Default Difference between core and points and other programs?

What is the difference between the core and points program?

I'm trying to figure WW out. THe only experience I have with the program is from over 20 years ago when my mom did it and it had the pieces of paper with all the little boxes on them that you had fill in.

I'm currently doing a low-fat calorie reduced diet of my own. Just basically eating fresher, healthier foods and such. I've gotten a WW cookbook because the meals were lower-fat. I'm trying to understand how the diet is different from my diet, or if it's basically the same.

I understand the points system is a way of assigning points to meals and that you have a set amount of points you can eat a day. But, I understand there is also a calorie counting form of the diet. So, how is WW different then from other plans that reduce calories and fat? (besides the support)

Thanks, just trying to see if it's something my hubby and I should look into, or if we're pretty much doing it already without the outside support part.

The list of foods that are not allowed, are they based on carb content/ glycemic index or another reason?

Ok, thanks. I think it sounds alot like what I'm already doing. I figured it probably was since the cookbook fits into what I'm doing, but I wanted to make sure. I know WW has been statistically very successful for people, and I desperately want to get this weight off. I live in a tiny town and we don't have anything like that up here, so joining locally just isn't an option. I didn't want to fork over the money online unless I felt it was something radically different than what I was doing. Thanks for the info everyone!
