Sorry - I certainly don't mean to tell you how to raise your child... it's just that... I REALLY WISH my mother had not let me have that Nestle Crunch Bar every day at recess at school....
well, since you don't know how I define Junk maybe it's different.

she has canned pasta to me that's junk
she has ramen noodles (she loves it after school and we've discussed that it's really bad for her but at 15 she can make her own decisions)
she has white wheat pretzels to me that's junk
she has yogurt with fruit I don't eat that either
there are hot dogs (hebrew national) I won't eat them either
the only ice cream are healthy choice fudge pops she has one a day of those
she does get breakfast bars usually cliff or luna bars but she likes the trader joes breakfast bars too

to many folks what i just listed is a regular diet. to me that's junk food.

there is no candy
there are no french fries
and no SODA
she can drink water or tea

I think most folks think "junk food" means worse stuff than that, LadyBug--so if that's all you include, then it sounds a lot better than it could be!

Thanks Jay that was kind of my point. I worry about what she eats... with her grandfather and great grandfather both insulin dependent and her grandmother with high blood pressure, she's got a bad gene pool....but at 15 and exercising all day she's 5'8 and about 130 pounds in the winter... she wears about a size 6-8 now...

Yes, I suppose we all do identify junk differently....
For instance.... To me...

canned pasta = junk
ramen noodles = junk (my husband LOVES those things...)
white wheat pretzels - Not junk, eaten in proper portion size
yogurt with fruit - Not junk, in fact, one of my "treats"
hot dogs = junk
healthy choice fudge pops (one a day of those) - Not junk; a treat
breakfast bars ...cliff or luna bars....trader joes breakfast bars.... = not junk, but not necessarily healthy, either

My husband likes to eat things like Pop Tarts & Cinna-buns for breakfast... that's the kind of junk that finds it's way into my house... sometimes I can talk him into having Raisin Bran instead of Captain Crunch for breakfast.... or baked chicken instead of Hamburger Helper for dinner.... I just can't eat that stuff. Well, every NOW & THEN I get a craving for a pop tart... but it's rare.

well there are no pop-tarts or cold cereals in my house...we have oatmeal

and hambuger helper is a thing of the past. I assume your husband is buying these things and bringing them home and cooking them himself?

cause in MY house it's MY kitchen and you eat what i buy and what i make.

Could you please explain what you mean when you say "YOU like ME are here"?

As far as in-laws are concerned, I deal with people who think that my family is weird not to have all the things most families consider "normal" in the house like soda, chips etc. and these are things I have never kept in the house. It always amazes me that people sometimes think that a person has more than average fat instantly knows nothing about nutrition! The opposite is often true, as many of us here know! My "thinner" friends all come to me for the latest nutritional information, as they are clueless about matters of health!

My daughter is 14 and I feel great that I have always taught her about the importance of nutrition (from an early age). She says that what we consider to be junk food, others think of as "healthy choices"

I've never had "Pop Tarts" or "Hamburger Helper" and neither has my child! I guess I am in the minority!

"you like me are here" bad punctuation on my part.. You, like me, are here (at 3FC) I meant we both have knowledge that others do not...
clear as mud?

as for hamburger helper and poptarts we never had those at home either growing up.

we ate fish 3 times a week
we ate liver once a week
the rest of the time was chicken... baked
nothing was ever fried
our nightly treat was popcorn that daddy made in the AIR POPPER
cereals were cheerios, oatmeal and kix
there was salad, fruit and veggies at every meal.

i did not learn my bad eating habits at home that's for sure.

My mother cooked good meals when I was growing up - I ate healthy, most of the time. But I also had a sweet tooth from ****, & she exacerbated that by never telling me NO.

My husband, on the other hand... his mother rarely cooked when he was growing up. Most everything they ate was microwaved or came from the burger joint around the corner.

As for today - we pretty much cook/fend for ourselves. He gets home at a much later hour than I do, so I've usually eaten & cleaned up by the time he walks in the door. I don't cook a lot - but when I do, it is mostly pretty healthy. Baked chicken, fish, etc. Sometimes we have spaghetti, but I cut way down on the portion size, whereas hubby eats at least 2 huge plate fulls. We just eat very differently; so it makes sense that most of the time, we fix for ourselves.

we have fend for yourself about 50% of the time. hubby fends for himself based on what I have in the house

a salmon burger on the grill with bread as a sandwich works for him i'd have it on salad....

interestingly enough my husband did SBD with me at first and lost a good deal of weight.. now he's taking a break and while I worry about his health, he's a grown up and i've let it go that he's eating badly.... i'm not his mom.

I guess I'm very grateful that the only cooking my boyfriend does is grilling..that's all he knows how to do. He depends on me for cooking and likes it when I cook. I know how to make dairy-free, healthy foods....sometimes even vegan and he loves it. I don't think I've ever seen him not eat and love something that I made. He actually asks me not to bake him stuff because he doesn't like eating "junk". He likes to eat jello with cool whip or sugar free angelfood cake with me for desserts.

He's always been a healthy eating and would rather eat grilled chicken and a potato than eat Mcdonalds.

HOWEVER....if he ever started gaining a substantial amount of weight and had health issues because of it...I would voice my concern..although I would not nag. I do, however, mention the unhealthiness of his smoking every once in a while. He has tried to quit many times. I know that harping on someone doesn't change their attitude towards what they're doing, but mentioning how much I care about him and how much I want to be with him for the rest of my life, not for the rest of HIS life....makes him think and he knows where my concern lies and that I love him.

anyways...I just really went off topic, but I guess that probably nobody minds. Can you tell I've been concerned about him lately? *sigh*

The girl is 15!! If she likes "junk", she will get it, regardless of what's in the home. Granted, she'd have more, if more was accessable to her, but I think from what Nessa posted that your Average Household has more junk than that..and it's nice to have a treat here and there esp if you are active, a healthy body weight, and a teenager.

Ah yes, I remember when I was 15. What did I have for breakfast every day?
A Coke and a yogurt (I kid you not)
I used to have an iron gut..LOL

I eat far healthier now than I did when I was 15 and 40lbs thinner athough then I didn't overeat and I was way more active

Sheila, do you calorie count?
If you do, have your bread.
I have a piece of bread several times a week and its extremely satisfying ..
just have it with lots of protein too.
As a matter of fact, today I deviated from plan a bit bc I REALLY wanted trashy fluffy bread so I had a hot dog bun (and @ 110 calories it sooooo coulda been worse) sometimes you just need a piece of trashy fluffy goodness
