Did you try the jogging you mentioned in your mini goals? Not to put you off but I also tried to start a running program and did 1 day of running for 1 minute then walking for 3 minutes and did this for 30 minutes. 2 days later when I tried this again my knees were very, very sore. 2 days after that I could barely walk my usual 3 mile route. I had to take a week off to let my knees recover before I could walk without pain. I think we are close to the same weight so this is why I am writing you this post.

I just want to let you know to take it SLOW!! Your husband has got the right idea. I tried to do too much the first day and blew it for the next time. I too want very much to start running but I'm going to wait a bit until my weight is at least 200 that way the force on my knees will be lessened a bit.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from trying something new, in fact I congratulate you setting a new goal. I just want to give you the benefit of my experience. Take care and let us know how it is going.

Thanks for the advice - I do appreciate it!!

But nope, haven't tried the mini run thing yet ... too many neighbors have been outside as I'm going on my walk. If and when I do try it I think I'll be doing it under cover of darkness so my neighbors don't see me collapse on their front lawn!

Have a good evening!

as jen found out [unfortunately], we have to take care of our joints, and be more careful than our thinner sisters

I think it really depends on the person, and how you ease into walking/running. I've been using the treadmill to get my walking in, and started out just trying to walk 1/2 mile. Once I could do that successfully, I went to 3/4 of a mile. Then 1 mile. Then 1 1/2 miles.

To ease into running, once I got to 1 mile walking, I started to do 1 minute of running, followed by 10 minutes of walking until I made it to 1 mile (I started with 5 minutes walking, then 1 minutes running, then 10 minutes walking, then 1 minute running, etc.). Now I'm up to 2/10ths of a mile running of my treadmill time. So slowly but surely I will get there.

Beth ann that is the right way to do it very slowly. I tireid several years ago and really kiklled my shins. the next time i tried i get a great pair of running shoes and was 30 lbs lighter. it has l helped the furthest i have gone is 4 miles with about .5 walking interspursed in there. but then i pulled my hip flexor muscle and have been slowly weaning my way back in to it. so slow is thw word. (I too did it under the cover of darkness) i thought that every one could feel the earth shake when i did it!!!
