Happy Weekend All! So happy to hear Meg's surgery went well. I thought about her alot yesterday.

I made out fabulously at the auction yesterday, and thankful my big strong son came along to load everything into the truck. I got dumbells, barbell, and of course the weights, hand weights, a bench, AND some kind of banded weight machine with a bench and attachments for leg pushes and lifts, and who knows what else. There was so much there, I 'm still not sure what all I got - for $51.00. A little cleaning and hubby to put it all together, and I'll be in business. So today I have to tackle rearranging the basement, but it will be a labor of love - for me. Even though my son doesn't live at home, he says he's going to be over more often - gee, I wonder why? (It sure isn't Mom's cooking anymore!) LOL Hubby is losing weight right along with me, and he's stoked too.

I had a fun moment with my son. We had to park about 1/2 mile from the auction and the sidewalk, I thought, was narrow. So I was walking ahead of him and thought he was behind me. Well, he was, waaay behind me. He yelled, "Mom, slow down!" When I turned around, I had to laugh because usually he and his dad had to pull me along whenever we walked together for a long haul to a concert, air show, etc.

thanks for the thread link MJ. I'm glad to read some sensible information about loose skin instead the usual 'oh just make a wish' kinda stuff. lol

JEC, I'm so very sorry...Hospice used to come daily to our house when Dad got to that point. They truly are angels..I hope they can make this time easier for all of you, Dad included to bear.

Meg is doing good that's great to hear! I miss her already !

Dip-- Wow you walked away with the whole shebang at that auction... Lucky you!

JC -- Hope your dad is comfortable, prayers are with you and your family...

Yesterday was not a good day for me food wise, D had a BD and I got into the chips and ice cream cake... but had nothing else, no supper or M6 for that reason... I know it doesn't compensate for bad eating, but it's better than nothing... Today will be a better day....

Did my UBWO today, and definitely need to kick it up a notch!! Now this is going to sound silly.....but I am afraid of those heavier dumbell. When I do a chest press, for instance, I can barely get those 30 lb weights in position - I sit down with them on the bench, then lay back, and that is the part I don't feel in control over. However, I need to move up in weight, and that scares me a bit!! I don't have a spotter, and once I get them into position I am fine. Does this sound goofy or what!! Anyways, does anyone have suggestions on how to heft those heavy weights into position? Maybe I am doing it wrong, I don't know.

Robin- Maybe this will help. Normally if I don't have a spotter I carry the db's over to the bench with me and sit down on the end of the bench. I put the db's on my quads, then I pick up the weights and bring them to my shoulders before lieing back on the bench. You always want to make sure you have the 5 pt. stance in place before you start lifting. After lieing down, begin to lift from that point, and when you are finshed with your reps, ALWAYS allow your arms to be lowered to the outside of the bench and release the db's onto the floor. (Lower arms to floor, db's near floor, open palms to release db's.) Don't ever sit back up with the dumbells in your hands. It's dangerous because you could easily become faint, and without a spotter if you lose control of the db's you can hurt yourself. I understand that going up in weight is sometimes scary, just move into it slowly. If the weight is still a concern, do your chest presses on the Smith Machine so that you can lock out the weight if it begins to feel it is too much for you to handle.

Iliv.......what is a 5 pt stance? And what are Smith machiens....I keep hearing about these!! I don't know if my gym has them or not.

Thanks for the info......you echo what I have heard at the other board. I will try it!!

By proper stance I mean to make sure you have your feet, (firmly on the floor)shoulders, head, butt, firmly on the bench before doing any lifting. I see some people raise their feet off the floor and pull them into body. EEK! I am sometimes overly cautious when training, but in the long run I would rather be cautious than get hurt.
Smith machine....you probably see people using it to do squats and other exercises. It has a bar on it that can be moved up and down the length of the machine. It also has "hooks" on the bar that can easily latch if you can't get the weight completly up to a starting position. There are also safety bars that can be moved up and down that catch the bar if for some reason you "hit the wall" and can't move it on your own. The next time you are in the gym, ask one of the trainers to show you where the machine is and have them point out the saftey latches and how it works. Hope this helps a little!
