Me, me! I've been doing water aerobics for quite some time. I've taken water aerobics at three different places, and have been happy with the workout at all three. A lot of water aerobics is what you put into it, which is probably the way it is with any kind of aerobics. I don't enjoy sweating, and water aerobics lets you get your heart pumping, but the water keeps you from sweating. Plus water aerobics is great for people with joint problems--a true no-impact workout. I hope you like it as much as I do.
My DH did all of his cardio training on a rowing machine when he was getting ready for a long canoe trip.
Shoot! I just remembered that my bowflex has a rowing machine set-up! I'll have to alternate that with the dreadmill (nods to Ilene )

Hadnt even thought of thrift stores; what a great idea! Im actually thinking about getting an X-Box or Sony playstation and getting one of those dancing games. A while back in another thread people were giving those some really high reviews. Maybe as a christmas present to myself. In the meantime, Ill be hitting the thrift stores
I went, I tried it, and I loved it!! I doubt that I got a full "aerobic" workout this morning because I was so busy trying to work on form and technique. But I can tell it's going to be a great muscle/joint workout, and I can sure feel it in my butt and legs as I'm sitting here. Oh, and I can feel it across my back, too. Sheila, maybe you can tell me: do you feel that aerobic rush after a water class that you get on almost any piece of equipment (treadmill, rowing machine, etc)? I'm keen to google water aerobics now, and see what I get. I'll bet there's fabulous advice, tips and pointers on ye olde web.
I'd recommend that anyone who's interested give it a shot, especially if you love being in the water as much as I do.
I'm so glad you like it. Yes, I do feel that rush after a hard water workout. Today we did a lot of HIIT, which I enjoy and it really gets my heartrate up. Starting and stopping in the water requires a lot of energy, too. Did you do abdominal work in the water? We spend 5-10 min. on abdominal work, and I feel that a lot more than I do crunches on land. I imagine it's because I'm working the abs hard to keep my legs in the "tabletop" position, while keeping my butt down.
I think it's more accurate to say that the rest of the class did a lot of abdominal work. Me? I was concentrating on keeping my butt down and my back straight. It was hard. Is What is HIIT? High Intensity something or other? Interestingly, here it is Sunday night and I'm really looking forward to getting back in that pool! I've been all over the web looking for hints, tips and tricks about water aerobics. Haven't found too much yet, although I quickly realized that there is tons of aerobics "stuff" for sale. Ain't it always the way

One year while on vacation, I was running around in the pool being chased by my family-- literally jogging in 3 and 1/2 feet of water, and I had the best leg workout of my life. Im not sure I would want to take a class, personally, I think Id be hoping to use the pool to swim free style and if there was room, to jog some laps.
Glad the water exercise is working out so well for everyone.. makes me excited to try it myself!
I just have to post again about water aerobics (there's no greater zealot than a convert). I went to my second class this morning, and this time I could really feel it all over. Yes, we did High Intensity Interval Training, and yes, I could feel it in my legs. Tonight, my shoulders are sore, but otherwise I feel great. For me, there's just nothing as great as being in the water. I was talking with a woman who's taking the class while her knee heals; she usually takes a spinning class in the morning. She says she's not getting the cardio rush from this class that she gets from spinning, but she agrees that it sure is great for the joints. We also had a lot of fun. At one point, the instructor had us in the deep water tossing a small ball back and forth between partners. It was just plain silly, and it was just plain fun. I felt like a kid again. Can't recommend it enough.
