Here's a thread for you 1/16 starters!!! Post your meals and daily ups and downs here... Folks can help you balance yer meals, and offer words of encouragement and support!! Schatzi

I'm trying to do SB and I'm wondering what is a day of eating on SB like for you??

Today I had 2 boiled egg whites with 2 slices bacon for breakfast.

Snack was a few cashews.

Lunch was a grilled chicken breast with green salad, light chees, and ranch.

I'm starving right now though. Really wanting to eat the Whoppers candy sitting on my bar. Please help!!

Thanks
Amanda

hey Amanda,

I'm totally new too but from what I've read you shouldn't be starving so you need to eat more food, good choices but bigger servings.

Today I had:

I tried the Mock French Toast recipe from this site-I ate about half but didn't really care for it, cup v8, coffee

grilled chicken on spinach salad with cukes and tomatoes and black olives, oil and vingear-huge salad

sugar free creamsicle

cheese stick

saute snow peas with garlic, shallots and ginger, lean taco meat topped with spinach and lite sour cream and a nice glass of milk

later I'm sure I'll have some peanuts to snack on.

Instead of just a few cashews, make sure to eat 15 or so, that will fill you up and your jaw will get tired of crunching, better yet try almonds, it's effort to eat them, lol

:carrot: :carrot: :carrot:
why is this a dancing carrot if carrots are on the avoid list??? :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: lol

I agree sounds like you are a little light on the snacks or your portions are too small. Induction phase is the hardest, but it gets better.

The book talks alot about snacks. They are encouraged, not just allowed. You should plan a few snacks in between your meals. Cheese, nuts, slice of lunch meat, celery.

Also phase 1 doesn't stress portion size too much, you are suppose to eat until you are full, so if that salad didn't fill you up, add more chicken.

Phase 1, I assume? Unless you mean Canadian bacon or turkey bacon, bacon is a no-no in phase 1, if I remember correctly (we don't eat pork, so I didn't pay close attention).

It does sound like you are eating too little. Remember, this is not a starve-yourself-skinny diet, it's a healthy lifestyle change.

In phase 1, some examples of various meals I prepared are:

breakfast: poached eggs, V-8, tea; leftovers; scrambled eggs w/cheese & mushrooms, V-8, tea; Lemon Pie for Breakfast (from recipe forum)

midmorning snack: string cheese; celery w/Laughing Cow lite

lunch: salad (green, chef's, taco, etc); homemade soup; leftovers

midday snack: veggies w/homemade lf ranch dip or hummus; sf Jello w/Cool Whip Lite

dinner: baked salmon w/seasonings, hot veggies, salad; Taco Bake (from recipe forum) w/toppings, salad; broiled lean meat or baked chicken, hot veggies, salad; dinner salad; homemade soup or chili; sometimes we'd have a bowl of Mamacita's Amazing Vegetable Soup (from recipe forum) before dinner, too (unless we were having soup for dinner) - soup is a great way to get in extra veggies, and it's very helpful in weight loss efforts

evening snack: sf Jello w/Cool Whip Lite; nuts; sf Fudgesicle; Peanut Butter Cup (from recipe forum)

Do make sure you are eating enough, as well as a good variety of foods. Eating 4-5 cups of iceberg lettuce, while technically giving you your 4-5 cups of veggies, does not really give you enough nutrients or calories. If you don't get enough calories, your body will go into starvation mode and sabotage your weight-loss efforts.

Also keep in mind that this is not a low-carb diet - it's a good carbs, good fats diet. Avoid the saturated fats and trans fats, and the simple (especially the refined) carbs, and go with whole grains and fresh fruits (in phase 2), lots of veggies, and lean meats. Once you start eating healthfully, the weight loss should follow - especially if you get some exercise, too.

Good luck!

Thought I'd add my 2 cents :)

Bfast: scrambled eggs, 1 egg yolk, 1 tsp peanut butter

Snack: V8

Lunch: Tuna salad (tuna, lettuce, tomatos, black olives, onions).

Snack (in a little bit): will be 15 walnut halves

Dinner (will probably be): tuna fish or chicken salad (depending on the galley we go to.)

I always drink LOTS of fluids, mostly tea.

Perhaps all these suggestions would be more valuable in the Phase I Jan 16 Starters. I'll try to figure out how to merge it.

SO far so good for me as well. Well almost. I have been feeling awful lately I think due to stress anyway long story short I missed breakfast but being as I woke up at 11:00 am and picked up with a snack I think I may be ok, just this once.

S: LF Turkey Pepperoni Chips
L: Grilled Chicken LF Cheese, Broccoli, LF Chili, Diet Caf Free Coke
S: pistachios
D: Probably Grilled Chicken, LF cheese and SF tomato sauce (chicken parmesan almost eh)
De: Fudgcicle (gotta love them!)

WO: going to the gym with the DH. He will only want to stay for 1/2 hour so I better get my butt on the spinning bike. That thing kills me!

Glad to see you are OP Carey :) Good luck tonight, just say no.

Me too NSAN! You might want to post how yer doing on Phase 1 under the Phase 1 Start threads.. That's where folks can all get together as a team and help each other! So far sooo good... There are some really good desserts in the Recipe Threads..Like the PB cup, Here's some of the Grrrreeeat Schatzarina's :wizard:hints that help her curb cravings at night:

Feeling a bit Chocolately??? :chockiss:
Try the chocolate Breakfast shake..very filling ...

Need a Crunch?
Celery with ranch dippage or
one of my favs Egg Salad stuffed celery stalks.

Feeling Crispy?

Oven toasted Chic Peas seasoned with salt or goooo cajun ! or
l/f Salami or turkey pepperoni.. baked in the oven..

Feeling Nutty?

a tblsp of Smuckers Natural PB with a dollop of cool whip

Yesterday ate almost entirely OP:

S: LF Turkey Pepperoni Chips
L: Grille Chicken, LF Cheese, Broccoli, Caf Free Diet Coke
S: 30 pistachios
D: Chicken Ceasar Salad without Croutons

Went to a movie and started craving candy and popcorn soooo bad. Waited until after the movie and ate the following:

1 lf cheese
turkey roll up with ff turkey, lf cheese and dijon mustard
and finally

De: 2 tbs natural peanut butter and 2 tbs ff cool whip

Now I know I ate double the amount of nuts for the day. I will not be doing that again. At the time that I ate the pistachios I did not know I would be craving peanut butter cups so bad. Eating this was definitely better than grabbing that bag of hersheys peanut butter chocolate kisses, and ofcourse those donut holes that I had my eye on.

Wo: I did not make it to the gym today (broke my 4 day streak) but I did manage to get a mini walk in with the dog, so the day was not a total loss.

What about the rest of you Jan 16th starters, how are things going?

This is my first day on the Beach. I am excited because I have a friend who has lost a lot of weight and looks and feels great.
This morning I have had
1 low carb choco breakfast shake
1 hard boiled egg
Lunch
Ham rollups and broccoli with humus
Dinner
Tried to eat chicken but it was nasty so I just ate celery with peanut butter and string cheese

I have also successfully managed to avoid the big fat chocolate cake sitting in the breakroom!

Does anyone know if low fat cream cheese is allowed in the first phase?
Thanks!

hey phase 1 beginners!!

doing good so far-
had 2 baked eggs with turkey bacon and v8, and some really STRONG black coffee

then went to Sams Club to buy the 3 pk of Laughing Cows-brought a cheese stick with me to keep me away from all the sample vendors-that would be blueberry yogurt, choc chip cookies, carmel rice cakes, mozzarella stix, are the gods against me?? LOL

I'm proud to say that I happily munched my cheese stick and went home

Lunch is gonna be a spinach, cottage cheese, rotel creation that I plan to create LOL

I also started the 16th and I am not sure why, but I am hungry all the time! I have to find more snacks to eat, that's for sure!!

I usually have an egg in the morning
snack: celery with laughing cow cheese and hummus
lunch: tuna salad (huge salad!)
snack: Jello cup (usually 2)
Dinner: Last Night it was part of a pork roast and tonight will be salmon.

I am cooking an artichoke right now and will have some cashews as well. But I know it's working, but I am just always hungry now...

Steph

Ruthxxx
01-18-2006, 06:30 PM
Sarah, please remember pistachios and other nuts are limited to one serving a day. Chicken wings are not on the food list. You also must eat 4 1/2 cups of good vegetables - not just salad.

Steph, you are not eating enough.

Everyone: Please review the Revised Phase I Food List in the FAQ section and the other stickies in there. Vegetables are important and so is DAIRY! Where is the milk?

batmomm2000
01-18-2006, 07:12 PM
I agree with Ruthxxx, you should never be hungry Steph b/c otherwise you'll eventually just throw in the towel.

Eat a ton, just of good stuff. Make sure you eat 2 cups full of vegs at lunch and dinner but make them fun veggies-garlic broccoli, go to the recipe section and make the laughing cow aflredo sauce over cauliflower, spinach spicy tomatoe casserole, etc etc

keep going though, you're doing great!!

Welcome to all you Wednesday starters!

Last night I actually went out to dinner at Chili's and made good choices and I feel great about it (it is the small victories). But I did notice when I was picking up some groceries at Walmart I was craving everything sweet. I didn't give in, but I am hoping these cravings will diminish as I go on through Phase 1.

I hope everyone has a great day!

I know the Slimfast shake is handy but Dr. A. does not want us to use commercial shakes in Phase I - too processed. There are a couple of shake recipes in the Recipe Forum. You could also make a yummy eggnog or other sort of milkshake. I do a strawberry one with sf Jello for flavour.

Hey batmomm. What I ate wasn't on their normal menu - it was on one of those inserts they stick in. It was sirloin steak tips and a portobella mushroom. It was suppossed to come with veggies and rice but I asked for extra veggies instead of the rice.
The eggroles sound good!
I noticed the chicken lettuce wraps last night. Have you tried them and do they go along with SB?

i just want to say how grateful i am for this website. i usually peruse once or twice a week (even when i'm being bad!)

i did start phase 1 (again) on the 16th... it's been a bit of a challenge. i've been working midnights at my new job and am having some trouble sleeping, so no sleep tuesday-day meant wednesday night i wasn't totally up to par. i also got a flu shot that night (with no needle, very impressive. i'm so lucky to work at a facility that provides this for their staff, as well as paying someone to come out at 3am and administer!) then i came home and decided to go for a walk (in the rain) for an hour. didn't feel like it, but i figured that was part of my flabby persona and i must kick my own butt. crashed in bed as soon as i came back.

ok, so... i now see how ridiculous doing all these things together looks. the combination no sleep/first flu shot/phase one/starting exercise meant feeling reeeeeally dizzy after waking up at 1am last night (um... about sixteen hours sleep. eep.) i usually have a hard time for a day or two, but goodness... i felt terrible!

when i felt ready to get up this morning, i was having food fantasies. (never mind the fact that my family's signature "sick" food is toast and 7up-the only time we got non-generic soda!) i was also so hungry from not eating in 24 hours. won't mention the foods here, as they may be a trigger... but trust me, they were calorific.

so... after rambling for many paragraphs, my point is... i scrambled 2 eggs, sat at my computer and went straight to Fat Chicks on the Beach. I feel SO much better. there are even more recipes than the last time i was here! it sounds stupid but... i am hopeful that i can succeed again (lost over 30lb last time, gained 10lb back.) and i won't using being a vegetarian as an excuse.

not to say i won't do a happy dance when it's time for phase 2! :D

wildlife-he's relatively new with the company so I haven't tried too many things yet, pretty much got stuck on those darned eggrolls and winded up here on SBD, lol

I asked him about the lettuce wraps but they don't still make them in his store and stopped before he came so he's not sure. Although I copied this off their site "LETTUCE WRAPS
Delicious grilled Asian-spiced chicken with carrots, water chestnuts, crispy rice noodles and toasted almonds. Served with fresh Bibb lettuce and sesame-ginger and peanut sauces for dipping. "

so with the noodles and carrots, doesn't sound OP

I bet you could make something yummy at home though along the same lines. Also you can always get a side of black beans in place of rice or fries.

now I've got a craving for portobellos!!!

So yesterday was pretty rough in the energy arena. I think I am feeling better today.
It is my DH's b-day today and I want to get him a cake. I think I am going to stop by Walmart and pick up the tiniest cake I can find so he can eat it alone and I won't be tempted.

So, I started Phase 1 on Wednesday - today I got super tired/ dizzy after my morning snack and before lunch. What are some good foods you guys may have come across that really "pick you up", when you're feeling that low blood sugar? I had a Caesar salad with chicken breast (no croutons or Caesar dressing) for lunch. That helped a little, then I had a coke zero. I hate to use the caffeine, but it helped, too! Any suggestions on really fortifying - get you through a tough work day with lots of boring meetings - snacks?

batmomm - i got alotta room for that milk. :p does it make more sense that they were at different times of the day? lol

jo - pistachios are your friend... sometimes cracking something open while under stress helps. :D i love peanut butter, boiled eggs, popsicles. hello fellow bay area gal!

ok, so... i'm watching that National Body Challenge on Disc0very channel right now and all i'm thinking is how good their "before" food looks. i don't think that's quite the effect it's supposed to have, lol.

Okay...I love to read posts and get motivation from everyone, but I have to post my triumphant day yesterday, except today I am worn down..lol :dizzy:

I am a Realtor and every friday we go on tour to see all the houses in our town that are listed for sale as well as it being our office meeting where pot luck breakfast happens every single week. So yesterday I turned down the following items: blueberry muffins, chocolate chip muffins, some kind of muffin with chocolate drizzle all over it, an apple bake of sorts, croissants (sp?), and quiche (made with regular cheese and heavy cream). Then on tour, I turned down croissant sandwhiches (I actually took one and just ate the meat and lettuce), fresh baked brownies (these nearly broke me!), 4 kinds of cookies, Double fudge chocolate cake, and my most favorite desert in the entire world, cherry cheesecake. This was not all at one place either, this was over the span of seeing 8 houses and the last one had the cakes AND it was lunchtime at that point! Last night I had to turn down cranberry oatmeal cookies, but at that point my resolve broke a bit and I had one single bite and it was heavenly! My hubby took the rest for me:)

So today has been a bit tougher because yesterday took every ounce of resolve I had in me...way more than I THOUGHT I had, that's for sure!

Anyway, I just wanted to post my tough day..LOL

I know you 'shouldn't' weigh yourself but once a week, if at all, but for me I have to and this week it has been a HUGE help. I hope at some point I won't need the scale anymore, that I will be comfortable with just fitting into smaller clothes. Today was yuck. Woke up late, forgot to pack food, was very hungry/cranky at work and my performance was not good. Came home, immediately ate a salad, boca burger w/salsa (instead of mayo... which is a babystep.)

Glass of milk, 15 cashews, fudgsicle, 5 sf candies.

Very tired, kinda depressed, haven't lost anything in three days. But I didn't eat anything of the tacos/brownies/fruit/juices/cakes at work. And that's progress.

Well, I had a great weigh in, as I lost 7 pounds my first week!! Unfortunately the rest of the day didn't quite go as planned. I ate okay, but definitely not enough food as I only ate once today. It was just one of those days you hope come to an end without too much damage being done...the ones where you wish you would have just stayed in bed! But my biggest thing was that I was able to keep myself from turning to food to ease the stress of the day...instead, I went to Barnes and Noble and spent a bunch of money on books. I am going to have to start making much more money to keep up this habit...:dizzy:

Anyway, tomorrow is a fresh start.

No really, SF GIANT... There are purists who say straight water...there are those that say most forms of liquid "count" towards "water" intake. For South beach Dr A mentions water intake (As 2 or 3 Quarts) and that water is the most preferred liquid, but if what you are drinking is not sugar laden or beer, other liquors, or fruit juice, it should be okay...like everything else in moderation. The only other caveat here is that it is sweetened with aspartame and falls into that "not over 75 cals a day" of SF products ...That being said, I doubt yer gonna drink THat much of it...
Some things that help getting some pure water in for me are
1) Drink it thru a straw
2) drink it really cold!
3) Stand in front of the sink and dont move till I chug a good 24 oz Sports bottle worth!

Batmomm (and anyone else that wants in) - Alright, the water challenge is ON. I'm gonna get my 64oz a day - already met goal today. NOW I realize while people ran to the restroom all the time!

Familyof5 - I hate bookstores. Because I love them so much :D

I've decided I've lost weight. If I haven't it's "water retention." (the things i do for my sanity!)

So - I have a question for you guys - are you going to go into Phase II now or are you going to sticke with Phase I for a little longer?
I am going to try to eat as much on Phase I as I can for the next 2 weeks, but I am not going to be as strict -meaning I might add in some whole grains or fruit if I get bored.

Some of us do Phase 1.5... It's what we call it when you are introducing only a few phase 2 foods back in ...and doing it slowly.. so, that's the part of the beach I'm moving to.

well we -cut loose for my bday a bit, not wild but some "extras" so we've been kinda 1.5 also. I have had a small serving of brown rice just b/c it was leftovers

Moving to the 1.5 beach this morning!

Had a weigh in this morning - I've lost 1 pound and no inches on P1. Poop. I'm hoping that I've gained muscle from my yoga and pilates and that's why I'm not noticing anything. I also started tracking my meals, etc on fitday.com. I'm only averaging about 1000-1100 calories per day. Do you think that could be why? I need to eat MORE to lose? I'm not hungry, though!
I'm really sticking to the diet as much as possible. No Sugars have touched these lips! Lots of veggies have! Lean meats, Fat free cheeses. Ugh.

Since most of us are on phase 1.5, I was curious as to what foods everyone is introducing back into their diet? I have been eating a piece of fruit each day and have been doing okay with it. I am just curious to see what has been introduced back and if anyone tried something that ended up bringing on cravings and thus they found they shouldn't eat that food.

Well this has been my first week on phase 2 and so far I've really just introduced SB cereal bars into my diet... since they are so easy! Also made some lentil soup since I hadn't eaten many beans aside from hummus... going to lunch today and was thinking I might allow myself a whole wheat bun... a little nervous though...

I added in some fruit to my cottage cheese and I at one whole wheat roll yesterday at lunch. The weight is moving any farther down - but my cravings haven't come back either. I am anxious to see what happens at the end of the week.

Hey Phase 1 people, i started on Jan 17 and should be off Phase 1 now but am very scared to change the pace. I have been doing well had a few bumpy days at the beginning but now i find it easy. Please help with advise in making the conversion from Phase 1 to Phase 2. Also that Chocolate Low Carb breakfast shake sounds really good, where can I get the recipe/ or buy it?

I am doing what on these boards is called phase 1.5. Right now I am adding in only 1 new food a day. Today I added some fruit to my cottage cheese. Yesterday I had one piece of whole wheat toast. The reason for adding slowly is to determine what foods cause cravings. Like if the fruit I added this morning suddenly made me want to go eat a chocolate cake, then I probably wouldn't eat that fruit again. Things are going so far so good right now. However, I am kind of nervous about the scale. I mean, I don't expect it to go up - I just hope it will continue the downward motion while adding new foods.
