I'm thinking about getting a season pass so I can skate more often.
I use to skate once in a while as a kid, and just recently (two days ago) got back on the ice. I wasn't on the ice very much but I was getting sweaty!
So I'm just curious if I can count ice skating for say, an hour, as an exercise?
You're moving your body the whole time...so I hope it is!!!
And I want to swim more often... Last question, how good for you is bowling? I know it probably isn't a good exercise, but it's fun! and you're moving a bit...
I'm very sure that ice skating is good for you! I remember the times when I ice skated and I also worked up a sweat. It takes balance and core strength just to stay upright xD I would totally go for the season pass for ice skating! Swimming is also a great way to do some alternative cardio.
In regards to bowling, I believe it is good for you, but I don't think it will burn too many calories since you have long breaks in between turns if you are playing with others; doesn't really get the heart elevated other than excitement. For me, the danger in bowling is snacking in between turns. I don't know what it is, but the snack bar in the bowling alley always has the best cheesy fries...
Regarding ice skating, yes it can be a great workout, but not if someone is stopping after each lap or taking breaks to snack or talk etc.
I ice skate 2 - 3 times per week for about 40 - 45 mins total with only about a 5 minute break to give my lower back a quick rest. I keep my heart rate up for 15 - 20 mins at a time.
Also I usually skate alone, I try to go in off-peak hours (less kids) and I skate. No lollygagging or hanging out etc. I sweat through 3 layers of clothing and I get a great workout. Good luck!
Any time you're up and moving is better than sitting. Most of the diet apps have calories burned calculators for lots of various exercises. Most of them over estimate the number of calories burned, but the point is that just moving will burn calories. Cleaning house. Gardening. Cutting the grass. Taking a walk. And certainly ice skating.
Ice skating is awesome!! I used to do it years ago when I lived near / worked at a rink, and I was SMALL. Put on about 3-4 stone in 6 months when I stopped, which is when my troubles began... I say if you have somewhere you can skate, go for it! It's great on the legs, brilliant cardio, and lovely exhilarating chilly fun
