I forgot to add, any trainer worth their salt will not push you further than you can handle. They'll push you outside your comfort zone for sure, but they want you to come back, so they're not going to try to drive you away. I've been working with a trainer for about 6 months, and he told me from the start that "no" is a complete sentence. If he asks me to do something that hurts or scares me, I can just say no.

I like the idea of starting out on a treadmill, or elliptical, or bike and observing at first. And maybe ask if you can consult with the trainer before you work out together - even if it's by email, you can lay out your fitness level, expectations, goals and fears.
