Well, my husband just called and my "darling" 11 y/o son broke a window out of one of his friend's home. They were horsing around and Seth put his hand through the window. I know I should probably be mad at him, but he was so upset that the mother was "disappointed" in them. Oh, well. Life goes on, I guess.
I forgot to mention that this week-end I finally found a store here that carries agave for $4.29 a bottle. I'm so excited! Later, Trish |
Crimson Tide
Jackie--just popped in and saw your question about Bama's mascot. I meant to answer the first time you asked it.
Here goes. From the UA website--The name "Crimson Tide" is supposed to have first been used by Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald. He used "Crimson Tide" in describing an Alabama-Auburn game played in Birmingham in 1907, the last football contest between the two schools until 1948 when the series was resumed. The game was played in a sea of mud and Auburn was a heavy favorite to win. But, evidently, the "Thin Red Line" played a great game in the red mud and held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus gaining the name "Crimson Tide." Zipp Newman, former sports editor of the Birmingham News, probably popularized the name more than any other writer. The Elephant (mascot is known as "Big AL")--again from the UA website: The story of how Alabama became associated with the "elephant" goes back to the 1930 season when Coach Wallace Wade had assembled a great football team. On October 8, 1930, sports writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story of the Alabama-Mississippi game he had witnessed in Tuscaloosa four days earlier. Strupper wrote, "That Alabama team of 1930 is a typical Wade machine, powerful, big, tough, fast, aggressive, well-schooled in fundamentals, and the best blocking team for this early in the season that I have ever seen. When those big brutes hit you I mean you go down and stay down, often for an additional two minutes. "Coach Wade started his second team that was plenty big and they went right to their knitting scoring a touchdown in the first quarter against one of the best fighting small lines that I have seen. For Ole Miss was truly battling the big boys for every inch of ground. "At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity. "It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size." Strupper and other writers continued to refer to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants," the color referring to the crimson jerseys. Ok, so it still makes no sense--but I have to admit that we in Alabama are not big on making sense with what we call our football teams. After all here at Auburn, we are the Tigers, we scream "War Eagle!" and our mascot is a Golden Eagle named "Tiger." Well, actually it was announced this week that Tiger is retiring. Our new mascot is a Bald Eagle named Spirit. Got that? Susan |
Quickie!
MAE, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! http://www.rainbowconnextion.com/images/C39j.jpg JACKK, wish I could answer your question but you know I have no clue about the elephant! Seems GATOR does though! For some reason, I don't like drinking out of glasses, unless I'm at a restaurant. I drink from a 1.5liter bottle. I've tried just about everything, I just don't think about drinking even when it's right in front of me and I KNOW that I'm dehydrated big time, you'd think I'd be gulping it down, but I'm not:nono: I just have to keep on trying. MOM, see you at chat! TRISH, well, you didn't say SETH was hurt, no cuts, so that's good. It was an accident, they happen-he sure didn't mean to do it. Not a bad price on the agave! Okay, I'm outta here til chat time! {{HUGS}} Deb |

Hi Friends!
I'm trying a little experiment with the apostrophe mixup I'm having. GATOR, thanks for your words of advice. The first thing I'm trying is to turn off "smart quotes" in the AppleWorks preference. We'll see what happens. More to come. Kim |
Tuesday Night
Yippee, it worked! Well, that was easy. MUCH easier than my afternoon. I went to the post office to have our newsletters mailed. Well, I know nothing about this standard non-profit mailing rate. But one of the women over there told me to come at a certain time and she'd help me. I got there with all 1300 pieces of my mailing and she was out to lunch. Well, it just went south from there. One nice man helped a lot. I did have everything in zip code order which helped a lot. So we got everything in the proper tray and he told me what to calculate and how to fill out the form. Then we got up to the counter to pay and the woman said your account is inactive! Oh please! We had just paid the $150 in late December so we'd be ready when the newsletter was done. They couldn't find any record of our payment. They weren't going to accept the mailing and my boss is standing there ready to lose it at any minute. Thank goodness, she called our bookkeeper who quick faxed our receipt over to the post office. Whew! Anyways, we ended up being there for 1.5 hours trying to get this all taken care of. Please know that I'm not saying anything bad about the postal service. Their job is very difficult. It was just so frustrating that one person hadn't recorded the payment where it should have been and that was putting a real stoppage to what we wanted.
Needless to say I was so stressed by the time this was all over, my first thoughts were "what am I going to stuff down my throat?" Isn't that amazing how we just automatically turn to food. Well, I went back to the office and ate my lunch (exactly what I'd brought with no supplements of illegal proportion). I'm still kind of irritable from all that, but it's fading fast. I wrote a whole bunch of stuff in my journal tonight about how being obese makes me feel and how losing weight makes me feel. That helped my mood immensely. Okay, response time: LIN----Hey, thanks for telling me where to find the pecan recipe. That sounds so yummy! I can't wait to try it. But I think I'll wait for a while, since I'm just now back up on the wagon. I should probably hold off for a bit. FRUIT----You are sounding so GREAT!!! That's cool. I'm glad you are feeling better. Isn't weird how different days bring different feelings? So glad you are on the upswing of happiness and on the downswing of the scales. Get rid of that nasty old retained water! I'll be starting any day now and I'm feeling quite puffy. GRACIOUS---Hey, girl! Congrats on the FOUR POUND LOSS!!! Fantastic! You are doing great! Perhaps your weekend helped. I love pinks and greens together. They are a perfect compliment. How big is your square? Big enough to do something with? Like make a pillow? Have you seen those miniature quilts? They are incredible. They actually give me a headache because I can't even imagine working on them. The best quilting book I have is called The New Sampler Quilt by Diana Leone. It's got every square you can imagine in it with really great instructions. When I was taking lessons five years ago, the teacher recommended that book to us. DEB---I loved that article about maintaining weight. That reminds me of what LDBLOND sent yesterday that said you should ONLY snack on fruits and veggies. Can't do that if you don't have any in your house. What kind of car is your mom going to buy? Something sporty? Paul's niece is very artistic. She and I visited the one bead shop one day and when I found out they offered classes, I kind of got excited. I've always wanted to try it. I need a craft that gives me instant gratification and isn't very messy. That's one thing about quilting. I would have the entire upstairs all torn up when I was trying to sew. This jewelry fits nicely on my desk. My bead collection is growing steadily. Paul found me a nice plastic case with adjustable compartments to keep organized. So it's working nicely. I'm almost finished with a necklace I started last night. The SB board postings cut into my craft time, but that's no problem. You are right that being thin and piling on clothes is a lot easier way to solve that problem. I don't like to do too much layering of sweaters now, because I don't need to add dimension. That's for sure. LOL Thanks for adding the article. Makes sense to me. TONI---Boy, you really are out in the country! Driving over an hour is really a time commitment for you. I'll bet you are really organized and make every advantage of those long trips to the big store. I loved your description of your tiny store in town. Sounds like something from another generation. Around here, most of the small places have been overtaken by the huge mega grocery chains. You are funny. Yes, I guess everybody is watching Dr. Phil. I hope they are, because I want him to stay on the air. I should tape him, but I don't like to commit all those evening hours to catching up on the day's shows. DH and I have been trying to only turn on the tv when it's a show we want to watch. Like tonight, we are just working at our desks and listening to music. It's much more peaceful that way. But I could be a real tv addict without much help. I like the daytime tv more than the evening stuff. I love all those decorating shows and some of the craft stuff on HGTV. Do you have that station or the Discovery Channel. Christopher Lowell is my favorite. I've been watching him for years. I'm glad you like my jewelry. I can't imagine anybody wanting to buy it. I'll just keep making stuff and either wearing it or giving it away. I told my boss I could loan her and some of the other girls pieces to wear with their friends for advertising. Kind of like breathing billboards! LOL JACK-K----I thought the thin people were probably freezing their teeny booties off. Thanks for that confirmation. One reason my thermostat is all screwed up is because my thyroid is almost all gone. I didnt' know how much that gland did until mine left. Anyways, I would rather be thin and cold than this size and sweaty. Ha!!! DH says he only went to Churchill Downs once (I thought it was more than that.) and they finished their work with them. So that won't work for a meeting. But L'ville isn't that far. We could always plan something. Perhaps after your big wedding when life slows down to normal. Will it every slow down to normal for you? Do you all go to Kentucky Kingdom? My DH is a huge rollercoaster fan. He'd love to get down there to ride them. MAEMAE---Congrats!!!!!!! Awesome job!!!!!!! Way to go!!!!!!!! I'm so happy that you took a leap and it paid off for you. How exciting! Be sure and fill us in on all the details. FILLISE---I guess we all have our little areas of disorganization. I'm blessed with more than others. Ha! We just seem to get one rooom straightened up and that messes up another. It's a vicious cycle. However, DH and I are both in a monstrous purging mood. So that is helping right now. We must strike while the iron is HOT! This mood may not last long. How is Miss Belle? You haven't mentioned her lately. MUSIC----Okay, it's a deal. You and me will wake up TOTALLY GUILT FREE on Monday. Because we will rule our weekend and not the other way around. Does that sound like a plan??? Thanks for taking a peak at the handiwork. You're sweet. TRISH----Here's the SF icing on the cake with PF Changs. I called them today to see if they would like to donate a gift certificate to our upcoming fundraiser event in March. The manager said that donations like that went against their corporate policies. I said, "So you don't give back to the community?" She said, "No." I wanted to say, "Oh and you're okay with that?" What I did say was, "Well, what do you suggest?" I'll dump the responsibility right back into her lap. She finally caved and said that if we came in with a letter, we could possibly get a manager to give a small gift certificate. YUCK!!! That did it for me. I will NEVER go back there. I can't stand places that don't give back to the community. Don't get me wrong . . . there are plenty of places who don't give to us, but they do give to some sort of charity. And that's great! But to just make a blanket statement saying we don't do that. No way. Hey, was DS hurt in the window incident? I sure hope not. He sounds like a sweetie being all upset that he upset the other mom. What a cutie. Those things happen especially when you are young and you have all this excess energy and your arms and legs are always flying every which way. GATOR----Thanks again for the suggestions for my typing weirdnesses. That really got me to thinking. We Mac girls must stick together. I think it's great that your daughter has committed to walking with you. How great for you both. And you will get some really good quality time together while you're out there pounding the pavement. Cool! I'm glad you have outside walking weather. It's a tadbit on the FREEZING side here to even think of that. There are some real diehards who are still out there every day. But I am nowhere near that level of commitment. Do you walk outside all summer long, when it gets unbearable down there? Is that a problem for you? Okay, that's it for me. I'm going to quick get in my jammies before trying to get on the chat. Hopefully we'll have a good turnout tonight. Catch you later. Kim |

HiedieHo All!
Have a few minutes before going to NH. Was awake most of night as GD was sick. At first she was so bad, she couldn't breathe and we called ambulance. By time it arrived she had thrown up a great deal more, that apparently relieved the pressure enough she could breathe again. After being checked out by EMTs, she didn't want to go to hospital. DIL of course was up all night with her as she con't to throw up, so she did not go to work. I took some stuff to the office for her this a.m. Right now she has GD to Doctor. They said bring her in ASAP. I'm pooped too as the bathroom is next to my room, I also would check from time to time. FILLISE: Hope your achy feelings were from the end of a long day and that you are not coming down with something. 3REDS: Welcome Have to go will check in later. Okay! I started this on early Monday morning, this weeks board wasn't even up yet. Last night I finished it and you guessed it! There was a flicker and I lost it. Started things up again and found this part but not the new part. I was pooped so gave it up. So try, try again! Doctor gave GD a shot that was supposed to stop the vomiting. Said he felt she had food poisoning from a dairy product. She and DIL compared notes and GD had cream cheeses that no one else had. She had opened a fresh package and it was dated okay. At any rate, shot did not work, so doctor ordered Phenegren suppositories, if they didn't work it would have been off to the ER. After a couple of applications they did finally work. I can tell she she is one weak kitten today. QUILT: Will check out your pics. DEB: We don't amaze ourselves. We do want has to be done as best we can. Although I often feel the best is not good enough anymore. I get so annoyed that I can't do this or that anymore. Im' posting this now so I don't lose it Shirley |
HiedieHo All!
3REDS: Don't beieve I said welcome. MAE: Sorry about your friend, How did intyerbview go? Just read further along, HOORAY for you! What a cute pic you and kids are adorable! To all who questioned and answered. Loved learning about the elephant! I'm so far behind and achy I am not responding as I should but did read. I will tell you this....... A KEEPER : Some things you keep. Like good teeth. Warm coats. Bald _husbands. They're good for you, reliable and _practical and so sublime that to throw them away would make the _garbage man a thief. So you hang on, because something _old is sometimes better than something new, and what you know is often better than a stranger. These are my _thoughts, they make me sound old, old and tame, and dull at a time when everybody else is risky and racy and __flashing all that's new and improved in their lives. New careers, new thighs, new lips, new cars. The world is dizzy with _trade-ins. I could keep track, but I don't think I want to. I grew up with practical parents - a mother, God bless __her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then _reused it -and still does. A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. They weren't _poor, my parents, they were just satisfied. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived _barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers and tee shirt and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in _his hand, dishtowel in hers. It was a time for fixing things - a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven _door, the hem in a dress. Things you keep. It was a _way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that_re-fixing, reheating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant there'd always be more. But then my father died, and on that clear autumn night, in the chill of the hospital _room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any 'more.' Sometimes what you care about most _gets all used up and goes away, never to return. So, _while you have it, it's best to love it and care for it and fix _it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. That's __true for marriage and old cars and children with bad report cards and dogs with bad hips and aging parents. You keep them _because they're worth it, because you're worth it. Some things you keep. Like a best friend that moved away __or a classmate you grew up with, there's just some things that _make life important...people you know are special...and you KEEP them close! Isent this because you are all considered KEEPERS too! Author Unknown For those of you who know crocheting. No word from DD on her choice but there is a sale and I feel like crocheting so DIL picked out a design that says it's simple although the final work looks very intricate. It is listed under special techniques and says: A glorious array of border patterns, worked from charts in single crochet on right side, reverse single crochet on wrong side, create this antique afghan. Us colors you habve on hand, repeating the patterns you like. Photo is gorgeous. Have any of you done a reverse single crochet? I haven't but I will!! The sample has 19, count 'em.....19 colors. Because it is so different I am excited. We are going tomorrow to pick out colors. By the way my pattern books are so old they cost .35!!! This book has 56 desiogns to knit or crochet, "mcCall's Super Book of Afghans" Vol. 1. $2.95. I'm so old! Gotta go! In more ways than one! Will try to be better tomorrow. It's raining somewhere in the US or Canada, I can feel it! Take care, Shirley |
Fiddlesticks!!
I WAS doing so good today until this evening. I even done my 2 mile tape of WATP. I ate macaroni at dinner and I guess the carbs made me hungry about an hour and a half after supper and I ate an orange and a cup in a half of yogurt! UGH! I bet I will be up(#'s) again in the morning. Totally blew it. I need to get back on track and quit all this cheating I've been doing from time to time. Not getting me anywhere except up a couple of pounds. Okay, tomorrow is a new day and a new start for me.

WIW
I must say that WIW was good to me. I went away for the weekend and came back with a 9 lb increase on the scale! Shocking in a way but not a total surprise because I ate everything in sight and got TOM while there. Yesterday, I reported a 4 lb loss and today I can report another 4 lb loss!!! Only 1 lb to go to get back to where I started and since TOM is still here that is nothing. I was so thrilled. Curious the way it comes and goes so fast. I wish it didn't in a sense because I think it would keep me on the straight and narrow more, if you know what I mean.
FRUIT- Yes that was a minus 34...nasty, huh?! Congrats on running the gauntlet with the junk food...I know you can do it! SEF- Loved the story. It has some great lessons in it. QUILTER- Thanks for the suggestion on the book. I wrote it down and will look for it. There are so many websites and books out there it is hard to know where to start. My square is 12 inches with the border. It was meant to just teach us how to do a log cabin and to bind. It is a *dolls quilt* and I will just keep it like that as my *first*. MAEMAE- Congrats on the job!! Your kids are cuties. HEARTMOM- Why not try and set a goal of having 1 completely on plan day. When you accomplish that set your goal for 2, then 3, etc. Maybe if you put a goal into your head you will be more inspired. Do you have a friend to try and make mini-goals with? It might help both of you. I find that falling off the wagon really drains me of my resolve and that is harder for me to deal with than getting the gained pounds off. That is all I can see on this reply page so I gotta stop there! Happy WIW everyone, hope it is good for you. |
Good Morning Everyone!
Great Chat last night! DEB, JACKK, SERENE, you guys crack me up. I'm glad we all got on. RUTHXXX, if you are lurking, hop aboard. I emailed my MIL your address. Hopefully you'll hear something soon. FRUIT---Keep up the good work. I want your spirit to be contagious and I want to catch it! I'm so happy that you are feeling great. SEF---Sorry to hear about your GD being so sick. I remember being sick like that as a kid. The entire house would be in an uproar. Bless her heart. I hope her appetite comes back real soon. She's probably doing the soda crackers and ginger ale routine now. HEART---Don't despair. Use yesterday as a learning experience and go from there. I do believe there's a reason for everything. It's our job to find what it is we can learn from things like this. You'll be okay. Just remember we're all pulling for you to succeed. When you succeed, we all do to some extent. Okay, off to work. Snow has changed to rain. Temps are rising. PTL to that!!! I'm all for warmer weather. Catch you later! Kim |
Morning friends!
Just wanted to pop in and say that I'm back to where I was last week at this time. So, actually - no loss since last week (since I had put 5 on over the weekend somehow!) But, I took those 5 off this week and I'm ready for next WIW - BRING IT ON! Ok see y'all tonight! missy 286/254/170 |
Wow we're having a heat wave here in Missouri...Its 40 degrees and rained a little. I got to go up the hill last night and get my car after my DH got home from work.... Its thawed out here so I'm one happy lady. Today I'll get to go grocery shopping.. Thank goodness. Even though the pot of beans was good last night. I need salad and vegetables.....etc. etc.. Think this must be a really great day because I also lost 1 lb. Its so slow going its hard not to get discouraged but I'll gladley take that lb. I'm setting a goal for myself to get out of the 160's this coming month...
Trisloo- Oh my gosh I'm so glad no one was hurt by the window. Those little boys when they play together are something else.... Well I guess now with the agave you'll be making some goodies... Like Deb's cheesecake... Maemae- The pictures are great. You and your little girl are so sweet looking.. The Quilter- I know what you mean about t.v. Allot of the times I just keep it off and quiet at my house. My DH wants it running all the time. So I have a few shows I watch like Dr. Phil but not everyday. Wish I could get Steve to shut it down when nothing good is on. We had our satillite programing trimmed down to the basic's while Steve was off from work. But when we get back on our feet we'll get HGTV again because I really enjoyed it. What wonderful gifts your jewlery would make. That takes so much talent. Wish we had a place around here to teach you to do some different things.. I would love to take some classes. fruitloupe-We have lots of wonderful things to do here when the weather warms up. I live right on the Jack's Fork River and we also have another river called the Current so theres lots of canoeing, fishing and stuff like that. We have a paddle boat we go out sometimes in. Theres lots of horse back riding and camping. In fact theres a cross country trail rides here several times a year where people come from all over the United States and camp out for a week, doing trail rides and dances. Theres three resturants, three bars and lots of churchs. They have rodeo's and bluegrass festivals. But in the winter its very quiet around here. Sef- I hope your GD is doing better and has stopped thowing up. That sounds awful.... heartmom- You're right today is a new day and a new start. Just keep working on it.. Think where you'd be if you weren't trying so hard... Gracious- Great on losing that weight... You're just sailing along there. I'm still working on the 8 lbs I gained over the holidays. 2 more of those to go.. Well off I go for now and hope to pop in this evening.... 213/164.5/130 |
