Personally, I've always alternated my cardio/weight training days. I'm not sure how many days you are going to the gym, but if you go five days a week, you could do cardio on two days and weights on the other three.
Another thought is to do some cardio during your weight lifting routine. I work out with a personal trainer and he almost always has me doing some cardio while I am resting between sets. Here are some of the things he has me do:
- jumping from side to side
- jumping from a lunge or squat position landing back in the same position(this is a killer, ten jumps and I'm wiped out)
- running in place, raising my knees to my waist
- jumping jacks
- short sprints (about 20 feet or so)
- mountain climbers
- moving from side to side over a step (starting and ending in a squat position)
I thank God he doesn't make me do this, but jumping rope would be another good cardio activity to do between sets.
The cardio intervals are always very short, usually just 15 or 30 seconds (except for the sprints, I probably spend a couple of minutes doing those). You want to do all of these activities as fast as you can (and you don't have to do them all, just the ones you like).
Or you could try running outside, before or after you go to the gym (if it's not too hot where you are). Nothing gets you into cardiovascular shape like running (except maybe swimming). Jumping rope is something else you could do at home--ten minutes before and after you work out.
The main problem with cardio is that it is boring. If the two of you could get side-by-side machines and entertain each other while working out, maybe your DH wouldn't be so bored with it. I see other couples/workout buddies do this at my gym. Sometimes I wish there were a "chatting" section for people who are bored and want to chat with their neighbor while doing their cardio.
