Do you think your significant other wants you to lose weight?
Yes, I know he wants me to lose weight. He's told me before, but its not because he just wants to have a skinny girlfriend. My mother has diabetes and both he and I watch what she goes through. He is a health professional (pharmacist) and I will be one too when I'm done with school so both of us know the terrible things that go along with diabetes like: neuropathy, retinopathy, heart disease, and kidney and liver failure. Neither of us wants that for me and I am very high risk being obese at 23 and having a family history of diabetes. He wants me to be healthy so we can enjoy our lives together.
Is he "normal" or also overweight?
He is at his healthy weight. Not overweight, not underweight, but just right. He's actually pretty fit...
Do either of you ever talk about your weight or is it a "non-issue" and never brought up?
It used to be a non-issue because I would flip out everytime he brought it up. (I did this with anybody though) Finally, I realized that he only wants to help me and he does it because he cares so I lightened up about it. Its hard though because I have gained so much weight in the last year (40lbs) so I feel like I've failed him.
How has it affected your more, ahem, intimate life?
It used to, but he told me that it doesn't really matter that much to him. Plus he lets me wear a shirt while we do it so I don't feel so self conscious.
Do you feel he judges you for your weight, or do you think he understands?
A little bit of both. I think he judges me in the sense that I did let myself gain so much weight that he feels like I just gave up and I didn't care about what happened to me or our future together (with respect to my health). But at the same time he knows that its way harder for me to lose weight than it is for him. He is very supportive though and while I'm on track for my new healthier lifestyle he has agreed to buy all of my groceries! (I'm still a student so this is great!!!) Half of my problem is that I can't afford to go buy produce every week so that I can eat more fruits and veggies so he is my lifesaver!
Do you ever feel self-conscious?
Yes, I especially when we are out together because I feel like the whole world is thinking what is an attractive guy like that doing with a fat girl like her?? ( He is 5'11" and 175lbs and I'm 5'2" and 178lbs) But he makes me feel beautiful and he lets me know that there is more that attracts him to me than my size.
How long have you been together?
We've been together for about 2 years now, but we've been best friends for about 5 years.
