critters just too funny? My 'girls' get VERY excited when the suitcase comes out because they know it means a trip to the doggie hotel - which they just love. I can't pack too far in advance because once they see that suitcase they get completely uncontrollable every time they hear the car keys.

OK, enough out of me for one day
Have a fabulous day!

Naturally, the Pharmacist had no problem getting the top off that bottle. -- how to feel old, dumb, and feeble in one easy lesson -- but I asked that they put a note on my file to give me regular flip lids from now on.

Yep the cats seem to think they can go with me if I don't see them in there or something. I opened it up on the bed and left it for them to investigate before I start actually trying to pack.

Hi all....snuffle snuffle...still coming down with either summer cold or allergies. Have to wait a week and see if any better. Cold lasts a week and allergies forever.

Speaking of allergies turns out that is what's wrong with poor Dash. The tests came back and he is allergic to so much stuff. Soybeans and chicken are the biggys. All kinds of grasses and pollens. But not cat dander, but yes to human dander...which caused the vet to laugh hysterically! Turns out most dog food dry and canned has chicken or soy in it. Yup main ingredant in chopped beef is chicken! He now has Vension dried kibbles with lamb'n rice canned meat. He has to have shots for about 15 months every other day, but I can do them at home. So ladies, I am now not only reading labels for my diet, but the dog's too. Plus DH's diabetic meals......life is such fun.

Too weary to do personals but hugs all. Welcome Renee....this is the best place to get surpport. Taint much we haven't done or tried on this trip to thinness.............. bed for me....nite, karen3

'Evening Chickies

A big to Rin Renee ,glad that you can join us. As I'm still working full time I'm only here at times, but find the support and help great, especially the accountability thread. Once you commit to yourself to be accountable a lot of changes and weight loss can follow. So many of the Chickies have been an inspiration to me, so come along.

Thanks Isabella for the encouragement.

Hope that all of you are well. I'm loving the cooler Autumn weather that is just starting to hit us in New England.

Here's a wee trick I used for night time hot flashes. I can't stand to have a hot pillow, which can easily happen . To remedy this I take a flexible blue gel ice pack, freeze it, then slip it into my pillow case. The pillow case protects my face from feeling too cold and seems to cool off the rest of me.

Well work is still too busy and we now have a full house of 43 women at the residential drug treatment center. Great that so many women are seeking treatment and it is such hard emotional work. Our new counselor has started and should work out nicely.

Still no word from Lynn ?? That is sad and scary, miss her.

Wishing all of you a happy Wednesday.

Eileen

Bottle caps and kitty cats; I AM in the right place! Idiot moments (that reads plural), and a side life of four legged fur.

I have a dog, a macaw, and 2 darlin' beloved cats. Oh, and a DH at home. Kids all flew the coop. My one darlin' cat, Sasha (I call her Purdy; she knows she is!), needs to sleep between my legs - usually right at my crotch. So, if I need a potty break in the night, or simply want to do something selfish - like turn over, I have to shimmy up in the bed, being oh so careful not to wake her. Then, I shimmy back down, making sure I don't accidentally nudge her.

Why I do this, I have no idea! If it were DH, I'd smack him back to his side of the bed; one of the GSs, I'd escort them back to their bed. But it's my Purdy we're talking about here - that one animal that comes along in life and your heart is mush. She knows it too; I think she takes advantage of me
Ah well . . .

Someone asked what type of diet I was doing. Well . . . mostly I'm just trying the KMMS diet. It works well during the day, but night time, now that's a different story! I'm weak, I'm tired, I had an unauthorised chicken nugget during the day, so I'll "start" tomorrow . . . on and on the excuses go!
I'm usually asking my "why" as I'm sitting w/a box of cookies, etc. Never, ever would I eat healthy at night. No clue why.

Enter the KMMS diet. Keep My Mouth Shut. When used, it works. So, I find myself sitting here trying not to think about . . . stuff (stuffing, stuffing me . . ).

That's where I'm hoping accountability and support will make the difference.
I had been peeking into this site so much, I was beginning to feel like a pervert, so, figured I'd join up. The most I figured you would do, would be tell me to take a hike . . . but, I didn't really think you would! You all seem so very nice, so supportive, so caring. Funny too!

Thanks for the hot flash tip Eileen. I hate a hot pillow too and I'm always turning it over.

Meowee, don't feel bad about not getting the child proof cover off your pills. I thought I was going to have to take an axe to one of mom's bottles last month. I couldn't budge it but DS got it off in a flash. And you're right a small child could probably get it off immediately.

Yoyo, seems you have everything under control. You're right about more confidence with weight loss (despite our advanced ages, ). I was at a baby shower last night and my mother-in-law didn't know me when I walked in. I couldn't get her eye to send her a wave but she saw me eventually when we got up to get our lunch. She said that I looked like a young girl walking in and she didn't know me. MIL has macular degeneration so I'll forgive her for not recognizing me. But just the fact she thought I was a young girl made me feel good.

Karen3, how are you going to keep human dander out of the house? You and DH will have to sleep in the doghouse.

Yes, Renee, you are in the right place. KMMS, Now, that's a diet we could all adopt at times. Have a look at the Accountability thread in the sticky area. Some of us edit our post every day to keep ourselves accountable. You can start any time of the month. I've been doing this since April and it really helps to know I have to type it out for the world to read.

I've been flat out all day long. To start, I slept in until 10 am!!! Mom always sleeps well in the morning and DH gives mom her pills before he goes to work in the morning so I don't have to get up at 6:30 to do that. I had so much to do today before I took mom shopping and of course I didn't get it all done. My exercise got cut short and I didn't get to eat as well as I'd like. I didn't eat too much but what I ate was not all "good" food. And by this evening I was starving and ended up eating an ice cream cone. Not the worst choice but too late in the evening. I'll bet that sits on my stomach all night long. Tomorrow will be better because we're not going out, or I should say mom is not going out. We did have a good shopping trip though and we were out about 6 hours. You'd think mom would be tired out after that excursion, but no it's almost 11:30 pm and she's wide awake and wants me to sit with her but her room is so hot I can't sit long. DH and DS put in the wood furnace just before we got home and the house is so hot that I had to open the patio door to let a little cool air in.

About time I turned in and went to bed so I don't sleep in tomorrow.

Morning all!

The weather here is finally cooling off a bit. For the second night in a row we turned the ac off and opened the windows. Too bad it wasn't this cool when our power was out...it would have been more tolerable then.

Nothing exiting happening here. My MIL is still here and may be for a while more. It may take another week or so till her power in Houston is back on. She lost her house in Katrina,so at least she has a house to go home to although it did have some damage to it.

School is going well, but VERY busy with paperwork, online lesson plans and form after form being thrown at me.

The puppies are doing well and 2 of them have gone to new homes which breaks my heart. They went to "perfect match" people. We have 4 left and can't decide which one(s) to keep.

Retired, I can empathize with those rotten "power surges". I went through menopause TWICE and occasionally still get a flash, but thankfully not very often anymore.

Good Morning all!
I'm cleaning out some old computer documents and ran across the one below. I don't remember if I posted it so I'll run it, then delete it from my files.

Quote:

ICED COFFEE. I save a lot of money making my own iced coffee. I brew a pot of coffee and then pour the leftover coffee into an ice cube tray and freeze. I can add these cubes to iced coffee and they don't water down the drink.

KITCHEN STORAGE. If you have a small kitchen or pantry, it can be hard to find storage, especially for odd items. Then, I hung a shoe organizer over the inside of my pantry door. I placed my boxes of storage bags, foil, plastic wrap as well as all my spices and odd things I need to grab quickly, like baby bibs or straws, in each of the compartments.

BANANA TIP. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
QUICK SCRUB. While I'm waiting around for the shower water to warm up, I grab a brush and use that water to scrub the tub. Doing this daily keeps the shower clean without wasting extra time or water!
SCREEN CLEANER. I learned from a technical support person that coffee filters are perfect to use as non-static dusting cloths for computer screens. The filters also work well to clean magnetic contacts on printer cartridges, which cannot be wiped with anything that may leave fiber residue.
CLEAN A VASE. To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill it with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets. Swish and then rinse. The glass should be clear again.
BOTTLE OPENER. At the office I could not open a bottle of vanilla extract. Because I had no rubber gloves, I wrapped a rubber band around the top and twisted. With little effort I had that top off in seconds. I went ahead and left the rubber band in place, so I wouldn't forget my own tip!
WARRANTY ORGANIZER. When I need to save receipts and warranties for products purchased, I use my scanner to save the image on my computer. I have a folder for warranties and another for receipts. The name of the image is the item purchased. If I need to read a warranty, I have it on the computer. This is much easier than looking through paper folders.

Hi . . .

The sun is shining and it's a beautiful day . . . I've done the fun quartlery scraping trip to the dentist already and discovered that gas has gone down 9 cents a litre overnight (too bad it had gone up 14 on Friday, due to Ike 'possibilities', something is definitely not right in this scenario ). Sometimes it will drop a bit more in the afternoon so I'm waiting a little while longer.

Other than that, just getting caught up with a few last minute things and then I can get packed for my little North Carolina outing. Weather forecast for Asheville and area is looking just about perfect. Can't promise I'll be able to check-in here over the weekend. We may or may not have computers handy. I will be thinking of you though. Especially as I'm eating things I probably shouldn't.

So . . . if I don't see you again before hand, have a great weekend everybody and I will see you on Monday . . .

Ah yes, plural on the moments here too
What kind of macaw do you have? I used to "babysit" a green wing named Susie. Susie spoke fluent Spanish....at the top of her lungs....usually at 5 in the morning. She would worry at her cage cover until she got a little crack open then put her eye to the crack and babble away. Her English was pretty good too - when she was out and about she liked to sidle up to you, lean in close, whisper "look out", pinch you, yell "OWIE" and run away making laughing noises Since then, no one can tell me that birds just mimic - she knew exactly what she was saying. She was a big help housebreaking puppies too - we'd be in the other room and hear her yelling "bad dog" - sure enough there would be a sheepish looking puppy next to a puddle.

I know what you mean about not disturbing our precious little fur kids - I have a 75 lb Weimaraner that likes to sleep just in your Purdy's position and a 78 lb Rottweiler that prefers to nestle in behind DHs knees. And we have a queen sized bed. Quite cozy and not much in the way of tossing and turning.

As for the funny? Well, yes, there are several of us who's sense of humor is, um, slightly off center. Perhaps we should think of becoming the Giggly Golden Girls?

Yay, being mistaken for a young girl?!? Heck, I wouldn't worry about forgiving her, macular degeneration or no, I'd be hugging her to pieces

Love the tips Bobbi thanks for posting. I do something else with the shower water so's not to waste it. I put a bucket under the tap to catch the "warming up" water then put the bucket aside. By the time I get home from work, there is no danger of it being too hot so I take it outside and use it to water some of the plants I have - that probably have no business trying to survive in the middle of the desert and need a little extra (we are on a strict, mandated watering schedule as far as the sprinklers)

If I don't see you again before you run off on your jaunt Linda have tons of fun and a safe trip

Gosh Cat your poor MIL must think she's a storm magnet or something. I hope the damage to her Texas house is truly minor.

Have a glorious day GG's

Yoyo, I did give MIL a hug when she said that.

I don't feel or look like a young girl today. I'm having a rough day because of the rough night I had. My mother was up at 3:30 am and didn't settle down the rest of the night. She was crying wanting to get up every few minutes. I had just fallen asleep when she woke up again. I had gone to bed late and couldn't fall asleep so I had about 1 hour's sleep when she woke up. I slept again this morning about 2 more hours while she finally slept. I'm just ready to fall over but she's been like it all day as well. She has bouts of anxiety and nothing or no one can assure her she's safe from falling out of bed (which she can't do). I don't mind in the day if I've had a good night's sleep. I think the shopping expedition yesterday got her over-stimulated and overly tired as well. I've noticed this happening more often after a day trip.

I did get in my exercise this morning. I jogged inside for 65 minutes. Not sure how far exactly but I know it's over 5K. When I can't get outside I do it inside around my house, through the kitchen, living room and dining room. I know I can walk 5k in 65 minutes so a slow jog would be a bit more. (I've probably told you all that before.) I can't control how my mother is but I can control my exercise.

Hello all

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. We made it through ok. Lost power at 6:15 Sat am. Just got it back early this evening. We didn't get damage to our house - just branches down - so a mess to clean up in the yard. Lost all the refrigerated/frozen food we had. My daughter's house and family are ok. My son is ok - his house had some damage, but not too bad. We are thankful to be ok. What we had was just inconvenience compared to what some people had. I feel so badly for the people who lost family and homes.

I'm gonna get this sent quick just in case the power goes out again. My daughter had power yesterday, but it was off again this morning and hasn't come back on yet.

Hope you all are well. Will have to catch up on the reading later.

Take care
