  • Well I was up getting ready to go to work at 6:30am, hanging out my washing...

How horrible for you VK it's amazing how one's perceptions of a country can be totally misleading (I'm talking about mine here about Norway... I thought it would be something like Holland)

How many different reasons have we got now? I think the last one has to be one of the most saddest I've read (not sad for you VK but for the world)

Amazonian - that conjures up a great picture. I think I'll start acting like one now (even more than I already do!!! )

I've set myself a challenge this month I know I'm not on the right thread but it's something I feel I can achieve (not without some pain I might just add ) I'm giving up alcohol for the whole of September just to see if it makes any difference to my weight loss - I'll let you all know at the end.

    Keep well and keep

  • Wow VikingMom..guess some of our reasons for losing weight looks pretty petty against yours..so sorry you have to go thru such rubbish....your post made me feel realllll THANKFUL to be an american in AMERICA!...god bless you!
  • Vm, I think it is rediculous you get ridiculed for being an American. Is it all your fault just because you are an american? Kinna like because I am from Idaho I must be a potatoe farmer!! I support the troops to but I did not send them out. I did not bomb the twin towers, I did not do any terorist acts. As I am sure you did not also. What about those muslims that followed you? Are they automaticly accused of an haneouse acts? Keep your chin up and stand as a TALL AMERICAN!

My reason is mentioned above. I want to feel taller. However I don't know if it will work for me. I am only 5'2 (&1/2 if I streach!) How tall can you feel if you are short? I guess I will have to loose the weight and find out.
  • Hi, guys! I think this is a very interesting thread and there's some great reasons on here for losing weight. I'd have to add one of my own: To be even more of a beautiful person inside and outside than I am today and than I was the day before. My second reason is to be healthy and to have great muscles and to continue to add to my self-esteem, which is pretty good but we can all improve.

Cerise: I love what you wrote here and I have to agree with you ... I have NEVER felt inferior because I weigh more than the average woman. I do not think you are wearing blinders, I think you see the situation very clearly. Please continue to have such a great attitude because it's an inspiration to me and to many others on this board!
  • The Empress Rules All
Why, thank you kindly, Amarantha. Always a pleasure to see you.

Viking Mom, I wanted to tell you how much it hurt me to hear of your problems in Norway. How hurtful it must be to be singled out for being bigger, American, whatever.

I wanted to address your story about your BIL:

I don't believe that the artist-protecting-their-environment to be a legitimate excuse for your BIL to avoid you. My husband is an artist, and I'm around them a lot, and true artists see the beauty in all things; they do not normally select a beautiful ideal and only choose to look at that. You know all this already, I'm sure, but I wanted to tell you that I strongly feel that "artists" who say what is and is not beautiful are in reality hacks of the worst kind.

Another thing I want to take up: your BIL is presupposing that your form is NOT BEAUTIFUL because it is heavier than average. I resent that in the strongest terms. How am I so sure of myself? Because I pose nude for artists, sculpters to be precise. I pose on a 2-foot platform (this took every ounce of courage I had, you can imagine) and 15 people stand all around me, carefully shaping breasts, buttocks, my nose, eyes, chin...VM, they think I'm beautiful. They comment on the smallness of my ankles, my cheekbones, the grand sweep of my buttocks into my waist. I'm not making this up. They realize that bodies come in all shapes, and all of them are in their way beautiful.

I know I'm long-winded about this and probably sound full of myself, but I want to tell you that you are beautiful, now! A true artist would see it...
  • cerise - I too have been around "artists" of one form or another and have always found them to be appreciative of fine figures of beings... I am a fine figure!!!

Ladaha I'm 5'6" so I'm not tall tall but I look tall I stand like I'm about to conquer the world... I did a bit of Alexandra Technique which sort of aligns you with your body instead of hunching up and trying to hide the practitioner showed me how I look when I stand tall.. So I do - try it you might even get that 1/2" permanently

Keep well all of you and be

  • Reason of the day. I wanna slide in and out of the car without adjusting the seat. I am a shorty 5'0 and I have to move the seat back everytime I get out. Then move it back up so I can touch the pedals!
  • Im new here.. but here we go. im sure theres more.. but.. for now..

#1: I hate not being able to fit into clothes whether it be my own or something i see at a store.

#2: I want to be heathly and feel good about myself, raise that low self esteem!

#3: I want to just feel normal... and not feel like the world is looking at me because *I* hate how I look and I feel like everyone else does too..

#4: Im only 20 and i feel like im wasting my life.. time i could spend doing things.. im just ashamed of myself and it keeps me from doing things...
  • Wow what a day!! Love all the posts. I ran my 8 year old to all of her different activities and I am tired now. She is a real goer. which brings me to my reason for the day. What started my wanting to loose weight was my D watching a weight loss show on oprah. She turned to me and said very inocently "Mom that would be cool if you did that. Most of the people on the show had lost 200-300 lbs. I weighed 188. She does not know it but it crushed me. I started running and she told me that she wants to start running with me. So tomorrow 6:00am she will make her first run w/ me. I hope to instill in her how important it is to be healthy and active. She is full of energy and life now and I hope as she grows older she does not loose that.

  • Ladaha,

I was thinking of what you were telling about what your daughter said to you, and wondered if maybe she didn't see you or think of you as being as big as the people she saw on TV, but had maybe picked up on your concern about your size and health from something you have said at one time or another?

I know how those comments can make one feel badly (my little 6 year old grandson has innocently made comments about my size) but for you it had a positive affect in that it got you moving, and doing it with your daughter will give the two of you some wonderful time together.

    Take care ~ Gayle
  • Wow!...Viking Mom guess if I went to Norway..they would just "HANG ME" in the street in front of everyone!

It is very apparent in all of your post that you are not only a very intelligent person but a person with a big heart also. I am very saddened by your post deplicting Europeans as such OBESE hatters...I know you are very clear that it is just the way it is..no sugar coating as you put it...BUT..overweight/obese people are human beings too!...What about the obese people who have TRUE health issues that sometimes make it vertually impossible to lose weight...such as thyroid and insulin resistence. I happen to have both since age 9...And you want to talk about a fierce battle to lose weight..add to that being abandoned and sexual abuse at a very early age and it is very overwhelming!...I am truly sorry if everyone here did not have the same cozy chances in life (I assume that sexual abuse..child abuse is not rampent in Eurpopean society) but it is here!!! and if that is the card you were dealt ..How can we change it?..When a European sees an obese america..he can not see the persons SCARS ON THEIR SOUL (just like you put it)..What would they have us do?...Kill ourselves?...It really sucks being this large..Do Europeans think that we like being obese..It is not as simple as eating ...whole wheat sandwiches with ham and tomatoes...I wish it was???? Yes I do agree that American schools need to look at what we are feeding our children...and WE ARE!...I know this for a fact.. In my area we know offer more healthy choices..such as a mini-salad bar and ALL snacks that are brought to school from parents must be healthy!

Your posts make me feel very sad ...We both are first human beings....Seems like Europeans just see fat...no human soals? Please don't lose the human side of yourself in trying to be invisible to the Europeans? Don't let them take your dignity.

I am not so sure that our lives in the states is so different..We have the little clicks here in our world (lawyers, doctors)..They happen to be some of my clients...and we also get looked down upon because we are fat! I must WORK hard to gain their respect..I must talk and inform...and then they see that I am not only a human being but an educated one at that..It may be something as simple as talking about a small problem they may have related to my job field..but I have enough amo in my response to blow them out of the water!!!!! and they step back and they think (I can see their wheels turning)...WOW..she may me fat..but she is one smart cookie (no pun intended)..and I gain their respect!...They realize that I have dignity first of all by my apperance (and yes it is hard as **** to find clothes at my size..but I do..I put the effort in)....and then by my work surroundings that I offer them...It speaks volumes about me! I may not get invited to all the social poo-poo parties...but who cares?....I will not define myself by the way society treats me?..The day I do ..is the day I lose myself.

I always hold my head high..I dress neatly...I smell good (no joke intended)...I am extremely educated...I pride myself with high morals and ethics..And would never look down at someone because of their size.. I approach my daily life as someone who has a contribution for the world/society..not someone who is a lazy fat person. I was only picked on in school a few times..because I think I held my head high..and thought the upmost of myself first..and demanded it from others!

How can they claim to be so concerned with the war and dying children if they are so close-minded because someone is obese?

Please don't lose yourself in their ignorance?....What makes them so **** perfect?

Viking Mom please don't think I am venting at you..I just get so tired of the weight dicrimmination!!!!.....Question for you?

If I were to ask a PERFECT European..What do I need to do to lose weight/get healthy?..What do I need to cut out....What do I need to eat daily?...What kind of exercise do I need to do?...What is there daily PERFECT life like?.....Please tell the OBESE FAT AMERICAS so we can strive to be perfect!..(sorry..vent...I really do want to know the answer)..

Please don't be so eager to conform...I worry for you! SINCERELY
  • Viking Mom
The "Axe Handler" is my friend.
  • Viking Mom! Somehow I just can't help but believe that the "axe handler" who has "missed the boat" you refer to is MOI!

Please understand that personal remarks such as this and others you have directed to me on another thread are not helpful.

Thanks. Hope you find the support you need.
  • VM I love everything you have said to me and love your input on this thread. I too agree with everything you have said on here. I hope your goals of WL will come true!
  • Well it seems there has been some action on this forum because I have a load of reported threads in my mailbox, but the posts aren't here, so I am assuming the posts have been deleted by either a moderator or by the posters.

Anyway, I would like to add something on here about the European fat haters. I am not sure what was said, but based on Skinny4baby's reply, I want to clear up some things so nobody feels like Europeans are all bad. I don't know how it is in the town that VM lived in, but I know MANY Europeans and also am married to one. I have never seen or experienced fat haters by any of them. They also have overweight people in their population! Just remember when we get upset at groups of people, it isn't fair to lump a load of people into one group. We have a lot of overweight chicks here with us that are from Europe, and I think there would be some hurt feelings if they thought the US chicks looked at their population that way.

Skinny, I know you are upset and fired up about this, so that is why I want to clear this up. I don't want you to think there is a whole continent of people that all feel the same. You asked what reasons they have for not being overweight. I do know one remarkable difference in Europeans to Americans that is related to weight, and that is the portion size of food. Most Europeans that I have met are amazed at the large portion sizes that we eat in America. Possibly if there are comments made about fat Americans, it might be as a reaction to what some of them may see as gluttony that is here with fast food and buffet style eating. Again, I don't know what was said, I'm just trying to defend the ones that I know don't fall in this category. Restaurants are generally a different atmosphere in Europe. Buffets are much more common in the US. Also, in Europe, you don't get free refills on drinks (or if so, I think it isn't common), and the focus on customer service in European restaurants isn't as strong. In my opinion, I think a lot of people I know get hooked on restaurants because we have a server at our beck and call so they can make a good tip. While we are in the restaurant, we are pampered, have an everlasting cup of pepsi, and all the restaurants are competing with each other, so the portion sizes just grow! I was thinking about this - tomorrow, Amy, Suzanne and I will get together. Where are we doing it? A restaurant. The reason being - we are meeting halfway between our towns, and there isn't anywhere else to go really ... in Europe they have loads of cafes, coffee shops, taverns, parks, but in a lot of smaller cities in America, we don't have that choice. Suzanne posted earlier on another thread that in our local phone book we have something like 5 gym listings, but like 8-9 pages of restaurants!

The other big difference I can think of is our lack of activity compared to the average European. Riding bikes and walking far distances, often carrying groceries or other packages, does burn some calories. It is common for Americans to walk the length to their car, and then the car to the store. In Europe, it isn't uncommon to not even own a car. Many cities in Europe are very condensed. In my town, we drive 5 minutes to get groceries. In my husband's old town, he walked to one in less time. When Suzanne lived in England, she walked most of the time. Taxi's were rarely used by her, and that was basically once a week for larger trips to the grocery. Gas is also 2-3 times more expensive there, so walking and biking is much more common. Basically they have more activity and less food.

Oh - an afterthought here. The car driving in America just leads us past a McD's on every corner, and while I am not sure how the prices are now, a few years ago fast food was quite a bit more expensive in Europe.

One other reason is a controversial one - and that is the amount of medication that Americans take. We have pills for everything. I know expats that live in Europe and they stock up on pain relievers and antibiotics, if they can get them, when they come to the US. I can't speak for all of Europe, but The Netherlands and some of the Scandinavian countries are very pro-alternative healthcare. Anti-depressants, SSRI's, steroids, tranquilizers, etc can wreak havoc on the metabolism. In some parts of Europe, natural and herbal care is more accepted, and some believe over all much healthier. Like I said, controversial subject, and I am in no way educated enough about it to give my own opinion on it.

I hope you have a better feeling about Europeans in general. I am not sure what was said before, but it did look like you were fired up about it and I don't want you to think there is an entire continent that looks down on you! My husband and my friends see me for what is inside. I am sure they have their share of unkind people just like we do in America , but they also have understanding ones as well.
