OK, My goal is to be running the full 1-2 miles without having to stop and walk. I am more than half way there right now. HOWEVER...My shins and knees hurt when I am done!! My knees aren't that bad but I can feel it but my shins are killing me, it's hard to walk when I get home for running.
Does anyone else have this problem. I have inserts in my shoes to help absorb the shock and that didn't help a thing!! What should I do to stop this. This is why I haven't run before because it's always been like this but I feel so good now that I don't want to stop running!! Any suggestions will help me out!!
Betty...I have been using you as excercise motivation! WTG on the hills!
Jess...I'm with you....I am struggling a bit this week with exercise. We have the big move to the house happening on Saturday, so every spare moment seems to be filled with packing, cleaning, and waiting for phone/appliance/cable/etc guys to show up. I am hoping that I am managing to get enough exercise through walking, packing and cleaning! Oddly enough, I do miss exercising. Hmmmm....first time in my life that that has ever happened to me! Not so sure if it is the actual exercising that I miss, or the feeling of satisfaction I have when I finish a work-out. Either way...it works!
Big problem really is the eating...not easy to make healthy eating choices when you are in transit. Have been eating a lot of Subway and pizza (we have a place that uses low-fat cheese near us)!
Got to the gym today.. I got in 40 minutes on the treadmill (it wasnt as busy today so I could get on the machine early) and of course the usual weights and situps.
Its very good to get back on plan.
Golfergirl - I personally do not have that problem.. but I have friends that do.. or related problems. Have you seen a doctor? I really would.. they can refer you to a specialist in feet. I am guessing you might have flat feet or need special arch support.. But I am not a doctor.. just by two cents. You also might want to try different shoes.Good luck
Tonic- Thanks for the reply on my question. I have always had shin splints. I know the Drs. say that you shouldn't run on cement or tar but I don't have a choice I am in the city and that's all that is around me. I have inserts in my shoes for my arches already ( I do have really high arches so I always need that support). Just wondered if anyone had any tips that have helped them.
hi everyone, been MIA last week. Was sick (can't beleive I was sick in June! ugh!) so I didn't really exercise or worry too much about eating.
Golfergirl I can sympathasize somewhat with your "shin splints" I don't have that problem, but I injured my foot. Actually it was hurting for about 5 months until I finally went to a doc who told me to stay off it as much as possible. no running, walking (for exercise) aerobics, not even the stationary bike or elliptical. of course I am stubborn and for the last few weeks i've been doing the bike and of course my foot isn't that much better. Last week w/o the exercise i've noticed some improvement. Also I found out I have to avoid shoes with Heels and almost all my shoes have heels (what shoes nowadays don't have heels??) anyway I have a few pairs w/o heels but they aren't that great for work so I think I'll go buy a pair or two comfy shoes for work and hopefully this will help too. the doc said to give it another week and we can talk about a steriod shot but I don't really want to do that yet, because I know i haven't been following his orders 100%. so i pretty much won't do a lot of cardio for a while and just do weights and toning and hope it heals on its own.
so my point is, go the doc and get his advice and do what he says!
When did you start the diet thing?? I am just wondering because I am at about your starting weight and would like to get to your goal weight!! What's your story???
This board is great for my motivation so I love to hear the success stories of people in my age group around my size...
Today I went to the gym and did a total body weight workout.
I volunteer at an animal shelter and tonight I'm going to a walk a few dogs. not very strenuous, but still it helps.
I've been slacking off a bit on the exercise because of the move...All free time is going to unpacking - however, I am getting a LOT of lifting in. As well, I am walking to and from work (35 minutes each way).
Fortunately, the kitchen is now set up so the eating is back on track! No more take away food!
Jenn - glad to hear that you are feeling better.
This weekend is the long weekend in Canada (Canada Day), so I will commit myself to unpacking and will back to the gym on my return to the office on July 2nd. Committing to this now...so I have to keep up with my promise!
I've found that if I stretch, that usually alleviates any problems I might be having. Once those muscles get stretched and built up enough, I think it will help you out
I've been away for the last week. We went to Florida for vacation. I had good intentions of running on the beach, but it just didn't happen. Anyway...I started swimming again this morning. I went about a mile! And I'll probably jog or bike this evening.
Kris--Congrats on getting the kitchen set up and on your move. I am going to be moving myself in about a month. I know it takes time to set up the household but it's do-able. Good job also on the walking to an from work! That's AWESOME!!
Jenn--Becareful with your foot. Pushing it too hard before the dotor says it is okay is more detrimental than not doing anything at all. Take it easy, I know how frustrating it is, but after it's considered well then you can go at it full speed. I had a similar issue with my knee when I completely tore a Ligament in it. I was dying to get out and do more than I was allowed to, but now it's well and I can go full speed ahead...so I guess what I am saying is if you push too hard now it might hurt the recovery and you will have to deal with it longer. I've found lots of backless shoes don't have heels on them. I have no idea where I've found all my shoes but the majority of them don't have heels.
