lol at the above poster about gobbling it up and not like someone is gonna take it from you. maybe its an instinctual thing from our ancestors when food was scarce ! lol
It's been proven to be an instinctual thing from restricting calories.
I eat quickly. And I'm actually a tongue thruster (I press my tongue against my front teeth when I swallow). When I was a kid I had to go to tongue therapy and when I ate I had to eat with a mirror in front of me (how tourturous for a fat kid!) It didn't work, I still do it, but I digress. The main things they attempted to train me to do in order to eat slower were to put down my fork after each bite, take a deliberate breath, take a sip of water, another breath, the next bite.
I love Dr. Gillian McKeith - You are what you eat. on the BBC...I learned alot from her and I have her 3 books I want to make sure I have all her books.
She is great Now if only I can follow the diet she lays out.

Restricting calories? OMG. You made me laugh out loud. Literally. What, are you kidding? I must have been packing away 5000 - 6000 calories a day. Maybe more. You gotta eat fast when you're eating that many calories. There's just not enough time in the day otherwise.

Nope. They showed that on restricted diets, when food became available again, people binged and ate fast.
I eat fast, wayyyyy tooo fast. My children (adults now) do also. I don't know why, I mean you would think we were starving to death! LOL.......I wish I knew how to slow down, but when I try to change my habits, it only lasts a few days, and I am back at the race again. I watched that show with the guy who taught about eating slower, chewing 25 times, laying the fork down, enjoying your food and all. I tried it for a week or so and it really helped, but as always I went back to my way of eating - the Indianapolis 500!
Shrug, I guess it's OK because I don't get your confusion either, so I don't even really know how to clarify. Maybe putting the whole thing in one string will help. Echo commented about maybe we gobble our food because of our ancestral roots, and I referred to studies that show that restricting calories makes people gobble their food. I thought it seemed connected, YMMV.

I have always been an obnoxiously slow eater. I bug people because I take forever to finish my meals. My idea of eating fast is other people's idea of eating normally. I have this problem with swallowing.. like I'll think too much about the act of swallowing and it will become more and more difficult to do without having only a little food to swallow at a time... kind of a mental problem, I guess. One of my biggest fears is of choking, and that kind of ties into it, I think.
Anyway, to get back on topic... honestly, I wouldn't worry about how fast you eat unless YOU are bothered by it. Don't try to change it just because you feel you're "supposed to." Just make sure you track how much you eat and don't overeat and eat in the way that makes you most comfortable. Otherwise eating will just start to seem like a chore!

THIS. I'm a fast eater, and I've tried to slow down before, but then my meals just make me miserable and I end up overeating later because I'm not "satisfied" enough. I've eaten faster than average as far back as I can remember - I was probably 6 or 7 years old when people starting pointing it out to me.
I've read all that stuff about how it takes time for your body to realize you're not hungry anymore, so I'll eat the amount I plan on eating, and then regardless of how I feel, I wait a while. If I'm still hungry in 20-30 minutes, there will still be food available somewhere.
So, I've decided I will just keep eating fast, and I'll laugh politely at everyone's dumb jokes about it for the rest of my life. I do slow down a bit in public now, for that reason. But if I'm by myself, you better believe I'm eating lunch in 10 minutes or less!
