What veggie do you STILL hate? (part 2)
The original thread lived a long life and hopefully made some of us think twice about a few veggies we thought we didn't like. Though I still don't like cauliflower!
So.... What vegetable do you absolutely hate? Is this something you've hated since you were a child, and have not given it another chance? Have you tried cooking it multiple ways, in case it tasted better in another version? |
Water chestnuts. The texture makes my teeth hurt just thinking about it.
|
Beets :barf:
|
green beans, peas, beats.. the list could go on.. basically all vegetables with the exception of asparagus, broccoli and the the lettuces that come in the spring salad mix. LOL It's taken my husband a long time to get me to eat the few veggies I will eat... the poor guy!
|
I have a lot of canned green beans (like 7 cans) and I just can't quite eat them. They are great in green bean casserole but plain they are EW. I don't want to waste them, but I try and try and try to eat them... gag.
I also can't do celery... unless it's drenched in a few 100 calories of peanut butter. I keep buying it and trying it with some lite dips I make, but nope. Ew. The same for cooked spinach. Unless it's in a creamy cheese vehicle or on a pizza, the texture and taste make me gag. I have gotten better about eating them. My favorite vegetables are green peppers, zucchini, asparagus, broccoli if it's cooked and seasoned right, and some times cauliflower depending on the circumstances :). |
Peas. I so want to like them. They seem like the perfect thing to throw in every dish. But bleck. I throw them in and then eat around them or pick them out. I try them in restaurants. I try them fresh from the farmer's market. And still I do not like them.
|
I will have to agree with the majority here and say peas. I friggin' hate those little green jerks.
Peas have been the bane of my existence since the early years. I really don't think there is a way to prepare peas and have me like them. I can tolerate pretty much every other vegetable in existence, including the much chagrined okra! Peas though...ugh. Keep them away! |
Well to the pea haters - I would not sweat it as the little round lovelies are a starchy vegetable. I must confess to loving them. As a child it was creamed peas with fresh dill (heavenly), and now I toss them in various preps for a sweet nugget to balance the dish. And of course they are the best ice pack ;)
|
umm... does it count as knowing i hate it if i still THINK i hate it and refuse to try it again?
if yes then, brussel sprouts, beets, and radishes. i can eat tons of other veggies though so i don't sweat it too much. i used to hate broccoli too and there was not enough cheese sauce in my whole days' worth of calories to make it edible so i just didn't bother. as of today, I steamed two cups and added Frank's Red Hot Buffalo Sauce and parmesan cheese and HOLY CRAP it tasted like WINGS. Thank you God, for blessing me with Frank's Red Hot. I think it could make anything delish. |
Pretty much any cooked veggie except for corn. It's just the texture of it that does it for me. Raw I can usually handle with only mild complaints, but things like cooked peas and carrots... Bleh
|
Cucumbers and celery. I see so many people here who adore these two pale green harbingers of pukey death, but they remain the only two vegetables I truly cannot abide on their own. I've broadened my vegetable horizons to include everything from arugula to zucchini and will eat virtually anything else set before me, but celery is so nasty that I don't even like to chop it as an ingredient because that penetrating smell gets on my hands.
I envy people who consider these things food; they're so low-calorie, I really wish I could enjoy them. :( |
- Vegetable pear or chayote... I've tried so many times but I still hate it. I don't know if it's the taste or texture, or both.
- Ginger... except if it's tea... otherwise, I spit it out :p - BAMBOO... just yuck!!! |
Bell peppers of any kind and zucchini... BLEH

Okay I'm really pickey. Always have been. People used to ask me "so what DO you like?" I have a texture issue okay!!! Welllll I have been trying very hard to introduce new (healthy) foods into my diet. I can now withstand the following veggies without wanting to gourge an eye out or something =P
Cucumber Tomato colorful peppers avacado carrots artichoke I've always liked raw spinich (not cooked eww!) lettuce and salad greens of sorts green beans water chesnuts brocolli cauliflower asparagus I still can not stand: Peas! Okra zucchini squash and I'm sure a multitude of others I have yet to think of or have tried! |
asparagus
cauliflower edamame dark lettuces, they are too bitter turnip greens kale rubarb brussel sprouts radishes celery unless it's cooked I am sure there are more those are just the ones I can remember. Even the veggies I like I don't want to eat much of. |
Brussels Sprouts
I hated them as a child and have recently attempted to embrace then but still avoid them as much as possible. While roasting them makes them more palatable, they're still bitter IMO. |
okra and celery. Anything else, I'm fine!

Beets- neverrrrr gunna even....dont bother trying. |
When it comes to veggies, I can be pretty finicky and child-like, but most I can tolerate, particularly if they are cooked. For me it's a flavor thing, not a texture thing, but cooking seems to mellow veggies out and allow one to introduce herbs and spices.
But those that I have always hated: Carrots (yes, I know everyone loves them, but the taste - gack!) Fresh tomatoes (I love them stewed, sauced, dried, but not fresh) Nori (why must you eff up lovely sushi!?) |
Radishes and beets. :-)
|
First corn and green beans, these are the most tasteless veggies I've tried, bell peppers give me hickups for a day or two, so it's hard to enjoy them
Oh, and fennel... |
Any veggie that's over cooked
Okra - I gag on it Cooked celery but it's fine raw Brussels sprouts although I can eat them roasted Vegetable marrow - a nothing vegetable Any vegetable cooked with fish en papillote - Who likes fishy veggies? |
I dont think theres any veggie I really dislike. I feel blah about peas. I can do without them. Maybe thats a good thing-- I see the farmers market and get exdxcited! Maybe im crazy. :p
|
okra! The only way it is bearable is if it's deep fried and smothered in spices! Its just so slimy otherwise...Another vegetable I absolutely cannot stand is radish.
|
Corn - got sick on it as a kid, and even the smell makes me gag.
Tomatoes - I have to agree with George Carlin on this: they don't look like they are done, yet. :) I can eat salsa, marinara, or ketchup, just no raw tomatoes. Iceberg lettuce - just too dang bitter for me. Romaine is fine, although I've found I prefer fresh spinach to lettuces. Lima & butter beans - Just plain gross. |
It has to be the texture that does it for me:
-cooked peas -cooked green beans -any type of squash There's something about all of those foods that make me gag as soon as they touch my tongue. I find it interesting though because I love raw peas (which aren't allowed on IP) and I enjoy raw green beans...they're a little crunchy but it's way better than the texture they have no matter how they're cooked. To pose another question...what are some veggies that people like and find helpful to switch up the staples on this diet? I was a meat and potatoes girl up until I started IP last week. Although, I enjoy salads and some veggies I'm having a really tough time not cheating because I can't seem to get enough variety. |
Lima Beans!
|
I cannot deal with onions, mushrooms or tomatoes(Although I eat salsa, pasta sauce, etc.). A lot of these have to do with textures and whatnot, I can't bite into an onion, I don't like the flavor either. Mushrooms I like the flavor okay but the texture creeps me out, I don't like the sort of squishy bite back or the juice, they tend to hold moisture being a fungi and all. Tomatoes, I can eat if they're REALLY seasoned and ground up and mixed with other things, hence, the salsa and sauces. Other than that I like most other veggies.
|
I basically love all veggies, with the exception of celery and cooked spinach. It doesn't matter if you try to cook the spinach with something else, I'll still taste it, and won't wanna eat it. And celery is just too bland and completely tasteless. BLEHCK!!!!:barf:
|
since it was mentioned - I'm not a big fan of cooked spinach myself. cooked baby spinach is ok, but the full grown leafs leaves that iron, gritty taste in my mouth that doesn't go away for awhile. But I'll eat both raw, so I can't say I don't like spinach at all.
I've never had okra or brussels sprouts so not sure if I'd like them. In the other thread I said I didn't like raw tomatoes - and I swore I would never ever like them. Well - I think eating them in salsa, chili and other foods has helped me adjust to their taste. I'm starting to actually put a few slices on my sandwiches and on salads. I'm training myself to atleast tolerate them since they are on almost everything and everywhere and they are a pretty decent vegetable nutrition wise. |
Its a tie between Brussel sprouts,Artichoke, and Eggplant! BLAGH!
|
I used to be a vegetable-hater until I went vegetarian (long story, personal reasons not worth getting into because, meh, who cares! LOL).
Point is, now I'm FORCED to have a relationship with vegetables so that I can get the right nutrition. What I found is that crusing websites looking for vegetarian recipes gave me a whole new way of looking at preparing and eating veggies. You wouldn't believe the inventive things some folks have done with vegetables, and a lot of them are really, really good. There's a magazine called Vegetarian Times that has spectacular recipes. I still cannot abide lima beans or okra, but everything else? Yeah, I'm down with it. :carrot: |
Cauliflower. Can't stand it, and never will be able to. I've tried it on a number of occasions and always end up gagging. xD
|
We have carrots, brocolli, roma tomatoes and bag salad in the fridge. Right now, I'd have to say, I hate the raw brocolli. I dunno what it is, but I always feel like I'm eatting a little mini-afro, and I feel bad chewing it. I have to have a little fat free salad dressing on it, or chase it with water or else I sit there chewing it for a hour because I can't force myself to swallow.
Celery would be my number 2 hated veggie. I just don't like how it gives off that celery smell when I bite it. On a plus note, I've started liking carrots a bit and I like how the roma tomatoes pop in my mouth lol. |
Mushrooms surely. I just dont like the texture.
|
I hate ALL vegetables, raw, cooked, steamed, baked, whatever. Yep, I'm doomed I know. All except rice, potaotes and corn (are these even veggies?). I need to find a way of incorporating them into my diet, but dont know where to start. Whenever I find vegetables before me, I feel as if im being punished for my weight gain. Help!!!
|
I love just about every vegetable when prepared (not all can be eaten raw) except PEAS. I could eat them if I had to but I would not be sad if I never ate one ever again.
|
Two Words:
Baby Corn |
Peas
When I was kid, I refused to eat them. My dad force fed them to me and I threw them up. I still can't stomach them to this day, 24 years later. |
