I like software myself. I use
Crosstrainer 6. It is not free, but once you've paid for the software, then you are good and you don't have to be online to use it. It really makes counting calories very easy and is also nice for logging meds/supplements as well as weight workouts and cardio. You can request an unlock key to use it on more than a single computer too.
I guess it's all in what you like. I tried out a bunch of diet softwares before settling on Crosstrainer as the easiest for me to use. I also tried Fitday and Sparkpeople, couldn't stand either. Previous to getting Crosstrainer, I used a software called Lifeform, which was good, but kind of dated looking. It didn't allow me to record weight workouts in detail though.
