BFL/BB #83 - week of 30 Dec 2002

Howdy y'all! Comin atcha from Storm Central here :(

I'm going to Miami at the end of January for business and I gotta say I can really use some SUN and WARMTH right now...and so glad that the holidays are finally over (we don't really do anything for New Year's Eve so no problem there).

A big WELCOME to all the newbies and lurkers out there...

I've got a massive project to work on here (as usual!) but wanted to address Jennelle who was the last poster on the previous thread...I'm glad to see that you are gung ho on the program - but your portions are WAY too small. Cottage cheese (along with eggwhites) are one of the few foods that palm/fist doesn't work very well with - since they are pretty 'fluffy'. You need a LOT more protein and clean carbs than that - you're going to be doing some pretty intense workouts on BFL, ya know! ;)

I personally recommend rather than counting calories counting grams of protein and carbs (if palm/fist doesn't work for you). I use 1 gram each of protein/carbs per pound of TOTAL bodyweight. According to your signature, you weigh 238 pounds - that would be 238 grams per day - or about 39-40 grams of protein and carbs per meal. 1/2 a cup of cottage cheese only has 13 grams of protein - you need at least a cup or more! (this might seem like a lot - but as you lose bodyfat and the scale weight goes down, you can adjust your portions). As far as the bread...well...in the book, Bill Phillips only RELUCTANTLY authorizes whole-grain bread (check your bread - a lot of the 'whole wheat' ones are actually white bread with some wheat flour and brown food coloring mixed in). Bread is pretty high-glycemic and I've found it doesn't stick to my ribs as well as other carbs - such as sweet potatoes, oatmeal, white potatoes, fruit, etc. Please don't think I'm trying to be critical - I want you to succeed. If you're hungry all the time, you won't be able to work out and make progress. You need to FEED those muscles! At Lean & Strong - Tall Jen (TJ) generally has a daily menu thread (I think she's on vacation this week with her fiancee so no thread - but you can post your menu and I'm sure you'll get some more advice). It's a great resource for folks who are new at this and trying to figure out what the heck to do for those six meals.

I like to puree my cottage cheese with some Splenda and vanilla extract with my hand blender (or you can use a regular blender). Add a portion of cold, cooked sweet potato and some cinnamon or pumpkin pie filling - VERY tasty indeed!

Hope that helps a bit! Back to work I go :)

I'm Back!!!!!

I had a great holiday and just wanted to pop in to say hi and that I am back to clean eating and working out. Yay!!!

I hope that everyone is doing well and that you all had a great Christmas. Happy New Year by the way since it's the 31st over here at the moment.

Thankfully my few weeks off only gave me a 4 lb increase which probably is mostly water. I am hoping that it will disappear over the next few weeks. Besides that Life is grand!!!! (Can you tell that I did cardio a few hours ago??) :)

So everyone CHECK IN and catch me up on how you are and what plans we have for the New Year?? I think this year is going to be THE year for me!

YES !!! I'm back TOO!!!

Hi girls!!

I've missed you all so much.... I hope we're going to have a 12 week Challenge starting in January... I am starting the one for myself January 2nd unofficially, and Monday the 6th officially and as JEC said this is going to be THE year for me too.... I absolutely must get in shape....

I've just registered on-line for a night course in interior decorating, design and display, and I'm very excited about that....

I've been busy in the last month shopping, shopping, shopping, AND eating, eating, eating.... I took out the scale this morning just for fun... and I was shocked to see that I FORTUNATELY had not gained any weight since the last time I weighed in, which was ages ago, maybe in August? Or maybe I have gained and I don't know it because I had LOST some weight?? :o One way or the other I didn't feel so bad because of the ##'s .....

Just a small recap of what I've been doing.... (don't read this if you're not interested :dizzy: ) I've been off work since the end of November from the high school where I had been working for the last 3.5 years, :( , I loved it there, and I miss the girls very much.... BTW I'm a temp secretary and go from school to school and replace secretary when needed... I went to a really cute country school in December, 75 kids and 5-6 teachers, OMG it was so much fun... It was a bit out of town, I had to take the highway for 22 minutes to get there, but considering many of you live in big cities that would probably be nothing for most of you..... I've been going to the gym pretty regularly before the last 2 weeks of the holiday season started. I'm just not going because they have been opening at 8AM!!! Which in my book is way too late and the holiday crowds drive me crazy... I'm really spoiled to get the machines when I want to and to keep it as long as I please.... So Monday the 6th it's back at it full force.....

Food wise, well, that has not been good at all...... I've been eating what I pretty well please for the last couple of months, which is why I was suprised that I hadn't gained any weight....

Ledom -- I read a while back how well you were doing.... CONGRATS GIRL!!!!!.... I'm so happy for you....

Well girls, I sure hope you don't mind if I join you again, and we will ALL make it our OUR YEAR!!!

HAPPY NEW AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!!!

Lana.........

Not Quite New Years

Glad to see some familiar faces coming back. Hi JC, Lanaii. And hello newbies, too!
I had a horrendous, sleepless night last night which I'm blaming the 5 chocolate truffle for. I can deal with the headaches and bloating of eating off plan, but when it starts affecting SLEEP, then I'm back to squeaky clean. Other than that, eating has been going pretty well, totally clean about 5 days/week, then an "occaision" problem. Luckily, I haven't hosted anything this year, so no big piles of leftover goodies to stare at. Also, all the running (did 10 miles on Saturday) must be helping. Those long runs are really grueling. I cannot imagine doing a full marathon! The race is not quite 2 weeks away, hope I survive  .

I don't know about whether I'm going to take some time off after the race.... I feel like I've been shortchanging the weights a bit while doing so much running, but I've a feeling I'm going to be really tired for a few days. Will have to play it by ear, I guess.

Gotta go-
mel

ledom 12-30-2002 10:57 PM

hey guys!

Happy New Year's Eve to you. I am home from my trip. I am SO ready to get back w/ the program in the morning. I don't even want to think about what I have been eating, I am just ready to move on and get back in the groove. I'll weigh in about a week, there will be no weighing-in at the beginning of challenge 2.

Hey Lanaii, good to see you back. As a matter of fact I thought of you this week when D and I watched Anne of Green Gables for the umpteenth time. Someday we are going to visit Prince Edward Island! Thanks for your kind words too.

Welcome Janelle (?), I am trusting a faulty memory to get your name right here.:^: Anyway, it is great to have another teacher on board. I know just what you mean about taking advantage of sleeping in. I am looking forward to that myself now that the holidays and travel are behind me.

I was down on the coast so I was able to snag a swimsuit on sale while traveling. I bought one two sizes too small (cheap), that I thought I'd take before pics in for this next challenge. I should be fitting into that suit, if not by beginning, by the end of the summer. By the way, it is a $80 Ralph Lauren tankini that I got for $10. I LOVE a bargain.

Well, great to be back. I'll be checking in again tomorrow to report on day 1 of Challenge 2.

Hey to Mel, Karen, JC and the rest of the gang. Look forward to hearing from all of you!

Jennelle 12-30-2002 11:02 PM

Hey Mrs. Jim...Thank you so much for the advice! I did spend about ten minutes in the bread aisle yesterday making sure I got the "right" kind of bread, but I totally agree: a slice of bread is not nearly as filling as a fist-sized baked potato! I'm also glad to hear that my cottage cheese portions are too small! :) That 1/2 cup didn't last too long in my belly!

I am always open to advice, so keep it comin'! :D

MrsJim 12-31-2002 03:01 PM

Happy Old Year everyone!!!

Jennelle - no problem. The first BFL challenge IMO is always a learning experience, ya know? Learning the portions, the workouts, etc. Thank goodness for the Internet - otherwise where would we all go to learn stuff?? :)

Well, it's almost noon here - the office is closing early today for New Year's Eve...I am feeling great today - I used my new Trainers Edge software to 'create' a six week menu - I'm on Day 2 right now. It feels great to eat 100% CLEAN - no sugar except for the occasional fruit and lots of H20 - my jeans are getting looser already! :)

Yesterday I took Meg (our new kitty) to the vet - who felt she was older than 2 years. She has gingivitis and the sniffles, so he put her on antibiotics...which I am supposed to give her with an eye-dropper. Yeah right...she would NOT take it. I just spoke to my boss (the kitty expert) and she suggested I wrap her in a towel, open her mouth and squirt it in very quickly. Last night I ended up squirting the medicine on her belly and she licked it off! As far as the Sparky-Meg relationship - well, it's getting better day by day. He still isn't comfortable sleeping on the bed with her yet, tho' last night he jumped onto the bed twice but jumped right back off!

Well, time to blow outta here...I have a whole turkey breast to cook up this afternoon - then babysitting for sister...hope everyone has a happy new year! It's great to see all the old familiar faces as well as the newbies!!!

Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

Here's wishing you a year of health, happiness, prosperity and clean eating. For me, the clean eating started 2 hours ago. It was getting pretty bad with way too many free meals.

Have a good day,
mel

Happy New Year!!!!

I hope you all are getting your year off to a good start today.

I am back! C2D2W1. It was tough to get going again this a.m. as I did my first strength workout in almost 2 weeks. But I am ever so happy to have my structure back. Guess I am going to be sore tomorrow.

I am revved to make some real changes this year.

HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Hi girls,

We had a fun time at a friends place last night for new year's eve...just a small group but it was fun. I didn't eat or drink too much so I am please with myself today... So far today I have eaten very clean.... Later we are going to my brother's for a turkey dinner.... I made brussel sprouts in an old cheddar cheese sauce, and turnip and carrots, plain with no butter so I can eat pleanty of that and not feel guilty....This is my first turkey dinner of the season so I will really appreciate it, I'm not sure if I will have dressing and all the trimmings yet, because my favorite is the turkey meat itself anyways.... For Christmas when I had my parents over for dinner I made prime-rib for a change so no one would O/D on turkey for the holidays, and that seemed to have gone over very well, it was delicious...

Karen ~ How old is Sparky to add this new cat with him?.... I've often thought of a second cat but I'm worried that our old one who is 5 years old, will start peeing on the furniture and stuff to mark her territory, so I've never gotten one... altho I think about it all the time...We babysit my mother's dog for a few weeks at a time and for the first couple of days it's pretty funny the cat kind of stalks around the house very slowly to avoid the crazy dog who dives for her every time she moves.... It's pretty cute and funny.... The cat put the dog in it's place, the first time the cat batted the dog on the snout the dog backed off pretty quickly and been careful ever since. One thing that has made them instant friends is locking them (by pure accident ) in the bathroom together for about 20 minutes, no one realised it for that long.... We all laughed about it and the pets were none the worse for wear....

one_sweetchick -- ledom -- jennelle -- and everyone else starting and keeping up clean eating during the holidays my hats off to you all for sticking with it.... I admire you tremendously.....

So far today I have eaten very clean, Pamcakes for a late breakfast and chicken and a veggie stir-fry for lunch....and 6 glasses of water, I'm really proud of that because I've been having such a difficult time with that lately....

Well I have to get going to get ready for the festivities....

Later all.....

OMG I forgot to mention "my baby" has become a "woman" today.... she's only 12.....and my son shaved for the first time on Christmas morning.... This Holiday season has been filled with Milestones.... Life and time is just passing us by it seems.....

Well now I will definitely say later all....

Niffer 01-01-2003 06:24 PM

Still around!

Hello All!

Glad to hear everyone is doing well. I had a nice holiday and NYE was nuthin big. Stayed at home w/ the Mr and watched The Others and Black Knight. Was supposed to help with a yearly fundraiser for an old boss/friend (he's a politician) but stayed at home instead. Feeling a little down due to some news I got regarding an MRI I had on my brain. Seems there is an "area of restriction" in the right front. So, I am kinda worried about it. This may seem strange, but I don't want to workout. I'm affraid. The doctor said it's not major (well, it's not his brain!) and that we have to do other tests, but still, I not am taking this very well. I was going to workout today, but I have spent the entire day reading posts here and at L&S trying to get caught up (read: not moving). Eating has been clean.

I am really upset at my 'former' doctor's office staff for failing to notify me of the results. I called and they couldn't find the chart. It was sitting on his assistant's desk for 3 MONTHS!!! The MRI was done on 10/2 and I got the results 12/30!! On 12/30 it was still on her desk, buried under all kinds of crap. She was going to call me with the results and schedule all the other tests the doc wanted to run -but forgot- cuz she couldn't see the file. :bravo:

Well, sorry for the rant. I needed to tell someone and you guys are just the best. Haven't been around here for long, but I know you all already. Thanks for listening.

I am going to go write down my goals for the year and plan out my meals and workouts (seems silly since I just said I wasn't going to workout! :dizzy: ) But I will talk to the (new) doc tomorrow and see what the tests reveal.

Take care All!

MrsJim 01-01-2003 06:51 PM

Hey you guys!!! It's 2003!!!

It's going to take me all month to remember to write 03 instead of 02

Last night I babysat until just before midnight - Jim stuck around until 11:00 but pooped out and went home - it turns out that my sister and BIL's reservations were at 7:40 pm but the restaurant (the Bella Vista in Woodside - GREAT place) couldn't even seat them until 9:20 pm. Jeez! This is exactly why I don't go out on New Years'.

Had a great workout this morning - the gym opened at 8:00 and I got there 3 minutes after they opened. It was so nice and tranquil - there were maybe 15 people in the whole place. Of course that will all change tomorrow (since it's 3:30 pm now, it's probably crowded at this point). No rain today but FREEZING - a good day to just watch TV or go to the mall, right?

Lana - Sparky is just over 6 years old. We thought Meg was about 2 but my vet thinks she's a little older than that - and that she has carried a litter before (she was pregnant when she was brought into the pound and they terminiated that little and spayed her). He was actually amazed that PHS didn't euthanize her - he told me most pregant cats are euthanized, but she has such a sweet personality that they decided to save her :) She was so cute at the vet's - he was taking her temperature (rectally of course) and she was on her back purring and playing with him. Sparky and Meg are getting along better day by day - fortunately Sparky has never been a 'spraying' male cat. He's more of a face-rubbing tagger. We've gotten rid of the second litter box - they use the same one now - and miracle of miracles, Sparky no longer needs to be fed wet food with a baby spoon! And he hasn't thrown up since we got her either!!! I think it's peer pressure myself...

Speaking of the mall - I'm gonna do some window shopping...

Mel 01-01-2003 07:12 PM

Day 1 almost over

of 2003, that is. Today is my BFL anniversary, too. So I guess I was a "resolutioner" last year.
Had a really ho-hum leg workout oday. My knee is bothering me from yesterday's run, and I had to work out at home, so all in all, it wasn't real special. But I did it, despite feeling like a slug. Amazing what 1 bad meal and 1 drink will do. My gym was open 7am til noon today. Why not noon til 7? I just couldn't get moving and kept putting off going until it was too late.
I am definitely going back to my no-alcohol rules. I can really feel and see the difference it makes, and that's just 1-2 glasses of wine a week.

Niffer- I sure hope further tests reveal it's a big nothing to worry about! I can understand how you feel- a couple of months ago I had a breast cancer scare and was paralyzed by fear at first. I workout out like a fiend- it was the only time I could stop thinking about it. But my eating really suffered. I took me about a week to work out that being self destructive was not going to help me, whichever way the tests turned out. I'd be furious with the doctor, too. Good luck and keep us posted. I'll be thinking of you.

Hope you all had a good day 1 of 2003, now back to real life

Carrie9142 01-01-2003 09:17 PM

Hi to all! And a Happy New Year!

I am a newbie!

I just started BFL on Monday (so, its not technically a New Year's Resolution!) Sadly, since yesterday was NYEve I had to use my free day on the very second day. But, I am trying to get back on track today.

I am sure I will have tons of questions for all those who have done this program. Right now my biggest question is: Am I supposed to be this sore??? I am in PAIN from my workouts Monday and Tuesday. Is this right? It feels like I am not getting as much out of my workouts b/c I am doing them in pain!

I will be back!

JEC 01-01-2003 11:48 PM

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!! Glad to see that everyone and is doing well and a BIF belated congratulations to Ledom!!!

Carrie: Welcome! Yes you are meant to be that sore - that means that you are working out at the right intensity - soreness is a good thing! It will dissapate over time or you will get used to the feeling. Personally I still get sore after 15 months but I am used to it and I also take glutamine powder. If you get the powder try taking a teaspoon before your workout and another one at night. It will help with the soreness and keep the colds away as well. If you decide to get capsules note that you will need to take a few to get enough glutamine in your system. A teaspoon is about 5 grams and the capsules are normally about 500 mgs. Anyway you get the picture. Try stretching as well once you are warm - it eases the muscles a bit BUT do NOT stretch cold muscles - that 's how you get injured.

Well I am doing well and am on day 4 off my new challenge. I have incorporated Dave Draper's Lean legs workout into my routine this time and boy is it a KILLER!! My hammies are screaming right now.

What are everyone's goals for the current challenges? Who is on a challenge (of any length or type?) What kinda program other than strict BFL are people doing? Fill me in guys!!

JC

Jennelle 01-02-2003 12:47 AM

Lana...hang on to your hat...you've got a PUBESCENT girl! My daughter is 13 going on 22...love her to death but good GOD that girl has more mood swings than Linda Blair in The Exorcist!

To everyone: This is going to sound REALLY silly, but one of the most helpful things on this board so far has been to read the "slip ups." I went out of town for New Year's (Peach Bowl, Tennessee got slaughtered 30-3  ) and boy, eating "clean" on the road is REALLY tough! I am very proud of myself, though because (with the exception of breakfast this morning) I made very good choices and drank all my water and more (tough to do when you're driving six+ hours...I'm why gas stations have restrooms!). Other times, I'd just say, "Well, **** with it, I've screwed up now, so why bother." Knowing that "the experts" have been in my same boat, though, made me look at the positives. Thanks :)

3fcuser1058250 01-02-2003 08:52 AM

Hello Carrie,

Welcome to our group, you will love it here.....

As for soreness, yes you will be sore, because I think, (this is not an expert opinion) if you are new at weight training your muscles are in shock.... so take it EXTREMELY easy on yourself.... I know from experience that I too will be megga sore on Monday the 6th when I go back to the gym.... and I really don't mind that at all, I love it actually, it just feels like a good soreness....

Today only 2 hours into my day I feel GRRREAT!!!

Have a good day all.... and "I'LL BE BACK!!"

MrsJim 01-02-2003 12:26 PM

Howdy!

I'm at work right now - but it's deader than dead here - my boss is thinking about working from home this afternoon. If she does, I'll probably blow early outta here myself - I overslept (!) and didn't get to the gym (right now Thursdays are cardio only days for me) this morning - so I brought my gym gear with me and plan to get my cardio in here at the company gym. I'm sure that my 24 Hour Fitness is going to be a madhouse this afternoon!

Last night Mr. Sparky was being difficult - Miss Meg was asleep on the bed and HE wanted to be up there too! He kept jumping on the pillows, waking us up, then he would jump down and meeooowwww, then rattle the doorknob just to get our attention :dizzy: so at 1:45 am Jim finally gave up and went to sleep on the couch. Of course Sparky snuggled right down next to him and went to sleep! I can't wait until Sparky and Meg can stand to sleep together...but I didn't get much sleep last night as a result and was out until about 6 am!

Carrie - I totally recommend glutamine along with a nice hot soak in the tub or Jacuzzi :) I actually enjoy it when I get delayed muscle soreness - that means they're healing up and getting stronger!

JC - I'm using my Trainer's Edge program right now - got a six-week fat loss menu scheduled. I actually have to re-do the menu choices because I cooked up that whole turkey breast, so I want my menu choices to use as much of that as possible. TE is such a cool program - I really enjoy being able to program in my favorite foods.

This past weekend I went to the library and checked out two books - "Weight Training for Dummies" and "The Quest for Peace, Love, and a 24-Inch Waist". To all newbies I'd like to recommend the "Weight Training for Dummies" book as a supplement to BFL. The authors explain everything in a very easy-to-follow format (typical of the "dummies" series of books). I'm still reading "The Quest for Peace..." and it's a bit on the touchy-feelie side of course but still some good stuff!

Well yesterday Jim actually came here to work and used the gym! I was going to go with him but for me, with him out of the house for a couple of hours it's a good time to get some cleaning done  Besides, he wanted to ride his motorcycle there, and I ain't gettin' on that thing - no way!

He browsed through the "Dummies" book for some exercises and today he's nice and sore. He also told me he weighed himself and was shocked that he had gained so much since the last time he got on the scale...maybe that's the catalyst he needs to get movin'. Of course he stopped at McDonald's on the way back... :s:

ledom 01-02-2003 02:02 PM

Good morning, Niffer, my best wishes are with you as you go through the ordeal of discovering what is going on. I wish the best for you. Welcome Carrie. Mel, isn't your race next week? Do you feel like you are ready for it? Karen, good luck getting those kitties to cooperate with your intentions. You are a more skilled pet psychiatrist than I if you can get them to cuddle up. My old cat still hasn't accepted the new cat which we have had nigh on 3 years now. Actually the old cat might now, but she was so nasty at first that the new cat is no longer interested! But hey, I still haven't given up hope. I am looking for a third cat now. Losing our male made this household of females lonely. I have located a litter to be born in Feb. and ready by Easter. We are devoted siamese lovers and so if nothing turns up before then I guess we'll have a spring kitty. I hope someone will like someone when we add a new kitten to the mix. Of course D and I are hopelessly devoted to any kitty that crosses our path.

Sore today but going strong. I actually got in 2 cardio sessions. I always do my 20 min. first thing, when D woke up she wanted to hike so I set out again for about 45 more minutes. This is good as I put on a little "water weight' over free week. It seems to be coming off pretty quickly and I am hoping that by the end of week one I will be back down to the end week of challenge one as far as scale results.

Patt0 01-02-2003 04:31 PM

Happy New Year to all

Well I made it through Christmas season not too badly. Eating was pretty awful. I tried to eat BFL meals, but the snacking got way outta control. Anyhow, back on eating plan today. Started the day with a pamcake!!!! We had enrolled the children in skiing lessons, so we skied for 4 days in a row between Christmas and NewYears. I think all this activity helped me not to slip back too far!!! Hurray !!!!!! Ds was actually so tired he missed his last lesson because he was throwing up. I guess 4 days of skiiing in a row and a box seat hockey game (go Canucks!) birthday party in the middle of it was just too much for him, poor kid. Anyhow, we are all now officially skiers!!!! What fun!

As for my workout plan, I will be eating clean starting today and I will begin my workout challange on Monday Jan 6. I'm gonna do lifting every second day (plan from krista smash's page) and ........
NO Cardio!!!!! Will do this for 12 weeks, with lift changes every 4 weeks. And we will see how this works. Gotta remember to do pics and measurements on Sunday evening.

Well gotta go. We got the kids a Game Cube for Christmas and it is my turn!!!!!

Patt, who is glad to see everyone back and doing well!

Stinkerbellah 01-02-2003 04:55 PM

Hi!

I am coming out of lurkdom. I will be starting my BFL challenge on January 6th.
This seems like a very supportive group and I look forward to participating.

3fcuser1058250 01-02-2003 07:01 PM

Hello girls,

Welcome Stinkerbellah...

PattO ~ I see you are in Canada, where in Canada? I'm in Eastern Ontario and we do alot of skiing too, actually we are going to Ottawa tomorrow to buy some new ski boots for MOI!! Yippee, first time in a few years I get new equipment...kids usually come first :frown:...Son needs yet another pair of boots, we bought him a pair at the END of last year, and he needs a new pair already....grrrrrrr..... I specifically asked the salesperson last year if they would fit him this year, and to make sure he had a larger size at least a half size....... "oh yes this should fit him next year too ma'am!"---- NOT!!!! Well I guess it's hard to predict how much a teenager will grow in a year....But D will get son's pair she's in a larger size than I am right now, in a 9, and she's 12, unbelievable!!

Karen ~ I was at the library too yesterday and got an interesting book.... "The World's Best-kept Diet Secrets" by Diane Irons, I even wrote out a contract that they recommend you sign with yourself...She also wrote "The World's Best-kept Beauty Secrets", I think I saw her on Oprah once for that book....Speaking of Oprah, did anyone watch her today.... She had her annual "nutrition" show with Bob Greene... I really enjoyed it... I taped it too so that I could watch it again later when I need a little motivation down the road.... Oprah also signed a contract with Bob Green when she started... Karen what is Trainer's Edge? Do you have to purchase it?

Right now I am extremely motivated. Hubby got me Dr.Phil's book for Christmas "Life Strategies".... I am really enjoying it and writting down all the assigments he has in the book. I feel really good about it and everything these days....

Ledom ~ What name do you use on L&S, I've been looking for your posts but you must use a different name.... Or maybe I'm just blind ....

Jennelle ~ I laughed when I read your post about your daughter and the Exorcist  .... because that is exactly what I compared her to when I was explaining to the principal last year about homework problems we were having... I actually think she has been PMSing for the last year or so leading up to this, because she has been in the best mood since yesterday.... She says to me today I don't have PMS I'm in a great mood.... I then had to explain to her what it was, and she actually said I wasn't like that was I??? I guess she just doesn't see hereself...

Today has been sooooooooo clean and the water has been excellent too....It's probably too low in protein and carbs.... Acdording to FitDay, I have only 116 carbs, and 129 protein, and 1357 calories whereas I should have at least 150-160g of pro and carbs.....What do you guys think? I ate very well, and I don't feel hungry or tired or anything...

Tomorrow I am going to the gym whether my partner is going or not.... I just need it in a big bad way and I'm not waiting till Monday for my official Challenge 2 start date......

Well girls all good things must come to an end....

Have a good evening, and see ya'll later ..... (ya'll just doesn't sound or look right coming from a French Canadian EH!! .... )

I am ledom over at l&s too. I don't post very much there, but I do post my workout every morning on shellC's thread. That is like a big part of my routine morning ritual. Hey, I saw Oprah today too. I was telling D who was watching it with me what she had right and what she had wrong. I don't think she eats enough, and she is following that old myth about not eating 2 hrs. before bed. Well, you gotta be a bodybuilder to eat the food I guess. She does have some things right though. The thing I enjoyed most was that she was just tooo cute, she seemed really relaxed and comfortable and warm to her subject today.

Welcome stinkerbellah, what a CUTE name. I laughed when I saw it.

Patt0 01-02-2003 07:30 PM

hey Lana

I am on the West Coast. We just started skiing this year at least me and the kids. DH has skied before. We bought all our equipment at a used sporting goods store. Great places those! My boots were $7. Canadian dollars that is, about 50 cents US. :)

We ski on our local hills. There are three of them. We went with the cheapest one for the kids lessons. I now know why it is the cheapest. Visability is a problem on this hill. One can see about three feet infront of your face, if you are lucky. Oh well, it wasn't like that everyday. We will have to make ourselves happy with the local hills as we can't figure out how to get the wheelbarrow of cash up the hill to Whistler/Blackcombe. Wowzers is that place expensive or what ????? I quess getting the phraze "World Class" attached to your ski hill gives you a licence to print money.

Later eh? is eh french? I though it was Canadian?

Patt0 01-02-2003 07:33 PM

stinkerbellah!

Sorry, I meant to welcome you to our group. It looks like there will be a few of us starting a challange on the 6th!!!!!!

Go fer it!!!!!

Hi to everyone!

I had a pretty good day. Does anyone else have trouble remembering to eat? I do. All of the sudden I will look at the clock and realize I should have eaten!

Here is my question: Does everyone REALLY eat 6 times a day? I can manage 5, but it seems weird to eat at 8:30 on a full stomach. Would it be bad if I just stopped? I really am not hungry AND it seems like so many calories a day. I know I am supposed to follow the plan "exactly", but I don't know if this is a part that would work for me. Does anyone else skip some meals?

Also, does anyone drink the supplements? I am just wondering if they are worth the money and whatnot.

Had a good cardio day though. Woohoo!

moxiegirl 01-02-2003 08:53 PM

Hi to everyone!

It's so good to come here and see so many new faces and familiar old ones. Looks like everyone is getting started on something new! Welcome to all the new people! You'll love BFL and you'll love this board too :)

Patt-you and I have something in common--no cardio! I decided to start six months of Body RX a few days early (I had planned to start on Monday, decided to do it today). So far, so good. As many of you know, I've been trying really hard to gain some lean mass and I just get too caught up in the calorie counting and meal plan making madness of it all. So, I'm just counting fiber, protein and starchy carbs. Feels very strange, but very good in a way too. I started up my good-ole' supplement routine this morning as well: creatine, glutamine, CLA and extra vitamin C than what is in my multi. I am missing my cardio already, but I honestly do feel that it's held me back from gaining what I've wanted to. So that's what's up with me these days.

Karen--Trainer's Edge sounds very cool. I need to get myself a demo and see what I think of it! Glad to hear that Kitty-Central is calming down somewhat, the story of Jim having to sleep on the couch was too funny! It seems like you guys have crazy kids who won't sleep or something like that!

Carrie--I know it's hard to want to eat that last meal, but it really is necessary. Your body needs those calories before you go to bed to rebuild the muscle you've broken down in your workouts. If you're really stuffed, you may want to post a day's menu here and see if you're on track.

RE:Oprah--When will the myth of not eating three hours before bedtime ever die??? The whole thing that Bob Greene was saying about how when you resist the urge to snack late at night it means that your body is dipping into its fat stores was crazy! If that's all it took to keep from being fat then it would be easy right??? It really does bug me that stuff like that is presented as truth to so many people this time of year. ARGH. I thought she didn't eat enough either, still doing the three meals a day thing too. Oh well, that's Oprah for you.

Have a good night!
Maggie

Carrie - I bought the AdvantEdge bars and the AdvantEdge Carb-Control ready to drink shakes in rich dark chocolate flavor. The shakes are REALLY good and are perfect for when it's time to eat, but you're not all that hungry.

The bars are pretty filling, so I know they're going to come in really handy once school starts again. Right now, I'm figuring out which ones are the best. So far, I've tried blueberry and cookies-n-cream. The blueberry ones are kind of gross, but the cookies-n-cream ones are yummy!

Question for anyone who can answer it: I have been drinking copious amounts of water - upwards of 144 oz. per day. I haven't had to force it; I just find that if I carry a glass of water with me everywhere, I will drink it. Now, it used to be that I drank diet Coke by the gallon. Today, I drank a diet Coke and about 20 minutes later I had the oddest taste in my mouth, kind of like those old fashioned saccharine drops. Is this normal? Is all the water I'm drinking just getting rid of things like Nutrasweet in my body?

Mel 01-03-2003 08:38 AM

Rainy, sleety Friday

YUCK! I tried to drive ds to school today and couldn't make a dent in the ice on my windshield. DD was supposed to drive to Guelph Ontario for National team tryouts (lacrosse)- a 10 hour drive in good weather, but there are severe storm warnings out for northern, Pa, all of NY and Southern Ontario. She called the coach and was told to skip it- she still has a slot on the team and not worth getting killed to get to this set of tryouts. Thank heavens! as of 9 pm last night, I was packing and planning on driving up with her, then flying back from Ohio, since her classes resume Monday morning. It was all getting very complicated and then sounding dangerous to boot!

Carrie and Janelle: Welcome! The bars are generally not considered good sources of protein, or carbs. Try to use them sparingly- like real emergencies when you can't get to real food. I think you'll find as you eat clean fo longer periods of time, that lots of things that used to taste OK, taste terrible. I find now that I can't tolerate anything with nutrasweet, sugar alcohols (malitol, sorbital) or generally artificial ingredients. Except good old vaniilla or mocha protein powder. Don't know what I'd do without that stuff! And yes, really try to get in your 6 meals, for at least 1 full challenge. Use protein powder and a carb (frozen fruit, and pp in a blender) makes an excellent, quick, portable meal. Or even pp and oatmeal (raw flakes) with ice and water all frothed up is good.

Moxiegirl- I use Trainer's Edge also. I bought it a few months ago, when they only offered multiple user versions. They have since come out with a single user version that Karen has. It is welll worth the money, but if you are doing BodyRx, I don't think it will work for you. It allows you to customize calories( and zig-zagging), protein/carb/fat ratio's, and pick the foods that you want to eat. But you won't get enough fiber to get through cycle 3, for sure. I was trying to eat at cycle 2 levels, and just ended up adding a 1/2 of fiber one every day. I figured the extra calories (60?) weren't going to hurt. You'll find a lot of the same recipes that are being raved about from the Camp PB people on L&S are in Trainer's Edge. It generates a meal plan, which you can then jiggle and customize if you don't like a few of its choices, recipes, and a shopping list. BTW, started studying the ISSA materials. I think I have a short term memory disorder- long time since I was in school! Hope you don't get buried in snow today.

Patt0- I'd love to go out to Whistler, too! My ex-SIL worked as an instructor there and raved about it. My dh did 2 coop terms there in college studying snow melt abd has always sworn we'd take a vacation there. Well, we've ben married almost 25 years and I still haven't seen the place!

Hi ledom- Glad you're back! I couldn't wait to get back to the gym either.

Lanii- You sound real motivated and ready! Can you send some of that my way? I'm motivated but just tired.

Karen- Many years ago, we started closing our bedroom door at night and keeping the animals out. After a few nights of piteous meowing the got the picture and we got some sleep. Then we had kids, and it all started over  I've yet to have a cat that just lays down at my feet and STAYS THERE! As far as I'm concerned, 3am is not the time for a stroll around the bed, play time, or snuggle and purr time with felines or humans. JMHO.

Hi JC! Nice to see you back. Did you have a good trip?

Today is back and biceps for me, then my last long run on the weekend before the race. I may be ready to join the BodyRx'ers again after this. Though evertime I skip cardio, I start getting fatter. :(

Bye,
mel

Hey Guys,

LBWO this morning after 2 weeks. It was great, I concentrated on my form and control and used fairly light weights. It felt great and I felt like I did my muscles a favor by breaking them back in that way. I was listening to some great music too. My new Norah Jones, George Harrison's Brainwashed, the Beatles Revolver and Bob Dylan Blonde on Blonde. It's a great mix for strength training, or anything for that matter.

I gave up Diet Coke as one of my goals in my first challenge. I have never looked back. It is the best thing I have done for myself on this diet I think, I also love water with my meals now.

Eat all the food just like the book says. After a while it is just so right. You will second guess, but just follow the book. Look up the banana bread recipe on the L&S recipe board. Use those instead of bars. I still use bars as back-up but I am picky about what I buy. Powerbar has a new sugar free, high protein bar out now. But really, I find the mini banana loaves have solved that commuting, I want to hold something that isn't messy and eat it quick meal...I use met-rx Butter Vanilla Protein Powder in mine along w/ organic applesauce.

Good morning!

Last 'dead' day at work for awhile :dizzy: so I guess I'd better enjoy it while I can, eh?

I was amazed this morning at the gym - thought it was gonna be packed and it's still pretty quiet. I guess everyone is either taking the week off and coming in later in the morning, or decided to 'start' on Monday the 6th!

Mel - Guess what! Kitties both slept on the bed last night!!! :D Well, they weren't SNUGGLED together or anything, but at least they were both on the bed. Sparky was next to me, and Megan was sleeping next to "Daddy" (Jim of course). Kinda made it tough for me to get out of bed in the morning, since Sparky was on the edge...Megan has turned into a little oinker as far as food goes. This morning I measured out 1/2 a cup of kitty food and she just ate and ate...until it was all gone. When it was just Sparky, that 1/2 cup of kibble would last him all day, she polished it off in about 10 minutes! Sparky just kind of looked at her like, wow, what a pig! So what we are going to do is get some of that diet cat food and put it out during the day to slow her down a bit. She didn't eat much last week, but I think now that she's getting over her cold - she hasn't sneezed in days now - that her appetite is coming back...

Jennelle - I have to agree with Mel here - the bars and ready-to-drink shakes aren't the best things to eat - they're loaded with sugar and what little protein is in them is pretty low-grade stuff - they count the gelatin in the bars towards the protein on the nutrition label. Also, check the labels carefully and do some math - if you look at the AdvantEdge Carb Control Ready-To-Drink label you'll find that there are 110 calories but only 15 grams of protein - and 15 grams of protein is NOT enough - worth even less because some of that protein is from gelatin which is pretty worthless for muscle building. Since 1 gram of protein = 4 calories, 60 calories of the shake is protein, leaving 50 calories unaccounted for (the label states "Note: Fructooligosaccharide is included in the total calorie count but is not included as carbohydrate" but it's still empty calories...they are playing games with the labels. Same with the bars - check the labels and do the math.

Check this thread in the Buyer Beware section for more info:

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/show...threadid=21131

I remember when I first started BFL - I figured that anything that EAS put out was the best stuff...but keep in mind that Bill Phillips has not been the owner of EAS for some time now, and in the meantime EAS has put out a plethora of products, many of which are a waste of money IMO. The only products I buy at this point are Myoplex Lite (love the Cappuchino Ice flavor), glutamine powder (whatever's the cheapest - usually it's Labrada brand) flaxseed oil from Trader Joe's, and a women's multivitamin.

Oh Oprah...I really have mixed feelings about her...first off, I was at work so didn't watch the show but did read about it. I think it's great that Oprah is expounding strength training, but if you read Bob Greene's books, (Make the Connection and Get with The Program) you'll find that he doesn't think strength training is all that important - at least not as important as doing a ton of cardio. And that old myth of not eating 2-3 hours before going to sleep...sheesh...gimme a break! I get the impression also that Oprah is not changing up her routines or increasing the amount of weight she's lifting - but I could be wrong since (again) I don't watch the show - I just get the info from her website.

about the Diet Coke thing - I think like anything, once you stop drinking it regularly you lose your 'taste' for it. In fact this happened to me - I used to drink a lot of 'regular' Coke and then switched to Diet Coke when it first came out in 1982. After awhile, I tried drinking a regular Coke and found it was WAY too sweet for me :( still is actually. Pepsi - and especially Diet Pepsi - tastes like medicine to me! I generally limit myself to *one* Diet Coke per day, after I've drank all my water.

Travel food - I usually cook up a couple of chicken breasts and tote a piece of fruit - or mashed sweet potato - and that works just fine for me. I've heard of folks making protein pancakes (a.k.a. Pamcakes) and eating them on the road as well. Some of the people at L&S make a few pancakes at once and refrigerate or freeze them - haven't tried that yet :)

Moxie & Lanii - Regarding Trainers' Edge - what Mel said. If you want more info, PM me and I'll give you the link :)

Gotta get back to work gals! More later ;)

Patt0 01-03-2003 02:07 PM

Hey all

Just checking in, I managed to eat clean all day yesterday! Hurray!!! There was even a couple candy canes left over, that I didn't eat. They were the yuck blue ones, but still!!!!

moxigirl - yes I remember you were going without cardio. Lets hope it works for you. If I recall you actually like cardio, I hope it is not too tough for you to give up. They way I see it, 12 weeks is a good test to see if a particular strategy is working, and then try something else. If I don't get good results with no cardio, then I will have to put it back in (ewwwww).

mel - yes, I suppose we should get to whistler too. We practically live at the base of the mountain.... well.... relative to you. Hmmmm almost 25 years eh ???? Maybe a 25th anniversary give to yourselves???? I think there is summer skiing on the glacier too. And don't forget Mt Washington on Vancouver island - it is pretty good too. And then there is Mt Baker in Washington State ......

About the food thing, I have really realized just how much food actually effects ones affect. I ate what ever I pleased over Christams (mostly BFL meals, but any snacks whatsoever) and boy did my mood change, I was really crabby and miserable most of the time. Directly food related, I'm sure. I am really grateful to be eating clean again!

Patt

HELP!!!!
I can not seem to get really motivated again. I am not over- eating, but definitely not eatting clean and not working out to my potential.
I am disappointed in myself, however, not giving up. I will finish this Challenge to the best of my ability. Take one week off, and then start anew. I will eat clean, WO til i hit a 9 or 10 everytime, and follow BFL to the T. I know it can really work if followed correctly. I am down emotionally so not giving it my all. Hopefully I will pull out of this slump soon and pull myself together. I start a new job on Monday and am looking forward to that, so hopefully life will be a little smoother. Next year, I will plan better around Xmas. Hope you are all mentally well, and physically too. There has been a lot of the flu going around, nasty stuff. Have avoided it thus far, (knock on wood).
Take care all
Virginia

Hi girls,

Just testing my new avatar.... talk later

Lana.

3fcuser1058250 01-03-2003 07:44 PM

Hi girls,

I am so UPSET, I just spent an hour (well maybe I'm exagerating a bit) posting all kinds of things.... and when I submit the reply the administrator said that I had too many smilies to go back and change it... so I went back and it was GONE !!!!!!!!!!:censored: !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I was just looking at the time of my post when I put my avatar in and this one, and it has been more like 2 HOURS..... guess I wasn't exagerating....)

It's a good thing that I'm in a good mood.....or I would have just gone to watch TV with my D....

Firstly,today I started my day,like you Ledom,with a great lower body workout....

Secondly, food was very clean today again....

Thirdly, I got a new pair of ski boots.... on sale.... regularly $400 for $149, great deal.... Son got a new pair too....

Last but not least I did something totally out of the ordinary for me I took some before pics...... front :yikes: side :yikes: back :yikes: :yikes:.... :sp: and oh what a backside it is.....:ink:

Well I am keeping this post short, I'm really disappointed about the last post.... :( ... from now on I'm going to copy it to a document before I send it just in case....:?:

Bye all.... Take care....

Mel 01-03-2003 10:10 PM

Smileys

Lana- LOVE your new avatar! I've heard that about the smileys before on another board here: if you use too many, and I don't know how many that is, your post disappears! One of the reasons, other than laziness, that I hardly use any :D

Virginia- Try goiing back and reading your goals, re-read the "crossing the abyss" chapter, go look at some transformation pictures on L&S. Maybe that will help. When all else fails to keep me honest, I go take my clothes off and look in the mirror. :yikes:

Just came back from dh's company party. Was running late and didn't pack any food, so I was really worried what if anything I'd eat, but they had sushi tuna! So dinner was a heaping plate of delicious tuna, and does wasabi count as a carb? Polished off a big bottle of Pellegrino water, much to the amusement of the CEO whokept trying to pour me a big glass of wine. Geez, was I good!

Patt- You're right about food and mood. When I eat poorly I get *****ier than usual. Sometimes downright ugly mean. Usually it's wheat and sugar that do it.

See y'all tomorrow!
mel

Carrie9142 01-04-2003 05:58 PM

Hi everyone! I am back and have more questions :dizzy:

First, I would like everyone's experiences with the first few weeks of their first challenge. I am just wondering what to expect. Mostly I am confused b/c I have GAINED half a pound :yikes:

Secondly, I am not trying to really body build. Mostly lose fat and gain a little muscle. I already have decent muscle tone. I am worried that I am goint to bulk up. Is BFL the right program for me?

I know I am filled with questions. Thanks in advance.

3fcuser1058250 01-04-2003 06:00 PM

Hi girls,

Hope everyone is having a great weekend... Mine is very quiet. But after all the parties and everything it sure feels good. Took it easy today went to the library got "our bible" :D and now it's mine all mine...:s: for at least 3 weeks.

I've been reading so much lately every thing I can about motivation, how to STAY motivated. I've been on the internet so often my kids keep saying "It's my turn, get off!!" But no the puter is mine all mine...:s:

I loved your pics over at L&S mel, and 48... Wow....

I agree with food and mood... I noticed in the last 2 years or so since I don't overindulge that often on carbs. When I eat too many of them I want to sleep about 15 minutes after consumption... I got a book at the library today about just that "Food and Mood"....

Food today has been very good again... 3 days in a row....no free day till next weekend...:( ... that's ok... I will really be looking forward to it....

Now I must tear myself away from the puter and go hi-lite daughter's hair....and son's too... I don't remember dying my hair at that age??!!...

Later all.....

3fcuser1058250 01-04-2003 06:17 PM

CARRIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carrie altho I wanted to get away from the puter I had to come back and answer your questions....

FIRSTLY: THROW THE SCALE AWAY.....it is your worse enemy :nono:...I repeat THROW THE SCALE AWAY ....:dizzy:

If you want to follow BFL that is.... Did you read Body for Life by Bill Philips yet? If you didn't go to the library and get it....that's what I do instead of buying it...Also visit www.leanandstrong.com very informative site

Take pics and measurements, that is your better gauge towards your accomplishements....

SECONDLY: You will lose more fat with lifting weights because muscles burn more calories ... :strong: You will NOT bulk up that is a MYTH... I wish I had the site you could go to read up on that....

Karen do you have some site names for Carrie to clear her questions?

Carrie I sure hope I'm not sounding harsh because I sure don't mean to... and feel totally free to ask away ALL your questions...
There is never ever a DUMB question!! We will never learn if we don't ask....

GEEEZZZ I'm really sounding like an L&Ser now.....

Ok now I REALLY gotta go....
