Jackie--Here's a good website for neat things to do in Paris:

The Rue Mouffetard that he mentions is a definite YES! The market is charming, and I did go on a Sunday and sang along with the French to the accordian music of Christian. Take a Bateau Mouche ride down the Seine. You can catch the boats at Pont Alma (Alma Bridge) and they leave all the time. The Eiffel Tower is fantastic with its views, but get there first thing (and I mean First Thing!!!) in the morning, or you will have a long wait in line. I hate lines, so I would not have gone if my school had not taken our group on what I ended up calling "forced marches." Another fine view, but a lot lower, is from the roof of the Arab World Institute building, right on the Seine.
My favorite place in Paris is the Musee d'Orsay (the Orsay museum) with its mind-boggling exhibit of room after room of impressionist paintings. All the famous ones are there. Again, there is always a line here, so late in the day (they close at 5) or be there when the doors open. If you are into museums, buy a museum pass that will get you past the lines. The Louvre is not my cup of tea. You'd need a week just to cover all the displays, and most of it was old paintings of people that I didn't know, and I was an art major. The Mona Lisa is there, but there were hundreds of people mobbed around it that it was a pain just to wade through the masses to get a glimpse.
There is a great pastry shop right off the République metro stop, on Rue Temple. It has the best croissants in town, and they are worth every bite, off plan. Just heavenly. I always got something with apples in it.
There is a street off the Rue Mouffetard which has some nice restaurants with excellent prices. For lunch, a definite YES! It's about 3/4 of the way up the street from the bottom of the hill (the street slopes upwards) and a little before you get to the small plaza with the Hagan Daaz store. BTW, on the way to that plaza, there is an artisinal ice cream shoppe on the right hand side that sells fabulous ice cream. When you order a cone they don't just glob a scoop on the cone, but shope the whole thing so that it resembles a beautiful rose. Again, a definite YES!
The Latin Quarter on the left bank has hundreds of tiny streets, quaint and charming. and very cheap eateries. Avoid eating at the places near the Rue de Huchette, a block off the main road running along the south side of the Seine, near Notre Dame. They call that area bacteria alley. Notre Dame is beautiful and you can get in and walk around without paying anything. Also, the Ile St. Louis, the other island in the Seine right next to Notre Dame (which is on the Ile de Cité) is very charming, although expensive. Let me know if you want more information. If you are arriving at Charles de Gaulle, you can take the Metro into the city.
Monet--Thanks for starting the board. You're our hero.
There's a great article in the USA Today (which you can read online--go to the "print edition"--about exercise and weight loss. Of course, they highly recommend exercise, and even talk about pedometers and the minimum of 10000 steps. They say that, on average, people walk about 5310 spd. So far I have 7200 and am going again for my 15000. I have my weight lifting this afternoon, so have a full day exercise-wise.
Here's some calorie counts for various popular activities--per hour for a 170 pound person:
Sleeping - 70
Watching TV - 75
Typing/ working at the computer - 140
Weight training - 230
Walking - 345
Aerobic dance - 460
If you have a favorite exercise and it's not listed, let me know and I'll see if it's on the list.
I spent $620 on the rest of our trees today. I bought 2 huge river birches and 2 nice sized bottle brush trees. Also got a small crepe myrtle to plant near where our neighbor cut down our perfectly good oak tree. I hope our tree man can plant them next week. The big live oak (about 25 feet tall) he will palnt in Feb.
Food today:
B. SB pancakes with SF syrup and 1 peach. Iced tea
L. 4 oz. lean beef hamburger on 1 sl. SGWW bread with lettuce, onion, tomato, mustard and catsup. 1 slice honeydew melon. I also had on my menu 1/2 cup black beans (for the fiber) but was too full to eat that. Maybe for snack.
I was gonna paint our new gate in front of our garbage can area, but it looks like rain, so may not get to finish that job. It has rained so much and so hard here that I've had to wait for 2 or 3 dry days so the wood will be dry.
Pancho, I think I'll ask my holistic doctor about that stuff next time I go. She may have some in her office. Thanks for the info.
Hope everyone has a good day.
