Question At Home vs. Meetings

I have done WW 3-4 times before. Made my 10% once. Dropped out each time after a few weeks but I know that it works and I am thinking about doing it again. This time I am thinking about doing it at home or on line. I am wondering if the WW@ Home is just as helpful as going to the meetings. Sometimes it is hard for me to get to the meetings because of other things going on.

gsgb - It's hard to give a blanket answer to your question, because it's really an individual thing. Some people just really need the external, in-person support that going to meetings provides. My pattern with attending meetings was a lot like your's: I'd go for awhile, meet with some success, drop out and repeat the cycle all over again. When I decided to try WW again, several years ago, I opted for the at-home program because the meetings available to me were going to be a chore to get to and I knew that eventually I would quit going to them and that would lead to quitting the program altogether. So I opted for the at-home program. I really don't miss the meetings, don't need one more place to be at and one more thing to have to do, and find I get plenty of support here. So although I still struggle with being on program and could have been to goal long ago, at least I've never given up. And without the crutch of "the meetings were just too hard to get to" I've really had to give thought to the other reasons I struggle and deal with those. Good luck, whichever route you choose. I'm going to do mine at home. I have the original program from years ago but thought I would go on line and get the current book from Amazon. My problem is all of these weight loss clubs want money all the time and money is tight. I'd only have to pay for the book once, and there is tons of support online. I don't think I'll be able to stick with it without support. So I guess it depends on where you are emotionally and financially. Judy

Red face

Hi,
I am doing ww at home for two reason,s. 1. I live way to far from a meeting place, 2. My 14 yr. old daughter is doing it with me. We have been on it since 1-31-05. We both have lsot weight. I find this site very helpful when it comes to finding answers to my questions. I would like for anyone to let me know some good recipes that teenagers would enjoy, so that she will not feel like she has to skip all of the fun foods. I am hopeing that we both can lose about 50lbs each.

I live really close to a meeting, I just can't get up there in front of a group of people and get on the scales. Maybe when I'm closer to goal, i'll start attending meetings. Until then, home is fine with me!

For me, the local meetings either didn't fit in my schedule, or the personalities just didn't mesh. I've lost 17 pounds since I started back in October and I've found tons of support online.

I think it comes down to your personality. If you need someone in your face, so to speak, then going to meetings would probably work better for you. If you just need some kind of accountability, you can find that online.

Default At home verses meeting...

My sister has been going to Weight Watcher's meetings since late September 2004 and she is doing quite well. She knows that I want and need to lose weight but cannot afford to go to the meetings. I live on a very limited income, therefore today in the mail she sent me a point value book and the point ruler scale. This is all new to me. She is doing the flex plan. I have other family members to cook for (one overweight and one not.) We eat alot of Mexican food because that is the ethnicity of my dh and family. So, I am thinking that the flex plan is what I should do. I weigh 206 lbs. Any ideas or help for someone not familiar with the plan but willing to learn as I know that it works. Thanks in advance for all replies.

I have done meetings and at home. I like doing it at home because my meetings are far away. I also love the online support..

I started at home Jan. 24th, 2005, main reason is because Im not a step on the scale in front of a group type person and second is the money, Im happy with the results so far by doing it at home and Ive found some great web sites that have helped.

I considered doing the at-home program, but I've had so much trouble sticking to other plans (e.g., South Beach), that I really felt I needed the accountability of going to a meeting. Plus, I'm cheap, so I have the added motivation of trying to get my money's worth.

For those who mentioned weighing in front of a group--you actually only weigh in front of the leader or receptionist and they don't announce anything unless you want them to.
