Jill...I was wondering how long it took for you to lose the weight you have lost? Also did you lose it all with the Skinny book? What does an average day of eating look like for you?
if you are a body builder or a diabetic, you need some degree of nutritional planning, period. omnivore or veg. same goes if you are trying to lose weight.
It's true that the average american gets MUCH more protein than needed, however there are also studies indicating that the body uses animal protein differently than plant protein. A big part of this is certain amino acids that aren't present in plant proteins.
anyway, with regard to the book - i found it entertaining. I like the bluntness, could have done without some of the profanity but it didn't bother me per se.
I read skinny ***** and thought it was written in a language that was an easy read. It added some crass humor with facts and opionions. It made reading a book feel like it was as short at a magazine article.
I can understand that it is not for everyone but I definately laughed out loud at a lot of the things written. It was real and written in everday language as if it was a conversation heard at a girls night or something like that.
I was vegan before I read it but i couldnt resist it my friend had a copy and had no idea it was a vegan book.
anyways I appreciate the more traditional style writings such as the china study and a diet for a new america but this skinny b was funny.
I always am looking up new recipes and finding new things I can try its great! I really love vegetables so much more now.
I love brussel sprouts 'pan fryed' in olive oil and fresh garlic, sea salt & pepper.
JASMINE... Yeah I think it was the same for me with the book, made it less boring I guess with the easy to read language. I still try to read other vegan books but I get bored quick. Obviously the language could have been held back, but then would the book have got so much good and bad press? Who knows I'm just glad I picked it up. I have so much more energy and am so happy with my decision in general.
Also I only drink water, fruit juice, or flavored water occasionally. So I'm not drinking 10 sodas- diet or non- everyday which will help, but I haven't drank soda for a few years.
Skinny B is one of my favorite books! It was nice to learn about veganism without something with the PETA label on it. (I'm 100% for animal rights, but PETA's just not the group for me...)
I liked the mean language. It was just a bit more fun. :3
I became vegetarian before reading this book, but I think this is what'll help me stay at least vegetarian.
Was this on the general boards originally?
I don't know why they would move it.
People post about all kinds of different diets.
Nobody was slamming a meat eating diet, just expressing what worked for them.
What is so avant garde about eating healthy?
Don't we have the right to express what works for us, and makes us feel better, as much as anyone else?
Don't others have the right to learn from our experience? That is what started it all for me.
It really did not make sense to move this thread. I don't complain when someone posts about a diet I find unhealthy. I just say glad it works for you! and move along.
Anyway,
I bought the book a couple of weeks ago but haven't read it yet. I plan to, especially now.
I got this book after reading this thread...I have decided to go vegetarian too. I'm allergic to dairy...and so I thought what the heck, I might as well see if I get any healthier.
But, I've got to say...although I agree with a lot of the book...I find it really hard to enjoy it. Everything was fine until I looked at the references. Did you notice they are almost all internet websites (mostly from PETA or PETA related/sponsored sites...soooooo biased!). I guess if I'm reading a book about a possible life change I'd rather have an unbiased source, so I can get all the information I need. When I was in college, I remember writing research papers. No more than 2 sources could be from online---and they had to be unbiased. I just really am uncomfortable knowing the majority of this book was researched online. There are not many studies at all!
Also, and I'm really not trying to slam the book...just a few things I've noticed (I do recommend reading this book, there is a lot of info that could really be valuable to a lot of people)...I didn't really enjoy the emphasis the book put on being "skinny"...it was skinny this, skinny that... It vaguely mentioned being healthy. It just seems like it is the sort of book that could really send someone with an eating disorder---or borderline eating disorder into a spiral of unhealthy behaviors.
But I'm glad for you Jill! Anything that makes a good change is a step in the right direction. We all find inspiration in different things.
I did pretty well today too! I slipped once...I had some feta cheese on a spinach salad...Partially because I don't want it to go to waste (I'm a poor kid!)...dinner was amazing though! Masala rice with lentils and the spinach salad. Then about 2 hours after I had 1 oz of soy jerkey. It was YUMMMMY!
Yes it was moved because apparently it could potentially be offensive to some person. Nevermind the fact I get grossed out everytime I have to read a recipe for chicken this or lamb shank that . Talk about offensive! Go healthy, don't cause harm - crazy talk!
ETA - I understand specific diets should not be discussed in general but I was under the impression books could be.

The thread was moved, because we have a vegan/vegetarian section of the forum.
The General Diet Plans area is mainly for posts about diet plans that we do not have a separate category for, and for posts/questions about those plans. When we have a large enough group of people at 3FC following a certain plan-vegan, calorie counting, Weight Watchers, LAWL, or whatever, when it becomes large enough, it gets it's own section of the forum.
This thread was not moved because anyone did anything wrong, or because it offended anyone. If a thread was started about, say a Weight Watchers question/concern, it would be moved to the WW section of the forum as well.
Please don't take offense, when there wasn't anything personal meant to any of you by the move.
In general, a book discussion would go into 'general chatter' but its more about a lifestyle change.
Also, mods tend to move threads to the areas that make the most sense. So a book about veganism would go into the veg forum. A book about weight loss with weight watchers would go in the weight watchers forum. The second best option would probably be general chatter.
