Warning - do NOT mix alcohol with diet sodas! The alcohol and artificial sweeteners do not mix well. I did that once (a diet Shandy) and I have never been so sick! I learned later that you aren't supposed to mix the two.
i used to do it all the time and never had a problem. probably a personal thing.
I wish I had some good advice for you all but I don't. I really don't drink much. I used to go out with my friends all the time and never drank, I occasionally danced on a few table tops sober. Take your car and then you can be the dd.

No, I actually did read warnings about it afterwards. Apparantly it's a very common side effect of mixing alochol with some artificial sweeteners. Possibly it's something you can get accustomed to, if you drink enough diet soda? I can't stand the stuff, so I don't drink it - they just happened to be out of the regular kind that day. Moot point for me anyway, now, as I don't drink either alochol or soda anymore.
Diet coke and red wine??? BLECH!!!! That sounds just hideous...of course diet coke and anything is hideous to me...I hate the stuff...I drink it when I have to, but under duress.
Since I suffer from leg cramps and tonic water seems to be THE remedy...I've sort of gotten used to the taste of it. I tried both the regular and the diet and can't taste the difference at all.
But not all bars stock diet tonic, though it seems more places are lately, since the low cal/low carb craze has caught on in the real world.
I've been ordering diet tonic with a twist...it's cheap...looks like "something" and I can sip it safely.
I don't want to sound like an alcoholic, but, I do drink quite a few mixed drinks (at least once a month or so). My drink of choice is tequila shots or slammers (made w/diet mt dew), Also I do Jack & diet coke if you want something to sip on to last longer. We were experimenting one night and mixed crystal light lemonade (ice cold) w/ vodka, it wasn't too bad if you're drinking at home and have access to crystal light. I haven't noticed a weight gain or anything after I drink. Also, I was in Meijer the other day and saw flavored beer, never tried it but it sounds interesting, and it only had 3 carbs but I honestly can't remember the calorie content.
do you think its ok to go out once a week and have a beer or too? Or should I just give up on my social life at the risk of becoming super depressed and giving up on everything?
South Beach does not allow for beer. Red wine is OK in Phase II. There is no need to give up social life - just drink soda with a twist or a wine spritzer.
Any further replies to this?
I grew up in a religion where it was wrong to drink anything with alcohol. This was at a time when drinking and driving was not considered wrong by peer groups, and bush parties were very popular. If you didn't go and indulge, there was something seriously wrong with you. I also entertained professionally...many gigs were in bars and partying afterwards was with groups that did the bar scene. Consequently, adhering to no alcohol was a difficult thing to accomplish.
When put in that position, I learned very early to order a diet coke, or club soda (not everyone's favorite) with a lime, or something like that. I still socialize, but on my terms. The alcohol isn't the important part, the socialization is.
